There have been reports of beams of light seen going into the ground before a crop circle forms. A Collective Consciousness Another idea I read about many years ago involves crop circles being some sort of result from the collective consciousness. I would like to think that could be the case, but with all of the bad things we do to each other around the world, I often wonder. With that said, there has been a connection made between crop circles and what those around them have on their minds. Back in the heyday of crop circles, many within the crop circle community noticed how the crop circles seemed to be gaining in their intricate complexity. Some voiced the opinion that now all they needed was 3D crop circles. Soon thereafter 3D crop circles started appearing. This would make any one wonder what the hell was going on. Are we responsible for the crop circle phenomena? Like the theory that the energy that creates a poltergeist is caused by a human agent, could crop circles be formed using the same theory? Is there some sort of collective consciousness that we all share that is somehow acting upon the surface of our planet, trying to send us a message somehow? If so, then we’ve obviously seen it, but have we understood it, and what does it all mean? Or, maybe another answer is that whoever is creating them has somehow tapped into the consciousness of the people of this planet. Maybe a group such as the fabled Ascended Masters or some other esoteric group. In Conclusion Paranormal enthusiasts should take a closer look at crop circles that exhibit unexplainable paranormal attributes. Also read over Katie’s article and other material on the subject to find out all you can about crop circles and what may cause them. And, just like Katie says, make your own decision on what you think crop circles really are. Actually, this month I decided to do a serious (gasp) paranormal top 10 list as I share with you the most influential books I’ve read that have encouraged and developed my work as an afterlife researcher. 10. “On Life After Death” by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross This is a collection of essays by near-death researcher the late Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. It was released in 1991 and has an inspiring message for anyone facing death (which is pretty much all of us). The Swiss-born psychiatrist also wrote Why Are We Here, The Tunnel and the Light, and Life Lessons. 9. “Paranormal: My Life in Pursuit of the Afterlife” by Raymond Moody Dr. Raymond Moody has written a great autobiography here in which he shares his journey from studying neardeath experiences to experiments with reincarnation and scrying. This particular book was published in 2012. You’ll see Dr. Moody later on in this list, as his complete works include more than 11 best-selling books. 8. “Lessons of Many Lives” by Melissa Watts This really isn’t a plug for a book I cowrote. The book is hypnotherapist Melissa Watts’ autobiography (2009) in which she shares how her journey into life between lives hypnotherapy provided valuable insights into our ultimate purpose in life. As Melissa’s coauthor on the book, it had a profound influence on me and affirmed much of the information I’d been seeking since I was a teen. 7. “Spirit Faces: Truth About the Afterlife“ by Mark Macy Mark Macy is an ITC and afterlife researcher who discovered the remarkable ability to photograph the faces of spirits using a Polaroid camera and something he calls the illuminator. This fascinating book was published in 2006 and based on 15 years of research. The images are extremely intriguing. 6. “Someone Else’s Yesterday” by Jeffrey Keene Some call Keene’s case, as documented in this 2003 book, the most evidentially documented case of reincarnation, and it’s a compelling one. Keene is a gentle warrior who relates the lessons he learned as he experienced spontaneous recall of life as Civil War General John B. Gordon. 5. “Spook: Science Takes on the Afterlife” by Mary Roach Mary Roach is a great science writer. Her books are always funny and informative, and this one is no difference. In Spook (2006), Roach travels the world investigating cases suggestive of reincarnation, near-death experiences, ghosts, and others. 8 Paranormal Underground May 2013 4. “The Afterlife Experiments” by Dr. Gary Schwartz In this book (2003), University of Arizona’s Dr. Gary Schwartz relates his increasingly more controlled scientific experiments with psychic mediums in his ongoing attempt to scientifically document the afterlife. 3. “Many Lives, Many Masters” by Dr. Brian Weiss Psychotherapist Dr. Brian Weiss stumbled upon past life and life-between-lives regression during a traditional psychotherapy session. Along with Michael Newton, Weiss is one of the pioneers in life-between-lives hypnotherapy, which may just give us a glimpse of the afterlife. In this 1988 book, Weiss examines the “space between lives.” 2. “Destiny of Souls,” “Journey of Souls,” and “Memories of the Afterlife” by Michael Newton, Ph.D. Not one book but three, Michael Newton’s works are among the most influential in my own personal philosophy. Newton is a pioneer of life-between lives hypnotherapy. He has developed protocols for other hypnotherapists who wish to help their clients glimpse the afterlife. I personally have had LBL hypnotherapy, and it has changed who I am, allowing me to live with more compassion and love, as well as to pursue afterlife research in a whole new way. Newton presents case studies in these books. 1. “Life After Life” by Dr. Raymond Moody This book (1975) is #1 because it was the first, and you never forget your first. My dad gave me Life After Life when I was about 14. Moody’s look into near-death experiences opened my eyes to something I’d felt all along — that there’s more waiting for us than what we experience here on Earth. Thank you, Dr. Moody! May 2013 Paranormal Underground 9 Equipment Update THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS By Jack Kenna, Rensselaer Paranormal Research and S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England T hermal imagers are probably the most desired of tools by all serious paranormal investigators. And once again it was the paranormal TV shows that brought their popularity and potential usefulness to light, even though it was to the chagrin at the time of the companies that manufactured them. Let’s face it; the use of these devices for a fringe science like paranormal investigating was never a remote thought in the minds of the companies that developed them. And engineering firms did not consider their devices being used on national television for reality TV shows about ghost hunting “good publicity” at the time. Eventually, though, they somewhat came around to this new use for their equipment. And the fact that their sales also increased kind of help to change their outlook. Still, these devices are very expensive, and the truth is they always have been. They are also not very simple to understand and use correctly. Oh yes, they’re easy to turn on and film with, but understanding what you’re looking at, what the settings mean and do, and what settings to use under various environmental conditions is a whole other thing. Many investigators who are able to get their hands on one of these still have trouble grasping the fact that what they are looking at through these imagers is not video footage, like with their IR cameras, but what they are actually looking at is “radiation in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum.” Yeah that’s a mouthful alright. So it is IR? Yes and no. These imagers do view in the IR spectrum, but not the IR light spectrum. They view the IR radiation spectrum, which is completely different. OK, I know this might be getting a bit confusing, so let me back up a bit and give you a little history on who, how, and why these IR imagers were developed. 1962 Model KR-1 Evaporograph The History of Thermal Imagers In years that followed the sinking disaster of the Titanic in 1912, numerous devices were developed to detect icebergs. One of these devices was the IR iceberg detector patented by R.D. Parker in 1914. The next big development in IR technology came in 1929 when the Hungarian physicist Kálmán Tihanvi invented the IR night vision electronic television camera, named the Evaporograph, for the British anti-aircraft defense system. This device was so important to the British air defense that it was not declassified until 1956. The biggest advancement in thermal imaging technology didn’t take place until after the release of the technical details of the Evaporograph when Texas Instruments, 10 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Famous image of a possible spirit captured on a thermal imager by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of Ghost Hunters. (Image source: the Syfy Channel.) Hughes Aircraft, and Honeywell developed single element detectors, which greatly reduced the size of the imager and improved the image quality. Here again this technology was kept tightly guarded by the military, in this case the U.S. military, until it was finally declassified in 1992 and the technology patents were licensed by Honeywell to several manufacturers for production of these devices for industry and medical use. Of course many more advances were made along the way, bringing us to where we are today with the compact, light-weight, handheld devices that we see used on every reality paranormal TV show. Yes, we’ve come a very long way from the large, bulky Evaporograph to the FLIR handheld IR camera. What Does a Thermal Imager Do? OK, so much for the quick history lesson. Now what do these devices really “image,” and what real use/ advantage do they offer paranormal investigators? As I stated earlier in this article, what a thermal imager “sees” is infrared radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum. In very simple terms, it sees the heat radiated by objects, all objects — at least all objects that emit an “electromagnetic radiation” signature. By the way, Electromagnetic Field (EMF) is the spatial expansion of the electromagnetic wave, which is produced by electromagnetic radiation. This direct link between the radiation that the thermal imager sees and EMF is what makes this device a valuable tool for paranormal investigating — that is, if we in this field truly hold onto our theory that spirits, at least intelligent spirits, are made of electromagnetic energy. This would answer the question as to how the thermal imager is capable of capturing spirit energy, as well as the form it appears in. This would also then give credence to our seeming ability to communicate with intelligent spirits through various EMF devices and to detect their presence with them. OK, I hope I have just reasonably answered for you the two questions I stated earlier, but does this device’s potential significance to paranormal investigating mean that it’s a must-have for all serious paranormal investigators? No, it doesn’t. It is a great tool to have in your arsenal if you can afford it. but it’s not a necessity, not unless you’re an investigator that is deep into the scientific end of this field. If you do happen to have a few thousand dollars to spare and want to purchase a thermal imager for your investigations, then you will want to know what to look for when buying one. How to Select the Right Thermal Imager Unlike IR or full-spectrum cameras, picking out the right thermal imager is no simple task. Many of these imagers are designed for specific tasks, none of which is paranormal investigating. So how do you decide which is the right one to buy? Are any accessories needed? Who makes them? Where do you begin to look? First, if you’re serious about buying one of these devices, be careful if you search for one in the various online ghost shops. Most don’t carry them, and the few that do are typically selling used ones, which for the cost difference you may as well buy a new one direct from the manufacturer or one of their authorized distributors. This allows you to have the advantage of a warranty and their technical support team. There are several companies that produce thermal imagers/cameras, but the top company is FLIR (http:// www.flir.com). FLIR is also the primary manufacturer of all thermal imager components. What this means is that The FLIR T420 features highquality 307,200 pixel (640 x 480) resolution. He never could sit still. While alive, the show he knew of was Ghost Hunters, which aired on Syfy. He didn’t care so much for any program that depicted a half-fast way to show something that, in the end, would not yield proper data or educate with some sort of an intelligent factor about it. What were his thoughts and what are your thoughts concerning the current trend of excluding psychics from the field? Alexandra: My father hardly ever worked without one, let alone liked the fact that many were cast out as witches, charlatans, tricksters ... you name it. He tested them in his lair and always said there was a 50% accuracy rate, as no one can possibly know it all because we are not supposed to. His approach was that of balance and utilizing all the tools versus this way or that way. That is my approach today, as when I go on an investigation — no matter with whom — I carry with me that Holzer Method of balance, fairness, and open-mindedness. Trends bother me, because they stifle the whole picture of what’s going on around us in society. There is too much labeling and judgment cast upon this field rather than keeping an open mind and heart and rolling with it, you know? Q: Did your dad have these abilities? Q: Your father was one of the few investigators to look into the controversial, “Amityville Horror” house. Did he believe the Lutzes’ story of demons and malevolent Native American spirits running amok? Or was something else going on? Alexandra: Yes, he was. He was asked to investigate the home with his medium in-tow, Ethel Johnson-Meyers, and that’s what they did. Polaroid photos abound, a trance-medium session was conducted, and countless interviews took place with the beautiful boating town of Amity, from the mayor to the head librarian. He was never associated with The Lutzes’ claims or comments, as he was dealing with Ronald DeFeo, Jr. only. He visited him twice in prison, and was allowed in for an interview during a time when others were not. Father was respected and knew how to be with people and get information. Today, there are many claiming this and that about this case in the paranormal realm; it makes my head spin. It was very simple back then. But you know that old game of telephone where one person starts out saying something and by the time it gets to the last person, the whole message is garbled up and completely upside down? Yeah. That’s Amityville. Q: How did your father feel about you picking up where he left off? What were his thoughts about your memoir, Growing Up Haunted? Alexandra: My father and I were trying to get a show where I would host it and we would have him on like a Skype video cam as I went out on investigations. He was supposed to point out what I was doing wrong or guide me when I was doing it right. He wanted me to get a show and keep his work alive and well. We never did get that chance. When I became a published author he wasn’t surprised, and it was a very casual remark of, “Of course you are! I wouldn’t expect less of you. You’re my daughter!” he told me. He loved the book because it was an “My parents meeting was fated, as they both had a haunted lineage.” 18 Paranormal Underground May 2013 May 10, 1963. This photo was shot at the Holzer residence. The book became a memoir of both my parents and their unique and amazing parents hence — this rich history of war, death and loss, broken hearts, royalty, escape and politics, ghosts, and fame. Q: When you joined us on Paranormal Underground Radio, you spoke of a legacy in your family. Did it start with your father, or did it start long before then? Alexandra: The legacy in the field of research and modernizing what was there before him comes from my father. On my mother’s end comes the legacy of having her father be The Count of Russia with relations on the Baron side to Catherine the Great. She, her sister, and mother were all psychic. One evening in a real castle in Mirano, Italy, The Count held a seance. He, himself, had a fascination with the dead and spirit communication. My parents meeting was fated, as they both had a haunted lineage, curiosity, and cultural effect in the 50s on up. That makes me the second generation of whatever this mix is. Q: You yourself possess a considerable amount of psychic ability. When did first notice you had these abilities, and did your father teach you how to control them? Alexandra: Yes. I always “knew” things as a child, was sat upon by ghosts wherever I slept or traveled to at night, and had a hard time adjusting as a child in school as a result. Back then in the ’70s and ’80s, this was not a cool topic for discussion. The kids thought I was weird for liking the supernatural and ignored me mostly or teased me. I couldn’t fit in no matter how hard I tried. I felt like Wednesday Addams. My black hair would drape over my face like Cousin It. That is what it was like when being psychic back then. My father wasn’t the one to educate me; it was my Parisian grandmother, Rosine Claire Vidal, who married The Count. She knew and sat me down one day, explaining to me that it was OK if I “see” granddaddy and talk “You need to be that change and fight to be heard for your cause.” May 2013 Paranormal Underground 19 Investigator Spotlight goes in depth about the crime itself and the family back stories. It is a CSI Amity effect, and there is nothing else like it out there (in my knowledge) in film or TV. Over seven years of hardcore research and dealing with the police and family members, forensics, and a dive team, has landed him quite the story on this old and sad case. My part in this film was to be the only paranormal component and speaking on behalf of my father’s findings and where his thought process was then. I also chime in on my own theories, as I have studied this case well. My thoughts on this case are in Ryan’s’ trilogy, so you’ll have to see it to hear what I have to say! Q: You appeared on Travel Channel’s Paranormal Challenge. What were your impressions of the show? And how do you feel about paranormal reality TV? Alexandra: Yes. I was asked on twice, once for the Eastern State Penitentiary episode and then back to film at Moundsville Prison, also known as the former West Virginia Penitentiary. Well, it was a competition show, and I was asked to be a guest judge. It gave me an opportunity to travel to places I would not normally visit and feel the horrid environment of these prisons. I would joke, saying I think Zak Bagans is trying to send me to prison! But, in the end it was like anything else in life, an experience. As far as reality TV in the paranormal, I am cautious to say too much as to not offend the fans of many shows. I can appreciate the hard work that goes into making a show and people involved. The content is really where I have an issue with. It isn’t anything unique, new, or advancing. Some shows I actually thought weren’t half bad were cancelled years back. That’s how it goes. Longevity for a good, balanced show for this is a combination of many efforts, people, and opportunities. I myself, have filmed a couple of times and know how I would do this for a show. That’s really all that matters to me and those who support that effort. If you spend your time worrying about what others are displaying, you’ll waste your energy on what you cannot change. So you need to be that change and fight to be heard for your cause. Q: Your book Growing Up Haunted has been optioned by Hollywood producers. Are we going to be seeing your life portrayed on the silver screen? Alexandra: I hope so? Marilyn Vance and her son, Gregg Vance, are the ones who optioned my story. They are no strangers to the entertainment industry, as In her book, Growing Up Haunted: A Ghostly Memoir, Alexandra Holzer relates her haunted life with her father, Dr. Hans Holzer, and her mother, Countess Catherine Buxhoeveden. to him. She was a great woman who put her faith into a higher being then herself, which got her through the war, escaping Europe with four little children, one on the way and not very much English being spoke. I looked up to her as a source of power and a can-do spirit. Although she was my mother’s mother, and my parents were divorced, she was always visiting us from Long Island and would cook in the kitchen, chatting with my father in French, laughing and continuing on the family traditions. It was normal in our home for divorce, being gay, chasing ghosts ... you name it. And that includes being psychic. Q: You did a lot of work on Ryan Katzenbach’s documentary Shattered Hopes. In what capacity did you serve on the film? And what are your thoughts on Amityville? Alexandra: Yes. That has since evolved into a mutual respect in friendship, as he has nothing to do with the paranormal yet respected father and his findings in the case at that time. Today, Shattered Hopes, Ryan’s trilogy, 20 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Gregg and his brother grew up with the creator of the hit show Entourage, and their father is the legendary singer Kenny Vance. Marilyn is an award-winning costume designer known for such hits as Ferris Bueller, Pretty Woman, and on it goes. She is still working in films, and she’s also a producer and has created a few show concepts herself. Q: Do you have any other books planned or television projects in the works? Alexandra: I am trying to get my show green lit, yes ... like everyone else I suppose. I have been spending most of my time and energy on the show, aside from being a busy mom of four, running a house, writing, and school tasks. This show is my heart and soul. I can’t explain it fully other then it’s my path in life, my birth right, and a destiny that chose me, not the other way around. He orchestrated it all, and people revered him. You either loved him or hated him, but people were always in awe of him. Q: This may seem like a silly question, but what does your husband think of this legacy you carry? My wife thinks I’m a huge nerd. Alexandra: There are no silly questions, only silly answers. My husband and father got along great, as they both shared a passion and love for history. Every year father gave these big books to him on the Civil War or one on a specific president. As far as the ghost business, he took it in stride, but over the years has softened up a bit once his uncle came through and told me that my husband losing his cross necklace was terrible! He is still a skeptic when it comes to ghosts but respects what I do and has seen firsthand what I do. Nerds are okay in my book. It’s the normal folks you gotta look out for! Q: And finally, you mentioned your father assists you in your own research and investigations. How so? And is he pleased with your work? Alexandra: Yes, he does. First in life, he and I would do these back and forth debates on the orb theory, differences between what a ghost and spirit is, leaving your body and departing into your next life, and on it went. Some in the family told him to not contact them when he died because they would be spooked. Me? I told him to please contact me so that I can chat with him. Remember, it’s what I have always known as safe and normal. Dead people are nicer to me then the living. So, three days after he passed, I was placed in a dream with him where he showed me his new dancing shoes. In his final years, he was no longer able to walk, and dancing at the Manhattan clubs with real-live bands playing was his passion as well. That was message number 1, saying, hey kiddo, I am alright! From there, I was introduced to more dreams, hearing him, and recording him through various ghost box sessions. Today it is clear and evident that he is my main spirit guide and educator from beyond. It’s funny. The Ghost Hunter himself is back to help his daughter, well, hunt others to learn and help. “Today it is clear and evident that he is my main spirit guide.” Q: Speaking of books, I understand you are going to donate your father’s vast library and artifacts to a parapsychology museum. What is this museum, and what are the artifacts? Alexandra: We are in the process of working on something and don’t have too much in detail, as it’s right in the heart of the planning stages. When this prints, I hope to have more details as to the when and where’s. It does involve Lisette Coly, the great-granddaughter of famed medium and friend of father’s, Eileen Garrett. Lisette is the executive director of the Parapsychology Foundation, Inc. Q: How did your father deal with skeptics and cynics? Alexandra: With a loud and boisterous laugh, head tilt, and away-with-you attitude. Seriously, he spent little to no time on the James Randi’s of the world. He was so good like that, and how he handled these people was why he was able to do so much in his life. I know people forget or have no clue, but I am here to tell you, the countless TV appearances, radio interviews, documentaries, and world traveling this man To find out more about Alexandra Holzer, visit www. alexandraholzer.com. May 2013 Paranormal Underground 21 Special Report A The Colors of Life Auras By Jackie Chin, http://psychicconnextions.blogspot.com/ B efore I begin talking about the different colors that one can find in an aura, I will give a brief discussion on what auras are. Auras are energy in its purest form that appear around the body of a living entity and can be seen as individual colors. These colors can extend in a healthy subject at least seven feet in any direction. Each color has its own frequency and variations within that hue. The more pronounced the color is, the stronger its vibration — and one can say the healthier the organism. When a color is faded, it could indicate trouble spots within the living organism. Auras can easily be detected by those who are sensitive to energy work and children usually from birth to around age 5, before their mental intellect begins to form gaps in what is possible and what is not. Ever see a baby just stare at a person not looking really at the face, but just above or beyond? They are viewing the colors around the person who has entered their space. If they coo and caw with this person that means they are attracted to their energy and would feel safe and secure with that person. If, however, you notice that the baby is distressed more than a bit mildly, listen to that little one. There is something wrong. In this article, I have listed a number of different colors that one may see within an aura. Each displays its own characteristics, but in your personal experience you may understand the qualities differently. What is important to remember is not that you have different understandings, but that you are able to have the ability. And once developed you can use it to assist others in personal healings. One more thing about auras before I continue: These colors are meant only to be indicators of present emotion or physical state. They can change rapidly, and it’s important to not use them as a diagnosis tool on any level by themselves. White This aura color has many different meanings, so you should always look at the physical and character features of the person whose aura you are reading. The color is rare among healthy people, so you should carefully check the aura for any (even slight) tones of other colors to be completely sure that the aura is white. If your aura is white it means that your nature is very pure. If you see white sparkles in the aura, it means that your angels are near you. It can also mean that you are pregnant or soon you will become pregnant. Other meanings include you are using drugs or other damaging substances that seriously affect your health and you can be greatly influenced by distraction and should soon decide on where you stand on the spiritual level. Remember that your body is made of three very 22 Paranormal Underground May 2013 important constructs: Your mind, body, and spirit. Lack of attention to any part could result in stressors that could have been avoided. Rainbow If there are three or more rainbow colors in your aura, this can mean: You are a natural healer and your energy is pure and strong; therefore, you are capable of healing other people. That may also mean that you work as a healer. This is your first incarnation on Earth. You have not had any other lives before the one you are living now. Yellow This aura color indicates that you are a very joyous but stubborn person. You do not like to be told what to do, and freedom is the most important thing to you. You try not to become attached too much to anyone, and you are emanating joy, generosity, and energy. If yellow appears as a thought in your aura (above your head), it means that you just had a joyous thought. Gold The gold aura color means that you are enlightened and have divine protection. This color shows that you let you Higher Self work through you. You always act for the highest good of all. This color is a symbol of wisdom, spirituality, and intuition. If you notice a yellow halo above the head that means that you are a spiritual teacher. It also means that you have activated your third-eye chakra to the fullest degree. Yellow-Green This aura color means that you are a good communicator and understand how to manage finances. You are persistent in everything you do, enjoy your life, and are optimistic about the future. You are proactive and always look at the bright side of life. You are creative, and you can express your feelings perfectly into words. People who have such auras are also perceived to be powerful and sometimes intimidating. Orange Such aura shows that you have the ability to control people, and you are a powerful personality. You are capable of inspiring people, and you get easily excited. This color also indicates good health, energy, and a determined personality. You are very creative, and you are not afraid to try out something new and dangerous/exciting. You like to communicate with different kinds of people, and you may be overeating when you are stressed. You may also have some other addictions. Orange-Yellow This aura color means that you are a creative person who could work as an actor, painter, decorator, or entrepreneur. This color also signifies intelligence and perfectionism. You have a great attention to detail, and you like to see tangible evidence before making decisions or believing in statements presented to you. Red Red aura color means that the person is materialistic and does not believe in non-physical aspects of life. Such person sees other people as separate from him/her. To such person, looks are important. A person with a red aura may find themselves currently stressed over finances, family, or some other life issue. If they stay in this red May 2013 Paranormal Underground 23 Special Report zone, they may physically act out their aggressive state. When someone has a high level of red, they tend also to be overly dramatic, unforgiving, and nervous. Some of these characteristics can be easily brought back to balance if they can find an outlet. Pink If your aura color is pink, it means that you are a perfectly balanced person. You are very spiritual, but you also love Earth and live in the now. This color is not common, and it is usually only a temporary color; it cannot stay for a long time. Green Green aura color signifies relaxed attitude and ability to heal. People with green auras emanate peace, and it is very relaxing to be in the company of such people. People with dominant green auras usually love everything related to nature, and they love being outside most of the time. They feel a connection with nature, and they instinctively know how to grow plants. Violet This aura color is very powerful, and it shows that the person is spiritually advanced. This is the aura color of leaders and visionaries. People who have this color of the aura enjoy helping others prosper in all areas of life. Their passion is to help people find their life purpose and make them more aware of the spiritual side of them. Such people have big goals that some would consider impossible to achieve. They also have a very creative side of them; therefore, they are usually involved in work that requires creativity and imagination. Such people have strong intuition, and they are usually born with psychic abilities. Lavender People whose strongest color in the aura is lavender are the ones who have very vivid imagination. They also have some psychic abilities. They are usually less active and more immersed in thinking about their goals and imagining how they can accomplish their goals. Silver This aura color means that the person is abundant physically and spiritually. Such a person never worries about money, because it seems that he/she receives money at every turn. This color (when it is very shiny and large) can also mean that the person has made the full connections with the source that created everything in the universe. They are generally open to those who are spiritually minded and do not close their minds off to religions that have similar views. Connection to the divine is their main concern. Teaching others how to also bring up their levels of consciousness is extremely important to those who possess silver in their aura. Blue If your main aura color is blue, then it means you are very in touch with your emotions. You may emotionally react to any small expression directed toward you, and you tend to cry about small things. This color also indicates that you like to help others and are compassionate toward people. You like to be around people, and you are usually relaxed and sure of your ability to live a good life. You are very well aware of the Christ consciousness and to those spiritual guides who show divine mercy. You have great compassion for those you don’t even know, because you fully understand that we are all connected with that very same life force. If the blue you are showing at the time goes electric in color, you are very close to channeling an entity. This is something that is as easy as dressing in the morning. Because of this you need to learn how to protect your spiritual space and learn discernment — knowing when a spiritual entity is benevolent or malicious. Turquoise This aura color shows that you are a person who is very active and has a lot of energy. You have the power to influence masses, and you are good at multi-tasking. You like many dif- 24 Paranormal Underground May 2013 ferent things, and you have a short attention span. Therefore, things can quickly bore you and you cannot concentrate on one thing for a longer period of time. You would excel in management and leadership, because you are good at organizing and explaining complicated things in simple terms. Dark Aura Colors Meanings Mustard (Dark Yellow) This color can indicate that the person is suffering from pain (emotional or physical). It also indicates that the person is angry at someone and cannot forget about the incident that made him/her angry. This color is often seen in students who are struggling with their studies, financially, or in other ways. Brown This color indicates that the person is very strong in their personality; they believe that nothing comes to them without blood, sweat, and tears. They have more likely come from a very hard life growing up, and they have taken on heavy burdens. The good character feature of people with brown auras is that they keep confidences and are worthy of top clearances in matters of military or other highly secretive societies. Grey If your aura is grey, it means that you are a very simple person. You are usually very calm and wise. Those with a grey aura are generally counselors, spiritual leaders, and those who are brought in to calm explosive situations. Having grey in your aura will allow you to see things as they are and aid you in being in the NOW moment. Meditating can help to bring you to this level, and the more you gain control of your thoughts and actions the closer you become to being enlightened. Black Such aura color is very rare. Many people have been told that this is a negative color and that the person who holds a black aura can be a psychic vampire. This is utter nonsense. This person has learned how to control their aura and is very insightful. They have learned that not everything is as it seems, and they have also learned that simply because something is thought only to be healing it can also be used to harm. Most times they are not interested in taking, but giving of their time to those who are willing to learn the old ways. They possess little patience for people who are only interested in doing for the immediate and not the long term. They can be very endearing friends, but do not cross them for they have long memories. These people can go into situations of high stress and succeed no matter the consequence. They always do things for the greater good and may come off in social instances as being inept. But I assure you that they are watching everything and are fully capable of engaging when their interest is piqued. Simple Technique to Viewing Auras By developing a sight for auras you will be able to check both physical and mental health. You will also be able to understand your general attitude toward life and spot any negative character features (e.g., greed or hatred) you may have. Once you develop this different kind of sight, you will even be able to read auras of other people, like those of your friends or relatives. It will also help you understand people and determine their intentions. You will be able to see which person likes or loves you and which holds negative thoughts toward you. The moods and intentions of people can also be felt from the vibrations they emanate. I knew about the techniques of seeing auras, and a couple of months ago I decided to start practicing my aura sight. I developed a simple technique of seeing auras, and I was able to see the auras of non-living objects straight away. After a couple of days, I started seeing my own aura. Although some Websites and books offer complicated ways of seeing auras, it is not that hard to develop this ability. Here is my technique of seeing auras: Start with bright objects. Bright objects have stronger colors; therefore, their auras are much easier to see than the auras of subtly colored objects. It will be useful for you to first see the au- May 2013 Paranormal Underground 25 Special Report ras of such objects to get a general idea of how the aura looks like. To see the aura you should be in the area in daylight rather than one which is lit by an unnatural light. Take a red book or some other brightly colored object and hold it against the wall. The book can either touch the wall or not; it does not make any difference. Now look at the edge of the book and keep looking at it without putting any focus on it. Let your eyesight ease up, and just calmly look at the edge of the book and a background. Let your sight become blurry. If you can, start looking at no particular object. This way you will achieve blurry eyesight, and it will soon change to another type of sight, which will show you the aura. If you start seeing the objects nearer or further away from you than they really are, this is also a sign that very shortly you will start seeing the aura; just keep looking in the same way. The less you blink the better. The more tired you are, the more likely you are to see the aura. Also, first you will only see a very narrow strip of the aura, but with practice it will expand. You can make this narrow strip expand by transferring your look from the object you are viewing to that strip of the aura and the background. But remember, do not focus your sight on anything in particular because the aura will disappear from your sight. With practice you will also be able to turn your head to look at some different part of the aura without it disappearing. This will help you see current illnesses or potential diseases in the body. They will show up as dark patches in the aura. However, when you see different colored patches above or around the head, these patches can also mean that the person has very intense thoughts. The color of these patches determines the nature of the thoughts. When you can spot auric colors of the objects fairly quickly, then you can try seeing your own aura, animal aura, and other people’s auras. Although it is advised to start seeing a person’s aura by looking at their third-eye chakra (between the eyebrows), I found it much easier to see the aura by looking at a hand or a leg, because you can then look at the edge of your hand and you can also see the background. In other words, your sight goes in between the edge of your hand and the background. Therefore, the aura shows up easier. However, the aura is stronger (larger) around your head, so you can try both ways and see which one gives you better results. Tips for Seeing Auras When you try to look at other parts of the aura, you should do so by maintaining your blurry sight rather than a focused sight. If you focus your sight while looking at other aura parts, you will lose the sight of the aura. Also you will notice that your sight will try to tune the aura out, and it will take some time to quickly and continuously see auras because your sight is not used to it. If you see your aura as a thin, white strip, you may be seeing your Etheric body rather than the aura. To determine that you can put your fingers in front of each other, around 5cm apart. If you look at your fingers and you see that many white strips are touching each other from both hands’ fingers, then you are seeing your Etheric body. With continued practice you will be able to see the actual aura. The brighter the person’s aura, the more positive and stronger (physically and mentally) the person is. People with strong auras can focus clearly, and they are confident in the direction their life is moving toward. Do not be surprised if you spot an aura of the person that has two colors, which are going through each other and have different intensity areas. My aura happens to be pink/ purple. When you do see more than one color, it simply means that the person is working on a few different levels at the same time. The best way to see the correct color of your aura is in daylight against a white wall. I know that some people use black background, but I did not try this. If you look at your aura in the area lit by an unnatural light or against colored walls, you may see a changed aura color. This is because the aura color will be changed by the aura of the colored background or unnatural light. When you look at your own/other people’s auras, keep in mind that bright clothes can change aura color too. The less colored clothes you wear, the more realistic aura color you will be able to see. 26 Paranormal Underground May 2013 May 2013 Paranormal Underground 27 Case Files Of The Unknown: Haunted Sites Redemption: The Ohio State Reformatory By Shannon Lusk S itting on the top of a crest, stoic and proud, constructed of limestone and iron, the ramparts of the Ohio State Reformatory (OSR) stand with conviction. Originally built as a boy’s reformatory school and opened in 1896, the Reformatory housed over 155,000 inmates within its walls until it closed in December 1990. The hauntingly beautiful architecture and design was crafted by Cleveland architect Levi Scofield. Both alluring and mesmerizing, the Germanic-Romanesque style has given the building its nickname of “Dracula’s Castle.” Located in Mansfield, Ohio, the OSR houses the largest cell blocks found within the penal system. Standing six stories high, the East Cell block is the highest freestanding cell block in existence. At one time some of the cells within the building were only meant to house one prisoner at a time. However, over the years and with the influx of prisoners, they became over populated. These once “cozy” entrapments became stuffy and crowded due to doubling or tripling up on lodging. Such close quarters often caused quarrels and acts of violence resulting in injuries and even fatalities. A Tough Life at the Reformatory Life for the prisoners was anything but ideal. Just as animals in the wild had to learn to adapt and survive in their surroundings, so did the occupants of the OSR. Shanks, shivs, dice, and other contraband were found within the crevices of the prisoner’s cells. The inmates of the Reformatory were talented craftsman, making items such as tattoo guns out of a toothbrush, clock motor, ball point pen, bell wire, and duct tape. Because the luxuries of the outside world were denied to them, they invented ways to indulge in comforts one would find within their own kitchen. Created by attaching two spoons together with bell wire and cardboard as insulation, inmates could use this “water warming” device to make many delightful cups of coffee. Prisoners were not the only inhabitants of the OSR that had to learn to adapt to an unusual living situation. The Reformatory housed over 155,000 inmates within its walls until it closed in December 1990. Many of the wardens, assistant wardens, guards, and staff also lived on the premises while it was a working prison. The front part of the facility on both of the east and west sides were considered “home sweet home.” Living quarters, fit for a king, were fashioned for the warden and his family on the east side of the Administration quarters. With a flavor of Victorian style accenting the beautifully constructed wood work, these quarters housed many memories, especially for the children that grew up within its walls. 28 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Eventually, after the prison was deemed unsatisfacDoors slamming, visitors being pushed and scratched, tory, it closed, and the State of Ohio decided it was going and equipment failure are some of the many experiences to tear down the iconic dwelling that once housed notorighost hunters find when traipsing around the dark buildous criminals. It’s the second largest lake in the River Shannon System and serves as a recreational area for boating, hunting, and fishing. There’s a small commercial eel fishery that has local fame for its Eels on Wheels business. It’s also known as the home of the Lough Ree Monster, a lake cryptid that has been sighted for centuries. Three Priests Sight the Lough Ree Monster May 18, 1960: Father Richard Quigly, Father Matthew Burke, and Father Daniel Murray were fishing on the shores of the lake in County Meath, when one of the Fathers saw an unusual object about 100 yards away. The creature was six feet long from head to coil, and the head and neck were approximately 18 inches long. As it swam steadily, there was no apparent disturbance of the water. The part of the body above the water didn’t undulate. It swam toward the shore, then submerged gradually, disappeared and reappeared. When it was about 30 yards from the shore, it submerged again and didn’t reappear. The testimony of these three clergymen gave credibility to the existence of the cryptid. Local newspapers published the story. The BBC, internationally reported the sighting and published it in numerous languages. When skeptics tried to debunk the sighting, primarily by saying it was a case of misidentification, some of the locals also came forward with their sightings and encounters. Encounters With the Ree Cryptid Two men, who were walking by the shore of St. Mark’s Bay one evening, saw what looked like a calf swimming in the water. They rushed to try to rescue it. It submerged in an area charted to be 70 feet deep. Later, the placed was dragged. Nothing was found. Ireland’s Lough Ree (also known as Loch Ribh) is known for its boating, hunting, and fishing ... and lake monster. Retired postman Paddy Hanley said that 30 years before the priests’ encounter, he was fishing north of Yew Point at the mouth of Bally Bay when something strong grabbed his line. He was dragged around the lake until he was able to cut the line. Two similar experiences were reported by F.J. Walters and two English tourists. Two months before the priests’ sighting, local fishermen Patrick Ganley and Joseph Ouigly fought with a huge, unidentified critter that got into their pike net. They couldn’t see the creature’s size because it splashed columns of water about six feet high up into the air. The duo said that whatever they encountered was as strong as a horse. After it escaped, there was a nine-foot hole in their net. The amount of credible encounters with the Lough Ree Monster prompted a three-man team from the Global Underwater Search Team (GUST), including 30 Paranormal Underground May 2013 May 2013 Paranormal Underground 31 Case Files Of The Unknown: Cryptids & Mythological Creatures founder Jan Sundberg, to make a five-day expedition to Lough Ree in June 2001. Lough Ree Expedition Sundberg heard an anomalous sound when he used a hydrophone. He said the sound was very similar to those he heard while leading expeditions in Norway. Sundberg and others saw a small, dark tube-like object swimming away from an island that appeared to swim by some unseen manner beneath the water. So far, there have been sightings, sounds, and encounters with the cryptid, but there is no live captive or corpse; therefore, no hard scientific proof it exists. Other Irish Cryptids Another water monster was the Dobhar-Chu (AKA Irish Water Hound, Irish Crocodile, King Otter, Dhuragoo, and Dorraghower & Dobarcu) found in Lough Mark. There are two accounts in a 17th Century book about two men’s encounters with this beast. One was on the shore when one man saw the head of an unknown animal that was swimming in the water. The creature appeared to look at him and then swam underwater until it reached land. It grasped the man by his elbow and pulled him into the lake. The man was able to stab it, which scared the animal away. The creature was about the size of a greyhound; had slimy, black skin; and looked to be hairless. An older couple recollected a man who was walking with his dog and encountered the monster. There was a struggle with the pair against the lake monster until the creature finally went away. When the waters receded after a long period of time, they found the beast’s corpse in a cave. There is a furry Celtic Cryptid, the Irish Wildcat. Sightings of this beast have been reported, although the felines are considered to be extinct in the country. It’s possible that Scottish wildcats, the only true wild feline living in the UK, an endangered species the size of a domestic cat or cats with wildcat genes, may have found their way to the Emerald Isle. Some believe the sightings are cases of mistaken identity involving pine martens. There have been many sightings of the Irish Wildcat. Two were killed, but, unfortunately, the bodies weren’t analyzed. There is also the legend of Cait Sith, an Irish and Scottish Faery Cat. There’s a theory that it’s possible that legends of the Cat Sìth were inspired by Kellas cats that are the size of and resemble domestic black felines, the ones found in Scotland. Psychological Effects of Alien Abduction By Jill Stefko, Ph.D., Suite 101 Contributing Writer T he typical alien abductee reports being paralyzed by some unknown force, taken to a small room, and examined by big-eyed, gray-skinned, hairless, small creatures. Tissues and cells are sampled. Often times, subcutaneous implants are installed. Abductees are returned to their vehicles or beds and wake up with no conscious memories of the incident. They usually notice that time has, mysteriously, elapsed. It’s only after time passes or they undergo hypnosis that they recall what happened to them. Unfortunately, many experiencers suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Betty and Barney Hill: Alien Abduction Victims The first widely publicized U.S. abduction case was the Barney and Betty Hill Alien Abduction that occurred in September 1961. As they were driving down the road, the Hills noticed a strange light flying erratically. As they approached Indian Head, New Hampshire, the light appeared directly ahead of them. Barney left the engine running and exited the car to see the bizarre object. It was at this time that he reported seeing five to 11 figures moving behind the spacecraft’s windows. Barney got into the car and sped away. The couple then heard a loud beeping sound and suddenly felt drowsy. When they awoke, they were driving near Ashland two hours later. The Hills felt uneasy and confused about the time lapse that had occurred. Soon after the incident, Betty began having recurring nightmares in which eight to 11 beings stopped their car. They would be taken into a disk-shaped craft and examined. Unrelenting anxiety led the Hills to seek the help of Dr. Benjamin Simon, a psychiatrist who specialized in treating amnesia through time regression hypnotherapy. Treatment lasted for six months and revealed many details of the Hills’ encounter. The aspects in which both Hills described their ordeal matched closely. Alien Abduction Victims Share Similar Experiences Recalled Under Hypnosis Abduction details have been described by hundreds of people who were hypnotized by psychiatrists, psychologists, and other therapists. Victims are from all countries, ages, genders, and race. It’s suggested that for every abductee whose recollections have been released in therapy, there are many more who remain unaware of their encounters with aliens. Amnesia induced by aliens is extremely effective. Repressed memories can emerge in terrifying nightmares. Many victims recall being told that they will remember the abduction — as a dream. 34 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Alien Abduction Victims Suffer From Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Harvard Medical School’s Professor of Psychiatry John Mack, MD meticulously documented abductees’ PTSD symptoms of a Psychiatric Disorder Caused by a Traumatic Event. According to the DSM IV TR, the manual that mental health professionals use to make diagnoses for billing purposes, the criteria for adult PTSD are: 1) Repeated and intrusive recollections of the event, including images, thoughts, and/ or perceptions. 2) Recurrent nightmares of the event. 3) Acting or feeling as if the traumatic event was recurring, including feelings of reliving the experience, illusions, hallucinations, and flashbacks. 4) Severe psychological distress when exposed to internal or external reminders that symbolize or resemble a facet of the traumatic event. 5) Physiological reactions when exposed to internal or external reminders that symbolize or resemble a part of the traumatic event. Treatment for Alien Abduction Victims’ PTSD Helpful therapy for PTSD is releasing repressed memories through hypnosis. Dr. Mack used this technique almost a decade ago when patients began to seek treatment for strange, frightening nightmares of big-eyed monsters, involuntary physical examinations, and lost time. While under hypnosis, many patients recalled similar abduction events in detail. Dr. Mack’s patients weren’t feigning their memories, nor did they want to believe aliens existed. Most wanted relief from the nightmares and explanations about the bizarre images that terrified them or made them feel irrational. Regression therapy for abductees gave some relief. An increasing number of adults were referred to Dr. Mack by therapists who felt uncomfortable with the memories that were being recalled in therapy. It seemed obvious that a growing number of people had been abducted and examined by something. Robert Bigelow, Dr. Mack’s pioneering colleague, documented the alien abductee phenomenon. He wanted to know who the typical victims of the alien abductions were and why they were selected. Alien Abduction Victims: The Roper Organization’s Survey In 1992, Robert Bigelow and an anonymous financial partner established The Bigelow Holding Company. This might suggest that 33M people had been abducted in America. They contacted The Roper Organization, a consumer research/public relations organization. The Roper Organization asked people questions on it nationwide Limobus survey. Bigelow added his own questions in three separate Limobus surveys to determine the numbers and profiles of alien abductees in America. Bigelow knew that he couldn’t ask subjects if they had been abducted by aliens, because most abductions involve amnesia. The questions would be asked by an examiner in a personal interview. He doubted that anyone would admit s/he was an abductee for fear of being deemed insane. Bigelow knew that abductees, before their memories were released, remembered certain events, not shared by non-abductees, and were likely to admit them. He worked with abduction therapists to create a list of positive indicators. These questions were mixed with questions in three Limobus surveys. Alien Abduction Victims’ Survey Results The report was published and, confidentially, given to every member of the American Psychiatric Association and was sent to clinical psychologists and other therapists who dealt with PTSD. One out of every 50 people met an abductee’s profile. This might suggest that about 33,000,000 people had been abducted in America. The number of people reporting occurrences of items on the list greatly exceeded expectations. The report suggested that abductees were selected across gender and ethnic lines, with a larger number than expected falling into the preferred group — people with higher educations and social awareness. This could be coincidence, or it might reflect an effort to examine the genetic potentials of these human traits. If cases of 33,000,000 abductions are genuine, the frequency of these happening should have resulted in more conspicuous activity on the abductor’s part. If this activity is being done by an alien superior life form, their methods of covert action could escape detection. Research about UFOs, aliens, and abductions is ongoing. Hopefully, answers to many questions will be unearthed soon. This article was originally published at http://suite101. com/article/psychological-effects-of-alien-abduction-victims-a393581. May 2013 Paranormal Underground 35 Case Files Of The Unknown: Haunted History The Amazing Daniel Dunglas Home By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research I have never made it any great secret that I do believe in the existence of psychic abilities. During my time as a paranormal researcher, I have had the honor of working with some incredibly talented people that I am convinced had legitimate abilities. We also must acknowledge that these abilities have been studied and rigorously scrutinized by several governments of the world, major universities, and privately funded scientific organizations. After careful study, some of these entities came to the conclusion that these abilities, however rare, do exist, making these abilities far more scientific then waving a K-II Meter in the air and yelling at something that may or may not even be there. In this article, I will focus on a man who I find is nothing short of amazing. He is a man who has wowed the hell out of people and turned many skeptics into believers. His name is Daniel Dunglas Home (1833–1886), and he was a physical medium born in Currie, Scotland. The Gift of Second Sight Home, it would appear, was born to a life of dealing with the dead and other feats of awesomeness. Daniel’s mother, in their native Scotland, was known as a seer, as were two of Home’s uncles. The gift of second sight was regarded as a curse due to speaking with the dead and knowing before hand when gloom and doom would strike. Even as an infant, strange lights were seen hovering around Home’s crib, which would rock itself without the help of human hands. As Home grew up, his abilities became “scary” to those around him, so he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle. At 13 years old, Home and his aunt and uncle immigrated to America and settled in Connecticut. At 18, his aunt became convinced that her ginger-haired nephew was possessed by the devil. She subsequently kicked him out of the house, because the knockings and light shows that surrounded him were bugging the neighbors. Physical medium Daniel Dunglas Home (1833–1886) healed the sick and performed seances in the U.S. and Europe. Now homeless, Home traveled New England, healing the sick and performing seances. He never charged for his services; however, he did accept gifts and donations. The main thing that set him apart from other mediums of his day was how he held seances in well-lit rooms. One amazing display included having eight heavy-set men sit on a table, presumably to hold it down. In full view of numerous eyewitnesses, the table lifted off the ground. Could Home Really Levitate? Daniel could reportedly levitate himself and float around the room. William Makepeace Thackeray, an author and poet, was determined to expose Home as a fraud, but after witnessing the levitations and spirit manifestations he quickly changed his mind. Whether his levitation was a trick or real, Home converted many a skeptic to believer. So after taking America by storm, Home decided to wow Europe. And wow it he did. But although he report- 36 Paranormal Underground May 2013 edly performed some pretty amazing things that defied logic, he had some pretty powerful detractors. Homes Meets Skeptics in Europe After arriving in England, Home was heavily scrutinized by Sir William Crookes and Frank Podmore, two of Victorian England’s finest minds. And Robert Browning wrote the poem, “Mr. Sludge the Medium,” directly criticizing Home. However, it was obvious that Browning was jealous of Home, as Browning’s wife, Elizabeth Barret Browning, was said to have a crush on the medium. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Sherlock Holmes fame was convinced of Home’s talent. Home became very popular with royalty as well. He performed for Napoleon III and Queen Sophie of the Netherlands. Even the 4th Earl of Dunraven documented his many exploits. Home married twice, both women of Russian nobility. It was sad to all when the amazing Daniel Dunglas Home succumbed to tuberculosis and died in 1886 at the age of 53. I have always been a huge admirer of Daniel Dunglas Home. He was known as a gentleman, and despite his powerful detractors, I personally believe he was genuine. Home will go down in history as not just an oddity, but an oddity that changed the minds of many with his feats that defied logic, as well as the laws of physics. Daniel Dunglas Home levitates himself in front of witnesses in South Manchester, Connecticut, on August 8, 1852. This illustration was first published in 1887 in the book Les Mystères de la science (The Mysteries of Science). Why are they dangerous? I believe that the danger lies in a person’s intention and how they use the board. I have had clients who have actually become possessed or had demonic entities enter their home after using the board. Once, I had a young man who came to me about his experience with the Ouija board. He invited four of his friends to play the Ouija board with him. They ended up talking to a spirit named Zozo. It seems that Zozo is actually a demon that has been documented for hundreds of years. More recently, with the popularity of the Ouija board, encounters with Zozo have increased. According to this young man, three of his friends had died in a car accident after the Ouija board incident. In fact, he told me that Zozo predicted that the accident would happen on the exact date that it did. This story gets even stranger. As the young man was sitting next to me, I witnessed an upside down cross bleeding through his left forearm. I knew something was going on. Zozo is a bad spirit that you do not want to ever see or contact. This spirit will sometimes come through and then wait patiently for days, weeks, or months. Then, the demon manifests. Some people ask me if spirit boxes are safer to use than a Ouija board. In my opinion, spirit boxes are just like a Ouija board since they also are used to contact the dead. The intention is the same. However, a spirit box does not have a planchet or board. The box is a radio or white noise box that the dead are said to speak through. However, negative entities can also come through these devices. Let’s also take a look at ghost hunting, which in and of itself can be extremely dangerous. If the ghost hunter speaks to a ghost, do they truly know if that ghost is a human person? How do they know? Most people would say they can sense if the ghost feels safe at a location, or they might say no one has ever been attacked at the site being investigated. However, demons will trick you into thinking they are good and safe. Most ghost hunters are not educated on demons, and I feel they should have some training in this subject to more safely investigate the paranormal. I have had ghost hunters call me begging me to get rid of what they brought home with them. Demons will look, talk, and act like human spirits. They will manipulate you into inviting them into your life through communication with them. Ouija boards, spirit boxes, and just using recorders to talk to them is risky. So before you use these devices, remember to say a prayer for protection. If you suspect at any time that you may be communicating with a demon, walk away. Here are some steps to help you with spirit communication. • Say a prayer before and at the end of the session. • Ask the spirit to say God, Jesus, or some spiritual word. If it doesn’t, then use caution. • If you can see the spirit, is it missing limbs, eyes, fingers, legs, etc.? Demons will never look 100% like a human since we are in the image and likeness of God. • Remember, you are not in control. Some believe they are evil entities, while others believe they are simply a trick our own mind plays on us. In this article, I’m going to describe and define shadow people so you will have a better understanding of what they really are. Throughout my career, I have heard many explanations of what a shadow person is, from an optical illusion our eyes see to aliens taking this stealth form to observe and record the human life and routine. It still amazes me today how our human psyche can create complex explanations that might be more simple in nature. From the countless investigations that I have taken part in, I believe the explanation behind shadow people is quite simple. In my opinion, shadow people are the same as any other spirit or specter. The only difference is that shadow people cannot summon up enough energy to manifest into a full apparition. Whether this is due to being relatively “new” to the spirit world or the shadow person being a spirit that experienced a sudden untimely death, I am not sure. More times than not, I believe that when this happens, the spirit has not realized they have passed on into the afterlife. I also believe that shadow people can be demonic spirits as well. Demons have no certain shape unless they possess an individual. I believe this is the reason behind believing that all shadow people are evil. All of the personal experiences I have had with shadow people have proven to be quite harmless. I haven’t experienced any harm physically or mentally when dealing with this phenomena. My experiences include everything that is common with a haunting: the feeling of being watched, hearing footsteps and seeing objects moving. I have heard many explanations of what a shadow person is, from an optical illusion to aliens taking this stealth form to observe and record the human life and routine. The demonic signs, however, I haven’t experienced with shadow people. These more negative interactions can include being scratched, having objects thrown at you, and ultimately becoming possessed. Although this is only my personal opinions on this particular subject, I hope this will add some clarity to the topic. The subject of shadow people or any paranormal phenomena for that matter may never be scientifically proven in its entirety. The best thing we can do right now is make educated guesses based on our experiences and do our best to produce consistent and repetitive results in the field. 40 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Thursday & Saturday at 11 p.m. Eastern Paranormal and Conspiracy Radio With Demonologist Bishop Jerry Williams http://goingbeyondradio.com/jerrywilliamslive/ For information, May visit: 2013 Paranormal Underground 41 Inside the Psychic Mind Nighttime in the Realm of the Dead By William Becker, Paranormal Insights I had an interesting experience tonight. I hiked the roughly half mile out an old wagon road that was part of the Oregon Trail to a pioneer cemetery I have knowledge of. The cemetery had a very peaceful feel to it, even with the entities that were hanging out enjoying themselves. Not trapped souls, the spirits are gone, but something of the energy, joy, and peace remains — the social feel. The road in and out is another story. It was twilight — not quite dark — when I set out. I don’t like to be there too late in case people hide out there to do drugs, etc. It’s the living that scare me, not the dead! It was dark when I left the cemetery and started on my way back. An Encounter With Spirits Who Want to Be Heard On my way out, just before the halfway point on the road — it’s really more of a trail — someone tugged at my pant leg. I looked and there was nothing there that I could have gotten caught on. Then, just further down, I got heavy-duty chills and my skin started to crawl. I stopped a bit to see what was going on. Then I continued to walk as I talked to the entities there. It was a crowd of Native Americans. We communicated well, but it was clear that they didn’t want me to linger! Local historians claim that tens of thousands of Native Americans may have died from diseases that preceded the pioneers to the area. There was also some very intense tribal warfare in the area long before the settlers arrived, decimating the tribes. And, before and after the settlers came, there were murders and double dealing. All this activity happened in the location I was passing through. I did ask them what they wanted. They want their stories told. They want the truth about their lives and suffering made known. Some want a “cleansed” version of the truth that covers up much of the native on native violence and dishonesty, while others want the whole story told. The Dilemmas of Psychic Communication This experience brings up some of the dilemmas of psychic investigation and communication. In a situation like this, I have the living guardians of the area to consider, the integrity and preservation of the location, and the sometimes competing wishes of the entities as to what they want and how they want it presented. And, I need to do all of this without judging! Part of what we can do to honor the beings in these places is to work toward getting the truth out about them and what happened, and we must do so with compassion. That involves historians. I know what I was shown by the entities, and I know what the local historians say, but I haven’t seen the documentation — if any exists. So, what I can do is encourage the research and the inclusion of that research in the museums of the area. At this point, I can only talk about this part of the history as legend and information given to me as a psychic, and without filtering the history through current societal norms. 42 Paranormal Underground May 2013 When you ask a question or invite entities to talk to you, you’ve got to be ready to listen to what they have to say. It isn’t always easy. In this case, I was shown more detail of the conditions of the camps when so many were sick and dying. I was given insight into the theft and killing between tribes other than warfare — and within tribes as well. Some of the entities only wanted me to speak about the great loss of life from disease and not mention that which might be embarrassing to the people. They wanted to look good while others looked bad. Be ready to listen to the spirits and hear what they have to say. Connecting With Spirits Respectfully Cemeteries of all sorts have problems with vandalism, and people using the sites for a variety of rituals. When we visit these places, we need to remember that we are guests and do not have the right to interfere with the entities there in anyway. We can let them know that we are available if they want to communicate with us, and that’s really about it. We need to avoid trespassing (I have permission to visit this particular cemetery). And perhaps even more importantly, we need to make sure we don’t open the door for people that would abuse the places we visit. My basic rule of thumb is to not broadcast locations, especially locations that are particularly susceptible to vandalism and misuse because of their history or remoteness. And, we need to be honest in our presentation of what we learn from the beings we run across. We have an obligation to present the truth as they give it, and to differentiate between legend, psychic conversation, and documented historical fact. Fortunately, with a degree in history and being a ghost tour guide, I’m used to doing this! In consideration for all of the points I’ve mentioned in this article, I am deliberately vague in this piece about the location of the cemetery, because the cemetery itself has been fenced off, has razor wire, and looks like it’s got the fortification of a military encampment because problems caused by thrill seekers and vandalism. So, I can tell the general story here. And when I give my tours, I make sure I tell the hidden history that is important to those who lived it, and in some cases, continue to do so long after they’ve left this life. This is something we can all do wherever we live — tell the stories of those who went before us, and still protect and preserve the sites that need protecting. Haunted Hospitality The Country House — Clarendon Hills, Illinois By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research S o far we have taken a globetrotting tour of places of hospitality that have a reputation for being the abode of the breathing impaired. We have visited establishments in exotic places like Japan, South Africa, and Wisconsin. Don’t hate Cheeseland; it can be pretty exotic with its cows, beer, and various flavors of cheese! But this month, I thought it best to bring it home to the Chicagoland area, specifically the south side to one of the most haunted restaurants in the world: The Country House restaurant in Clarendon Hills, Illinois. In fact, it is a restaurant that has earned the dubious distinction of being seriously freaking haunted. Like most haunted places, the Country House started out as a dream. Emil Kobel, a German immigrant wanted his own little slice of heaven. And in 1922, he built the restaurant as a place for the locals to enjoy some great food, good drink, and awesome company. Kobel even went so far as to create a picnic area so patrons could enjoy the outdoors while taking part in the outstanding hospitality of the Country House. That’s When Things Got Weird In 1957, an aging Kobel decided it was time to retire and sold his dream to Chicago businessman Richard Montanelli. Understandably, Kobel’s patrons were skeptical of the change in ownership, but Montanelli proved that he intended on keeping Kobel’s dream alive. However, Montanelli would soon go the same route of his predecessor and sold the business to the Regnery brothers. The brothers immediately went about renovating the popular local hangout. And that’s when things got weird. The first known manifestation of spirit activity occurred when one of the Regnery boys was having a meeting with his contractors in the darkened bar area. Presumably, as they discussed the renovation project, The Country House restaurant, located in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, is home to all types of paranormal phenomena, including poltergeist activity and witnesses seeing fullbodied apparitions. six independently operated shutters flew open, flooding the bar with the light of day. Weird stuff happens when people are drinking, but the weirdness was about to get, well, weirder. Late one night a workman was working in the men’s bathroom when he heard the jukebox come to life. Thinking that he was the only person in the bar, the workman went to investigate. When he came around the corner, he discovered a beautiful, young blond woman standing in front of the jukebox. When he went to tell her the bar was closed, he saw something he was not expecting. The girl had no legs; she was just floating there. Who was the young girl that the workman saw? Upon doing some research, the Regnery brothers discovered who their strange guest might be. Sometime in the 1950s, a young, blond woman, who was having an affair with the married bartender, dropped in for a visit with her little girl. The bartender was not happy with the 44 Paranormal Underground May 2013 announced visit, and the two got into a violent yelling match in the bar. Upset by the fight, the woman grabbed her little girl and peeled out of the parking lot. Her car was later discovered wrapped around a tree a few miles away. The woman died upon impact, but the little girl survived. A typical story of a love affair gone horribly wrong and a death and subsequent haunting that resulted from a trauma. The Country House Today The Country House is still open and has become a popular place for those who are not just looking for a good meal, but a good ghost story. Patrons and staff alike have reported pounding on the walls. A phantom baby has been heard at all hours of the day crying. Pots and pans fly around the kitchen area. Footsteps have been heard in the second floor storage area. Scary stuff for such a quaint place to grab a bite. But there’s more. Male patrons have claimed to see the apparition of the young, blond woman sitting in a second floor window, beckoning them to come up. When the men report seeing the beautiful, young woman, they soon discover the girl is the spirit in residence at the Country House. Patrons and staff alike have reported pounding on the walls. A phantom baby has been heard at all hours of the day crying. And pots and pans fly around the kitchen area. If you’re looking for a place to get a good meal and hangout with the dead on the south side of Chicago, then the Country House is the place to be. The Country House is located at: 241 55th Street Clarendon Hills, IL 60514 May 2013 Paranormal Underground 45 Crystals & Herbology: Mystical Etchings From A Medicyn Woman’s Grimoire More About Crystals and Gemstones By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com I n past articles, I wrote about the basics of gemstones and crystals. Now let’s take a deeper look at the stones and how they work. I believe each stone carries a vibration within it that is transmitted at a particular frequency. That vibration emitting from the stone can vary depending on where it was mined and its chemical make-up. Each stone is different unless it happened to be mined in the same spot as another stone; but even then they will not match perfectly. When you are drawn to a stone/crystal, it is not always about the look; often it is about the feel. Have you ever been in someone’s space and felt a good or not so great feeling? Each human vibrates at a different frequency overall, and our chakras carry that frequency. Chakras are like vortexes, spinning at a set base rate for each person, generating your own personal vibration. Stones and Chakras You can see in the chart on the next page that each chakra is assigned a color. The anterior column shows where the energy vortex begins for each chakra. To help correct body function issues, you might try to attune the chakra associated with your issue. Say, for example, you had issues with eye strain and sinus problems. These are both linked to your sixth chakra (intuition), so you would want to choose a purple stone and lay it on your brow for a little while. This action creates a reciprocal effect between the stone’s and your sixth chakra’s vibrations in order to help reduce or fix the cause of your eye strain and sinus problems. This is not a perfect science, but I believe we are a lot like a musical scale from top to bottom, running from the crown chakra to the base. These chakra scales are linked to the Solfeggio frequencies. Solfeggio frequencies were discovered by Dr. Leonard Horowitz while researching his book, Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse. These tones are set in hertz sounds and aid in stimulating the body to begin the ascension process. Even though these frequencies have only recently been discovered, the planetary and cosmic forces around us have been working together for centuries, pushing us to this point in evolution with vibrations. The Six Solfeggio Frequencies include: UT – 396 Hz: Liberating Guilt and Fear RE – 417 Hz: Undoing Situations and Facilitating Change MI – 528 Hz: Transformation and Miracles (DNA Repair) FA – 639 Hz: Connecting/Relationships SOL – 741 Hz: Awakening Intuition LA – 852 Hz: Returning to Spiritual Order For example, the third note, frequency 528, relates to the note MI on the scale and derives from the phrase MI-ra gestorum in Latin, meaning “miracle.” Genetic biochemists use this exact frequency to repair broken DNA, the blueprint upon which life is based. 46 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Body and Energy Tuners There are two types of frequencies: body and energy tuners. The difference between the two frequencies is that the body tuner works with the physical body and energy tuner works with the etheric field. While holding a stone/ crystal that you’re attracted to, you will feel stimulation in some way. This stimulation is the stone attuning itself with the personal frequency you emit, helping you heal using your resonating vibration. This is the role that stones play; they allow our energy frequency to align and open chakras. When these chakras are open and in tune, they put us in touch with the cosmic consciousness. So why not carry one stone of each color at all times? Well, some people do. Others only want to focus on the chakras that are closed or too far open. This all depends on your style of healing. I personally let the stones call me. I lay them all out and wait to feel the response from the stones by quieting my mind and placing my hands over them. Not always do you know what you need on a conscious level, but you can trust that your soul and guides do. Many think if you just align your mind and heart chakras, that will help you the most. But it is not so much about opening the heart or the mind as it is balancing the frequency within the third chakra. Notice in the chart above that the chakra of transformation is the third one, called Manipura in Sanskrit. It deals with any issues within you that are about ambition and willpower. It creates personal action, but can be destabilized by shame, embarrassment, and self-consciousness. Physically, this chakra supports your liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen, and gallbladder. So it is important to work on this chakra with stones first or at the same time while attuning others. Overcoming the Confusion Stones can be confusing or misleading. Let’s say you want to work on your personal willpower. Naturally, you would think you should be drawn only to yellow stones like tiger’s eye or citrine. But you seem to be drawn to red jasper, deep orange carnelian, or even dark blue sodalite, and not any yellow stones. This is because the frequency is misaligned in one or some of your other chakras and needs to be balanced first before you can focus on your willpower. If you find that you are requiring these first, trust your own intuition. You may find your attraction to these other stones could open your channels, which could be all you really needed in the first place. By awakening your senses, opening your mind, and learning to trust your own intuition, you will find you have the key to unlocking the most important guide you will need to hone the uses of stones or crystals on a deep level. May 2013 Paranormal Underground 47 Magic & Lore: When The Mystical And Paranormal Blur Bringing Dark Workers Out of the Shadows By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com D ark workers are coming out of the shadows to assist kindred spirits of this planet to not feel ashamed, guilty, or feared by others. It is not dark magic, it is expressionism. Life is not about simplicity in situations or emotions for a dark worker, but a deep conviction of the self. Who Are the Light Workers? A light worker is part of the New Age movement that appeared in our culture around 1809. It has become very strong since the late 20th Century. As our human consciousness opens up, so does society’s rules, which has allowed room for the light workers to grow stronger in numbers. Today’s light workers are known for healing human spirits and guiding them while they spiritually awaken to their personal life path. The basics of their practice and personal beliefs are founded on the emotion of love. Love holds the complete key to following the white light path to your own consciousness, so they believe. The energy within a light worker spins from the inside of themselves outward, moving clockwise, called deosil, pushing energy and emotions out from the center of their core being. Their mission is to awaken every human to their light process, creating peace, harmony, and a non-egotistical world, leaving no room on this planet for the dark ways of acting, feeling, or thinking. To them the darkness is negative, evil, and self-centered. Many believe that the dark workings of humans cause damage or grave harm to others, almost like an infection spreading at will; but this can’t be farther from the truth. Life requires balance of the dark and light, good and bad, not to mention right and wrong. You can’t have one without the other. What Is a Dark Worker? A dark worker is the same as a light worker, with a few exceptions. They work to balance the light and dark, forces that can’t exist without each other. As demonstrated in the Tao symbol on the next page, there are two parts — the yin (female/dark) to the yang (masculine/light). Within the symbol there is a dot of the other half to create balance. This shows that without light there is no dark, and therefore balance cannot be achieved. Dark workers have been around as long as the light workers, but they have been hiding in the shadows. Since the title comes with such a heavy negative label, along with being judged to be inferior by the light workers and some religious people, it is understandable how challenging it 48 Paranormal Underground May 2013 may be to come out of the shadows. Dark workers come in many forms; they can be healers (even doctors), paranormalists, vampires (sanguine or psychic), shamans, priests, medicine people, warriors, indigos, therapists, teachers, and many others. Dark workers use all the same tools as a light worker: candles, incense, tarot, and reiki, among many other non-traditional methods. A dark worker is able to move energy, like your chi or life force, just as light workers can. Their goals are the same — to assist humans and influence them in positive spiritual growth — they are just working from opposite directions. Many dark workers have tried to fit into the light worker’s world, but the facts are they are different. Their polarizing energy spins from the outside in, moving counter clockwise, called widdershins, taking everything into their soul to sift out the imbalances. A dark worker’s philosophy is about self–mastery before helping others master themselves. Self-mastery is about knowing yourself and why you behave, think, and feel the way you do. Yes, it can be used in a negative way by any type of healer/worker. Dark workers need to understand every single one of their emotions and “skeletons” completely to be able to heal others. A dark worker’s mission is to help humans balance their ego and emotions, not remove them completely. By encouraging others to have self-love and to understand the inner child (that is in all of us), they assist those they are working with to move the emotional energy out of closets and into the open where they can examine them and truly let them go. Are Dark Workers Negative and Evil? There are people with negative intentions on both sides of the spectrum. Being spiritual is one layer of human life; to assume that because you’re spiritual you are automatically not negative or evil would be an unbalanced thought. All humans have faults and are subject to their own emotions and experiences that mold them into the human being they are. Dark workers are not all bad, evil, soul-sucking healers. It is a misconception stemming from fear of facing dark parts of the soul and ignorance about the purpose/role of dark workers in healing lost souls. The universal laws apply to all souls no matter if they relate to the light or dark. We all fall under the same code of ethics. Refined dark workers understand this code and the limits of these laws. Dark workers are willing to help others as long as those others are willing to help themselves. This is not a selfish act; it is based on not changing the destiny of another’s life path. The fact remains that we are all responsible for our own actions, feelings, and thoughts. How we use them determines who is negative and who is not. There are ethical dark and light workers that want to assist others to awaken to their emotions and personal spiritual beliefs. So, as the human consciousness continues to expand, so will the ways of healing. Dark workers are for those who cannot find comfort in the light and for souls that are determined to understand their emotions completely, including the ones they’d prefer to lock away in inaccessible recesses of the heart and mind. May 2013 Paranormal Underground 49 Katie’s Conspiracy Corner Crop Circles By Katie Christopher, NEPA Paranormal’s Ghost Detectives The purpose of this article is to educate readers on the facts behind some of the most popular and controversial paranormal conspiracy theories in existence. There are many things out there being hidden and covered up. But we have a right to know the truth. Each month I will cover a different conspiracy theory — some well known and some a bit more obscure, but all that have compelling evidence supporting the fact that the truth is being hidden by either our own government or a private source. You will be given the details behind each angle of the topic at hand, and in the end, it is for you to decide what you believe. Any questions, concerns, or suggestions are welcome and can be e-mailed to me at KatiesConspiracyCorner@yahoo.com. W hat is a crop circle? A crop circle is a large pattern imprinted in a field of crops, such as corn, wheat, or barley. These formations show an aerial view of a simple or sometimes intricate pattern. Perhaps, the most interesting characteristic of a crop circle is that the crops themselves are not snapped or broken. They are bent in such a way that they cause a visual imprint, but do not break. Some patterns have been known to be so detailed and precise that they take on other shapes and are known as crop formations. These formations are aptly named because they go outside of the circular pattern. These strange formations also have several key characteristics one should look for. The first is they are very sudden formations. They almost always form at night to be found mysteriously in the morning. Next would be the speed of formation. They are not done at a gradual pace. They are always complete between sunset and sunrise. Interestingly enough, they also seem to appear close to main roads and are not usually in secluded spots. This has been discovered based on the reports received over the years. 50 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Many reports were made by passersby and not the actual land owners, which means they are easily accessible for someone to notice. Finally, they are almost never caught on film, unless in the case of a hoax when their makers record the process themselves. Crop circles have been around for hundreds of years in their own way. In the 1600s old folklore states that a farmer made a deal with the devil to harvest his crops. Legend says the devil “cut them in round circles and placed every straw with that exactness that it would have taken up above an age for any man to perform what he did that one night.” Some believe this tale could be the first report of a crop circle, but research through the years has proven it is missing a key characteristic of a crop circle — the unbroken crops. From 1970 to the present day, more than 10,000 crop circles have been reported in over 26 countries. Strangely, 90% of these reports came out of England. Moreover, a vast majority of those reports were within under 10 miles from the ancient mysteries of Averbury and Stonehenge. Some attribute this to some type of paranormal connection; others feel it simply sets the mood and is the perfect creepy location for a hoax to take place. Theory 1: Man-Made There have been many hoaxes of crop circles through the years. Most who succeed are all too happy to admit their involvement in such cases. The first such case we will look at is a team of men named Doug Bower and Dave Chorley. In 1991, the two men came forward and claimed to be responsible for over 200 reports of crop circles from 1978-1991. They stated that they had perfected the task by using a plank of wood, rope, and a baseball cap fitted with a wire to keep it moving in a straight line. Precise movement of the wood at a specific pace and speed created a result of bent crops. With a little practice, they were able to form virtually any pattern they chose! In an effort to gain belief, they secretly made a circle in front of a group of journalists, but made no claim on the finished product. The circle was reported as any other would be, and a paranormal expert in crop circles, named Pat Delgado, was called in to examine the formation. After some research, Delgado declared it authentic. It was then that Bower and Chorley came forward with the backing of the journalists who were their witnesses and took credit for creating the circles. When asked From 1970 to the present day, more than 10,000 crop circles have been reported in over 26 countries. Ninety percent of these reports came out of England. Some say that tornadoes, ball lightning, and whirlwinds can create crop circles. what their motivation was for such a great hoax, the men simply said they considered themselves to be fabulous pranksters, and earlier accounts of crop circles were their inspiration. Their work would create a long list of copycat hoaxers to follow through the years. The next account of hoaxing we will look at is slightly different. We will look at crop circles as an art form. In the early 1990s, a group of artists created by Rod Dickinson and John Lundberg formed a group called the Circlemakers, which created crop circles and formations as a form of art. They also created them for businesses. In 1992, there was even a crop circle competition held in the UK with a prize of 3,000 pounds for the best formation. Many say that this type of art proves without a doubt that crop circles can in fact be manmade, so there is no further cause for research into any additional theories. Theory 2: Weather Through the 1970s and up to the 1990s, there were many meteorologists who believed strange weather patterns had something to do with crop circle formation. They said it was possible that tornadoes, ball lightning, or even whirlwinds could crate these formations. As crop circles became more complex in their patterns, meteorologists in turn became more complex in their theories, adding more factors and data that could cause these more intricate patterns. In 1991, when hoaxing became better explained, weather theories became less and less likely. May 2013 Paranormal Underground 51 Katie’s Conspiracy Corner into the crop circle theory. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I can recite almost the entire script of Signs without missing a beat. But after a lot of extensive reading, I was surprised to find that they are not near as difficult to construct as I thought they would be. Many hoaxes over the years have been proudly claimed by their creators. As a side note, another interesting if not slightly humorous theory I found on crop circle formation is that they were created by animals. To expand on that, the Tasmanian government issued an official statement that crop circles were found to be made by wallabies in fields of opium poppies. It was said the opium was being grown legally for medical use, and the wallabies would ingest the opium, causing them to run One interesting fact that piqued my interest is that some circles have blown-out in circles and stomp their feet, resulting nodes in the crops, and the bend is gradual, not kinked. M ost of the time you can easily dismiss strange sounds as animals moving around or dirt falling from the ceilings, but as I crawled further into the hidden area in the basement, I could see absolutely nothing. No squirrels or raccoons were using this as a home. Besides me, this cold dark space was completely void of life. “If you’re down here, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rick, and outside in the basement is my friend Sally.” It has always been my custom to introduce myself, because if there is a spirit in a place, it just might make them feel more comfortable and more willing to attempt to communicate. A Connection With the Spirits “Did you hide down here when you escaped from your plantation?” After I asked my question, I noticed two distinct things: 1. The temperature had dropped drastically. Radical temperature variations are believed to be the precursor to a spirit manifestation because the spirit uses all the available energy in a location; 2. More than once a stone hit me on the hand. This spirit was communicating the only way it knew how. By throwing stuff. I could barely contain my excitement. I mean, sure, I’ve been scratched, hit, and pushed before on investigations, but this was the first time a spirit had ever thrown anything at me. I took a chance and decided to ask a strange question. “Would it surprise you to know that the United States has its first black president?” Another stone hit my hand. Radical temperature variations are believed to be the precursor to a spirit manifestation. its presence known. “You really don’t have to fear any longer. You have your freedom. I would usually save evidence sharing until the end, but this is far to interesting to not share right away. As I was doing my EVP session in the basement hidey hole, a man could be heard breathing just under my voice. And when I asked if it would surprise them to know that we have our first black president, I received a response. A man’s voice said, “No.” Helping the Spirits Find Peace I really hope that learning this will help this spirit find peace and safety in the knowledge that he and his people have finally overcome. When the investigation was over and all the gear was wrapped up, our fearless leader Bob took me to the side and said, “You know Rick, I gotta hand it to you. You did much better than I thought you might.” I stood there pondering this statement for a moment. Why would he expect anything less? Then he continued, “I really like the way you investigate. You push and push until you get results. I definitely have an opening in the group right now and would be happy if you joined.” I couldn’t help but smile. I too liked the way this outfit worked. “Yes, of course. Of course I will. I really like you guys,” I said. “I could barely contain my excitement. After two weeks of crazy activity, it has calmed down once again. Besides seeing “shadow man” walking through the restaurant a number of times, we even had a guest make the following comment: “Hey, did you happen to see that black figure that walked through the lobby by the glass doors?” That of course ended up with the history of the hotel being told and the guest leaving feeling lucky to have seen something like that (his words). Even the lady in room 717 made an appearance. While she wasn’t seen, she was heard by a guest. A woman in her 40s called down and told my coworker that she could hear a woman’s whimpering coming from the other side of her room by the window. If you recall, we have had one guest that saw the spirit in room 717, hands to her face as she whimpered. The spirit was not willing to leave the room, so we changed the guest into another room. More Activity Includes Disembodied Voices and Ringing Phones A week ago, my coworker and I were in the kitchen area. It was roughly 3:30 a.m., and we were filling up our cups, just yakking away. We both stop talking, and at that time we both heard a little girl say “YEAH.” Of course we did the, “Did you hear that?” More activity occurred during some remodeling, but nothing major. The hotel is adding new tables, chairs, and beds. And while the activity is minor so far, I’m looking forward to seeing what else happens. Typically when we remodel, the activity kicks up. For those of us who work the night shift at the hotel, I would say the strangest thing happening of late revolves around the phones. One night the phones just started to We had one guest that saw the spirit of a woman in room 717, hands to her face as she whimpered. However, this night, nothing was appearing in the caller ID field. This went on for roughly five minutes. During this time period, the air had changed in the tea court. The air felt very thin. And if we walked into the tea court, it felt like we were being watched by a number of eyes. And, at the same time, there were knocks and such coming from the area that could not be identified. I can’t be 100 percent sure these events were paranormal. But with everything happening in a quick span of five minutes and then having the area go back to being quiet, it made me and my coworkers that were with me that night wonder if our friends were having some fun with us. 56 Paranormal Underground May 2013 May 2013 Paranormal Underground 57 Personal Experiences: Reader Encounters WHO IS TICKLING MY FEET? By Paulette Ballard A fter my grandfather passed away, Granny and her sister, my Aunt Icie, slept in twin beds in the same room. Two of Granny’s sons also lived with them. While visiting Granny one day, she told us Aunt Icie had started laughing during the night and it woke Granny up. She said, “Icie, stop laughing and go back to sleep.” Aunt Icie said, “I can’t help it. Somebody is tickling my feet.” Granny told her she was dreaming and to go back to sleep. From time to time Aunt Icie would wake up laughing, and she always told Granny the same story — someone was tickling her feet. Sometime after Aunt Icie died, Granny woke up one night feeling someone playing with her feet. At the dinner table one Sunday, we were talking about whether we believed in ghosts or not. Granny said she had a ghost in her bedroom, but it was a friendly ghost. We asked her what she was talking about, and she told us the same thing her sister had said about someone tickling her feet. We didn’t disbelieve her, because Granny was not the type of person to make up something that didn’t really happen. She said she wasn’t worried about it because her “ghost” had never been up to any mischief; it just liked to play with feet. For some reason she thought her ghost was a man who had been in the war. Granny lived to the old age of 97. She was still sharp mentally and could tell us stories in great detail about when she was a teenager and a young married woman. Her doctor told us her mind was in great shape, but her body had just finally given out of old age. After my aunt and Granny both passed away, my husband and I would still go visit my two uncles who lived there. I would stay at my mother’s house, and my husband would Sometime after Aunt Icie died, Granny woke up one night feeling someone playing with her feet. sometimes stay at my Granny’s house with my uncles. I don’t remember exactly what brought up the topic of Granny and her ghost, but my husband made the comment, “I will never sleep in that room again.” I asked him what he was talking about, and he said, “The last time I slept in that room something had a hold of my legs and was trying to pull me out of the bed.” He had never told me that happened, but he firmly believes Granny and Aunt Icie’s room has its own ghost and it didn’t want him to be there. 58 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Interested in Having Paranormal Underground Magazine Mailed Directly to You? http://paranormalunderground.magcloud.com/ And Select the Issues You’d Like to Order. May 2013 Paranormal Underground 59 Visit: Religion And The Paranormal Reconciling the Paranormal with Hinduism and Buddhism By Melinda Stum, South Sound Paranormal Research T he religious faith traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism have significant, long-lasting roots in our human history. These traditions are remarkably similar. Yet, they differ significantly in their perspectives of the human soul (or essence), the process of reincarnation, and the experience of the disembodied spirit (e.g., ghosts). Hinduism: The theological anthropology of Hinduism states that the human person is composed of three components: the physical body, the ksooshma shareera, and the soul. The ksooshma shareera is an impression, similar to a carbon copy, of the human experience through our five physical senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting. This impression is held by the soul, particularly when the soul departs from the physical body. When the soul and impressions depart the physical body at death, the impressions must be destroyed to release the soul for reincarnation. These impressions are destroyed with the various death and burial rituals of the Hindu faith tradition. Yet, the soul and impressions may remain on this earthly realm as disembodied spirits. In Hinduism, these disembodied spirits are referred to as preta, pey, pret, or pretam. These disembodied spirits are often associated with unnatural, untimely deaths or the lack of proper Hindu death and burial rituals. The disembodied spirit is not in a permanent state of being. The impressions will fade and be destroyed in due natural course. The amount of time will depend upon the aspirations and desires of the disembodied impressions (panda shareera). The Hindu rituals performed for deceased ancestors destroy the remaining impressions of all deceased persons. Further, an annual ceremony known as sharaadha A statue of Shiva in yogic meditation. This Statue of Shiva is approximately 65 feet tall and is made of concrete. It is located at Murugeshpalya at Bangalore. (Author: Kalyan Kumar, September 2, 2006) is held to destroy all the remaining impressions of the deceased. Therefore, the Hindu tradition releases the soul from these impressions for reincarnation through religious rituals. The mythology (e.g., narratives) of Hinduism further embraces the disembodied spirit. There are references in the Puranas (Hindu sacred text) to an army of disembodied spirits, which is commanded by Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is a person of the Hindu Trinity that represents the 60 Paranormal Underground May 2013 cyclic process of continually dissolving and recreating the universe through birth/creation, preservation, death/dissolution, and reincarnation/recreation. Lord Shiva’s disembodied army is not able to enter into (or possess) another physical body, because Hindu theological anthropology states the physical body can house only one spirit (and impressions). Buddhism: The theological anthropology in Buddhism differs significantly from that of Hinduism. In Buddhism, the Buddha denied the existence of a permanent self (or soul) that reincarnates from this life into the next. The Buddha’s objection was rooted in the philosophy that nothing is permanent; therefore, the continually transforming consciousness cannot be identified with the traditional, permanent soul. Buddha discussed the illusion of a self, which is materialized by five skandha. These skandha are intertwined, impermanent (anitya), continually transforming, without an abiding principle, but are the entirety of human nature. These skandha are: 1. The physical body or the material form (rupa). 2. The sensations (vedana) of the physical body: seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting. 3. Cognition (sanna) or the process of mentally classifying experiences. 4. The mental constructions (sankhara) that initiate action. 5. The consciousness (vijnana) or awareness about a sensory or material object. If the soul is simply an illusion, what is reincarnated? Karma. Karma is a law of moral causation, which states that an individual’s current state of being is the result of actions in the current or the past incarnations. It is not an illusion. It is transferred from the previous life into the next without a substance (self or soul). It resembles a flame (light), which may be transferred from one candle to another without a “substance” of its own. Therefore, rebirth can occur with the transfer of karma, but not a soul or self from one physical body into another. According to The Tibetan Book of the Dead, an intermediary state exists between one incarnation and the next. The implication is that the deceased individual, whose existence is in the intermediary state, does continue to possess personal attributes rooted in the skandha. Another implication is that the personal attribute is a mental, disembodied essence that cannot be injured. However, the personal attributes (including memory) is destroyed prior to the next incarnation. Thus, the individual, after reincarnation, will not possess memories of their previous incarnations or experiences in the intermediary state of being. The Great Statue of Buddha Amitabha, Kōtoku Temple, Kamakura, Japan. (Photo taken: May 2004.) Monk Bhante Seelawimala, a professor at The Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, California, discussed a state of being comparable to the disembodied spirit. The existence of the disembodied essence is frequently related to the state of mind at the moment of death. If the deceased individual was in an extreme state of anger, depression, or oppression, their disembodied essence may remain. Additionally, if the deceased individual was significantly attached to or addicted to the material world (or a particular component of it) their disembodied essence may remain. Similar to Hinduism, however, their karma will fade and eventually reincarnate into the next life. Conclusion Hinduism and Buddhism are religious faith traditions with significant roots in our human history. Due to the history, the personal perspectives of adherents may differ, including their perspective of the paranormal (especially disembodied spirits). Yet, these traditions provide an arena for their adherents to embrace their paranormal experiences from a position of faith and not in spite of it. May 2013 Paranormal Underground 61 Author Spotlight “The Scent of Freedom” Mhairi Simpson: M By Michelle M. Pillow, www.MichellePillow.com Mhairi Simpson’s work often includes griffins, unicorns, werewolves, and/ or vampires. And because she likes a laugh, there are also pink mice and gods with faulty moral compasses. hairi Simpson is a fantasy writer (mostly blood and inner demons) and inveterate traveler (mostly Europe and South America). An only child who grew up in boarding schools and with a background in modern languages and paper pushing, Mhairi has spent most of her life with words on a page, leading her to realize her best shot at faking sanity is to be a full-time author/editor. Mhairi’s newest paranormal fantasy, The Scent of Freedom (October 2012), is currently in e-book and available at most online retailers. ***** Q: In your book, The Scent of Freedom, your heroine is a demon hunter who can see smells. What inspired you to create such a character? Mhairi: Sir Terry Pratchett created a character in Guards, Guards; I believe it was a werewolf. When in wolf form, she could see smells. But I remember one line, which said at some point, the communication between wolf and human broke down, and she couldn’t fully explain part of the experience. And I thought what would it be like for a human, or something that looked (mostly) human, to have that ability? How would they put it into words? And The Hunter was born. Q: When world building, did you base your story off of known myths throughout history? Mhairi: Not in this case, unless you count where the smell part came from. She doesn’t shape-shift, she can’t fly, and she doesn’t suck blood. She does have to eat a lot more than humans (much faster metabolism), and she has long blades growing out of her spine, between her shoulders, which she can use in a fight (an idea I borrowed from Galaxy Quest’s interpretation of Sarris). She comes from a culture I invented, drawing I sup- pose, on some (possibly wrong) ideas I have about wolves. Excellent hunters and happier in the cold than the heat. The Hunter series (there will be more coming in 2013) is based on Earth, but an Earth with demons. And possibly other things too … *looks mysterious*. Q: Why do you think readers, and society in general, are fascinated by the paranormal? Mhairi: I think we all like the idea of the unknown, and many, if not all, of us would love some ability or other that lifted us above the rest and made us “special.” But in a way that made us stronger and, dare I say it, cooler, rather than just being ostracized, which so many people have to deal with these days. Q: What are your favorite paranormal shows, movies, and books? Mhairi: I love paranormal romance, which is kind of strange because I don’t write it. Not yet, anyway! I adore Supernatural and the Black Dagger Brotherhood and PsyChangeling paranormal romance series. I also love Kait 62 Paranormal Underground May 2013 Nolan and Susan Bischoff’s paranormal romances. All of these have super-hot male and all-around wonderful female characters in common. Just perfect. :D Q: Do you believe in the supernatural? Or are you a skeptic? Mhairi: I definitely believe. Q: Have you ever had a paranormal experience? Mhairi: I already believed before this, but spending the night at a friend’s house where a pair of (ghostly) children ran up and down the stairs all night, giggling to each other, would have convinced me if I didn’t already believe. Q: What kind of paranormal creatures do you wish you could meet? Mhairi: I would love to meet a unicorn, although not like in Supernatural! A werewolf could be pretty cool, too … Q: If given the chance, would you become a paranormal creature? Mhairi: I reckon I could handle becoming a shape-shifting unicorn. I have one of those in one of my, as of yet, unpublished stories (she meets a werewolf, as it happens), and she is pretty cool. I’d be able to run at 40 mph! What more reason does a girl need? Q: How would you react if you came face to face with a ghost? Mhairi: Probably scream and run away. I’m a big wuss. The friend whose house I stayed at (see above) put down salt and sage to stop the kids coming into the room where I was sleeping, but it took me a while to accept that it was working and to go to sleep! Q: What does the future hold for your writing? Mhairi: So much! I have stories in the pipeline in about half a dozen worlds right now, and more ideas come to me every day. This year I hope to publish more in the Blowe and Hunter worlds, as well as the Wychride world (I had a short story published in this world last year in an anthology, Tales of the Nun and Dragon — my print debut, as it happens), as well as finish the novel I’m currently editing (and hopefully write another book in that series too). I also have several short stories and novellas planned for the same world as that unicorn/werewolf one I mentioned above, more novellas and stories in various other worlds, and a couple of screenplays I’d like to write (difAfter 30 years of hunting demons, the Hunter needs just two more. Two more dead demons and the family debt will be repaid. But when an old friend gets in the way, she must make a choice: to save him or her honor. ferent worlds again). I certainly have plenty to be getting on with! Q: Have you ever been to a psychic and/or a pastlife regression? Mhairi: I’ve been to a few, but I can’t remember them predicting anything major. Q: Have you ever been abducted by aliens? Mhairi: No, and I’m glad. I doubt I’d handle it too well if it did happen! ***** To learn more about Mhairi Simpson and her books, visit mhairisimpson.com.
