sports Local talent bolsters University of B.C.’s women’s fastpitch squad
Three ‘Gades join T-Birds Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter
A trio of White Rock Renegades are set to join the University of B.C. Thunderbirds next softball season. Peninsula players Leigh Della Siega, Cassy Dypchey, along with South Delta’s Sydnee Gendron, have all agreed to play next year for UBC’s team, which is in its first year playing in the NAIA after spending a year at the club level. The team’s inaugural season came to an end last week in Texas, with a loss to Simon Fraser University at conference championships. All three girls played for Wayne King’s second-year midget White Rock Renegades team, although Gendron spent much of her fastpitch career playing with the Delta Heat. “I’m really excited. They’re trying to build the program up and I want to help with that, said Dypchey, who has played with the Renegades ever since
squirt division. “The girls on the team are really nice, and during our visit we took batting practice and I really liked the coaches, too. “I think I can learn a lot there. Dypchey, who played third base last year with White Rock, but has “played all over the place, wherever they need me, in recent years, Della Siega and Gendron will join a UBC team with plenty of Peninsula presence already. Former Renegades already on the team include Courtney O’Connor, Tayla Westgard, Jesslyn Hodge, Lisa Fadden and Kelsey Andison. The UBC softball program, created in 2008, was the brainchild of Rick O’Connor and John Barkley – whose daughters grew up in the White Rock Renegades organization. Canada Cup co-chairman Greg Timm was also involved in getting the team started.
