This year we hosted our first 5 to 7 evening. This event was specifically aimed at year five students and parents wanting to know more about life at secondary school and in particular life at Pendle Vale. We have introduced these evenings to help students and parents make the best possible decision about their future school. The evening was designed to recreate the experience of a new year seven student at Pendle Vale as we wanted parents and pupils to see our school from the perspective of a year seven child. Our current year seven students acted as guides showing families around which allowed them to be able to answer any questions.

Parents had an opportunity to listen to a speech by Mr Wilson and from a student, Amelia Bennett, about her experience as a year seven at Pendle Vale College. The evening was a huge success with many people attending. We look forward to seeing you at our Open Evening on the 7th October 6:00-8:00pm. If you have any questions about the transition of your child from year 6 to year 7 at Pendle Vale College please contact Mrs Pearson.

PENDLE VALE OUTDOOR SUMMER SCHOOL Bowley Scout Camp

What’s the recipe for a good summer? Well, start with a... goodly amount of new year 7 students, throw in a handful of year eights, find a great book to share, add heat from a well tended campfire and of course a healthy smattering of marshmallows and what have you got? THE OUTDOOR SUMMER SCHOOL AT PENDLE VALE COLLEGE.

Once again our new year seven students were invited to spend a week at Bowley Scout Camp over the summer holidays. Dens were designed and built, “wild animals” tracked, pizzas created and cooked on the campfire , bows loaded, arrows fired and chocolate bananas burnt, … I mean caramalised! In fact we were so busy fitting in all the activities that we barely even noticed we were reading too. As the final pages of the brilliant Michael Morpurgo novel

“A Butterfly Lion” were read, we all wondered where the time had gone. How would we while away the long, hot summer days left before we were back at school? Not to worry, I reassured the students, You’ve all got a pressie to take home - another great book by the same author and a promise to meet up in the new term, swap our books, have a hot chocolate and catch up with all the new friends made. FOOD CHAMPION (SFC) In July 2015 Pendle Vale became one of only 72 schools nationwide to appoint a School Food Champion (SFC) when, after a long application process, we appointed Mrs Bayley to the position. One of the aims of the SFC programme is to help students and their families understand that the choices they make in what they eat and drink, can affect not only their long-term health, but also their success in education. It has long been recognised that the quality of the food we eat is a vital part of growing, developing and maintaining healthy bodies. Being healthy helps us to concentrate and be fit enough to work to the best of our ability throughout the day. On a daily basis we see headlines about unhealthy children, the rise in type two diabetes and obesity amongst the young, making the

right choices about food is essential in combatting this trend.

bars to maintain energy and focus throughout.

Last year at Pendle Vale, the decision was made to ban sugary energy drinks. Research shows the negative effects that they can have on maintaining focus over a long period of time and also the disastrous consequences for dental health. We have now gone one stage further by making some substantial changes to our lunchtime offer. All students now receive a free drink and a free piece of fruit with all meals, this is to encourage a healthy diet. As part of our pre-examination routines students are also offered fruit, water and healthy breakfast

The School Food Champion is a national programme, with success being measured by the increased uptake of school meals particularly amongst free school meals students. Over the next year, Mrs Bayley will be collecting data on the number of students eating lunches at Pendle Vale. In lessons she will be investigating some new ideas for school meals with the most popular being trialled on the menu here at PVC. Mrs Bayley

We are excited to announce that Pendle Vale College will be working closely with Burnley Football Club over the coming twelve months to build on our already high levels of student engagement.

The successful Super Saturday events for year 11 will return this year with Turf Moor being our new venue. In addition to this year 9 students will be working from Turf Moor during their Raising Achievement Days. The focus of this event will be a Sports based business challenge. Finally, some selected students will have the opportunity to spend some of their week working from Burnley with Turf Moor’s education and community team to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

Intervention with the Learning Mentors This is Pendle Vale’s biggest year yet for intervention with the Learning Mentors. Students have the opportunity to access a mentor throughout their school career to help them achieve their target grades. During Key Stage 3, students are selected for English intervention by their teachers. Specific areas that each student needs to work on in order to improve their work are then passed on. Students work intensively in small groups for one hour a week with their Mentor to ensure that they tackle any issues they may be having and to improve on the weaknesses that their class teacher identified.

Year 11 intervention happens in a myriad of ways for both English and Maths. The Mentors work flat out with Year 10 and 11 making the best use of available time to ensure that each student has the best opportunity to achieve their target grade. The Learning Mentors at Pendle Vale College know that students who have mentoring sessions are more confident in their ability and get the opportunity to ask for help on specific topics in a smaller group setting.

“It helps you a lot if you’re struggling.” Some recent feedback we’ve had from our students:

“Intervention is entertaining and peaceful so you can learn a lot quicker and conc entrate.”

“Overall I think that English intervention is a great thing. I have learned a lot from intervention and it has helped me in tests.”

“I’ve found in tervention really helpful as it’s increased my understandin g in a specific b lock of time.”

This was followed by a walk in the glorious sunshine to the 7/7 memorial in Hyde Park.

Next stop was sightseeing in Trafalgar Square, walking by the Houses of Parliament, photographing Big Ben and on to the South Bank where we boarded a river cruise to see all the famous sights, such as St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower of London and London Bridge, and hear a historical talk about them. A fantastic opportunity for us to visit and sightsee all the traditional tourist spots that signify our British heritage from the comfort of our seats on the boat down the Thames.

The students learned about the tragic events of July 7 2005 when Next stop was something that most people never get to London was attacked by terrorist bombings. We stopped for some experience - a ‘once in a lifetime’ visit to 10 Downing Street. We quiet reflective time, remembering all the people who had been affected. It was a moment of deep sadness for us all as we began to even got to stand on the doorstep and knock on the door! realise the impact and significance of the memorial to the people of London and the UK.

Finally, we made our wa y to Covent Garden to watch the var ious street shows. It was a great atmosphere there, particularly watch ing the Mr Bean impersonator and the magician! We really en joyed this extra free time to explor e with our friends. We all arrived home at 12.30am absolutely exh austed but having had a super tim e. This trip will be runnin g again in July 2016 and alrea dy has a waiting list so if you are interested please ask Dr Riazat if you would like to have a letter. Dr Riazat

Westminster

The main part of the day was a tour around the Houses of Parliament. This is where famous Scientist and member of the House of Lords, Lord Robert Winston comes into the story. As Pendle Vale students were enjoying a tour around the Parliamentary chambers, Lord Winston appeared going about his daily duties. Our guide throughout the tour was more than happy to include himself in a group selfie and provided a very enjoyable tour. Parliament had the atmosphere of a ‘first day back at school’ as several new MPs were being given their induction to life at Westminster.

Our students then took part in a Parliamentary workshop focusing on the skills of debating and campaigning. Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson also dropped in to the workshop and took part in a question and answer session. I think it is fair to say that BBC’s Question Time is nothing compared to the grilling Mr Stephenson received. So, ‘what about Dick and Dom’ you might ask? After a boat trip along the Thames our students visited Covent Garden and it was here that the CBBC duo were spotted and gladly made themselves available for ‘selfies’. A memorable day for all!

Upcoming Computer Scientists

‘Tech IT On’!!

12 Computer Scientists attended the ‘Tech IT On’ event, accompanied by Mrs Majothi and Mr Hussain. The event was organised by Burnley College to raise aspirations and inspire young people in their use of computer technology. Our students experienced a showcase of technologies, including Sphero’s, 3D cinema, flying drones and a flight simulator amongst others. Using a Sphero involved controlling a spherical ball using a tablet device. The challenge was to guide it through a maze in the fastest possible time. Due to the Sphero controls being reversed this was not as easy as it initially appeared! Students experienced a free app called Aurasma. There were images placed on a desk and they used a tablet device to scan an image, causing it to appear in 3D animation on the tablet. This allowed the students to move around the tablet and view an extended version of the interactive image. Our students particularly enjoyed the games console area, which consisted of an Xbox Kinect, Wii and Playstation 4. The purpose of this area was for students to immerse themselves in the games culture and for them to realise the potential in pursuing a future career in games design. BATAK was another challenge, which was set up in the foyer and enabled students to test their reflexes by following a random sequence of 12 LED lights controlled by a minicomputer. They were hitting

buttons as fast as possible to turn them off whilst being governed by a timer. Some of the students also experienced flying a drone with an attached camera. They used a remote control to take off, direct and land the drone. This was harder than anticipated, as the correct amount of force was needed to initially lift the drone off the floor and to maintain the altitude without falling to the ground!

“I enjoyed playing with the drones, Spheros and the games consoles. The staff were very informative about the technology we used, and were also helpful.” Matthew Livesey

“I enjoyed the flight simulator and the games area. I flew a drone which was hard to fly at first using the controller but I got use to it.” Simnaan Chaudry The students were extremely excited and motivated by the event and were already looking forward to starting their Computer Science GCSE.

Our latest charity venture has involved Pendle Vale students working alongside “Go Velo” to refurbish three mountain bikes and send them to a deprived village in Africa. As part of the Pendle Vale year 7 Citizenship programme our students learnt about education from around the world. This included participating in the ‘Send My Friend To School’ campaign. In Autumn 2015 world leaders are gathering in New York to decide how to tackle global poverty over the next 15 years. The Send My Friend To School campaign this year asked young people to ‘step into the shoes of world leaders’ and tell their local MPs how they would deliver a better future for the world’s children.

at Pendle Vale, everyone is included and has the opportunity to succeed. We have a wide variety of inclusive sports available, with our students excelling at exciting sports such as BOCCIA, VOLLEYBALL, FOOTBALL, HORSE RIDING, BASKETBALL, ORIENTEERING, CRICKET, T-BALL, ATHLETICS, KURLING, SAILING AND BADMINTON.

Working closely with the Lancashire Schools Partnership we have also sent some students for horse riding lessons, learning how to ride and look after horses. Sports partnership also holds several competitions with the winners of the district competitions going to Blackpool to compete in the North West school games.

We have also developed a menu of visually Impaired specific sports. Our recent success stories include the Boccia team winning the North West championships and then going on to compete in the National Championships in Sheffield against the best teams from England and Scotland. One of the students also went on to join the England Boccia squad.

On Mondays after school, we also have campus club were students can play a range of sports and meet other students. We have links to Burnley Football Club with several of our students attending the football sessions after school. As well as the sessions for students to participate in we also train our students as young leaders, they then run their own sessions with primary students under our supervision. The inclusive sport sessions help students to develop their skills, work as a team, build in confidence, gain independence and help promote a positive attitude towards school. Our sessions run throughout the year and we are looking to add new and exciting sports for our students such as Footgolf.

Another great achievement was one of our students representing the Lancashire Lions Visually Impaired cricket first team, after attending the junior sessions he was called up to the first team and became the youngest player to play in the history of the competition.

Students voted for their Prom King, Rameel Amin and Prom Queen, Naeela Malik who took to the floor in the first dance. Some of our students chose to arrive by helicopter, a spectacular first for Pendle Vale College. The huge variety of cars hired for the evening also entertained everyone and certainly added even more glamour to the proceedings.
