Evelyn Weimer (left) and Andrea Carr team up for a comedy sketch entitled Cowslip Corners, which takes place in Saskatchewan. venturing out to a bingo hall one evening and losing their way, only to find themselves in another kind of hall – a venue featuring muscular males wearing very little clothing. “We only have five minutes, so we have to be really funny,” said Sheffield-born Carr, who noted the double act started when they were both booked into the same spot for a showcase at Yuk Yuk’s. “They thought we were performing together, so I thought why not write a piece that works for the both of us? “We ended up doing a benefit

in Vancouver before 500 people.” An admirer of Weimer’s solo act, Carr says she has seen her comedy partner’s natural sense of timing “bring down the house with one line.” “It’s phenomenal she can get out and do this – she’s 70 and I’m in my 50s, and we’re both having a lot of fun,” she said. Both give great credit to comedy-coach Chris Molineux, who made tweaks and changes to their sketch and improved the timing. It was through a stand-up com see page 26

It’s not the usual plan for two mature ladies. White Rock’s Evelyn Weimer and Surrey’s Andrea Carr have teamed up with a slightly different purpose – at a time of life when many active women are more concerned with volunteering for organizations, participating in sports, following creative hobbies or enjoying spending time with grandchildren, they’re out winning belly laughs. These days, more often than not, you’ll find Weimer and Carr at the microphone, honing their act in rehearsals or doing standup gigs in comedy clubs like Vancouver’s Yuk Yuks or at the regular comedy night at Port Coquitlam’s Second Storey Theatre. While they started out doing solo spots, a sketch they developed recently won them a place earlier this month in one of Canada’s biggest comedy festivals, the 10th annual Funnyfest in Calgary. Cowslip Corners, as it’s called, was written by Carr, a former newspaper columnist and Governor General’s award winner, to fit their comedy personas, Prairieraised ‘Evelyn’ and “hoity-toity” English-accented ‘Frances.’ It’s a routine about two rather naive ladies in Saskatchewan
