and confusing dialogue. This will drive positive reviews and increase your brand awareness. • “What examples of company Facebook pages do you consider to be effective?” Look to the experts, or those with multi-million dollar advertising divisions: Starbucks, CocaCola, General Motors, etc. These companies invest large sums of money and labor to present the best marketing trends. Though they are grandiose by our standards, picking features associated with these companies can enhance your page and ultimately, your brand.

ere at the Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce, we’re often asked about social media and its appropriate use in marketing. From simple questions like “How do I add a contact tab to my Facebook page,” to more complex questions on analytic assessments and strategies. As a lot of you tech-savvy folks are aware, most of the answers sought are available on the internet. However, what is not disclosed via the web is your particular hierarchy of needs--that is--specific to your business. Each business is different, requiring a different set of protocols. But the following items are generally embraced by all business pages and are asked most frequently. Members of the PRCC benefit from social media consultation and promotion. To increase your visibility and give you the best possible presentation to the public, we want to make sure your page is up-to-date, functional, and married up to our promotional activities.

• “Should I respond to negative reviews?” Yes. However, this technique is driven by positive communication and should never be accusatory or blaming! Take the time to think out the best response, pass it by your peers, and post it with a desire to remedy the complaint, or shift the focus to something positive about your business.

• “How often should we be replying to fans?” Stay in touch constantly! If your fan “likes” your page and content, interact as much as time allows. If they pose a question, answer it in the most positive way possible, avoiding negatives

These are just a few of the many questions we receive. For an answer to a questions you have on social media, contact us for a more detailed answer. If this was helpful, let us know and we’ll continue to feature this subject in your RBJ.

Paradise’s Forgotten Hero -

“Yellowstone” Kelly By Bill Hartley Owner, Joy Lyn’s Candies Gold Nugget Museum Yellowstone Kelly Committee Chairperson

P

aradise was home to one of the most celebrated and respected figures in the history of the American West. Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly was an American soldier, hunter, trapper, scout, adventurer and friend of Native Americans. After service during the Civil War, Kelly ventured west to the Yellowstone region where he lived the life of a frontiersman. Later, he served as a scout during the Indian Campaigns, led expeditions during the Alaskan Gold Rush, served as Army Captain in the Philippine-American War (where his service was distinguished with a nomination for the Medal of Honor) and was a confidant of President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1904, he was appointed to the position of Indian Agent at the San Carlos Indian Reservation in Arizona. After a life of adventure, Yellowstone and his wife May retired to Paradise in 1915 where they established a productive fruit orchard. Their lovely ranch, Cedar Lodge, was located on Clark Road. Yellowstone Kelly died in Paradise in 1928. Deciding against a burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Yellowstone Kelly instead expressed a wish to rest eternally in Montana where he had spent most of his adventurous life. Montana was honored to receive its onetime citizen and named a mountain for this celebrated adventurer. Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly was laid to rest with full military honors on a mountain top in Billings, overlooking the Yellowstone Valley. Paradise Cemetery is the final resting place for May Kelly and her brother. E

Clampus Vitus dedicated a monument memorializing Yellowstone Kelly at what is now Wilson Paradise Marine at 5368 Clark Road, but he gradually faded from local memory. Our local historical society, The Gold Nugget Museum, is leading the effort to recognize the achievements of this forgotten hero, possibly the most famous person to have lived and died in Paradise. Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly’s story is compelling and provides additional interest to our rich western past. A modest peacemaker, a brave explorer, and an unassuming veteran, Kelly was the confidant and equal of the great men of his day and has been compared to Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. Among the notables Yellowstone Kelly counted as acquaintances or friends were Buffalo Bill Cody (scout), George Bird Grinnell (author), Liver-Eating Johnson (frontiersman whose life inspired the book Jeremiah Johnson, General Nelson Miles, John Muir (naturalist), President Theodore Roosevelt, and Chief Sitting Bull. In Paradise, he was a friend of Dr. Mack, John Bille (pioneer) and Dudley and Minnie Barns (homesteaders where the Paradise Post newspaper is now located). A chief objective in commemorating this local hero is to re-dedicate the Paradise Memorial Trail and name it the Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail. Plans include making the trail a path to our past by recognizing other people who have made significant contributions to the history of the Paradise Community. The Gold Nugget Museum has a collection of bear-paw buttons from Kelly’s shirt on display as well as numerous stories and photographs of Kelly. We invite all visitors to view this display as well as other historical treasures, and to learn more about this forgotten hero of Paradise.

Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly: possibly the most famous person to have lived and died in Paradise. Yellowstone Kelly Bear Paws will be available at Joy Lyn’s Candies, 1183 Bille Road, when the shop reopens October 1, and while supplies last at the , 502 Pearson Road. One dollar from each paw will help the Gold Nugget Museum to keep Yellowstone Kelly’s legacy alive.

Paradise Irrigation District Turns 100 D rive through Forest Ranch or Cohasset and you’ll discover there’s not much happening in the form of commerce or community. That’s how our Paradise Ridge might have been if not for the easy availability of affordable water for residents, for business and for agriculture. The formation of Paradise Irrigation District (PID) in 1916 made the growth of our community possible—and throughout 2016, the district is celebrating with Paradise its 100 years of service. Originally formed to provide service to small farms and orchards, PID is a special district governed by a five-member board of directors, elected by the district’s residents. The water district is not a part of the Town of Paradise administration, and pre-dates the municipality by more than six decades.

Paradise Irrigation District Office on Pearson Road, circa 1916. Early in its formation, the district spent $14,000 for water rights from PG&E and began planning construction of the Magalia Dam in 1917. This project required a $350,000 bond issue—a hefty amount considering the assessed value of all lands within the district was $348,000 at that time—but residents knew how important water would be for the community’s progress so they overwhelmingly approved the bond with a 224-24 vote.

Paradise Dam was constructed in 1956, following another successful bond vote, and the dam was raised in 1976 to provide increased water storage. Prior to the dam’s construction, the Upper Ridge area was known as Mosquito Creek Junction. Paradise Lake encompasses 244 surface acres of water and offers 7.5 miles of shoreline. The lake offers opportunity for hiking, bicycling fishing, kayaking, rowing and canoeing, as well as a picnic area, wedding gazebo, playground, and a 4.5-mile trail.

man- and donkey-power. A slurry of mud and rocks formed the dam, which spanned Little Butte Creek and held 1,950 acre-feet of water. With the construction of the Magalia Reservoir (originally called Lake Goodner) in 1918, more small farming operations began on the Paradise Ridge, described as “the garden spot of the world.” “Every deciduous fruit and nut grows here to perfection,” enthused a promotional brochure, encouraging farmers to settle in the District. “The prosperity of Paradise is built upon its apples, pears, cherries, olives, almonds, walnuts, grapes and berries of all kinds, and its prosperous and growing poultry industry.” The community’s continued growth was tied to PID’s provision of water; in fact, the water district was associated so closely with the community that publications often used the names “Paradise” and “District” interchangeably prior to the incorporation of the Town of Paradise In Paradise’s early years, hand-dug wells provided drinking water to the area’s residents, but with the ready provision of water throughout the Ridge, increasing numbers of households connected to PID’s supply to provide domestic water to their homes. Today, the majority of the district’s customers are residential.

Water turbidity during winter months forced the 1986 construction of a water filtration plant. Heightened requirements for drinking water regulations brought the completion of PID’s expanded water treatment plant in 1995, approved by a majority of 65% of the district’s voters. PID continues to provide high quality water to Paradise residents; the treatment plant is staffed around the clock and water is tested weekly. Water quality reports are available to all residents. Pipes continue to be replaced throughout the district; few of the post World War II steel pipes remain in service. Drop by the District Office at 5399 Clark Road for a peek at one of the original redwood pipes. With AquaHawk, PID customers may check their water usage online and be alerted about possible leaks. They may also monitor their daily water use for enhanced efficiency. With all its technological improvements, PID remains focused on its role as a service to the community, providing high quality water to allow Paradise to prosper and remain a great place for people to live, work and play.

Eat, Drink, Buy Paradise 2016 By Monica Nolan Executive Director, Paradise Ridge Chamber of Commerce

O

n Wednesday, May 12, Paradise Chamber and community members gathered to Eat, Drink & Buy Paradise at the Paradise Moose Lodge. This event was generously supported by Wells Fargo Bank, which invests in community by sponsoring Chamber events and projects on a year-round basis. Chamber members and the public networked and shared information about local goods

and services while sampling excellent offerings from The Women of the Moose. A stamp card system ensured that attendees visited all exhibits, collecting SWAG and information about our local shops and services, and several local shoppers walked away with prizes. Because local businesses are essential to the vitality of our local economy and character, your Chamber organizes this event each spring to spotlight new members and connect business with community. Shop the Ridge first; for every dollar you spend in your local community, 68 cents stays put to support local services and infrastructure.
