oin us on October 1st and 2nd at Terry Ashe Park in Paradise for the 128th Johnny Appleseed Days celebration! And if you’d like to get in on the fun beforehand, join the pie party to help bake the 1,000 apple pies that are the centerpiece of the fest. The pies will be baked at the Paradise Moose Lodge. If you are handy with a peeler and a rolling pin, call the Chamber on 877-9356 to sign up. Pie baking is a three-day party that includes raffle prizes, catered lunch, and comradery. Sign up with your family, church group, service group, neighbors or by yourself. Local businesses will be out in force to offer information, demonstrations, promotional materials and gifts. Stop by the Chamber of Commerce Booth for Johnny Appleseed badges, souvenirs, T-shirts and local information. Artisans and crafters from all over the West will be on hand with unique gifts for early Christmas shoppers and treasure seekers. Johnny Appleseed Days is also a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Paradise, the Paradise Rotary, the PairO-Dice Chapter of E. Clampus Vitus, California Vocations, the Boy Scouts and the many local organizations raising funds during the event as participating vendors. The event itself draws visitors to the Ridge, filling motels, restaurants, and cash registers. Johnny Appleseed Days has been proudly sponsored by the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce since 1937. Town Reaps Benefits of Measure C By Lauren Gill Town Manager, Town of Paradise

N

ame one thing that we can all do to help make Paradise a better, safer community—(hint: we do it every day.) Shop Local! By shopping in Paradise, we are investing in our own community. We are making a difference in our Town. Paradise residents can be proud of passing a small sales tax increase in 2014. The benefits of the additional sales tax is evident everywhere we look. And, by supporting local businesses, we are helping our community. It’s a win-win, but does it hurt local businesses? Ask Jim Clarkson, owner of Hudson’s Appliances. At first he was skeptical about the sales tax increase. But Jim loves his Town. Jim supported Measure C — he says it’s the best thing for the Town and has not hurt his business at all. In fact, he says his business has increased as they are still able to compete with big box stores and neighboring communities by matching or beating prices right here on the Ridge! Measure C was passed by the voters of Paradise on November 4, 2014, as a .50% general sales tax increase to primarily benefit police, fire roads and animal control. The ballot measure also called for a nine member oversight board to ensure that the funds are used as intended. According to the Town’s Treasurer/Finance Director, Gina Will, the tax measure is bringing in slightly over one million dollars in additional sales tax revenue per year for the Town. The additional sales tax is markedly improving the Town’s ability to respond to many critical needs in the community. The voters of Paradise made a wise decision and are now reaping the benefits. Thanks to Measure C, the Town now

has a new fire engine and has contributed the necessary funding to maintain our current Calfire service levels. So far, three new police vehicles were added to the fleet. By the time the sales tax sunsets in 2020, the police department will receive a total of fifteen vehicles. A new police detective position was also approved and the hours of operation at the animal shelter were increased. Measure C supplied needed equipment for public safety as well as additional training for officers. For a complete list of items purchased through the Measure C initiative, refer to the Town’s website at www.townof paradise.com. Thank you, Paradise for giving back to your community in a very important way—shopping local is supporting your firefighters and police officers and improving your roads!

Dinner with The Doctor: Healthy Words From The Wise

E

ach month from January to October Feather River Hospital serves up a heaping helping of free health information to Paradise Ridge residents. The popular “Dinner with The Doctor” program pairs a delicious meal with a free lecture on a variety of health-related topics. Held every fourth Thursday of each month, these informal evenings allow residents the chance to get up-to-date health information from local physicians and health care providers in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. A question and answer session with local practitioners at the end of each event allows for specific questions and community engagement. The evening features a healthful, low cost plantbased dinner. The lecture is free and can be attended without the dinner, although reservations are highly recommended whether dining or not. Topics cover a wide range of health areas from head to toe, inside and out. Examples include: Eye Care; Hearing; Reducing Heart Disease Risk; and Cooking for Health. The monthly event is held at various churches in Paradise and Magalia. The final Dinner with the Doctor event of 2016 will feature Dr. Robert Victor, podiatrist, speaking on “Foot Health”. It will be held on October 27 th at St Nicholas’ Episcopal

Church, 5872 Oliver Road in Paradise. Dinner is served at 6pm. The

lecture begins at 6:30. The price for dinner is just $12.
