The Paranormal Top 10 List
Top 10 Reasons Death May not be as Frightening as You Think By Karen Frazier, South Sound Paranormal Research & Paranormal Underground Radio
recent episode of Syfy’s Paranormal Witness featured vignettes from hospital patients who had encountered the embodiment of death. On the show, Death appeared as a punitive and frightening dark mass that came for people on death’s door. Watching, I couldn’t help but feel discouraged at how many people would be frightened by this reportedly true portrayal of what it’s like to die. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, necrophobia (fear of death) is the second most common fear in the United States, falling just after public speaking and well ahead of spiders, which holds the number three spot. Approximately 68% of the U.S. population fears dying. I understand the fear. As a younger person, I was afraid of dying. Over the years as I’ve studied afterlife research, however, things have changed. While I certainly don’t want to die soon because my family needs me, and I hope I don’t die painfully, I’m not afraid of being dead. The way I figure, one of two things will happen. Either I will merely cease to exist in all forms or my consciousness will somehow survive bodily death. If it’s the former, I won’t know anyway because I’ll be dead. If it’s the latter, I’ll be on to my next adventure. While death remains one of life’s great mysteries, afterlife researchers have attempted to pull back the veil between this side and the other. What they are finding doesn’t match the frightening vision so many have of dying. Here are 10 interesting pieces of information that have come out in the course of afterlife research.
10. A 2000 University of Virginia Health System study of 550 people reporting near-death experiences showed that a vast majority of the people studied who had neardeath experiences lost all fear of death and were convinced they would survive bodily death.
A majority of people who have anecdotally reported traditional near-death experiences felt very little fear. Instead, they reported comforting elements, such as a welcoming light, indescribably beautiful music, and dead loved ones waiting to usher them to the other side. For example, in the previously cited study, 83% said deceased loved ones welcomed them to the other side.
8. Dr. Ian Stevenson studied and documented

The Paranormal Top 10 List more than 3,000 cases of reported reincarnation. Dr. Stevenson was the Head of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia. With careful questioning of the children and families studied in these cases, Dr. Stevenson reached the conclusion that reincarnation was a “possible reality,” suggesting that consciousness did, indeed, survive bodily death. You can read some of the cases in Dr. Stevenson’s book, Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation.
At the University of Arizona, Dr. Gary Schwartz has been conducting research into survival of consciousness after bodily death. Using a series of increasingly controlled experiments with psychic mediums, Dr. Schwartz has found that the psychic mediums are able to supply information to sitters from people who have passed at a rate that is well above chance, suggesting consciousness survives death.
Many of the messages that the tested psychic mediums communicated offered comfort for the living that the deceased was peaceful, happy, and fulfilled.
4. A group of scientists and scholars from research
institutions around the world, such as University of California at Davis, University of Iceland, University of Edinburgh, and University of Washington, have created a group dedicated to studying the survival of consciousness after bodily death. While their research is ongoing, they have concluded that much empirical evidence makes a significant case for conscious survival after death.
3. Pioneering near-death experiences researcher 10
Jeffrey Keene had spontaneous recall of a life as Civil War General John B. Gordon. He shares his story in his book, Someone Else’s Yesterday. Keene began researching Gordon after his spontaneous recall and was amazed at the similarities between the two men. Not only are they similar in physical appearance, but Keene has birthmarks on his body in the exact locations Gordon was wounded in the war. The similarities appear to extend well beyond normal coincidence.
Scientists still seek proof that the consciousness survives after physical death.
Dr. Michael Newton and Dr. Brian Weiss have both performed thousands of sessions of life-betweenlives hypnotherapy. Dr. Weiss is a medical doctor, while Dr. Newton holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology. Both stumbled on life between lives during normal regression hypnotherapy with patients. In the life-between-lives sessions, patients have reported strikingly similar cases of full lives lived “on the other side,” which is a place of comfort and love.
Dr. Raymond Moody is a medical doctor with an emphasis in psychiatry. His research into near-death experiences spans more than four decades. In his research, Dr. Moody has discovered incredible similarities in near-death experience reports. Interestingly, Dr. Moody also has studied shared death experiences, in which people at the side of a dying loved one also experience several of the aspects of a shared death experience.
A 2013 peer-reviewed study on near-death experiences conducted by scientists in Belgium (Characteristics of Near-Death Experiences Memories as Compared to Real and Imagined Events Memories) found “that NDE memories contained more characteristics than real event memories and coma memories. Thus, this suggests that they cannot be considered as imagined event memories. On the contrary, their physiological origins could lead them to be really perceived although not lived in the reality.” Scientists Continue to Search for Proof of Life After Death Science has yet to hit on absolute proof that our consciousness survives death. It does seem, however, that scientists are circling ever closer to conclusive proof, although it is likely we currently lack the methods or technology to prove life after death. In the meantime, a preponderance of evidence strongly suggests that we are not merely whisked away into oblivion when our bodies die. For me, this evidence, along with my personal research and experiences, removed my fear of what happens after I draw my last breath in this body.

Audio Editing Software By Jack Kenna, Rensselaer Paranormal Research and S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England
n my last article, I discussed digital audio recorders, probably “the” most important piece of equipment in the arsenal of the paranormal investigator. Just as important though, and directly related to the audio recorder, is the audio editing software that you should use to review your recordings with. While it’s true that you can just review your audio right on the recorder itself, it won’t allow you to pull out audio clips of potential EVPs or to, if necessary, clean up the audio of those potential EVPs in order to hear them more clearly. To do that you will need to download the original audio files to your computer and then play them back on some type of audio software. Types of Digital Audio Editing Software I realize that “software” isn’t exactly “equipment,” but it is a very important tool for the paranormal investigator. It goes hand in hand with your digital audio recorder when it comes to reviewing your audio files for EVPs. Although your new audio recorder will come with its own software, this software is very limited in what it can do, and the quality and type of filters it has, such as volume amplify and noise reduction, are limited or non-existent. So what other types of audio software are there, and where can you get them? There are numerous audio editing software packages available, and all of them are available on the Internet, but which ones are right for doing EVP work? Even more important, what do you really need to look for in an audio editing program for EVP review? The important thing to remember as a paranormal investigator is that you don’t want to do too much in the way of editing to your audio. When it comes to EVPs, the less editing you do the better. At times though you may want to try and clean up the audio file to be able to better hear an EVP. To do this you will need a program that has “filters” that allow you to enhance the audio by removing background noise, such as hiss and pop, and to amplify the audio.
This is all that I will do myself when it comes to editing my EVP files; when possible I won’t do anything at all to them, or I will at most just amplify the audio. So at this point you may be asking: “So if the audio program that came with my recorder has these filters, then why do I need a another program?” The answer is: “Because the qualities of the filters you will use vary greatly from program to program.” Remember that all the software we use is written in various types of computer code. These codes and the language they are written in determine the quality and reliability of the program and the functions it has. The programs that come with your recorder are very simple programs, and the filters that come with them are not of great quality. This will significantly affect the sound and results you get from the EVP when you edit, and in some cases the filters you apply to your EVP can even distort it.
There are some very good programs out on the Internet that have excellent editing filters, and the programs are either free or their Pro Versions are very reasonably priced. Probably the best audio editing program out there though is Adobe Audition, an extremely powerful and high-quality audio editing program but also expensive. Adobe does provide a free 30-day trial of the program, though, so you can decide if it’s right for you. In my personal opinion, Audition is far more than the paranormal investigator needs for EVP work and, in our case, not worth the money. There are several other programs out there that are worth the expense for the Pro Versions if you’re a seasoned and/or serious investigator, but the beginning investigator or paranormal enthusiast will be more than pleased with the results and functions of the free versions. Here are the audio editing programs I recommend for EVP work.
3. GoldWave Digital Audio Editor by GoldWave Inc (Free Version and Full Version Available) Like Dexster, this program has a very user-friendly interface. It does lack some filters and tools, but they may be a bit complicated for someone who has never used an audio editing program before. The full version does give you a few filters you may want to use for enhancing your EVPs, and the $49 cost for the lifetime license is reasonable. They also offer a one-year full version license of the program for $19. 4. Audacity by the Audacity Team (Free Software) Audacity is a fully free program; it was the first audio editing program I ever used for EVP work. It’s a great program for the beginner and paranormal enthusiast, as it’s very easy to use, has good filters and tools, and it’s completely free. In my opinion, the filters are not as high quality as Dexster or Wavepad, but they are adequate. This is a great audio program to learn audio editing on and then move on to a more advanced program. I strongly recommend this one to those just starting out in the paranormal field. That about covers everything on audio editing software you will need for your EVP work. I hope that you find all of this information helpful or at least informative. You can also find much more detailed information about all of these products online. Here are some of the Websites you can check out to get more detailed information on audio editing software 1. Audio Editing Software Reviews: http://audioediting-software-review.toptenreviews.com/. This Website provides great detailed reviews of the first three audio programs I have discussed, as well as many others. 2. WavePad Sound Editor: http://www.nch.com.au/ wavepad/index.html. Download the free version or purchase the Master’s Edition. 3. Dexster Audio Editor: http://www.softdivshareware. com/audioeditor.html. Download the free version or purchase the Full Edition. 4. GoldWave Digital Audio Editor: http://www.goldwave.com/. Download the free version or purchase the Full Edition. 5. Audacity Free Sound Editor: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. Download the free software. If you have any questions regarding equipment to use for investigating the paranormal, feel free to contact me by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I found WavePad to be my personal choice for EVP work.
1. WavePad Sound Editor by ©NCH Software (Free Version and Master’s Edition Available) After trying several other free programs and even the free trial of Adobe Audition, I found WavePad to be my personal choice for EVP work. This program has a good user-friendly interface, the filters are of high quality, and the program is reliable and stable. Creating audio clips from the master audio file is easy. I prefer to save clips of the audio sections where I find a potential EVP so that I can edit the clip file and leave the original file unedited. The free version of WavePad provides the two basic editing filters you need for EVP work: Amplify Audio and Noise Reduction. The Master’s Edition provides these and much more, but the ones I use the most in the Master’s Edition for EVP work are Amplify Audio, High-Pass Filter, and Speed Change. The ability to have the use of the last two filters was well worth the $60 cost of the program. 2. Dexster Audio Editor by SoftdivSD Software (Free Version and Full Version Available) The free version of this software is adequate for EVP work, but the full version has many more useful filters. The program is very user friendly and easy to navigate. The full version cost is approximately $45. I don’t like it as much as WavePad only because WavePad has more advanced features than Dexster, and thus is more useful to me personally for the amount of EVP work that I do. Dexster Audio Editor is a very good program, though, for those looking for an easy-to-use audio editing program for reviewing and editing their audio.

Deep South Paranormal’ Southern By Cheryl Knight
ebuting on the Syfy channel in April 2013, Deep South Paranormal follows a bayou-based paranormal research team on a mission to unlock the mysteries of the South. The Deep South team includes investigators from DOA Paranormal from Alabama and Down South Paranormal Research from Louisiana. The new reality show features investigations of swamp apparitions, haunted plantation houses, and Southern voodoo legends, among other paranormal phenomena. Paranormal Underground recently spoke with Jon Hodges, Benny Reed, and Keith Ramsey, known as The Bama Boys of Deep South Paranormal, about their interest in the paranormal, the TV show, and their investigative methodologies. ***** Q: When was Deep South Paranormal originally formed? Jon: Deep South Paranormal was a team originally created for the television program on Syfy, but that doesn’t mean we all didn’t know each other before it happened. The paranormal community is a close knit group of individuals. Keith, Benny, and I have a local group in Huntsville, Alabama, that we created years ago called DOA Paranormal. A few years back we were looking at investigating some places around the New Orleans area and reached out to some of our “paranormal brother.” This just happened to be Randy Hardy and Kevin Betzer of Down South Paranormal Research. We briefly kept in touch through the years and were pleasantly surprised when Syfy chose their group and our group as the final two teams for the show, because the original plan was just to choose one of us for the show. We then shot a casting show for Syfy, and once they saw how well we worked together and how different southerners from Alabama and southerners from Louisiana were, they knew they had an awesome mix, so they just combined us and made one team. I’m thinking how
Benny Reed, Jon Hodges, and Keith Ramsey, known as the Bama Boy mysteries surrounding some of
’s Bama Boys Investigate Mysteries well we worked together, though, might have been the real driving factor. Q: Tell us about Deep South Paranormal’s team members.
ys, joined the Deep South Paranormal team in an effort to unlock the f the South’s age-old mysteries.
Jon: We’ve got a great bunch of investigators that all bring something a little different to the table. I think this is what makes our team so strong, all the diversity we have and how we all come from different walks of life. Of course your got our two beards, Hart Fortenbery and Keith. Keith and Hart both are musicians by trade and pretty dang good ones at that! Benny is an electronics tech at a government contractor, Kevin is a bartender at a casino, Kali and Randy Hardy’s family owns a bar outside of New Orleans, and I work a desk job in HR. So we have musicians, blue-collar workers, white-collar workers, bartenders, you name it. When you put such a diverse group of individuals together and add our Southern roots and our way of doing things, you’ve got magic. And this is what we feel Deep South Paranormal has, magic. We all bring different ideas when it comes to investigating. I tend to be the more level-headed guy who tries to always have a plan for the group, hence my nickname The Man With The Plan. Benny brings a side of humor to investigations by always keeping the team on their toes. But when it is time to investigate, he’s all business. Randy is more of the guy who likes to meet the spirits head on. Sometimes this is effective, but sometimes he asks for more than he bargains for. Kevin is the gadget/tech guy. He is the group’s own make-shift MacGyver. Keith brings a more sensitive side to the investigations. He may look like a Sasquatch, but the boy is extremely sensitive to spirits — plus he plays a mean guitar that the team uses often in investigations. Hart brings a sense of the old ways to an investigation. The team loves to mix modern equipment with some of Hart’s old hocus pocus tricks.
Paranormal Underground 15
Investigator Spotlight The Bama Boys highly doubted Hart’s ways in the beginning, but by the time season 1 was over, we had started to come around quickly! Kali, Randy’s little sister, survived Katrina. Do I need to say more? She’ll kick any of our asses. LOL. Q: What is Deep South Paranormal’s mission? Jon: Our mission at Deep South Paranormal is to bring what the south has to offer into the spotlight. The team is not the main focus of the show, but more the South. We like to take these old ghost stories and legends that have been passed down through the years and see what truths they have. Every good story that has been passed down for generations is based on some type of truth. Our goal as a team is to find that truth and the paranormal activity that goes along with it. Of course, anytime we can take this on a personal level and help a family in need, that’s just a bonus to all of us.
Q: Do you employ any particular methodologies during your investigations? Benny: Jon always tries to have a plan going into an investigation. He wants to make sure that the team is using the right equipment, knows the correct history, and is using the correct methods while investigating. Everyone knows that it depends on what type of case you are doing that will determine the method that you use. But more often than not, you go in and let the investigation and spirits determine your methodology. It’s good to have a plan going in, but it’s better and smarter to know when to abandon the plan and use your wit and senses. All the equipment is great, but your body and senses are the best pieces of equipment you have. Benny, Keith,
Q: What types of cases and sites did you investigate before doing the TV show? Benny: We’ve investigated many different sites through the years. Some of the more notable ones have been some of the old Mills around Huntsville (Lincoln Mills). We’ve investigated several old hospitals on many occasions (South Pittsburgh, Lincoln County Hospital); places around the legendary town of Lynchburg, TN, where Jack Daniels whiskey is made; old jails; cemeteries; bars; individual’s homes. You name it, and we’ve probably investigated it. Some of the members have had the opportunity to actually investigate some of the more high-profile places across the U.S., such as The Stanley Hotel; Savannah, GA; Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham; Amargosa Opera House; Washoe Club in Virginia City, etc. So again, lots of different types of places through the years, but this only makes us stronger investigators. Q: What types of equipment do you use during investigations? Benny: We use a mix of modern equipment with a little dash of the old school ways. We use REM-Pods, K-II Meters, digital voice recorders, laser grids, thermal cameras, full-spectrum cameras, laser thermometers — all of the modern equipment that we’ve accumulated through the years. But we match this with methods outside the box, such as Keith’s guitar, which has been an amazing piece of equipment for us, and also through Hart’s Gris-Gris stick, which he uses often. It’s a perfect storm of the old versus the new, and it’s a mean combination!

and I have been investigating together for a long time and almost know what the other is thinking before they speak. If being professional and having uncanny abilities to work as a team, if that is a method of investigating, that would be The Bama Boys. Q: How do the team members interact with each other during investigations on the show? Keith: As Jon mentioned, especially between Benny and Jon, they almost can just look at each other and know what the other is thinking. So because of this and how they can read my actions, the three of us mostly investigate together on cases. Randy is a perfect yin to Hart’s yang, so they seem to
work well together. Plus, being from New Orleans, he can understand Hart a little better. We, The Bama Boys, can’t understand what the hell he says half the time! LOL! Kali is still learning the ropes but is an amazing learner and will probably be better than all of us one day. Kevin, with his knowledge of the equipment, he works well with any of us. So we kind of investigate in certain teams, but that is what is so amazing about our group. Put Hart with me or Jon with Randy, etc., it’s the perfect combination whoever investigates together. Q: What is some advice you would give to someone getting into the field? Keith: Don’t let your mind get the best of you. So often, people starting out in this field let their minds flash back to a scary movie they’ve seen or something they’ve watched on TV. Remember, things normally do not occur the way they do in a movie. Ninety-nine percent of the time you are not going to witness someone crawling across the ceiling or there isn’t going to be a zombie around the corner. Just clear your mind and keep calm. Your mind and your imagination is your worst enemy when doing an investigation. Q: How did the team end up with a TV show? Jon: After doing research on the South, Syfy narrowed down their search to 50-plus paranormal teams. They chose two, which were Kevin and Randy’s group out of New Orleans and The Bama Boy’s group, DOA Paranormal, out of Huntsville, Alabama. They wanted to choose just one of us for the show, but after they saw how we worked together and how different southerners are, they put us together and the rest is history. We couldn’t ask for a stronger, more experienced team. The New Orleans guys were the gas, and The Bama Boys and DOA Paranormal were the fire! Q: What has it been like doing investigations for the TV show?
) work as a well-oiled machine with their other teammates on r, Randy Hardy, Hart Fortenbery, and Kali Hardy.
Jon: It was really strange at first. Everyone has to remember that we are just normal guys who work their regular jobs during the week. So the first time we did an investigation with a camera shoved in our face, it was extremely weird and kind of uncomfortable. But as the season goes along, you kind of start ignoring the cameras and blocking them out. I think if you watch the first season of Deep South Paranormal, you definitely can see the whole team get more comfortable with each episode. Toward the end of the season, you pretty much just forget the cameras are there and do your thing. That’s the biggest key; you have
Paranormal Underground 17
Investigator Spotlight all exits and entrances covered, and then you see something like that, what else could it be? Jon and I experienced a women screaming at us on one occasion when no women were present and they were the only two investigators in the area. I could literally write a small book about all the experiences we have had that we feel prove the existence of the afterlife. You will always have skeptics, unless the skeptics are there with you and experience it for themselves. That’s why it’s important to investigate for yourself, not for someone else. You will be much more successful. Always be true to yourself and what you are in the field for. Q: What would surprise viewers most about the Deep South Paranormal team? Benny, Keith, and Jon of Deep South Paranormal want fans to know they are just normal folks.
to remember to just be yourself and don’t worry that there is a million people watching you! That is something it took a while to get in our heads. But like I said, you just go out there and do your thing and not worry about it. Q: Tell us about some of the team’s most intriguing cases investigated so far. Benny: We have been blessed to be able to investigate some amazing places so far. One that comes to mind is first the case where we helped the Palmer Family in Florida at the Oluste Battlefield. To be able to put the pieces of a giant puzzle together and show this family why their house is haunted was an amazing feeling. Another case that comes to mind is witnessing with our eyes and capturing the Lady in Black in Prattville. That was something that none of us will ever forget. Being from Alabama, we’ve heard this legend our entire life. But it was unbelievable to be able to investigate the place and bring evidence back to the Mayor of the town that validated what people have seen for a hundred years. Q: What evidence have you collected to date that you feel proves the existence of an afterlife? Benny: We have actually been able to capture the “Holy Grail” on several occasions through the years — that being a full-body apparition. At one of the abandoned hospitals we visited, we actually captured on camera a person stepping out of a room, looking at us, and then walking back in the room. The key is to create a controlled environment. If you know no one is there with you and you have
Keith: We hear so often that people are surprised that we are just normal folks. We get on Facebook and try to respond and thank all our fans for their support, and so often they can’t believe we are thanking them. Maybe just call it how we were raised, but people shouldn’t be thanking us for responding to an e-mail or a Facebook post. We should be thanking them for taking time out of their day to show us love. We are just down to earth, old country boys that happen to be lucky enough to get chosen for a TV show. It is so important to us to be ourselves at all times and never change who we are. “We say grace, and we say ma’am. If you ain’t into that, we don’t give a damn!” Hank Williams Jr. could not say it any better. Q: How can people reach the team online? Keith: You can reach Deep South Paranormal by going to our Facebook page. There are also several Fan Pages that have been created by our awesome fans on Facebook. We try to get on often to respond to questions and thank folks for checking us out and showing support. Our local group, DOA Paranormal, can be reached on Facebook as well or by e-mail at doaparanormal@ gmail.com. We always welcome questions or comments and would love to hear from everyone. Q: Would you like to add anything else? Jon: Just a big thank you to all our supporters and fans out there. We are so blessed to be backed by such amazing people. Thank you fans!

Haunted Orange County Hosts Paranormal Events By Cheryl Knight
range County, California, is home to many reported haunted locations, including The Royer Mansion, The Yost Theatre, The White House Restaurant, Black Star Canyon, and Mission San Juan Capistrano, among many other sites. For those adventurers looking to learn more about the haunted history of the area, as well as possibly run into a few spirits from the beyond during a local investigation, Haunted Orange County offers locals and tourist both paranormal tours and investigation events. Ernie Alonzo, Haunted Orange County founder and director, recently talked with Paranormal Underground about his mission with the organization and his plans for the future. ***** Q: How did Haunted Orange County come to life? Ernie: Haunted Orange County (HOC) began as a simple, free Website that I set up to share ghost stories I had collected from historic Old Towne Orange, California, where I was born and raised. The Website was called Haunted Orange and consisted of historic photos and ghost stories based off of interviews I had conducted with local residents and business owners. I spent hours in our library’s history center in search of historic data to match up some of the claims I had collected. The tours came to be a few months after I was introduced to Charles Spratley, a San Diego native, local historian, and author of Piercing the Veil — Examining San Diego’s Haunted History. Charles had extensive experience in running a ghost tour company in San Diego and had recently relocated to Orange County. With most of the footwork and research already completed, Charles got to work on the finishing touches, which brought our ghost tour to life.

In 2009, we purchased exhibitor space at the Orange International Street Fair, a three-day event held Labor Day weekend and attended by over half a million visitors. That’s when we introduced HOC to the community. The following weekend, the much anticipated Old Towne Orange Haunted History Ghost Walk was launched to enthusiastic throngs of locals. Since that time, our tours have hosted over 4,500 guests and visitors from all over the country, including private corporate tours for Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Chapman University, and The Walt Disney Co., to name a few. Q: What do you think sets you apart from other companies doing the same thing? Ernie: HOC operates year round. We really go out of

our way to give our guests a top-notch experience; I like to think of ourselves as the Nordstrom of paranormal event companies. We add the little extras that end up making a big difference. We offer something for everyone, from our popular ghost walks to monthly lectures on various paranormal topics, investigation events, UFO Sky Watches, monthly podcast shows, dinners with guest speakers, and special themed events. In recent months, we’ve begun partnering with local historic organizations to aid in their fundraising efforts while giving guests a different look at familiar locations.
Adventures Crew was scheduled to film at. In my conversation with Jeff, I was happy to inform him that the building our historical society is housed out of has a long history of hauntings. To make a long story short, they ended up adding our location to the episode and filming there for two days. Working with the guys and the entire production crew was a great experience from start to finish. The upcoming exposure could not have come at a better time for us. Our newest ghost tour launches in Santa Ana later this summer and features the location investigated on the episode.
Q: Tell us about your newest additions to HOC.
Q: Where do you see HOC in the near future?
Ernie: We are really fortunate to have built a great reputation over the past four years and in doing so have had an opportunity to work with some outstanding individuals. We have a team of 12, each specializing in a specific skill set. Our newest official additions this year are Ben Hansen, host of Syfy’s Fact or Faked; actor Chad Lindberg, who’s also an amazing investigator; and Scott Gruenwald of Travel Channel’s Paranormal Paparazzi. We’re also very fortunate to have Christiane Elin as our director of social media marketing.
Ernie: I see us doing what we currently do but on a grander scale. Approximately 50% of our events already take place outside of Orange County; that’s because there are just so many great locations in Southern California it’s difficult to stay contained to just Orange County. I see us continuing on that trend and taking our historic ghost walk model into neighboring cities that have rich histories and stories to tell. San Juan Capistrano is one location that I would like to focus on next. Our second biggest draws are our paranormal investigation events. Thankfully, in just the past two years, we’ve been able to work with three preservation/historical societies and have had an opportunity to be the first to bring the public into two of these locations to investigate. A multi-city interactive bus tour is also something we’re looking at for 2015.
Q: What has been your most memorable experience since you started HOC? Ernie: Earlier this year I had an opportunity to be featured on an episode of Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, scheduled to air later this summer. I am an associate director for the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society. We were contacted by their researcher, Jeff Belanger, regarding a historic building in downtown Santa Ana that the Ghost

Paranormal Activity: Event Spotlight
Worldwide Free Paranormal Week Kicks Off Sept. 30, 2013 By Cheryl Knight
aranormal Underground recently spoke with Ashley Hall about his work in the field and an upcoming event that he personally spearheaded, called the Worldwide Free Paranormal Week. Find out how you can participate in this special event from anywhere in the world. ***** Q: Tell us about your interest in the paranormal. Ashley: I first developed an interest in the paranormal at a fairly young age. I remember my mother had a few books on the subject with the main one I can remember being Into the Unknown by Readers Digest. I absorbed the information in that book when I was maybe 12-14 years of age. From there it grew into borrowing every book I could find from the school library or the local community library on the different subjects within the scope of the paranormal. Although I was interested in everything paranormal, my main focus was on UFOs and close encounters. When I was about 18, I learned that some of my friends and family had in fact seen UFOs and had lots of interesting stories to tell. I gathered all these experiences up and started getting a knack for interviewing. Before long, I was interviewing anyone I came across who had a personal experience. For about 10 years, I held that focus on UFOs before branching out into other paranormal topics. Today, I focus on just about anything as is evident through the wide range of research and articles I put together. However, I do have a soft spot for ghosts and hauntings. I think maybe it is the fact that investigating potentially haunted locations is so immersive; it is a lot more hands on than just interviewing people ... although a lot of my work is still that. While in the past I have worked with several teams and formed some of my own, I am today a freelance investigator. This means I work with many different teams through invitation. I find it to be my preferred way of working, as I am quite a social person and by working freelance I get to meet many different people and visit locations I probably would not otherwise have had the chance to.
Q: What is the Worldwide Free Paranormal Week? And why did you start this initiative? Ashley: Worldwide Free Paranormal Week is a week where individuals, teams, groups, clubs, and businesses of a paranormal/spiritual nature put on free events for anyone to attend. The idea came about when I posted a question on The Paranormal Guide asking if people would attend a free paranormal event in their area. The response was “yes all round; however, many people responded that there was no such events in their areas but would love to go to one. I have organized and hosted free paranormal meetings in the past, and it was not a hard thing to do. It just took a little organizational work. I wondered why others had not done the same. I looked around and saw that people were hosting events, but they were few and far between, were hard to find, and were mostly in the larger urban areas. People in smaller rural centers miss out on a lot of things; as it is perceived there is no demand, but that is not true. I started asking several teams in smaller towns if they had ever run a meet. Most had not, so I decided to see if I could prompt a few teams to do so. Many liked
the idea, and I thought the idea could really grow. Rather than have events scattered throughout the year, I thought to myself what better way to really focus on a time of the year in order to encourage others to do the same. At first it was a weekend, but after speaking to a few teams, weekends were not always great, as they usually investigated at those times. So it was decided to stretch it for a week. 2013 is the first year for the event, so all the hard groundwork needs to be done so that it has a firm foundation in order to grow. Q: Who can host an event? Ashley: Anyone can host an event. Individuals, groups, teams, businesses, clubs ... anyone who would like to meet other like-minded people. Remember that the real idea behind Worldwide Free Paranormal Week is to meet new people and really open up the paranormal community. Even if you believe you are the sole person in a small town who has a paranormal interest, you might be surprised to find others who have not yet put their hands up but are also interested. It usually just takes a common meeting ground to find others with the same passion. Q: What type of events would you suggest that people hold during this week? Ashley: Anything and everything. So far quite a number of different events have been organized by many different teams out there. Events ranging from meet and greets — where an individual, group, or team fans can come and meet them in person to talk about all things paranormal — to free tours, free investigations, free media events, free workshops ... generally anything you can think of! Probably the easiest event to host would be a meeting. This can be as simple as finding a mutual location — a park/reserve, a meeting room at a library, a conference room at a pub/tavern/hotel, or someplace similar, and inviting people to come along to an open day/night of meeting others with a paranormal and or spiritual interest. Events such as these run themselves; all you need is a day, time, and place, and you can be sure people will come along to discuss their experiences and ask all manner of questions. The events do not have to be any more complicated than that, but if you want to put on something bigger and grander, please do! Q: What do you hope results from the Week? Ashley: The real hope is to see people meeting and networking in an open and friendly manner. There are a lot of people out there who are not part of teams, groups, or

clubs who would really like to meet others in person and share this common interest of ours. I originally stated I would just like to see a few events run in maybe four countries this first time round, and it looks like we will exceed that initial expectation. From here it can only grow and hopefully become something fantastic that everyone can look forward to each year. Q: What else should readers know about the Week? Ashley: The main thing is that the events all need to follow three basic rules: a) The events must be held between Monday, Sept. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013; b) The events need to be free to those wanting to attend (however, you can feel free to take donations for a cause, charity, or the location hosting the event); c) The event must abide by all local laws and regulations to where and how the event is hosted and carried out. All events are 100% owned and are the responsibility of the individual or group that is organizing it. All freeparanormal.com is doing is providing an easy way for people to find the events closest to them. Finally, if you need any help or advice on running an event, you can find help on the free paranormal Website (listed below). Q: How can readers find out more about the Week, as well as contact you if they have more questions. Ashley: If you would like to know more about Worldwide Free Paranormal Week and how to get involved either through attending events or hosting your own, check out www.facebook.com/freeparanormal, www. freeparanormal.com, or talk with any of the many teams already taking part.

Are you the parent of a Para-Normal Child? By Jackie Chin, http://psychicconnextions.blogspot.com/
et me start with saying that all children are born with abilities to sense things around them because they are pure in their energy. What do I mean by pure in energy? They are here from the source from which all things exist. This energy is a light source that surrounds all living things, and in children it burns the brightest. Think of this light around your child as a beacon of light in the darkness. Entities sense this light in their darkness, and they many go to find out what the source of the light is. They may eventually try to communicate with the child. Simply because the entity is near a child, however, does not mean that the child will acknowledge its existence. I strongly believe that the child has to see it and speak to it before the entity can form any sort of attachment, positive or negative. Teaching your child at an early age to not speak to strangers and to let the parent know when a strange is around will help you know when someone is around that is also unseen to you. If your child comes to you and says that they see, hear, or feel someone around them that makes them feel uneasy or that they really like, do not automatically think that it’s their imagination stirring. Take mental notes of when the child sees this person and how they are speaking to you about them. For instance, are they agitated or extremely excited? And for those parents who are just on the fence about all of this psychic stuff, I have nothing to prove to you. But you know your child best, and if they are displaying such information, I’m asking you to simply listen to them. If you find that there is something more to it than just their imagination, e-mail or call me, and I will do what I can to help you figure it out. Your psychic child may exhibit one or more of the
following abilities, but as with all talents they may vary in degree and scope. Empathy (Clairsentience) Perhaps the most helpful and valuable psychic ability for any child is the power of clairsentience, also known as empathy. Empathy is the capability to sense, feel, and comprehend the physical emotions of oth-
ers, including animals or even spirits. Not just by body language, but by the channeling of feelings as well. This ability can also extend to much more, such as being able to project your own emotions onto someone else or feeling the physical sensations of another, i.e., the pain felt from a cut. Children born with this gift can become confused and disoriented if they do not get a certain degree of control over it, especially the ones growing up in an environment of constant emotional problems. This can lead to stress, which can develop some mental and emotional disorders in the child (and not to mention bad habits such as smoking or drug abuse), therefore it is highly important to help the child understand and learn to manage his/her ability. Helping kids grow as a clairsentient can have endless benefits for them. When kids are more aware of other people’s feelings, they tend to have more sympathy toward others, allowing them to interact better and more positive with other people. When a child becomes in tune with another’s emotions, they learn to deal with issues in a more positive form. But also, if a child with a strong empathic ability is not taught to block unwanted emotions, like anger and other related negative feelings, they tend to stress and act in the same manner the source of emotion is behaving. For example, if other kids around them are experiencing negative emotions, then an empathic child has a higher risk of acting in the same manner. Grounding themselves can be helpful when trying to evade and deflect negative energies. Signs of this ability are: • Constantly crying when other children cry. • Very compassionate toward others, animals, and even plants. • Knows exactly how someone is feeling even if the person does not show it. • Can perceive specific details on how and why a person is feeling the way they are. Practical exercises for this ability are: • Close your eyes and try to feel how your child is feeling without checking out his or her body language, and vice-versa by asking him/her to do the same. • To block unwanted emotions, have the child close his/her eyes and to imagine a bubble of golden light surrounding their body.
Telepathy Another useful and astonishing ability is the mental skill of telepathy. This is the ability to perceive the thoughts of a person or light being and also send their own thoughts to that same person or light being. Children born with high levels of this ability can become confused with random and sometimes unwanted thoughts. Adults with such children can often feel upset for fear that the child will learn things that they are too young to handle, or that they have to focus on everything they think about when their child is around. This is why it is extremely important to teach children healthy boundaries at an early age. If you teach them that a person’s body consists of mind, body, and spirit, and that thought is part of that spiritual body and off limits unless there is danger, then you have a good healthy beginning for your psychic child. Benefits for telepathic children are that they always know what is going on in their peer’s lives, and if they feel there is a troubling situation, they may be able to help. They do very well in school most times; if they quiet their mind the answers will come to them. They can tell when someone is lying to them or trying to take advantage. Signs of this ability are: • Finishing people’s sentences on a regular basis. • Talks/writes/draws about something or a certain subject before anyone else exhibits the same thing. • Will come to you before someone calls and tell you who it will be and when. • Talks about the same dream someone else has had the night before. • Connecting with someone on an astral level and coming back with information that you know they could not have known. Practical exercises for this ability are: • Using the Zener symbols (or regular playing cards) on a piece of paper and taking note on how many they get right, and their consistency of accuracy (http://www. psychicscience.org/default.aspx). • Draw a picture and ask your child to close their eyes and concentrate on it; see if they can draw it or get any impressions on what they think it may be. • Think of them in your mind, and see if they respond to you from another room. Most importantly, remember these examples are meant to be fun and informative. Do not over stimulate your child or question them until they become frustrated.
Telepathic children can tell when someone is lying to them.
Paranormal Underground 25
Tell your child that you love them unconditionally and that anything they have to say will be treated with respect and you will not laugh at them.
Clairvoyance (Seers) This ability is the gift of precognition, which gives the seer the ability to have sight into the future. There are many different ways that this gift can be manifested. Mainly, the individual receives mental pictures that can be brought on by talking to someone who is giving off information or someone who asks direct questions. Sometimes the seer can use other tangible means to acquire the information. They may be taught to read tea leaves or tarot cards or look into a bowl of water or stare at a candle flame. All of these methods are used to enhance the images, and none of them are the sole cause as to why the individual can see. There has to be something that triggers these events. The seer must also be taught that they can control what images they receive and when they receive them. Of all the gifts, this one is the most frustrating to some children who feel that they are not in control of their thoughts much of the time once this activity begins to take a part in their lives. I remember when I was very young and I began to see more clearly. It was scary at first because I had no idea where the images were coming from or what, if anything, I was supposed to do about them.
I am happy to say that I had good teachers who gently began to explain how things worked and how one day I would be grateful for the ability. Many time these seeing events come on as dreams, thoughts, or just simply intense feelings about the future, and even sometimes the past. Children with these gifts can often feel confused, misunderstood, and sometimes like outcasts if they talk with others about what they can do. With all the Earth changes and social issues, which can be very overwhelming to us as parents, these visions can take the child by the emotional hand and give them quite a scare. As a parent who is recognizing that this may be in fact what your child is experiencing, it is imperative that you listen to what they have to say. Talking with your child can help to ease their fears and divert emotional issues later. If you fear what your child is seeing, you can contact me at SacrdLite@aol.com, and I can make some suggestions for you to get you some peace of mind. Signs of this ability are: • Talks/draws/writes emotionally about future events that actually come to pass. Practical exercises for this ability are: • Advising them to keep a dream journal to get the information out of their heads. • Tell your child that you love them unconditionally and that anything they have to say will be treated with respect and you will not laugh at them. • Relate to your child even if you have never had a clairvoyant feeling. Tell them that you know what it’s like to have bad feelings or feel overwhelmed. Building trust within your parent/child relationship is extremely important. Mediums: Those Who See Angels and/or Spiritual Energy, Both Deceased and Living This ability is one that can easily get out of hand early if you are not aware of your child’s normal behavior. This can be seen at an early age as the child just having an imaginary friend. However, it can be much more than just a friendly imaginary friend. Children are born directly from the source, and because of this they are seen by those who have died as pure light. This aura around children is like a beacon to those who have peacefully crossed over, as well as those entities who wish to do harm. These children are emotionally and physically highly sensitive to these sorts of energy beings, and once they begin to display this ability, the parent needs
to be very much aware and in touch with the child to guide them. Signs of this ability are: • Talking freely about loved ones who have died, describing them in full, and having knowledge that only the loved one would know. • Describing what it is like on the other side, talking about events that had occurred before the child’s birth, and talking about places that they have never been to before in detail. • Becoming agitated when someone tells them that they are not seeing this spirit and becoming very buoyant when discussing this unseen spirit. • Changes in behavior for the better or worse. • Drawing/writing their visits with the spirit. Practical exercises for this ability are: • When a child tells you that they hear, feel, or see someone with them in their room or in certain areas of their environment, listen to them. Ask them to describe the individual to the best of their ability. •If the child is frightened, agitated, or otherwise
out of sorts with the spirit, listen to them and do not dismiss it as a bad dream. Children are not stupid; they know when something is really just a nightmare or when they feel like someone is really trying to get them. Listen to them and actively take part in removing their fears. The most important thing to remember here is that your child relies on you to protect them. We have three parts to our humanness; they are mind, body, and spirit. Each one of these is interdependent on the other. You know yourself if your mind has become over-extended with worry that eventually your body is going to take a toll. Once this begins, your spiritual body also begins to take a back seat. Many times we pray or experience spiritual matters when we need something. Learning about spirit before you really need help is what these articles are intended to teach. You are blessed simply because you breathe. Understand this and teach your children the same.

hey-Z Radio Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary By Kimberley Simon, http://www.kimberleysimon.com
ita Ost, also known as Hey-Z, grew up in an eclectic family of artists, musicians, actors, and writers. Her creativity was fuelled by her mother, an actress and puppeteer, and her father, also an actor. A vivid imagination and fantasy life further cemented the foundations of the art of storytelling for Zita, shared through her writing and skit scripting. At the age of nine, her world dramatically changed when her father died, a mysterious tragedy that left her mother struggling to support the family while seeking answers from mediums, psychics, and religious leaders. In this environment, Zita began to experience visions, vivid dreams, and “download” messages. One of her first visions, four years after his death, was that of her father. This confirmed for her that her experiences were real and that the soul lives on. Her strong Christian beliefs and her new understanding of the afterlife prodded Zita’s ongoing quest for knowledge and wisdom beyond the ordinary. Zita’s multi-dimensional experiences now “accidentally” include Internet radio where she shares her passion for storytelling and feeds her curiosity voice-to-voice, as she interviews her guests on Situational Awareness with Zita and Ronin (formerly The Broader View) and supports the network hosts to bring their best to the everexpanding number of listeners around the globe. In August 2013, Hey-Z Radio celebrates its one-year anniversary on the air. Zita recently spoke about the HeyZ Radio Network …
further was beyond what my brain could muster. My first experience on-air was as a substitute co-host. A close friend at the time hosted a show that I listened to quite frequently. While we were talking on Skype, he asked me if I would sit in since his regular co-host would not be available. Next thing I knew, I was on the air. No warning, no prep time, and no getting used to the fact that my voice would be heard coast to coast. The minute he said, “We’re on air,” I froze. I’m pretty sure he talked to himself for the first hour. Soon after that, he decided to start a network of his own and asked me if I would co-host with him. It took a few weeks of coaxing and begging on his part before I agreed, and we began preparing for our own show. That’s how it all started.
Q: What first excited you about Internet radio? How did you get started?
Q: When did you know you wanted to start a new Internet radio network? What led you to that?
Zita: Getting into radio was a total fluke and an unexpected surprise. I have no radio or media background of any sort, and my experience with computers was primitive at best. Turning on a computer with numerous errors and symbols flashing at me before it completely shut down was common. I was familiar with Skype, but taking that
Zita: That’s the irony of this whole thing and how Hey-Z came about. When I left the previous network, I never intended to return to radio. “When are you starting your own network?” was the first question people asked me before I left the previous network. My answer was always, “I’m not. I have no plan to start a network or host a show again.”
Zita Ost created Hey-Z Radio one year ago. Today, the network is host to all types of shows, including paranormal and spiritual programs.
As they say, some things are just meant to be, and once that is unique about Hey-Z is the feeling you get when you that opportunity presents itself you can either fight it or go come onto the network. There’s an instant calming effect with the flow. I fought it tooth and nail. Having a show takes that comes over you. It doesn’t matter how controversial a lot of work and commitment, and running a network just the show or guest may be, you feel safe. The atmosphere I adds to that. I planned on retiring my microphone, return to want to present is just that … a calming safe place for everywriting my book, and having a nice quiet life. Plans change. one, and I will strive to maintain that atmosphere. I was still in denial when we premiered the Hey-Z There are other projects in the works that will once Radio Network on August 20, 2012. It all happened very again set the bar even higher for Hey-Z. to teach online.
Zita: Once I saw the impact our shows were having, I knew right then and there what this network would stand for … community — a community of hosts striving for the same thing. Anyone is welcome to listen and participate in the show and chat room without being judged or criticized for their beliefs. Hosts, guests, and listeners are offered the freedom to express themselves on air and in the chat room, without being considered poorly educated or less than curious. We all learn from each other, and if you listen to others with an open mind you take away so much more than you give. Hey-Z is about understanding each other, standing up for what you believe in, and being proud of who you are as a human being with your own thoughts and words. Hey-Z provides the opportunity to commune with each other … to be educated, entertained, and find friendships within these walls. The vision of Hey-Z Radio really isn’t my vision. The vision was created for us. It’s the cumulative vision of everyone involved. My responsibility is to keep the network evolving into something even bigger and better. The vision changes as the message changes. I’ll never stop raising the bar for myself or the show hosts. In order for something to be perfect, you have to strive for perfection. We’re not there yet. Hopefully, we never will be. This is what sets us apart. We will continue to strive to be the best. Q: What are the unique offerings at the network that no other network offers? Zita: The first thing that comes to mind in being unique is the variety of shows on Hey-Z. Each show is unique in itself. No two shows are alike. They may have a similar topic or theme, but each one has its own personality. It’s wonderful to see all of these hosts with different personalities but sharing a goal. The same heart, so to speak. Another thing
Q: What sparked you to bring the additional services and tools to the network? How did you get so SMART? Zita: It wasn’t really a spark. It was more like a need. I listen to what people want or need. If it fits within the feel of Hey-Z, I’ll do what I can to bring it to reality. Internet radio is still in its infancy and is a very competitive market. Although Hey-Z doesn’t compete with any other network, I want Hey-Z to stand above the rest. The only way to do that is to keep it fresh and ever evolving … keep the strong foundation and set that bar a little higher without losing the original message and integrity of Hey-Z. The sky’s the limit as far as I’m concerned. If it can be done, I will find a way to make it so. If you ask any one of the hosts, they will tell you that I expect the same from them. There is no “settling” here. We’ll settle when we get there. Q: How can people find out more about the network, shows, and hosts? Zita: People can visit our Website at www.heyzradio. com; follow us on Twitter at @heyzradio; follow me on Twitter at @theoriginalHeyZ; join our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HeyZRadioNetwork; or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Case Files Of The Unknown: Haunted Sites
By Deborah Lantz, www.facebook.com/yourspiritbeacon
he Strand Theatre, located in historic downtown Delaware, Ohio, is one of my favorite local places to sit back and enjoy a movie on a Friday night or a Saturday matinee, not to mention it has the best popcorn, bar none! The beautiful old theater has been running movies for 97 years. It is the longest continuously running movie theater in the state of Ohio. The Strand Theatre (www.thestrandtheatre.net) opened its doors in 1916 as a vaudeville theater. It has changed hands throughout the years. In 1936, the theater was purchased by the Schine movie theater company and remained under their ownership until 1971 when it was taken over by a married couple named the Johnsons. It switched hands again in 1994 -2002 when the Amato family took over. Today the Strand is owned by Ohio Wesleyan University, also located in Delaware Ohio. My first visit to the Strand was in 1990 after my husband and I moved to Delaware, Ohio. It has become a Lantz family favorite ever since. The theater itself is like walking through a museum of sorts that is dedicated to the Strand’s history. They have old framed flyers on the walls and antique film equipment on display. Unlike many other older theaters, the Strand has state-of-the-art equipment for its patrons. All movies shown here are in digital projection, plus they have recently added a new DCB auditorium. They really understand how to combine the best from the past with the best of the present. From my first visit to the theater in 1990, I knew there was more going on there than just movies. Even the most skeptical of believers have had their minds changed once they have gone to the Strand. From gentle hair pulling to being tapped on the shoulder, the Strand has its own inhouse ghosts. Workers at the Strand have claimed to see a man hanging around the main movie screen dressed in clothing not from our time period. There is another ghost named Rodney who used to

aroma of her perfume appear for patrons and workers. I can say from my many visits to the Strand that I believe it to be quite haunted. My own personal experiences mirror the rumors about the theater. Every time I get comfortable in my seat, with a delicious container of popcorn in hand, I either receive a tug on my hair or a slight nudge on the back of my shirt. I have seen energies floating around the theater doing the same to other patrons. It is almost comical watching people jerk their
heads around to see who just pulled on their ponytail or seeing people shift around in their seat when I know they have just been touched by a spirit’s phantom hand. The Strand Theatre does NOT allow ghost hunts due to past teams who have come in and stirred up the spirits, causing all types of technical issues for the theater. Case Files Of The Unknown: Cryptids & Mythological Creatures
Crawfordsville Sky Monster: Flying Finned Cryptid By Jill Stefko, Ph.D., Suite 101 Contributing Writer
n inexplicable eel-like creature that flew over Indiana in the 1800s, terrifying the villagers, was dubbed the Crawfordsville Sky Monster. It all started in September 1891 when people in the area first saw the bizarre entity flying in the sky over Crawfordsville, Indiana. The Indianapolis Journal published news about the first sightings on September 5th of that year. The sky monster appeared to have fins that it used to navigate. It emitted agonizing sounds and writhed. The next night, the creature returned and frightened the townsfolk. What could it have been? Crawfordsville Sky Monster: First Sightings Ice deliverymen Marshall McIntyre and Bill Gray were working on a wagon at 2 a.m. on the 4th when they saw the mysterious eel-like creature flying about 100 feet above the ground. It appeared to be 20 feet long, eight feet wide, flew with several pairs of fins, and circled a house before disappearing in the east. When it returned, the men fled in terror. Another witness, First Methodist Church minister Reverend G. W. Switzer, went outside to get some water from a well and saw the monster. He woke his wife so she could see it. It slid down onto the lawn at Lane Place before it re-ascended and continued its meandering route above the town. When the residents heard about the sighting, many ridiculed the witnesses. Some suggested they saw a drunken hallucination — until it appeared the next evening. Crawfordsville Sky Monster Returns The cryptid returned the next evening. Hundreds of people witnessed its antics. They described it as a creature with viciously flailing fins and a blazing red eye as it flew
The Crawfordsville Sky Monster was first seen in September 1891 in the skies over Crawfordsville, Indiana.
300 feet above them. It squirmed as if it was in tremendous pain and emitted melancholic wheezing cries. Once, it lunged down at a group of observers who claimed they felt its hot breath. Sharp weapons didn’t harm the monster. After its second appearance, the Crawfordsville Sky Monster vanished, and it has not been seen since. Crawfordsville Sky Monster: News Item The article, written by the Cedar Rapids Iowa Evening Gazette’s editor, was published on September 11, 1891. The case reminded the editor of a similar incident in Chicago, Illinois, during spring 1849 when he was a young boy. The creature was initially sighted between 9 and 10 p.m. People were flabbergasted and horrified by
the eerie supernatural sight and the noises it emitted as it flew above Lake Michigan. The sighting of the monster terrified him then. Some people described it as a glowing gargantuan coffin with a demonic face and head. Flames spewed out from its eyes and mouth. Eerie screeches emanated from its twisted lips. Some nervous women fainted, while others had hysterical fits. Allegedly, a priest conducted an unsuccessful rite of exorcism. The Millerites, a religious cult, were joyous about the Crawfordsville sighting and accepted another aerial monster their leader claimed he saw as proof positive that the end of the world was near. They were disciples of William Miller, a New York farmer, who claimed to have discovered when Jesus would return to Earth again when he saw the monster. The mystery was solved. It was a hoax. Some young men had constructed a large kite that resembled a coffin and covered it with phosphorous. The demonic face was a pumpkin Jack-o’-Lantern and the “music” was provided by an unfortunate kitten that was tied to the kite’s tail. Crawfordsville Sky Monster: Aerial Kin Flying cryptids and anomalies have been sighted nearly globally and differ in appearances. Some have scales and resemble prehistoric flying reptiles, while others are feathered. There is one that resembles a winged man. The Kongamato, a flying prehistoric-looking reptilian cryptid, has been sighted in Zambia, Kenya, and Namibia by natives and Westerners, including prominent cryptozoologist Ivan Sanderson. When Africans are shown a picture of a pterodactyl, they agree that the cryptid resembles it. Mothman, a winged anomaly from West Virginia, looks like a winged man, about six feet tall with huge eyes. It’s said that the creature can fly at a speed of 100 mph. The mysterious cryptid Texas big bird was sighted in the Rio Grande Valley during the 1970s. Most witnesses described this cryptid as being about five feet tall, featherless, and having a long beak, bat-like wings, and a simian face. Crawfordsville Sky Monster: Theories Allegedly, John Hornbeck and Abe Hernley followed the creature and claimed they discovered it to be a flock of hundreds of killdeer, members of the hawk family. The birds’ wings, white under-feather, and melancholic cries contributed to the belief of many eyewitnesses that they came from another world. Charles Hoy Fort, the father of modern paranormalism, investigated the sightings after he read about the in-
cidents in the September 10, 1891, issue of the Brooklyn Eagle. He was convinced that the Reverend Switzer didn’t exist, but decided to investigate. Fort was amazed when he discovered the man did exist, and he then corresponded with him. One source maintains that Switzer confirmed the monster sightings while another states Fort never received the information. Vincent Hayes Gaddis, American author, journalist, and member of the Fortean Society, was living in Crawfordsville and interviewed people about the monster. He concluded that the creature was a living entity, not a UFO. What was the Crawfordsville Sky Monster? There’s no doubt that the creature existed and frightened the villagers. It wasn’t a besotted hallucination as some claimed. It wasn’t an apparition, mirage, mass delusion, or a hoax. There have been other sightings of similar creatures. Modern cryptologists categorize them as a flying cryptids, dragons, serpents, or atmospheric creatures.

Was the 1947 Roswell UFO a Russian Spy Plane? By Jill Stefko, Ph.D., Suite 101 Contributing Writer
uthor Annie Jacobsen alleges that the Roswell UFO was a USSR jet plane with a crew of deformed children intended to create mass hysteria in the U.S. The book, titled Area 51, is said to be based upon interviews with scientists and engineers who worked in the facility. The sources suggested that Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin asked Nazi doctor Josef Mengele to create “grotesque, child-size aviators” to be remotely controlled, land in the U.S., and cause hysteria — such as the chaos that was created by Orson Welles’ 1938 radio Halloween “treat,” a simulated news broadcast, “War of the Worlds” without commercials. The show, about a Martian invasion, caused widespread panic for people who missed the disclaimer.
the Roswell UFO a Soviet Spy Plane? According to Jacobsen’s book, the conspiracy started after the USSR seized the jet-propelled, single-winged Horton Ho 229, a fighter plane, said to be the prototype of the B2 stealth bomber, from Germany at the end of the war. Angel of Death Mengele had experience in brutal experiments involving children in Auschwitz, WWII’s notorious concentration camp. He agreed to create the bizarre child-size aviators in return for a eugenics laboratory. Negative eugenics is studying the possibility of improving the qualities of Earth’s population, primarily by discouraging people who have genetic defects or inheritable undesirable traits from reproducing. Positive eugen-
1947 Roswell UFO Incident The 1947 Roswell incident was withheld from the public by the U.S. government and military. Jacobsen wrote that the bodies found at the crash site were hideous, misshapen children, about 12 years old, under five feet tall, with huge heads and abnormally shaped large eyes. Decades later, two Air Force officers involved in the Roswell UFO incident released secret information about the event. On the evening of July 8, 1947, Mack Brazel and others heard a loud explosion near his farm close to Roswell, New Mexico. The next morning, Brazel found wreckage of what seemed to be a UFO. The Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) base sent two military intelligence officers to investigate. In 1978, Major Jesse Marcel, one of the military officers who conducted the initial investigation, contacted Ufologist Stanton Friedman to inform him about the incident. Lieutenant Walter Haut, then RAAF public information officer, wrote a notarized affidavit in December 2002 and authorized it for release after his death. After he died, the document was published. He wrote that in the heavily secured Building 84, he saw the debris and bodies that appeared to be children with unusually large heads. Was
ics encourages reproduction for those who have inheritable desirable traits. One of Jacobsen’s sources was, allegedly, an anonymous, retired engineer from the former defense company EG&G, which handled the U.S. government’s top-secret projects. He claimed he was involved with the Roswell operation in Area 51 in 1978. The man claimed workers found bodies, similar to each other, by the crashed UFO. Two were, purportedly, “comatose but still alive.”
CIA Agent Speaks about Roswell UFO Chase Brandon, a 30-year agency veteran, said, “It was not a damn weather balloon,” referring to the official military statement about the object to counter Haut’s first press release that said “flying saucer” debris was found in the Roswell area. Brandon said that it was an aircraft that wasn’t from Earth. Using the words “remains” and “cadavers” was precisely what people were discussing. He claimed he saw photos and documents in a special section of CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, the Historical Intelligence Collection, that irrefutably proved to him that the crash was that of an alien spacecraft, although he refused to explain what it was. Hard evidence was extremely difficult to obtain, because many of the official documents were edited or revised. Respected Nuclear Physicist and Ufologist Researches Roswell UFO Stanton Friedman has investigated UFOs for over 50 years, searching for scientific proof of their existence. He worked on highly classified projects involving fusion, fission rockets, and nuclear aircraft for state-of-the-art technological companies. In 1958, he became interested in UFOs and began doing research. In 1967, Friedman began giving lectures about extraterrestrial spacecraft, dubbing the coverups a “cosmic Watergate.” Thirty years after the Roswell incident, Friedman met with key military personnel who were involved in the inves-
tigation. He learned about the debris and bodies that were recovered. He’s convinced the event was covered up. Was the Roswell UFO a Soviet Spy Plane? In 1947, the U.S. and the USSR were engaged in the Cold War. Both governments and their militaries hid projects from the public, so it’s possible there was a secret Russian aircraft. The Soviets launched their first satellite, Sputnik 1, on October 4, 1957, so it seems improbable that they had an advanced remote-controlled spy plane in 1947, carrying a crew of eugenically engineered children.

AN IRREPLACEABLE LOSS The Life and Death of a Poltergeist Agent: Part 3
By Dr. Barry Taff, http://barrytaff.net/ For Part 1 of this article, see our June 2013 issue. For Part 2, see our July 2013 issue.
ust as summer of 2002 is about to begin, so does another surge in the poltergeist activity around Lisa. At 3 p.m. on June 11, Barry and Lisa are hugging in the garage when the house’s back door that opens into the garage violently slams shut without any wind. The force of the door slamming shakes the garage area. A month and a day later, on July 12 at approximately 10 a.m., an autographed photo of Tippie Hedren, with a heavy frame on the display table in the dining room flies several feet (6-8 ft.) across the room, landing near the stone fireplace. Barry and Lisa return the photo to its rightful position, and it again finds its way (unseen) to the same area of dining room. Paranormal Activity Reaches New Levels Over the next few weeks Lisa again hears what she believes is Barry calling to her only to run downstairs and discover that he wasn’t even home. These events are followed shortly by several incidents where Lisa is looking through their large, walk-in closet off the master bedroom upstairs, when there are loud poundings and knockings right in front of her. She panics and runs downstairs to get away from that part of the house. Ten days later, on August 7 at 5 p.m., the phenomena ascended to a new level in its communicative endeavor. Lisa was upstairs in the office running off copies of California’s Most Haunted for Barry when suddenly the computer that was open to MS Word at the time, starts generating its own text in the middle of the screen. The letters “cu” and “et” mysteriously appear on their own without any input from Lisa at the keyboard. Lisa panics
and runs downstairs. Unfortunately, Barry wasn’t home to console her. Later that day, after Lisa had stayed out of the house for hours, she returned emotionally exhausted. Summoning all her courage and bravery, she managed to go back upstairs and take a shower. As she was about to learn, this would turn out to be a very bad decision on her part. While showering, the power in the house suddenly failed, requiring Lisa to find her way downstairs dripping wet and naked to the breakers to reset them. There have been occasional power failures in that region of Glendale, but this event only affected Barry’s house. The power
came back on several hours later before Barry came home. Lisa was emotionally crumbling at this point. Four days later, on August 11 at 3 a.m., Barry could not fall asleep so he decided to get some unfinished work done in his office. While at the computer, he clearly heard the sound of heavy footsteps coming up the staircase and approaching the office door. He strongly felt the sensation of being watched and turned around, expecting to see Lisa or someone at the room’s entrance. There was no one there, and Lisa was sound asleep at the time. Two and-a-half weeks later, at 9:15 p.m., Lisa was upstairs in the bathroom when she heard heavy footsteps coming up the stairs and approaching the bathroom. She panicked and started screaming. Again, Barry was out on a shoot. It’s now September 3, very late at night. Barry was upstairs working in the office when he heard the sounds of someone or something running around the house and garage making a great deal of noise. His investigation found nothing to account for the sounds. Earlier that day, Barry recalled an incident when he was positive that he heard Lisa calling to him, only later to realize that she was not even home at the time.

Barry and Lisa looked at each other trying to understand what they had just seen. At the time, seeing such an obscure apparitional image had absolutely no meaning to anyone, including this author. In fact, I do not recall any instance similar to this ever being reported in research literature. The significance of seeing a large letter “M” would not become relevant for almost 20 more months. Later that same evening at 11:30 p.m., Lisa was upstairs getting ready for bed. Barry was still downstairs watching TV when he heard what sounded like shattering glass from the kitchen. Searching the kitchen and dining room revealed nothing. This sound was very similar to what was heard up in the bedroom many months earlier and could be the crackling or snapping of high-voltage electrostatic discharge. The next morning at 9 a.m. Barry was preparing to shave and shower and was unable to find his razor. It never reappeared, and he had to purchase a new one. On May 31 at approximately 9:30 a.m., the downstairs hallway cabinet door violently swung open with enough force to shake the entire house. Lisa and Barry were watching the news on TV. Lisa became terrified, and it took Barry hours to calm her down. Paranormal Fireworks Continue to Occur Two blessed months of silence again lulled Lisa and Barry into another false sense of security. Their peace of mind was forcefully interrupted on July 28 at around 11 p.m. when they were both up in the office. Lisa felt a “warm hand” touch her right ribcage area, which caused her to jump and start screaming. There was another six-month interval when there was very little, if any, activity to report, most of it being sparse reoccurrences of banging and knockings or Lisa and Barry thinking they heard each other calling the other. Not until January 24 of 2004 did anything dramatic happen again. At 5:40 p.m. Barry, as usual, was on his
way home from a shoot. At home, Lisa put a chicken into the oven within a Pyrex pan. After less than five minutes, there was a loud explosion in the oven. The oven door blew open, and shards of the Pyrex glass pan were propelled out of the oven barely missing Lisa. Fortunately, she was on the other side of the kitchen nowhere near the front of the oven. Oddly, given the fierce nature of the explosion, the chicken itself was untouched. It was as if the glass was blown out laterally away from the chicken. However, there was no way Lisa was going to attempt to once again roast that chicken after witnessing this event. This was now the second incident of this specific type, as the first one occurred on December 17, 2001. Maybe the poltergeist “chickened out,” if you’ll excuse the pun, but things dramatically “simmered” down for the next three months until April 24. At 7:55 p.m. Buster the dog awoke from his slumber in the downstairs bedroom, walked out, stared intensely, and then begins barking at the steps leading upstairs. Barry came over to see what was going on, as Buster was normally a very calm dog. He looked up and saw nothing unusual. Cautiously going upstairs, Barry saw a bright blue flash of light without any apparent source. As he turned around, he noticed that a framed photo from the bookshelf was lying on the floor. He placed it back onto the shelf and walked away. Only moments later he again found it on the floor, several feet away from the shelf. Fearing for Lisa’s sanity, Barry didn’t tell her about this event. Another 38 days pass, and everything has once again turned calm. But on June 2 the calm is broken at 11:50 p.m. while Lisa and Barry were up in the bedroom watching TV. Something unseen slammed into the door of the cabinet holding the TV, producing a loud crack and startling them. Once again, Lisa was in a state of heightened anxiety. Demonology — The Dark Files
Jinns vs. Demons & Their Effects on Atheists & Other Cultures By Bishop Jerry Williams, Eastside Paranormal Society & Demonologist
lot of people ask me if the jinn is a demon. First off, the jinn is a spirit in the Islamic culture. It’s believed that this spirit can be used for good and bad. My opinion is that the jinn is a form of the demonic and shouldn’t be used for good, because this entity can attach to that person and possess them. The jinn also is seen in the Jewish religion where the Rabbi, along with a group of 10 men called the “Minyan,” will exorcise the demon from the possessed. The Minion will recite “Psalms 91” three times until the demon or jinn is released. The Rabbi will blow a ram’s horn, known as a Shofar, until the spirit is released. The group will ask the demon or jinn questions about why they possessed the person before freeing the victim. The Islamic culture will have their minister say verses from the Koran and then use poison root extract and eliminate the jinn. They may ask the jinn to help them. In any circumstances, it’s the Christian belief that these are fallen angels that assist Satan, and they are not a spirit and were never human. The jinn cannot be trusted. Now I ask you what do you believe? One way or another I respect other cultures and their beliefs. If I have to fight the demonic, I must use both my own belief, but also use theirs. The jinn, in my opinion, is a very bad entity. But I ask you to research the subject and decide on your own. Atheists and Possession People often ask me if a person who does not believe in God can become possessed. The answer is yes. A person, no matter whom they are or what religion or culture they are from, can knowingly or unknowingly invite a demon into their lives. In fact, we have found that bad spirits who were once human and lived on this earth can possess or infest an atheist’s home. The bad spirit may act tough or

even try to say it’s a demon, but really what it wants is to cause chaos in their life. We must always be on our guard because demons and/ or bad spirits do not look at color, creed, sex, or culture. They look for the invitation. This is why it can be difficult to eliminate the demonic. It also works on that person’s faith and the faith of the minister or demonologist. Please keep that in mind when it comes to the dark side of the spiritual realm. Thank you all for reading. If you have a topic you want me to cover, e-mail me at jerrywilliamslive@gmail. com. Inside the Psychic Mind
Inter-Life Relationships By William Becker, Paranormal Insights
he past- and between-life work I’ve been doing with someone has come up with some interesting concepts. I have the person’s permission to talk about the ideas and what we’ve come up with on the condition of maintaining anonymity. I’ll use a masculine gender form simply for ease. The person’s actual gender I won’t identify for privacy’s sake. The subject of the readings has come to identify a being who visits him regularly and is his soul mate. The two have been romantically involved during multiple lives. When together in the same physical plane, they form a deep and intertwined oneness that is rare to find and beautiful to see. At this time, his soul mate comes to visit from another realm. He seems to be between lives at this point in time. When together sharing a life, my subject and his soul mate have a love bond that permeates every aspect of their beings. The love manifests in many ways beyond description, but includes total understanding and acceptance of each other. There is a gentleness of existence together that they carry over into other aspects of their lives. There is no bitterness, jealousy, hurt, anger ... just a beautiful pure state that is mutually supportive and freeing as it also creates an amazing unity. We have been looking at this connection to see if it has influenced his romantic relationships in this life. This person has dated quite a bit in his present incarnation, but has had little success in finding someone with whom to form a long-term relationship. And, he isn’t clear that the possibility actually exists for him. He hasn’t met anyone who he feels that deep, soul connection with. And, he has rarely seen a relationship he’s known well that has the dynamics and substance he wants in one. One of the variables that may make a difference in this case is that the subject has a guide in one area that seems to also be that soul mate. Has that psychic connection with a soul mate guide in another realm further
influenced his ability to settle for something that isn’t as fulfilling as he once had? We think it might. Just how do the past lives with the soul mate influence the current life without one? Although we think it varies for different people, for some at least it seems that subconsciously they aren’t willing to settle for less than they had before. They may not have a conscious memory of those other lives, but the soul memory seems to continue and bring a sense of dissatisfaction for anything less. This is not necessarily a negative. The person I’ve been working with has a sense of relief knowing that the reason he hasn’t found true love in this life might have more to do with having had such perfect love in the past, that anything less just isn’t attractive. This knowledge has helped him to realize that the issue is not so much him, as it is he was simply born into a life that he doesn’t share with the love of his being.
Within the pages of “The Harvey Boat,” Spiritual Medium Robyne Marie tells the story given to her from “behind the veil,” after connecting with a spirit who passed away on 9/11. The spirit asked for his powerful, touching, and heartfelt message to be shared with “the children,” so Robyne Marie set out to make this request a reality.

The Hotel Chelsea By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
ome places are just born bad. You know, the kind of place that has a black cloud hanging ominously over it and seems to be destined for bad things. The Hotel Chelsea in New York City is one of those places. It is a place where legends live and legends tragically die, leaving their spirits to linger for all time. From the very beginning, the Hotel Chelsea knew nothing but heartache. Built in 1883, the Chelsea was built for the rich as a place to stay after enjoying a night out in New York’s theater district. Not too long after the Chelsea opened its doors, the theater district moved, leaving the hotel in financial ruin. The hotel’s owners claimed bankruptcy, and the hotel seemed to close its doors. Sid and Nancy Make the Chelsea Famous Throughout the 20th Century, the Chelsea changed hands numerous times, but financial ruin was never too far behind. Owner after owner claimed bankruptcy. It was almost as if the hotel was just not supposed to be. And we will see why in a bit. The neighborhood where the Chelsea stood was popular with mid-20th Century Bohemian Society, and the Chelsea was at the center of it all. The hotel seemed to attract writers, such as poet Dylan Thomas and Mark Twain. Rock stars such as Janis Joplin, Alice Cooper, and Jimi Hendrix called the Chelsea home. And the most tragic of them all was Sex Pistols bass player Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, “nauseating” Nancy Spungen. Sid and Nancy were quite the pair. Nancy was well known for verbally abusing Sid, and it didn’t matter where they were. It was reported that Nancy, at any given time, would open up a verbal can of whoopass on the punk rocker. Sid would apparently take it because, well, they loved the drugs and the drugs loved them. Maybe that’s why one day Sid snapped and, allegedly, murdered his girlfriend.
Now closed, Hotel Chelsea in New York is said to house the spirits of poets, rock stars, and other tragic historical figures.
On a cold October morning in 1978, Nancy was found dead in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor of room 100. She had suffered numerous stab wounds, and the only person who was present was Sid, passed out after taking a strong hit of heroin, the couples’ drug of choice. Sid, although he had no memory of stabbing his
charming girlfriend to death, was taken into custody by NYPD and charged with murder. Somehow, some way, Sid was able to make bail and was released until he was to stand trial. That trial never came. A few days after he was released, the drug that Sid and Nancy loved so much decided to show its hate. Sid Vicious died alone from a massive heroine overdose. Since that time guests and staff at the Chelsea have reported hearing the sound of a violent fight coming from room 100, the room where Nancy died. Upon investigation of the fight, nothing and no one is found. Many believe that this was the final argument that resulted in Sid killing Nancy. Others have reported seeing a tall, lanky shadow lurking around room 100. This shadow is believed to be the apparition of Sid Vicious still hanging around the room where he killed his lady love with a switchblade to the gut.
the hip bohemian scene. Shortly after arriving, Thomas became ill. Some say that he had severe medical problems that eventually killed him. However, those that knew the poet reported that Thomas had a severe drinking problem and died in room 206 of acute alcohol poisoning. Those that stay in room 206 have reported the sensation of being watched. Others have claimed to see the sad apparition of the famed poet. All who have stayed in the room have claimed to hear the keys of a typewriter plucking away. Dylan Thomas may still be writing on the other side. Janis Joplin, a frequent guest at the Chelsea was once quoted as saying, “A lot of funky things happen at the Chelsea.” Joplin is right. If you are looking to experience that last vestige of the old New York Bohemian lifestyle, the Chelsea is for you. If you’re looking for the hotel in New York City where legends have gone to live, die, and haunt, then you have come to the right place, Hotel Chelsea. The hotel is now closed, but plays host to many film and video productions. The hotel is located at 222 W. 23rd Street in New York.
This shadow is believed to be the apparition of Sid Vicious.

Crystals & Herbology: Mystical Etchings From A Medicyn Woman’s Grimoire
The ABC’s of Herbs and Kitchen Witchery By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com
t’s amusing that most people think kitchen witchery is hanging a witch doll meant to ward off evil in the kitchen, but this is not so. It can be part of the ambiance in a witch’s kitchen, but it is not what makes the witchery. It is a natural form of witchcraft used in cooking and growing herbs. In kitchen witchcraft you use the symbolic meanings of herbs and all the elements of cooking to build the power of the food for a certain type of reason. Kitchen witchery is not practiced as much in the Western world as it is in cultures with rich ties to food like China, Asia, and India. It does not matter what type of cuisine you want to cook; it is how you cook the food that makes the magic. Kitchen Witchery: Creating Tasty Food Filled With Emotion This craft can be self-taught or passed down the family lines. Its core belief is to honor everyday mundane tasks and bring magic to life for each person that eats the food you prepare. This is a long-practiced craft mainly started by women, since they were the ones left home to tend the fires. Kitchen witchery is often practiced on a more solitary level; these practitioners may be called hedge, garden, or green witches, just to name a few. When searching for tools to use in kitchen witchery, you will find utensils that have been blessed with scared symbols carved in them. Kitchen alters can be found in the window sill or on a special shelf paying homage to nature and the deities that usually guard and care for the home hearth. Herbs are often grown in the kitchen and found hanging around or placed in display jars for use. I am a Hoodoo kitchen witch by nature, cooking since I was in my young teens. I saw how food could change the moods of people in one bite. That is what happens when you add a bit of intention and willpower to each action
while creating the dish. By using your own personal power, you can create tasty food filled with emotion. When we cook up an earthy broth from fresh vegetables, chopped with the greatest of belief that this broth will make someone feel good, it somehow works. Each and every edible piece has a purpose or a way of healing. For instance, a melon like Honeydew or Crenshaw is known to assist in moon spells that break bad habits and addictive patterns. Gypsies have used them to invoke love and a lusty feeling, offering the thought that love can be carefree. Just think of taking a bite out of a sweet and juicy slice of melon. How does it make you feel? When you add the thoughts and personal energies to the process of preparation, it only magnifies it.

Magic & Lore
The LEYAK By Mari Wells, www.mariwells.wordpress.com
hat does a tiger, a bald giant, a ball of light, a monkey with gold teeth, a giant rat, a riderless motorcycle, and a bird as big as a horse all have in common? They’re all forms that the shapeshifting Vampire Witch from Bali uses. The Leyak is very dangerous in any form she may take. During the day, she looks and acts just like everyone else. At night, she searches through cemeteries in hopes of finding human remains fresh enough to salvage. Using Black Magic, she makes a magical formula with them. If she can’t find any suitable entrails, she’ll get what she needs from a sleeping person. Her magical potion lets her shape-shift and rip her head off, flying around bodiless with her intestines, heart, and liver hanging behind her while searching for prey. Adding to the gruesome image of dangling innards, she has a very long pointed tongue and very sharp fangs. She drinks blood from humans and animals, but loves the blood of women who have just given birth and their newborns. You can find her wondering back roads, crossroads, cemeteries, forests, ravines, and seashores. If you hear a dog whimper on moonless nights, it means she’s close by. She can also make crops fail and cause famines and epidemics. She capable of possessing people; the possessed person is called a Pengeleyakan. Leaving gourmet food on your doorstep will usually please her. As Balinese lore has it, a Leyak can only use her magic on the Island of Bali, so if you can get her to a surrounding island like Java, she’d be impotent. There is a very elaborate ceremony called Mecaru that will bring her back to harmony with humans and nature. It does, however, require a blood sacrifice. There are three stages of the Mecaru ceremony. The first and lowest can be performed by the head of the household. He will give offerings of flowers, raw meat, shrimp paste, ginger, and onion. He acknowledges, and honors the spirits who then won’t have any need to harm humans. If the household is so inclined, alcoholic drinks made with rice may also be given. A Pinandita, the low-ranking holy man, can perform the middle-level ceremony. He offers black, red, white, and yellow rice seeds. In addition, a blood sacrifice from

chickens or ducks is poured on the ground. The strangest part of this blood offering is the importance of the color of blood, not the number of animals. The Pinandita will decide how dark the blood offering needs to be. The highest-ranking holy person, a Pedanda, is the only one who can perform the highest level of the ceremony. Hundreds of animals are sacrificed, like buffaloes, cows, pigs, and puppies. Color is again of the most importance, and only animals deemed worthy can be sacrificed because they are insured a higher place in their next reincarnation. In Pura Dalem Penataram Ped, Bali, there’s a temple dedicated to Ratu Gede Mecaling or Ratu Gede Nusa, the patron saint of all Leyak Witches. Locals go to the temple when they feel that Black Magic is the force behind misfortune or sicknesses.

The Mermaid Conspiracy By Katie Christopher, NEPA Paranormal’s Ghost Detectives
The purpose of this article is to educate readers on the facts behind some of the most popular and controversial paranormal conspiracy theories. There are many things out there being hidden and covered up. But we have a right to know the truth. Each month I will cover a different conspiracy theory — some well known and some a bit more obscure. You will be given details and theories about each topic, and in the end, it is for you to decide what you believe. Please e-mail me at KatiesConspiracyCorner@yahoo. com with any questions or topic suggestions.
hen I picture a mermaid, the first image that comes to mind is flowing red hair, purple seashells, and a beautiful voice. I picture her collecting trinkets and spending time with her best fish friend. Disney sure has given me a biased view on the subject, but bottom line ... I know it’s fictional. Obviously, a part fish girl with hopes and dreams of living in the real world outside the ocean does not exist, but it is a staple from my childhood. Since becoming an adult, I never even questioned the existence of such a thing, knowing it is entirely too farfetched to even consider. However, I recently watched a series of documentaries that made me wonder if something of this nature could exist. Intrigued, I quickly saw that the potentially real Little Mermaid is a much more grotesque version of what I pictured. The investigator in me immediately saw something worth looking into. This month’s article will cover the history, as well as some real-life claims, of the existence of mermaids and provide some key facts that could either prove or disprove such an existence. Mermaid Lore A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the body of a female and the tail of a fish, according to popular lore. Historically, it is documented that Christopher Columbus
reported seeing mermaids during his explorations. The first stories of mermaids date back to ancient times. In an Assyrian story, the goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of guilt for killing her human lover by accident. In Greek mythology, mermaids have been associated with sirens, which were beautiful creatures who lured sailors to crash their ships using their voices and melodic magical music. Fifteenth Century Chinese literature speaks of a woman of the sea who wept tears that became pearls. The original tale of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson was published in 1837. Interestingly,
After watching both documentaries, I have to admit, I was pretty shocked. I certainly didn’t expect to see any facts in there to sway me to believe that mermaids could actually be real, and now I was actually entertaining the possibility. At that moment, I did what I always do when I see a compelling documentary; I took to Google for more information. As I searched for updates and additional info on the show, I noticed it was getting a lot of negative feedback, which surprised me because I thought it was really good. And then I saw it … the programs were fake! Cielo Drive Convergence: The Ultimate Field Laboratory? By Dr. Barry Taff, http://barrytaff.net/
y now, everyone’s probably heard of the incredible haunting on Cielo Drive at Benedict Canyon within Beverly Hills. This case was inspired by, and may be the natural fallout from, the heinous Sharon Tate murders back in August of 1969. There are real scientific reasons that this location is plagued by such recurring paranormal events, and it’s far more complicated than Charles Manson’s cult slaughtering five people at this location on a hot August night more than four decades ago. These recurring events are the result of a confluence of several key factors and variables acting in concert to generate such incredible and durable paranormal activity. House at the End of the Drive After investigating more than 4,500 locations over the course of more than four decades, few cases required the numerous visits that this one did. There are times in all of our lives when everything appears to come together in just the right place at just the right time for just the right reason(s). One might refer to such a situation as a synchronicity or a convergence, where everything directly leads one down a certain path for an, as yet, undetermined purpose. Such extraordinary experiences often involve love, work, or an incredible happenstance of good and unfortunately, occasionally, bad fortune. In most situations, it is difficult, if not impossible, to unravel the true nature behind the various elements coalescing in just the right way to produce the extraordinary outcome. In scientific parapsychological research, such events are so incredibly rare that there isn’t even nomenclature to describe such an occurrence, possibly because such an event has never, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, occurred, or at least been published. Until now, that is. In July 2005, I believe that just such a convergence

took place in my very own backyard, so to speak. It appeared that fate had brought me into an investigation that ranks as the benchmark or high water mark of my four-decade career, dwarfing The Entity, Hollymont, and even San Pedro cases. Seemingly, everything was present in the same place, minutes from where I live, at the same time. However, I was about to discover that not all things that come in a beribboned box are as benign as they first appear. This particular investigation is the reason why some of us have chosen to dedicate our entire adult lives to studying various aspects of the paranormal, hoping that just the right collection of variables come together when one is present and able to document them. And, of course, the end result is hopefully a major step forward in knowledge, perhaps even a breakthrough, that provides answers to some very old questions plaguing the human condition, like where do we come from and what happens to us after we die? However, this story really begins when I received a
call from an old friend named Steve Rubin, a producer and publicist I met during the production of The Entity (Fox, 1983) motion picture in 1981. As it turns out, Steve and I casually met when we were kids during Saturday matinees at a local theater (The Stadium, at Pico and Livonia) where we regularly saw two sci-fi and/or horror movies for 25 cents and where a big bag of popcorn and a coke were just a dime each. I know, depressing isn’t it? Over the ensuing decades, Steve and I kept bumping into each other at screenings, parties, and through other projects and acquaintances within the entertainment industry. The second-to-last time I saw Steve was at a screening of Roswell at the Director’s Guild of America theater in 1994, and again, when a friend, Laurie Jacobson, writer of the now classic book Hollywood Haunted, married a relative of Steve’s, Jon Provost, the child star (Timmy) of the 1950’s Lassie TV series. The reason Steve called me in the early summer of 2005 was to solicit my interest and involvement to investigate the real story behind the lowbudget feature film he had just been hired to promote. House at the End of the Drive was a supernatural thriller that was wrapping production. It was inspired by the alleged, ongoing paranormal experiences of producer and co-creator David Oman (pronounced omen, no pun intended), who recently moved into a new home that his father, a real estate developer and builder, constructed. The recently built house just happened to be a stone’s throw from the site of the infamous Sharon Tate murders of August 1969. David moved into the house in August 2002. According to Steve, encounters at the allegedly haunted hillside residence included hearing disembodied voices and footsteps, observing large orbs of colored lights, and witnessing the apparitions of several of the August 1969 murder victims. After having read the script for House at the End of the Drive to assure myself that the movie was not simply another slasher film, I agreed to visit Oman’s home on Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon, which is on the northern edge of Beverly Hills.
After the world was stunned by the incredible savagery, brutality, and ritualistic nature of the Tate murders, I often wondered as to whether or not the subsequent tenants of the original house on Cielo Drive, which was torn down in 1994, had experienced any type of paranormal fallout resulting from the vicious slaughter of five innocent souls. There had been rumors and scuttlebutt over the years, but nothing amounting to anything more than idle chatter, probably the result of too much drugs and alcohol. As I wound my way up through Benedict Canyon from Sunset Blvd., in the back of my mind I recalled reading years earlier that this particular canyon was plagued by an acute abundance of alleged hauntings. In fact, in one particular book, a map of this canyon depicts clusters of hauntings throughout the canyon’s entire length, as well as on many of its side streets winding further up into its brush-laden hills. It was in this region where TV’s first Superman, George Reeves, died from a gunshot wound to his head on June 16, 1959, and whose ghost, occasionally appearing in full Superman costume, may continue to walk the floors of his old Benedict Canyon residence. Interestingly, Reeves’ death was never really solved from a forensic standpoint. The police, medical examiner’s office, and media initially labeled it a suicide, but virtually all of the subsequent investigation by my long-time friend Jan Alan Henderson into Reeves’ untimely death suggests that something far more sinister occurred and was thoroughly covered up by the authorities (Speeding Bullet: The Life and Bizarre Death of George Reeves, 2007). Strangely, Reeve’s fingerprints were not even found on the gun. Nor was there any gunshot residue or powder burns discovered on his body, because it was sent directly to the funeral home rather than the coroner’s office, which, even in those days, was against policy on suicides. Even more intriguing is the fact that several fresh bullet holes were found in the bedroom floor next to Reeves’ lifeless body on the bed. I guess he missed his head with the first several rounds! Yeah, right? Before turning west, up onto Cielo Drive, I also remembered that there was an earthquake fault running directly beneath Benedict Canyon, one which has not moved in the recent geologic past. All of this seemingly irrelevant and abstract information would become very meaningful as the case evolved. As I approached David’s house, I half expected to meet a 42-year-old man way over the edge of reason and sanity
I turned beet red and passed out!
Memories of Heinous Crimes On my way up to the house on July 19 to meet my colleague Barry Conrad, memories of August 1969 flooded my mind, remembering the fear and panic that gripped Los Angeles following those heinous killings on that steamy summer night.

that was simply looking for a tawdry, although effective, way to promote his horror movie. If that were the case, my presence at this location would have been very short-lived. Living on the extreme southern edge of Beverly Hills myself, I arrived at the Oman house well before my colleague, who lived in Glendale. The upper portion of Cielo Drive where Oman lives is a private street that is severely eroded with numerous potholes, which my sports car’s stiff suspension did not appreciate. As there was no real parking to speak of on this narrow road, one must pull up tight against the opposing hillside well into the dirt and paint-scratching brush to avoid blocking what limited passing space exists. To say I was paranoid about leaving my car there was an understatement. Before exiting the car, my thoughts went in their usual direction before entering a potentially new haunting case at this stage of my career: “Thirty-seven years, 4,000plus cases, and far too many sleepless nights to remember. I really believed that I’d seen, heard, and felt it all. Jaded into complacency, I was sure that nothing could ever impress or astonish me again.” To put it simply, I was about to be proved wrong, dead wrong. I had no way of knowing just how utterly unique this Beverly Hills location was and that I was about to embark upon the strangest and most bizarre case of my multi-decade career, a case that might lend much-needed definition and clarity to this particular area of parapsychological research. I pulled my instrument case from the car’s trunk and rang David’s doorbell. David very much resembled a combination of a young, thin version of David Nelson (Ricky Nelson’s older brother) and one of the Beach Boys from the mid ’60s.
Bizarre and Unprecedented Activity Detected on Cielo Driver It was July 19, 2005, and Barry Conrad and Lisa McIntosh (Barry’s girlfriend at the time), who was in remission from Multiple Myeloma, a deadly form of bone cancer, accompanied me to this fascinating location in the hope of experiencing, documenting, and recording some hard, objective data. A stone’s throw away from the infamous house where the Sharon Tate murders occurred, maybe slightly more than 100 feet north, a new house was built in 2002 and was occupied by the son of the builder, David Oman. Not surprisingly, the construction crew, David, and several of his friends had experienced a wide range of paranormal phenomena, including apparitions, psychokinetic displays, and disembodied voices in this awesome building up against the hillside. However, we had absolutely no way of knowing upon our arrival just how utterly unique this specific property would turn out to be in the most unexpected ways. My instruments (Geomagnetometer, Natural TriField Meter, Air Ion Counter, etc.) indicated bizarre and totally unprecedented magnetic field amplitudes and polarities throughout the entire house combined with an ambient electromagnetic background anywhere from 20-100 times normal. This house was a compass needle’s worst nightmare. In fact, there were several locations in David’s home where compass needles would spin wildly as if near a quadrapole, which does not occur in nature. And on other occasions almost everything in the house seemed to be emitting a very strong magnetic field, including glass, wood, plastic, and leather — none of which are ferromagnetic or paramagnetic. After this first visit, Barry, Lisa, and I came away from this house feeling physically ill. In fact, while in the Oman’s house at the bottom of the stairwell, I turned beet red and passed out exactly where the localized geomagnetic field (GMF) measured out at 1,700 milligauss [mG], when 300-500 mG is normal. Fortunately, Steve Rubin saw what was happening and caught me before I hit the floor. Fortunately, Steve’s much bigger than I am, so there wasn’t a problem. All I remember from the incident was feeling very warm, nauseous, and dizzy like I had a fever with the flu, and then nothing other than waking up on the floor surrounded by various people. At one point when Lisa came upstairs to get more batteries, she observed that the top flap of the large, ballistic nylon bag for Conrad’s video camera was literally flapping in the air as if being propelled by a strong wind, of which there was none. She let out a moderate yell, and we all came running upstairs. But by the time we arrived,

making a full-scale magnetic deflection and then going back to normal. We were both amazed. What made this event particularly interesting was that this reporter had just asked me if I ever felt sick while in this house. Before I could even answer, the nausea and instrument reaction occurred. I guess that event answered his question? Over the course of the one year I investigated this case, there were many very interesting individuals visiting David’s extraordinary home — some really normal and some so weird that they almost made me look normal. One woman who claimed to be a medium (more like half-baked or rare to me) made a blatant declaration that the house was evil. When I asked her why the house was evil, she replied that the numerous demonic entities present in the house were making her ill. She was totally unaware of the extremely potent geomagnetic field at this location that makes some people feel really sick. When I tried explaining this to her, she couldn’t or wouldn’t even try to understand what I was saying. What I should have told her was that if the house had given her an orgasm instead of making her sick, she’d probably think it was healing her. I wonder if she would have understood that? On numerous occasions, photographs taken by different people at different times clearly showed luminous anomalies while none were visible to the naked eye. In fact, on the first night we were there and walking up the private road toward where the original Tate house once stood, I felt like someone’s hand was touching my left shoulder.
At the same moment, Brent had taken a photo of me as I walked in front of him. The photo depicted several multicolored balls of light around me right when I felt the disembodied hand on my shoulder. What a coincidence. On another occasion during the late fall of 2005, there was an approaching thunderstorm. As the storm reached the hill and house, the electrical field in most of the house jumped to around two kilovolts (2,000) per meter, and my skin started feeling like it was burning. I immediately packed my equipment and left the house. One other evening there were very strong Santa Ana winds blowing with their concomitant positive ions that can severely irritate some people’s bodies and moods. While measuring these ionic winds at a very high level, something really astounding occurred. The instant these positively charged winds entered David’s home, their polarity reversed to where they became negatively charged. This strongly suggests that David’s house imparted a rather hefty electromagnetic charge to the incoming air. The incoming air had electrons added to it, thereby becoming negatively charged, while the outside air remained positively charged. Absolutely amazing. The source was the localized geophysical battery upon the hill that David’s house sits. On yet another visit, a plastic glass filled with water was thrown at me from the kitchen, even though no one was even near that room other than myself. On another occasion, we were on the third floor, the lowest one, and in the unfinished, dirt wall room. Paul and I were taking measurements when something that clearly felt like a human hand touched my left shoulder. I immediately turned to my left expecting to see Paul there, only to discover that he was at the other end of the room, maybe 10 feet away from me. While all this was transpiring, I obtained readings of well over 1,000 milligauss in that most unusual room, as well as constantly changing polarity and compass needles that were spinning like a top. While on the stairwell, disembodied voices could be heard, but not always recordable. At times, it sounded like someone loudly snoring or with severe asthma. At other times, it was like very muffled conversations were occurring. If I stood on the stairway too long, I became dizzy and nauseous. My Last Visits to Cielo Drive On June 10, 2006, my second to last visit to this incredible location, I apparently once again passed out while approaching the third-floor, earthen wall room. Paul, who was right behind me, watched as I started stumbling and then collapsed onto the wall before entering that odd room. I suddenly awoke on the floor and had no

Personal Experiences: Tales From The Haunted Heathman Hotel
Haunted Activity Occurs in Hotel Restaurant By Rob St.Helen, West Coast Ghost Hunters
hope everyone is having a wonderful summertime, staying safe on your investigations around the world! It’s been pretty quiet at the Heathman as of late; the hotel itself has been sold out for many nights of the week, which makes me wonder if the spirits are just tired of the constant people flow in and out. We have 150 rooms, plus a top-three restaurant in the city, McCormick & Schmick’s (see photo), so many people come into the hotel/restaurant every single day and enjoy what we have to offer. The restaurant, like the hotel, has its fair share of paranormal activity, including shadow people and poltergeist activity. Shadow people like to walk in front of the glass doors in the restaurant by the lobby desk. Also, the dishes that sit up on the racks rattle, and there is no way a human can shake those racks to make the dishes rattle the way they do. These are only a few examples of the activity present in the restaurant. Activity Subsides as the Hotel Visitation Picks Up The hotel, as I mentioned above, has been pretty quiet. Only a couple of things going on here and there. But, I have to say that being at the hotel for just over five years now, I find that paranormal activity does happen often, but I have become somewhat desensitized to these paranormal events. The very first night that I worked at the hotel, I had a paranormal experience. Something unseen pulled on my collar. I wasn’t startled, but I was very intrigued. Today, seeing a shadow figure on the wall or hearing a disembodied voice or footsteps doesn’t usually surprise me, and even others who work the night shift. So, it has to be something pretty “big” to really catch my attention or

for me to even really say anything about. Again, shadow people or the knocks that we hear on the walls, etc., just do not really do anything for me anymore. I guess I’m getting used to our very haunted hotel. Heading Out to an Off-Site Investigation I am getting ready to head out to Montana for a few days to investigate at Montana State Prison. So, hopefully, I will have some stories I can share with you next month, as well as maybe a short video. It’s a short one this month, but I do hope everyone is doing well, be careful while out on investigations!

Can Pets Sense Paranormal Activity? By Chris Davis, Proximity Paranormal
have experienced a lot of paranormal activity during my life. And most times, my pets have sensed that activity too. I’d like to share a few stories with you that demonstrate that pets can sense and see things that defy scientific explanation. The first story takes place when I was living in Ohio. There was a lot of activity that centered around the closet in our bedroom. We lived there for more than three years and a few things happened that we couldn’t explain. When the neighbors moved in, they gave away some items and gave me a sword. It was purely decoration, but not having any place to put it, I shoved it in the closet until I could build a stand for it. Not even realizing it at first, but the paranormal activity in the house, and especially in the bedroom, picked up. It actually took me a few months to realize it. One of the things that happened was the chair in the bedroom rocking itself even when loaded down with clothes. I tried several time to figure out how it was happening. It wasn’t a breeze from the vents or windows. Several nights I woke up and could have sworn my dad was sitting in the chair. The activity in the bedroom got so bad that my fiancée actually refused to sleep in the room because I would wake up so much in the night that she couldn’t sleep. After awhile we got a dog, and she too refused to come into the bedroom. She would just sit at the landing at the top of the stairs and whimper. No matter what I tried to do to get her to come in that room she never would. I can’t tell you what happened to the sword. I think when we moved I actually forgot about it and left it there, still sitting in the closet.
After Moving to Another State, Paranormal Activity Continues A few years after this, I moved back to Pennsylvania. After moving around several times, I found a place and moved in with a girl. I had paranormal experiences in that house since the very first night. As we sat in our living room talking, we heard some plastic bags rustling in the kitchen where we had stored them. Checking the bags, I found they didn’t fall and nothing inside seemed capable of shifting around. This happened all night long. I actually woke up a few times during the night to the sound. Within a few weeks, I started to notice other little things, such as a light at the top of the stairs that would go across the landing and vanish. I tried everything I could think of to explain this activity, but could not come up with an answer. After a few months my roommate moved out, and I was alone in this two-bedroom house trying to make it work on my own.
My little brother eventually moved in and brought his cat. One day, the cat sat in front of the kitchen and whined for about 20 minutes. I got up to see if maybe she didn’t have any food or water in her bowl, but as soon as I took a few steps toward the door, a shadow moved along the wall. I could clearly make out arms, legs, and a head. I watched as it moved along the wall, going behind the TV and still keeping its form. As soon as the shadow figure got to the stairs where my brother was standing and watching the cat the entire time, he said he suddenly felt a draft and then it was gone. Going back to the strange light I mentioned earlier. One night I was lying in bed after a long day sitting at my computer doing research. I had just shut off the TV in my room and wanted to stretch out and relax a little. The cat was lying on the bed next to me, and I saw the light in the hallway. It was the size of a softball at first and grew to a huge size — I would have to say about three feet across.
I heard a growl coming from the kitchen. I could not figure out what it was. Then it vanished. All of this happened within a few seconds. I looked down at the cat, and she was looking up at me with a “What the hell was that?” look. Then we just both looked back out the door. More Activity Occurs in a New Location Moving ahead in time, I moved to another house. Paranormal activity persisted. Sometimes at night, while walking through the kitchen, I would hear a growl from the same part of the room. It sounded like a big dog growling. To this date, I have been unable to figure out what
this growl is. All I have been able to say is what it isn’t. It isn’t pipes, heating, or a live animal. I wonder if it’s the sounds of a ghost dog, as several have died on the property. I also wonder if it’s something darker in nature. Or maybe it’s just a grumpy spirit. I do know that sometimes at night the cat would come cuddle with me, and she isn’t exactly the cuddliest of cats. In fact, we always joked that “she doesn’t do touchy-feely; she does ouchy-bleedy.” But she would come curl up with me with a terrified look on her face. I always wondered what was scaring her. At this location, we also always felt like we were constantly being watched. The feelings were strongest in one upstairs room, the porch, and when standing out in view of the barn and old sheds. So based on these events and others, it seems clear to me that pets are sensitive to some paranormal activity. I’ve heard other stories that verify this theory as well. What do you think?

What inspired you to write about this? Micah: Well, to be honest, The UFO Singularity is actually a book that attempts to step away from the world of extraterrestrials in a sense. At present, there is no proof that UFO phenomenon must be inextricably linked with extraterrestrial visitation to planet Earth; there is only some pretty good evidence. Proof and evidence are birds of the same feather, but remain very different. And hence, with The UFO Singularity, I chose not to look solely at extraterrestrial phenomenon, but instead what other potentials might exist in terms of explaining what UFOs could be. nomenon, and what we might call “time travel,” for lack of a better term … though I think that if we were to conclude that human perception of “time” is an illusion, we would also quickly learn that there would be no need for literal “time travel” in order for an advanced intelligence to create technology that would interact with our temporal present … even if they did so 30 or even 300 years or more from now. Q: Are you a believer, or a skeptic? Micah: I am a skeptic … but not a disbeliever! A skeptical thinker by today’s standards is generally a person inclined to question or doubt accepted opinions. One of the largest preconceptions or “accepted opinions” regarding UFOs is that they must represent alien visitors from space. This is certainly a belief that I challenge, and while aliens may be one part of the equation, I doubt it explains everything in terms of understanding the UFO phenomenon. The classical skeptic philosophers, on the other hand, doubted the possibility of attaining knowledge, or even rational belief, and adopted this as their world view, choosing instead to abstain from belief on the grounds that withholding judgment might help them to better understand the nature of reality. In large part, I try to do the same, and hence I maintain that I am open-minded but inherently skeptical. Q: What is “the UFO Singularity”? Micah: The UFO Singularity is a term I use to refer to a point after which humankind will likely understand the majority of existent UFO phenomenon, as a result of vast improvements in accessible human technology and information. And yes, this plays somewhat into the discussion of transhumanism and what futurists call “Technological Singularity,” which deals with the creation of intelligence (possible artificial) that exceeds natural levels of human intelligence. In many cases, various kinds of UFO phenomenon may already represent such technology, though whether the intelligence behind them exceeds known attainable levels humans today could access remains in question. Q: Taking this information into consideration, how does this affect your view of UFOs? Micah: It makes me look at the phenomenon very differently than how I once did, because UFOs at one time, for me, seemed to represent alien beings. Now, I’m not so sure that such a potential is the central important concept in our study of UFOs.
In The UFO Singularity, Micah Hanks asks why are past unexplained phenomena changing our future, where will transcending the bounds of current thinking lead, and how near is the singularity?
It causes me to shift my interest over to the fields of cognition, consciousness, and other areas where human technology, and even evolution, are concerned. Q: Why do you think readers, and society in general, are fascinated by the unexplained? Micah: Well, anything that poses an interesting question arouses the curiosity of the human mind. Humans are designed to become curious and to be inquisitive. In a sense, we were “designed” to ask questions so that we might eventually come to a fuller understanding of who and what we are, and what role we play in the universe. Q: You focus a lot on future technology. Does that mean you think UFOs are time travelers from Earth’s future?
Paranormal Underground 65
Micah: As mentioned before, once we eliminate the necessity for viewing the universe in a chronological way, and accept that time does not really exist (instead merely being an “artifact” of human perception, which I think is both a fair and accurate statement), then we eliminate the need for a physical machine that can “travel” through time. I prefer the term “temporal-evasion” over “time travel,” but the latter is a simpler, more popular term that illustrates, in its basic form, the general idea. Q: What are your thoughts on the 1947 Roswell, New Mexico, incident and Area 51?
Q: Have you ever been abducted by aliens?
Micah: Roswell, in my opinion, was the result of some variety of earthly operation. It may not have been the U.S. military or even an enemy nation behind it. But my gut tells me there was more to Roswell having to do with right here. And that’s not to discount the loads of information available out there about the Roswell subject. It’s just to admit that, thanks to misinformation and propaganda, there is a lot of information out there, and very little to substantiate or cater greatly to an informed conclusion. Roswell, whatever really happened there in 1947, has only been effective in keeping our attention perfectly fixed on an incident that may or may not help us learn anything about UFOs any longer, especially if we remain woefully fixed on that single incident. And as for Area 51, it’s a large military installation, portions of which likely exist underground, located at Groom Lake, Nevada. We know secret military craft are tested out there … and I’m not as intrigued by that subject as the potentials for alien cosmology, interdimensional phenomenon, and technologies that evade temporality, as my book details more in depth. In fact, I’m not sure I even mention the words “Area 51” anywhere in The UFO Signularity! Shows where my mind is, I guess!
Micah: I’ve never been abducted by aliens, and I’m fairly certain I won’t ever be! But that’s not because I don’t believe … it’s simply because I think that there is a certain cosmic interrelationship between the mindsets of the “abductee” and the actual abductors … for whatever reason, I think I’ve divorced myself from that aspect of my own conscious existence, setting myself aside as an archetype of the “researcher” or “seeker.” Hence, strange phenomenon seems to steer far clear of me and leaves me just to ponder the potentials from a distance!
Q: Do you have any paranormal pet projects?

Micah: Well, I’m the type that I start a “pet project,” and
before long I start growing an enterprise. I’ve been doing The Gralien Report Website for half a decade now, and the podcast of the same name for the past two years. It all began as an endeavor to expand my Web presence … and now it’s become a much larger, privatized kind of “Internet hub” for my various ufological and anomalous interests. The podcast, unlike a lot of shows, is also broadcast live every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET, and rather than trying to take the show around to other stations, etc., for the time being I’ve just elected to keep the operation close to home and stream the live show right from the Website itself. It’s quite beautifully self-contained, really, in a pretty stripped down and streamlined way. And I don’t mean that to be self-complimentary; egotism is my pet peeve … but I guess that like a lot of Web entrepreneurs, I take pride in creating one focused enterprise and having a variety of facets contained within it that people can access and enjoy.
Q: If given the chance, would you step onto an alien craft, no questions asked? Micah: It depends. Given the amounts of non-ionizing radiation most UFO craft are known to emit, based on the literature, I don’t know that I would willingly get all that close to one and take the health risks involved. Then again, you said alien craft in your question … and for the most part, I have found no way of determining conclusively, from a distance, which UFO craft are “ours,” and which are “theirs.” *****

Demon Scratches, Beelzebub Bruises, and Boo Bites, Oh My! By Jill Marie Morris, www.jillmariemorris.com
ith increasing occurrences of paranormal activity, many investigators are finding themselves having to decipher additional phenomenon relative to claims of demon attacks. From rogue scratches, alarming bruises, and odd bite marks, the physical evidence can be both startling and intriguing. Always wanting to instill a sense of trust with the client, the investigator must perform compassionately, objectively, and as scientifically as possible. This includes completing intake questionnaires with the affected client and any housemates or family members present in the residence. Witness reports specifically pertaining to the “attacks play a crucial role in assisting the investigator. A thorough review of any pictorial evidence is a must. Single photos are helpful, but a series of photographs depicting the evolution of the injuries in a time-elapsed manner is even better. This will provide a glimpse into the healing of the injury and can provide additional clues. Common claims of injuries as the result of demon attacks tend to be grouped into the following categories: Scratches and welts, bruises, and bite marks. Scratches and welts tend to be the most frequent of complaints. More times than not, they appear out of the blue and then vanish, almost as quickly as they occurred. Sometimes, they are accompanied by other phenomenon, or symptoms, all of which need be documented as accurately as possible. Claims involving abusive demons have skyrocketed with the increasing number of paranormal shows. What this means is that although there are certainly credible accounts of attacks, there is an equally, if not higher incidence, of hoaxes geared at attracting attention for a number of reasons, with some claimants plastering photographs all over the Internet. Given the ease of use of
programs such as Photoshop, it makes a daunting task for investigators to determine what is real and what is not. Given the complexity of the client-investigator trust issue, there needs to remain an empathetic yet objective approach in deciphering these nasty scratches, bumps, and bites. A client with a completely plausible history and truthful account may still indeed be suffering something more physiological and physical in nature, as opposed to something more sinister. The last thing that needs to be done is to completely freak out a client by telling them they are being attacked by a demon without backing up that claim. Merely looking at a photograph, or two, is not enough to make a determination, regardless of how sincere the claimant may be or how seasoned the investigator is. The following information is a helpful guideline for investigators, and even the clients themselves, to use when faced with sinister scratches and ghostly nibblings. As always, if there is any suspicion of abuse, it is best to have a heart-to-heart with the client and aid them in getting help.
dermographism, or “Skin Writing.” Dermographism is a type of hive that can also be caused by the very same stimuli that creates a hives reaction. This is a known condition that impacts approximately 5% of the world population and is a condition that all investigators should be made aware of. Very frequently dermographism is caused by stress. The main difference between this condition and hives happens to be the non-circular strike marks, which manifests in a very line-oriented (scratch-like), red, raised fashion and typically vanishes within minutes to hours. These scratches may also itch or burn with intensity. Yes, those claw marks that burn like the fires of Hell may just be dermographism, as caused from stress or allergens. These claw-like markings can occur on any part of the body. This aspect is of particular interest when it comes to the element of stress, as many times clients are anxious or fearful about their situation. Relative to investigators becoming victims of an alleged demon attack, it is important to note that they too, can become irritated, frightened, and anxious while on investigations. Adding into the equation is the fact that hives and even dermographism can be caused by a host of allergens. More times than not, conditions involving pets, mold, and other environmental agents can impact someone who may, or may not, be aware they have an allergy. These conditions are present in just about any given investigation. Most often, hives and dermographism are idiopathic in nature, meaning that they occur randomly. There are also times when a reaction can be classified as immunological, occurring due to changes in the immune system, such as direct contact with an allergen. In this case, the body releases histamine from white blood cells (aka mast cells). A third response resulting in hives, or dermographism, is classified as non-immunological. This means there has been exposure to an agent, which is not considered an immunological reaction. Individuals who fit into the latter two categories (post-testing) may benefit with a doctor’s order for antihistamines. The duration of the hives, or dermographism, is an important factor to note. In matters concerning acute hives, or dermographism, the situation surfaces and then resolves on its own, lasting from a few minutes up to a few hours. On the other hand, chronic hives and dermographism may occur at least twice, weekly, and can present for upwards of 6-8 weeks. Chronic hives and dermographism is usually indicative of a more serious allergy, again,
Hives and dermographism can be caused by a host of allergens.
Scratches & Welts From long, red-grooved scratch lines to splattered, raised welts and rashes, demons and their like seem to be leaving their dark marks all over the place. By investigating the physical and emotional symptoms, in conjunction with claims of paranormal activity, it is best that the investigator understand that there are very real conditions that may cause something that looks identical to a scratch, yet is nothing dastardly in nature. A starting point is with the common condition known as hives. The anatomy of a hive is interesting in itself, as the cause and reaction are specific and unique to the individual experiencing the symptom. Hives occur when the capillaries dilate, resulting in the seeping out of fluid, onto an affected area, or tissues, located in the epidermis. Once the body reabsorbs that fluid, the hives disappear. Hives, wheals and welts (all of the same) can be caused by pet dander, mold, dust, pollen, insects, diet, and so forth. In some cases, the individual may need to seek treatment by a physician and take prescribed medications. Symptoms may last from mere minutes to a few hours and are “spongy,” roundish, raised, and most often red in appearance. They may appear in a single location, remaining isolated, or occur over large parts of the body. The associated itch can range from mild to severe, as well as burn or feel hot to the touch. Another very interesting cousin to hives is known as
Paranormal Underground 69
Paranormal Perspective: Guest Editorial requiring a doctor’s attention who in turn can provide testing to make that determination. Perhaps the most interesting aspect relative to paranormal activity on behalf of the client and the investigator is the “fear factor” and its affect as a stress reaction. It is very common for stress to cause both hives and dermographism. Such reactions can be a mixture of single, or multiple streaks (lines), or hives and wheals. Documented cases relative to “bad stress” pertaining to hives and dermographism have included individuals who have experienced interpersonal conflicts, financial problems, death of a loved one, workrelated issues, fear, anxiety, and panic attacks. Existing, too, are documented examples resulting from “good stress” presenting in situations involving an engagement, marriage, vacation, and even expectant parents. Oh, the joy! To be so excited and happy and ... inflamed. Particularly intriguing is the fact a client may be overly anxious about their situation and may actually be having a stress reaction, much the same as an investigator would, in a given environment. Considering the hype of a paranormal hotspot, it is not unusual for investigators, themselves, to be amped-up for the hunt. Even ego-driven, macho hunters and huntresses are still human and can fall victim to stress and environmental allergens, as much as the clients who are living in an active location. The demon scratches, even if repetitive, may merely be a stress or allergic reaction. Bruises Bruises occur when blood vessels break and the blood from the injury becomes trapped with no place to go. Upon injury, the blood seeps into the soft tissues that lay underneath the skin. During the healing cycle of the injury, the bruise goes through a sequence of color changes. The reason for color changes of the bruise is due to the slow removal of the dead blood particles from the impact of the injury, via the white blood cells. Within the first two days or so, bruises actually appear reddish in color due to the iron that is present in the leaking blood. At this time, there may be inflammation and pain in the region surrounding the injury. From 2–5 days, the bruise will become blue to purple. From approximately days 5–7, it will turn more greenish. This is due to the blood’s biliverdin (green tetrapyrrolic bile pigment). From days 7–10, the bruise will turn yellow, due to the bilirubin content (think of jaundice). During the final stage of the bruise, the appearance is more brownish, where it will slowly fade away during the latter healing phase.
Something to take into consideration relative to bruising is the fact that if an injury occurs and vessels are broken close to the surface of the skin, the colors of the bruising will be more dramatic or intense. Taking careful note of bruises discovered during the course of an investigation will help to identify a timeline, as well as pinpoint additional helpful information. Bruises most certainly will not immediately pronounce as deep black and purple. This would be indicative of something that is approximately 2–5 days old. Timelines must be established to determine what took place at the time of injury, in conjunction with any photographic evidence. The following statistics relative to bruising may also be useful: • Women tend to bruise more easily than men. • Genetics play an important role when it comes to bruising, given inherited medical conditions. • Certain medications, such as aspirin, Coumadin and Warfarin, may cause bruising. • The elderly tend to bruise more frequently due to thinning of skin, age-related medical conditions, and medications used to treat such conditions. It’s a good idea to ask the client if they are aware of any familial histories or if they take any type of medication that may contribute to a bruising issue. Keep your records confidential and ensure the client that you will seek permission should you need to bring in a consultant (medium/psychic), etc. There are a number of medical conditions that can contribute to bruising and welts. An abridged version of ailments includes hemophilia, lymphoma, leukemia, vitamin C deficiency, Von Willebrand’s disease, and
coagulopathy. Other documented occurrences that have led to bruising are sleep walking and sleep striking. Sleep walkers always run a risk for injury, simply due to roaming about during the course of their slumber. Injuries can occur during a single or multiple episodes, and given many people are not even aware they sleep walk, it is something that needs be considered when odd lumps, bumps, and bruises surface. As for sleep striking, this occurs when an individual themselves, or someone else who is sleeping in the bed, flails about during the night. It is not too uncommon for someone to get “clocked” during the night, without even waking up. Seemingly silly, both sleep walking and sleep striking can be very serious and are the culprit of major trauma injuries, primarily occurring on the upper body, neck, face, and head. Make sure that you get a good assessment of the client’s and family’s sleeping patterns, too. This aspect should not be overlooked. Asking the clients about recurring bruises is extremely important, as it may be indicative of a serious, underlying medical condition. As always, keep your questionnaires confidential and do not break the client’s trust.
used during the course of the injury. With excessive violence, or in extreme cases, bite marks will have tears and require attention to prevent infection. Regardless, animals and humans have unique bite patterns, which means that there will not be a “perfect” bite impression or symmetrical pressure within the bite wound. If an investigator sees a fluid, or neat pattern, that is an early indicator that something foul may be occurring on behalf of the client presenting a hoax. Documented, common household items that can result in bite mark patterns may include: • Bent Bottle caps • Clothespins • Hair Clips and Crimps • Snack Bag Clips (Chip Clips) • Alligator Clamps • Crimping Tools Some people will go through extraordinary measures to pull off a hoax. This creates a very delicate balancing act between taking a client’s word as to their paranormal plight, and still having the ambition to scientifically and rationally investigate the hives, scratches, bruises, and bites. Exercise caution and tact when you are confronted with a possible scam. Always go into the case with the understanding that you are there to form an educated opinion based upon experience and investigative technique, and that your word is not set in stone, nor meant to bring shame to the client or family. Demons are evil, so if you see trends for alleged bite marks, scratches, and bruises that lack the drawing of blood, or other remarkable damage, well, chances are, if by chance there is a demon, or nasty entity present, it could fall into the category of being quasi-evil — kind of like Dr. Evil’s Mini Me. In cases where the client may be seemingly suffering serious injuries, and on a repetitive basis, it is always best for the investigator to refer the client to consult with a physician. As investigators, the safety of the client is first and foremost and that means suggesting they take time to get checked by a doctor before continuing with a more in-depth investigation. Once a professional, medical evaluation has been completed and no rational cause can be warranted as to their demon scratches, Beelzebub bruises, or boo bites, then it may be time to bust out the proton pack backpack, and, in the words of Dr. Peter Venkman, “Show this prehistoric b*tch how we do things downtown ... THROW IT!” —Ghost Busters, 1984.
The demon scratches may merely be a stress or allergic reaction.
Bite Marks Animal teeth are different than human teeth, therefore they leave a completely different type of bite marking. But what about ghosts and demons? A series of photos need to be taken over the duration of several days post-bite to show any patterns and bruising that may evolve. Typically, bruising after a bite begins within three hours of the bite and disappears by 36 hours post-bite. Measurements of the wound, inclusive of depth, is also important. Pocket rulers may be a good add to the investigator’s goody bag. Who knew that being an investigator could be so cool, and geeky? There are many different types of bites. An abrasion is the type of bite that is more of a scrape, and mostly superficial. Artifact signals that a piece of the body has been removed during the course of the bite injury (yeah, gross). An avulsion takes place when a piece of skin is removed during the bite (dare a demon do such a thing?). Contusions (bruising) occurs in the area of the bite mark. An incision mark signifies a neat or clean wound, and a laceration is indicative of a bleeding tear-type of bite wound. The higher definition of the bite mark indicates pressure was exerted during the bite. Light bites will render moderate pressure application during the bite injury, and noticeable impressions indicate excessive pressure was
