Soaring Over Lake Tahoe I’m not going to call myself a daredevil, although sometime I wish I were one. My vacation stories are usually pretty light on action, heavy on the hammocks. So I was more than a little nervous when I found myself considering going aloft in an aircraft with no engine. At first thought, flying in a glider seemed like an activity only for the brave of heart. Yet after just a few minutes with Laurie Harden’s friendly staff at SoaringNV in Minden, NV, I knew I was in good hands. The professionals at SoaringNV really took their time getting me comfortable in the front seat of the glider and explaining the instruments and controls. While my FAA-certified glider pilot and flight instructor got buckled in the backseat, he explained what I would be experiencing during the flight. My excitement mounted as the tow pilot attached the tow line to the glider, started his own engine, and began the take-off roll. Only a few bumps down the runway, and we were off the ground, being towed smoothly

behind the tow plane. We circled over the airport, gaining altitude, then headed west toward Lake Tahoe. When we were about a mile above the ground, I got to pull the yellow knob releasing us from the tow plane. I’ve seen it from the road, and I’ve seen it from a boat, but seeing the crystalline blue of Lake Tahoe from a glider was breathtaking. My whole flight could have been this relaxing, but Stefan (my pilot) offered me the controls. My stick and rudder time filled me with so much confidence, that I requested some aerobatics. In that one flight, I went from a girl that doesn’t venture to the woman who flew upside down over Lake Tahoe. Facing Up to The Holidays The Holiday Season, filled with celebrations and events, is often followed by the setting of New Year’s resolutions for how we take care of our bodies, face and skin. Whether it’s a treat you’ve just decided to give yourself or something you’ve been considering for a while, a few simple things can reduce the signs of aging. Dr. Jill Hessler, a double board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, states that, “The eyes are generally the first place to display signs of aging.” Fortunately, there are a wide variety of treatments available. Botox works very well to erase the crow’s feet and lines between the eyebrows. Lasers and chemical peels can smooth the skin when deeper lines are present, as well as remove signs of sun damage. When under-eye bags are present, surgery is your best option, Dr. Hessler explains.

Dr. Hessler received her training at the University of Michigan and was on the faculty at the Washington University School of Medicine before moving to the Bay Area to start her practice in Palo Alto. Ronald McDonald House® at Stanford Where Healing Happens Together Our story began nearly a year ago, when without warning, my three-year-old daughter Nevaeh suffered a seizure that lasted more than 20 minutes. Terrified, I called 911 and my little girl was rushed to the ER where she experienced additional lifethreatening seizures. A few hours later, Nevaeh was flown to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, where doctors worked to keep her alive. My two other children, Audrey, Nevaeh’s twin sister, and three-year-old Patrick, stayed with a relative while I drove hundreds of miles from Reno to Palo Alto, not knowing if Nevaeh would survive until I arrived. At the hospital, I found my little girl clinging to life. I was told she would need a kidney transplant and later, a liver transplant, and that it could take months of treatment and therapy before she would be strong enough for surgery. After five long weeks in the hospital, doctors

released Nevaeh to stay at Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. They knew the House would provide a safe and supportive environment close to the hospital where she could gain strength surrounded by her own family. Together, my children and partner Joe have made the House our home for nearly a year. Here, we benefit from a tightknit community of support comprised of amazing volunteers, dedicated staff, and the comfort of other families who are going through the same struggles. This is what makes the House a home. Nevaeh is now strong enough to be on the kidney transplant list and together we are anxiously awaiting the call telling us an organ is available. Every day I am grateful for Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. Here we receive the support, comfort, and care that allows my family, and many more like mine, to stay and heal together.
