Meet our Staff Deanna Rishell joins College Park Aviation Museum as our new Assistant Education Manager. Before joining our Education crew, Deanna was the Interpretive Programs Manager at First Heritage State Park in Dover, Delaware and the Volunteer Coordinator at the State of Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs. Deanna received a Bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Education from Arcadia University and is a certified Interpretive Guide by the National Association of Interpreters. Deanna brings over four years of museum education and interpretive program experience to our team and will be working to enhance our educational and family programming. In her free time Deanna enjoys kayaking, hiking and playing with her 2 sugar gliders, Juno and Jupiter.

Airport Operations Building After years of planning, the new College Park Airport Operations Building is open for business. The 12,000-SF building is comprised of two levels and an Innovation Hangar. The first floor includes dedicated space for airport management, a pilot waiting area, kitchenette, and meeting space for transient crews as well as exhibit/display space in the lobby. The second floor consists of a state-of-the-art meeting/ event space that can accommodate 20-200 people for meetings, trainings and receptions. The meeting space is utilized by the museum and the airport for programming and airport safety trainings and is available for public rental.

The second floor also has an outdoor mezzanine with a stunning view of the airfield and adjacent green roof. The Innovation Hangar is a multi-function space for education, programming, minor aircraft maintenance, exhibits and event rental. The museum’s Education staff is developing programming for middle and high school students that will utilize this space for hands-on and computer based learning opportunities.

Afternoon Aviators 1st Saturday of the month, 2 pm $5/person includes museum admission and supplies Join us the first Saturday of every month as we explore a different aviation themed topic through STEM-based, hands on activities. Fun for children ages 6 & up!
Peter Pan 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, 10:30 am Included with museum admission. Come to the Peter Pan story time for pre-school fun! Ideal for little learners up to five years old, enjoy a flight themed story and hands-on craft activity. To schedule a group larger than 10, please call the museum to make a private group reservation.
Discovery Cart Days Included with museum admission. Our Discovery Carts will feature a variety of themes that address historical, STEM, and art related aviation concepts lead by a museum educator. Each cart features handson materials from the education collection that will help explore these themes as staff engages visitors through interactive questions, experiments, and activities! ■

MLK Day: Monday, January 16, 11 am–2 pm How does weather affect flight? What is good weather to fly in? What do we use to measure weather at airports? Learn about how weather impacts flight at our traveling Weather Discovery Cart. ■
MAPPING AROUND
President’s Day: Monday, February 20, 11 am–2 pm Explore the various ways pilots navigate both on land and in the air. Learn how to use a map, compass, and even a sextant! ■
HIGH FLYING FASHION
Monday, March 27, 11 am–2 pm We see a lot of pilots wearing fancy outfits. Are they dressed that way just for fashion? Or are their outfits also functional? Learn about the changes in pilot clothing from the dawn of aviation to today
Brown Bag Lunch 2nd Wednesday of the Month at 12 noon, FREE Bring your lunch and join us for a different topic and discussion each month. Engineering 101 3rd Saturday of the month, 2–4 pm $5/person includes museum admission & supplies What is an engineer? Engineers are people who design and build things to solve specific problems. Learn the basics of engineering through an interactive, hands-on design challenge by creating your own design from drawing to prototype.
Exhibit Reception: Art of the Airport Tower Thursday, January 5, 5:30–7:30 pm FREE Art of the Airport Tower is composed of 50 photographs by Smithsonian photographer Carolyn Russo and explores the varied forms and functions of airport traffic control towers in the U.S. and around the world. Enjoy light refreshments while getting an after-hours look at the exhibit, and then try building your own airport tower.
Scout Day Sunday, January 15, 1–4 pm $5/participant Scouts of all ages are invited to spend an afternoon at the museum learning about aviation with activities that count towards badges. Pre-registration is required
Tower Talk Tuesday, January 24, 7 pm, FREE Have you ever wondered what actually happens in an airport tower? A panel of professionals will offer insight on air traffic control and the design, functions and technologies of airport towers.
Home-School Day Tuesday, March 28, 11 am–3 pm $5/participant Home-schooled students and their parents are invited to the museum for a day of aviation science. Students will participate in hands-on experiments and will have the opportunity to meet a pilot. Pre-Registration is required.

Art of the Airport Tower December 19, 2016–March 10, 2017 Art of the Airport Tower takes you on a photographic journey to airports in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific. Smithsonian photographer Carolyn Russo explores the varied forms and functions of air traffic control towers throughout aviation history and interprets them as monumental abstractions, symbols of cultural expression, and testimonies of technological change. These 50 images bring a heightened awareness to the simple beauty of the airport tower and a call for their preservation in the airport landscape.

On the Cover Rogers Dry Lake in California’s Mojave Desert served as the Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range in the 1930s. During World War II, the site became a training base. Later, new and top-secret aircraft were tested here. Edwards Air Force Base is home to many aviation “firsts” and countless records, and it served as a landing site for the Space Shuttle. The airport tower has two High Rise Escape Systems (HRES) for air traffic controllers in the event of an emergency.
