October 1999

A Positive Sign

A Learning Community for the New Century

From the Headmaster One inevitable outcome of a self-study year is the desire to jump in and make changes.

A

s the cover to this Annual Report indicates, we see plenty of positive signs about our school - maybe not as literal as a billboard but evident within our campus life. The captions throughout this issue summarize these signs — goals and achievements for the year past and plans for the year ahead. It was a challenging year, with a strategic plan and an accreditation self-study to complete, a reorganization of our course structure to manage, and - happily - an enthusiastic, capable student body that constantly asked us to give them more challenges in all areas of campus life. One inevitable outcome of a self-study year is the desire to jump in and make changes. Many comments and many ideas are generated, and they all have merit. With limited time and resources, we want to concentrate on the issues that really matter. Faculty views are easily obtained. Teachers are the main participants in the self-studies. Also, the academic committee system here is designed to assure ongoing faculty review of their/our work. We wanted a more formal method of obtaining student and parent views. We turned to Pacific Consulting Group (PCG) to help us design a survey that would tell us two things: first, how these groups feel about key aspects of Priory education, and, second, where the school might make changes to increase their satisfaction. Surveys were mailed to parents last June. PCG specializes in interpreting survey data to provide this information. In other words, the report is more than a simple numerical tally. The survey also included a sampling of graduates

of the past five years. It is informational but, because of the small response, not necessarily representative of the entire alumni group. Also, their survey reflects their view of the campus as it was when they attended. Here’s what we learned: • Main Strengths: All three groups gave their highest ranking to “warm family atmosphere of the school environment, the professionalism and dedication of the teachers, and the strong preparation in academic subjects.” (The quote is from the report.) • Areas of Most Satisfaction: Academics, faculty and school community are students’ and parents’ highest areas of satisfaction. Students also included athletics in their highest rankings. • Different Priorities: Parents and students have different priorities for change. Parents want more attention to college counseling, and continued focus on faculty and school culture/discipline. Students want more opportunity for individual spiritual and personal development. They also want more attention to athletics, clubs and activities, and a more effective Associated Student Body. • Alumni: The alumni who responded were the most satisfied of the three groups. Their overall satisfaction translated to 6.3 on a scale of 7. Parents’ overall satisfaction was 5.89 and students’ was 5.33. This translates roughly to an A-, a B+ and a fairly high B. These are very good marks for a school, according to PCG. This survey is just one of many pieces of information generated for our strategic plan and our accreditation review with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Many other factors are considered when we propose changes. Nevertheless, some changes have already taken place. For example, our new schedule addresses preferences of both students and parents. Extended

Faculty: A Continuing Theme morning break time is now available for college counseling, meeting with teachers or group advisors, and holding all-campus meetings such as assemblies. The ASB has a stronger role to play in campus life this year, and time is provided for ASB officers to meet and talk with students about their plans. The school day now extends to 3:15 and three days a week that last hour is used for clubs, specialty classes such as music and publications, or study hall. Finances - the usual focus of an annual report are an essential underpinning of academic life. So is administration, the work of the boards of trustees and directors, and the volunteer support of the parent community. They make possible the academic life you will read about throughout this report. WPS, since its inception in 1957, has worked to provide an academic program that takes its character from St. Benedict’s Rule for monasteries and from the tradition of Benedictine education spanning fifteen centuries. It is this foundation which directs us in creating a balanced college prep curriculum and set of educational experiences. We are proud of our students, past and present, and hope we have communicated to them a love of God and a vision of life that is satisfying in its fulfillment. We hope you will enjoy reading this Annual Report and take pleasure in the many positive signs. Thank you for your part in making them possible. Warmly Tim Molak Headmaster

Board of Trustees “Putting faculty first” was the guiding theme for the Board of Trustees in the past year, and it will continue to command our attention as we strive to be a premier learning community. We made significant headway in three areas: • After three years of aggressively increasing faculty compensation, the salary levels of most of our teachers is in the top third of comparable schools which was our goal. However, there will be substantial compensation challenges ahead if Woodside Priory is to continue to attract and retain the teaching talent that we want. We want to thank the Priory parents, who also recognized the need and helped us support this goal. It remains a very high priority. • We upgraded existing campus housing and added one new living unit. We plan to restore another home in the coming year. The board is continuing to examine the faculty housing issue as a possible program to further support the “faculty first” initiative. • Planning and self-study efforts were continuous and extensive. They indicate our determination to give the Priory the educational program, campus, infrastructure (e.g., classrooms, technology, etc.) and financial strength it needs to be the premier learning community we envision. Ours is a hard-working board, and one cannot help but be impressed by the diligence and dedication that so many Priory trustees bring to their board service. I would like to take this opportunity to thank one and all. A special word of commendation must go to Bob Ward, last year’s Chair, for the able leadership he gave us. On the Campus Office of Admissions

Al Zappelli, Director of Admissions & Finacial Aid

Admissions’ goal is to create a diverse student body of interesting individuals, all with potential to succeed in our rigorous academic program and join in our unique community life. The students admitted for Fall 1999 are an exceptionally strong academic group. They bring experience in fields such as music and performing arts, technology and team athletics. They have varied interests, such as taking care of a horse, community service endeavors, service to their parish or church community, scouting, or outdoor pursuits. Twenty percent of the student body receives financial aid from a fund of $635,000. Students, faculty and staff come from about 28 nations. About eighty percent of the students are from the mid-Peninsula (twenty percent from Portola Valley). Five international students live with local families. Of the 41 boys in our residence halls, most are from California, five from the Bay Area. One boarder hails from Texas. The international students are about half from Pacific Rim and half from European nations, plus two boys from the Middle East. The international students this year continue a trend of increasingly high English proficiency and they bring a cultural diversity unusual among Bay Area independent schools. Woodside Priory enjoys full and stable enrollment drawn from an increasingly large and well-qualified applicant pool. Our challenge is to maintain the individual character and balanced community life that makes Woodside Priory a good place to be. Al Zappelli Director of Admissions & Financial Aid

Library and Technology Center

Peter Reinhardt, Librarian, and Susan Falaschi, Assistant Librarian and member of the English Department, with student Tony Schoch.

Parent volunteers under the leadership of Sharon Upjohn completed the conversion of our printed card catalog - more than 10,000 volumes — to on-line computer access. This project has an exciting history of more than a decade of computer crashes, defective back-ups and general misery which discouraged further interest until our brave parents had the courage to pick it up. The bouquets presented to Sharon at her “retirement luncheon” were well earned! This year, we look forward to entering collections from the Monastery Library and Jackling Rare Book Room on-line. Judy Noice is heading that project. Parent volunteers also will be helping retrieve catalog and price information about our donated and rare books. Over the past year, we have added several hundred new books for the Middle School Accelerated Reading Program, plus the books and videos that teachers requested. The librarians also selected several additional books as part of our ongoing collection development process. Susan Falaschi, Assistant Librarian, used a summer grant to create four large wall display areas and other special displays throughout the library. This space is available to the academic departments or clubs - not just the librarians. Peter Reinhardt Librarian

College Counseling Center Every student in the Class of 1999 was accepted to his or her first or second choice school. I am impressed with these students because choosing a school which is a good “match” involves a long process of selfreflection, talking with their teachers and families, researching into the various schools, and then taking into account financial and personal considerations. It’s not a quick or an easy process, but these students obviously did their work well and made choices that were most appropriate for themselves. Graduates of the Class of 1999 were accepted at more than 125 schools, including some of the country’s most highly selective institutions: UCLA, University of Chicago, Stanford, Berkeley, United States Naval Academy, Oberlin, University of Southern California, Sarah Lawrence, and Boston University, among others. Students continue to have access to tremendous resources for researching colleges. The College Counseling office now provides two computer-based college-search programs, ExPan and College View. This year we added College Search, an on-line service that provides access to 10,000 complete college catalogs. Other reference materials include up-to-date college catalogs, books on a variety of college-based topics, videos and CD-ROMS which enable students to “tour” campuses from their homes. While the formal college counseling process begins in the junior year, freshmen and sophomores often drop by just to chat casually about schools or about their own schedules. Students and parents are always welcome to make appointments and come in at any time, as a family or individually.

Betty Van Wagenen, Director of College Counseling

I had the opportunity to visit more than 30 college campuses over the summer, thanks to the summer grants program, and I visited six more in late September. This is very beneficial. When I step on the campus, see the physical setting and learn about their specific programs, one of the Priory students sometimes literally jumps into my mind and I know this is just what he or she has been looking for. The personal contacts are especially beneficial - now I can pick up the phone and ask for the right person by name when I want to intercede on a student’s behalf. Betty Van Wagenen Director of College Counseling.

Academics: The Heart of the School

Woodside Priory is maintaining its commitment to advanced technology integrated into the teaching of every subject area. Upgrades were evident everywhere last year and will continue. Here, Father Maurus shows student Allyn Coats some of the available science software.

Curriculum

Science

The English curriculum received special attention last year, with new Academic Dean Holly Thompson heading the department. Required experience in community service became a shared project between the Campus Minister and the Theology faculty. Study, reorganization and planning last year resulted in several new and revised courses this fall. New for this year is a jump from eight to 15 advanced placement courses, plus 13 new or revised courses. New APs include Art Portfolio, Computer Science, Economics, Environmental Science, and Spanish Literature. With an increase in student requests, AP French is offered again, and Chemistry and Physics AP are offered annually instead of semiannually. Other new or revised courses are in visual media, music theory, visual arts, drama, history, theology, writing/computer research, and PE. Following are a sampling of year-end summaries from across the campus - not a complete summary by any means but some interesting highlights.

Editor’s Note: This information is provided by Father Maurus Nemeth, who celebrates his 25th year as head of the Priory’s Science Department this year. He is especially proud of the range and quality of science course offerings at this time, he said.

Two years ago, math teacher Steve Marsheck pioneered use of the GeoSketchpad for his advanced math lectures, with the help of a summer grant. Last summer, with a second grant, he took Sketchpad a step further. Now, all his geometry students have copies of Sketchpad software installed on computers in the library’s technology center. With this software, they discover geometric properties on their own, using lesson plans written by Steve. Students exercise more of their learning senses and knowledge is more likely to stick. Steve notes that for the past three years his AP Calculus students have achieved an average score of over 4 on the AP exam, and everyone has passed. Also, the number of students taking the class is increasing, he says. (The student shown is Kiley Hepper).

6

With the addition of AP Environmental Science this year, WPS now offers the complete advanced placement science curriculum (biology, physics and chemistry are the others). Students may take these challenging courses as soon as they are academically prepared; some sophomores have enrolled and done very well. Students have a strong and well defined middle school and high school curriculum, including six elective choices - the advanced placement classes, astronomy and architecture. New equipment include a greenhouse and field lab by the community garden, an expanded lab for Middle School science, and a special gift for the electron microscope lab. That gift will fund the work of a retired electron microscope specialist who hopes to jumpstart this complex project.

Summer Grants

Foreign Languages

From a $50 request for whiteboard to a $26,000 request for Dreamwriter software, the summer 1999 grants touch students in this year’s classrooms. The granting committee approved 47 different project requests submitted by 28 teachers. The summer grants program encourages faculty initiative in professional development by allowing teachers to seek funding for projects they devise. The program is supported entirely by special gifts of almost $150,000. Most of the proposals for Summer 1999 allowed teachers to introduce new curriculum and obtain training to teach it, said Marianne Stoner, who heads the granting committee. In every subject area, grants supported teacher workshops and classes, curriculum development, new course development, and innovative teaching. The expanded Middle School Accelerated Reading program is an example. The program helped make possible the seven new Advanced Placement courses offered this year. It brought new software to many departments, a high-power, multi-media computer system to Fine Arts, advanced training and technology to the yearbook, web, and even funded a campus bird sanctuary for Middle School science. Preparatory work for two faculty-student study tours in South America received support. A revised and updated freshman orientation program was funded. The Residential Lite staff received new handbooks and the services of a specialist in international cultures. Teachers selected classes and workshops at Stanford and University of San Francisco locally; also in Tucson, Raleigh, North Carolina, Vermont, San Diego and Massachusetts.

Priory Spanish students up through High School Level 3 are among the first anywhere to study with En Espagnol, a textbook-and-video-based course that incorporates the most current communications theories and guidelines. Merrilyn Mecham, Department Head, likes the series because it has more content and structure than the previous materials, she says. Four years of high school language study is an advantage when applying to many colleges - just one reason why students are encouraged to pursue their studies. This year, AP Spanish Literature joined AP Spanish Language to provide both schedule flexibility and additional advanced work for students who complete their first AP in their junior year. Advanced French students are working through Independent Study arrangements. Japanese Distance Learning is again the solution for a student with a schedule conflict. Distance learning is a wellorganized, interactive program of study available over the internet. It includes homework, teacher contact and even online “classmates, says teacher Hiroko Takano.

Brian Ogden, whose hats on the campus include swimming coach, Residential Life staff and Social Studies faculty member, used summer grant funding to prepare curriculum and teaching support for AP Economics, new this fall.

Mitch Neuger made use of summer grant funding to revise Seventh Grade history curriculum, attend the Bay Area Writing Workshop for teachers, and continue studying for an advanced degree. 7

Father Pius, whose Latin instruction is still requested by students, was among the first adults to become proficient in the use of the computer when they first arrived on campus several years ago. He still can often be found at the keyboard communicating with friends all over the world.

Visual Arts

Priory English teacher Sue Koppett describes her methdology as “so traditional it’s radical.” Many Priory alumni remember it as the writing and grammar training that carried them through college. This year her freshman intensive writing/ research class, which she teaches with Susan Falaschi, is revised and expanded. Also new this year is 20-minute English drill and review software for students to use in the computer lab.

A few years ago, the Woodside Priory School Course Guide listed just one fine arts elective — Father Martin’s ever-popular photography (one of the very few courses of its type to be accredited by the University of California). Last year was the beginning of an explosion in new courses, with a new emphasis in ceramics and the addition of classes in sculpture and design. Students wanted to try them all, so this year the curriculum includes Art Foundations, which incorporates ceramics, sculpture and design. Also on the course list is metalsmithing, visual media, another ceramics class, Advanced Placement Studio Art Portfolio — and photography. An advanced multi-media computer station is in the works. Last spring, Department Head Cayewah Easley and the high school art students mounted Free Minds, their first gallery showing. Visual arts now blossom all over the campus. An additional faculty member and 1,600 square feet of additional studio space were needed to accommodate all this action. The current Fine Arts Building now houses additional potter’s wheels and work space. A new metalsmithing studio with specially designed workbenches was completed over the summer. A new art studio, a larger and newly equipped photography darkroom, and a projection room/classroom should all be ready by early November.

(Top) Construction began this summer on an addition to the Visual Arts Labs. It will help house the many new courses added in the last and current academic years. The building should be complete by early November. (Middle) Wendy Potloff uses advanced technology in her English, Foreign Language and Social Studies classes. This summer she received a summer grant to upgrade equipment for the yearbook staff. (Bottom) Father Egon, a founder of Woodside Priory School, is still a vital participant in Woodside Priory community life. He rarely misses alumni events or gatherings of Priory friends from the early years. He was even on hand for the opening-of-school parent barbecue this fall.

Parent Interest and Energy Parent Association

T

he WPS Parent Association approached the 1998-99 academic year with a vibrant enthusiasm to recruit, harness, systemize and direct the considerable talents of our diverse, multinational parent community. A marked increase in parent interest and energy made it possible to divide up tasks that formerly fell to just one volunteer - we got a lot done! It is a pleasure to report these accomplishments: • Support for the Arts, a new committee created last year, has now blossomed into four separate divisions— Theater, Choir, Orchestra and Visual Arts. Our hope is that parent volunteers can help enrich opportunities in these programs, which are all growing. • A fledgling Spirituality/Reflection Group for parents has been nurtured into a successful existence. Parents’ informal Make-a-Monk sessions revived an old craft tradition from a past era of parents. The ornaments decorated the foyer at Christmas and raised $700 for charity. This year, we have an official crafts leader on the PA Board. • The Christmas Tea and Ornament Exchange proved to be a popular new event for the whole President, Co-Chairs Liz and Alan Cirino Vice President, Co-Chairs Cindy and Wayne Davison Treasurer Pearlasia Past Pres. and Advisors Ramsay Waterman and Sharon Ladrech Back to School Coffee Laurie Gundell Family Picnic Sue Sullivan and Ramsay Waterman Founders Hall and Chapel Decorations Margaret Herzen, Linda Moore, Sharon Ladrech and Liz Cirino Parent Student Brunches Linda Andreini, Liz Fitzpatrick and Lili Walker Auction Co-Chairs Wayne and Cindy Davison

Priory community. This was a sharing of hospitality, friendship and holiday good wishes. The fire will be burning warmly and a good cup of tea ready to welcome again this holiday season. • For the first time, we have systematic financial records, job descriptions, and binders for each Board position. • We triumphed over a substantial list of activities in support of PA goals creating a warm and welcoming community, acting as liaison to other elements of the Priory community, supporting awareness of Benedictine values, and contributing to campus life, especially in the academic realm. Looking ahead, we have many new job titles for the coming year: Boarding Student Liaison, Photographers, Open House Liaison, Bulletin Board Designer and Foyer Table Decorator. We are proud of this synergy of shared goals and mission and are looking forward enthusiastically to our second year as PA Board Co-Chairs.

Signs of 1998-99 Students’ Giving Spirit Priory students raised over $1,300 for Kosovo refugees. They earned the 1999 “Golden Harvest” award for working to end hunger. They cleaned beaches, refurbished buildings, assisted the disabled and in a dozen ways applied the Benedictine value of community service.

Orchestra/Choir Award Music continues to thrive and grow. Priory now supports two orchestras and two choirs (Middle and High School, with options for more experienced players to advance), plus an advanced musicians’ recital and some small ensembles. Students were surprised and delighted to win not only a silver award but also the spirit trophy at the San Diego Heritage Music Festival, in which about 1,500 students participated last spring.

Help From More Friends Inspired by the theme, “Faculty First,” the number of Annual Fund donors increased in every category on these pages. Special gifts, scholarship and memorial contributions also grew. Thank you!

Many Merit Honors Julie and Mike were joined by five more Priory students who earned Commended and National Hispanic recognition (almost 19% of the class). Five graduates (almost 14 %) of the Class of 1998 received Advanced Placement Scholar awards last year. Janette Maldonado received a $16,000 pre-med scholarship.

Environment Rules! Environmental awareness was evident in posters, collection receptacles and many student activities. Middle School students created this fanciful poster for a fall dance, which raised funds to support Dr. Jane Goodall’s environmental work in Africa. Dr. Goodall was guest speaker at Woodside Priory’s Community Forum last spring.

10

Athletic Successes Varsity Girls and Boys Volleyball, and Varsity Girls Basketball made CCS (regional) playoffs. Two middle school basketball teams were league champs. Eighteen athletes won all-league recognition. Three made CCS; Steve Trudelle made state finals in track. Five new teams were launched last year.

Auction: What an Exit!

W

• Father Martin contributed not only his grandest father clock ever but also a hand-crafted, antiquestyle cradle. • The “fund-a-project” bidding competition netted support for a new weight room in the gym and other projects. • Information and auction items were all available to preview on the Priory’s web site. • Net proceeds were a record $170,000. Mark your calendars now for Auction 2000 - May 6 at the Hotel Sofitel. The art deco French theme, Passsage to Paris, promises a soiree magnifique in the ambiance of a grand ocean liner and 1930s Paris. Cindy and Wayne Davison, last year’s Cindy and Wayne Davison, 1998-99 and Co-Chairs, are throwing the party again. 1999-2000 Co-Chairs Auction

PS’s last big party of the century was an affair to remember - The 20th CENTURY LIMITED Auction and Ball set a standard for fun, glamour and financial success. Among the “firsts:” • A new setting, the Hotel Sofitel on the San Francisco Bay waterfront, gracefully accommodated the largest party ever, with about 330 guests. • A student-designed and constructed canoe, the Wee Lassie, impressed the crowd and brought in funds that were shared between WPS and a studentselected charity.

Benedictine Letter:

A Personal and Spiritual Reflection Editor’s Note. As we end the year and the millennium, it seems appropriate to end the annual report with a comment on Benedictine education.

N

ow that I am in my 25th year as a member of the Woodside Priory community, I notice that occasional urge to look back to the school as it was when I arrived from Saint Anselm Abbey in New Hampshire in the year 1975. When I arrived, I was used to teaching on the college level and working with college students. The world of college preparatory education was monumentally different. It took a full year to make the change from east to west, from college to high school, from Benedictine monastery in New Hampshire to new Benedictine monastery on the San Francisco Peninsula. Memories abound from those days. I remember my introduction to soccer as the primary sport here, and questioning how anything could ever replace football and the importance it had back on the East Coast. I remember the very first families I got to know - the Cains and the Oswalds - who have remained close and treasured friends over this past quarter century. My very first senior class that I served as counselor, the Class of ‘76, comes to mind. To this day I remember all eighteen of them, one of whom, Joe Montero, is now a popular and successful soccer coach and math teacher of the Priory. Another, Peter Chuppity, is the parent of Holly Kabak, one of our junior students. The transition year was not easy, but discovering the secret of the Priory - the sense of community and respect for all people - helped me. I discovered that here was a home where I might establish roots and contribute to an enterprise which was truly valuable in the deepest sense of the word. Many things have changed over these past years,

yet the most important aspect of the Priory has remained steady. That constant is the love and concern for the students we serve, and the desire we all share to challenge them to become truly “human” beings who have a love and respect for God, for each other , and for themselves. Each graduation we see seniors move on to new challenges. As they leave we realize that they will never really be replaced. New seniors will emerge to assume leadership roles, and they will have their own wonderful qualities - but they will be different. And we will remember each of them as they move on to college and beyond, for we have seen them grow in response to our challenge. We have grown because of them. In this way, the mutual journey continues, as does the Benedictine tradition. I am certain that Woodside Priory will continue to change and grow as the school moves into the new Millennium. Twenty-five years from now, teachers and students and some of the customs may not be the same, but the foundation will be there. It is good to be a part of this tradition that we all share in various ways. Alas, with some hesitation, I have to admit that football is still my number one sport - but at least it is 49ers football! Martin Mager, O.S.B. Superior of the Benedictine Community Director of Alumni Affairs And Member of the Visual Arts Faculty

The sign says it all. Dozens of friends joined Father Martin at the Hiller Museum of Aviation in late August to celebrate his 65th birthday. Even the “Pope” was there with some comical advice. Faculty member Mitch Neuger provided the sketch.

Don’t Forget Grandparents Day Monday, Oct. 18 9:00 a.m. on the Woodside Priory School campus Grandparents are invited to attend a morning chapel service honoring these special people, then, accompany their grandchild to classes, and end with a lunch in the dining hall. Grandparents will receive courtesy photos, plus some other surprises. Special arrangements can be made for parking and physical assistance. Please RSVP to Gail Kimball, 650-851-6193
