Your Company / Career? Paleo Café started in Cairns in October 2012. The idea about Paleo came from Troy being born dairy intolerant forcing Marlies and I to learn about the effects of food choices and how these impact on health. Through the first few painful months of his life we had no sleep, a child spewing, screaming and generally unhappy, so we learned a lot about the Paleo Lifestyle. When we started Paleo Café I had been running my own finance business since 2007, Hobbs Financial Services. We always started Paleo Café with franchising in mind but never thought it would happen so quickly. In December 2013 I made the decision to sell Hobbs Financial Services to focus on the growth of Paleo Café and allow Marlies more time to spend with Troy. We now have 12 cafes throughout Australia with many more in the pipeline. It has been a wild ride the last 12 months, we have had to make sacrifices which has impacted on our family time and personal lives. It

is hard at times but we have a clear vision for Paleo Café and are working hard to see that realised. Challenging / Rewarding Aspect? Knowing when to switch off and spend time with family. I am known to have my phone attached to my ear even when kicking a ball or playing with Troy in the backyard, Marlies has posted quite a few photos on social media and it is a running joke amongst everyone at Paleo Café. I can honestly say I love what I do and have a genuine care for our entire Paleo Café team, I want to see them all happy and succeed and love being a part of that. The hardest part is definitely knowing when to switch off. The most rewarding aspect is the knowledge that we are improving the livelihood of our family in more ways than one. Through education on food choices and how that affects health and basic principles in life - if you want something then you have to work hard for it. Fatherhood Advice? A good friend of mine told me: “don’t find yourself wishing their life away.” By that I mean don’t say I can’t wait until they are walking and I can take them fishing etc. Enjoy the now as it disappears before you know it.

Becoming a father was the most exciting and grounding experience I have been through. It put everything into perspective and made me not take myself too seriously. Enjoy every moment and don’t forget to take time for the little things in life because they are what matter the most. I am still working on this!

Troy loves a joke, he cracks me up every day with the one liners that come from the mouth of a three year old. He often imitates what I do like mowing the lawn or talking on my phone all the time. He tells everyone that he is busy and talking on the phone like Daddy. Wish for Father’s Day? I'd like to spend time with my family either on our boat at the reef or skiing at the dam. Doing something we all enjoy as a family.

Challenging - prioritising physical activity (exercise) and also allocating downtime as the mind is always working on the next project. I have been very mindful if I have work to do at home that this can be done once the boys are in bed so that from the moment I get home until the boys go to sleep I am spending time with them out in the yard playing games or reading books. The most rewarding part to parenting for me is knowing how dependant my kids are on me at their age and no matter how bad a day you have had when get home, or pick them up from daycare, you get the same reaction every time: as if they haven’t seen you for days.

Shane Muspratt is Queensland Development Par tner for Zambrero Australia as well as a well-known professional rugby league player, ha ving played for the Nor th Queensland Cowboys and the Parramatta Eels. He is marr ied to Rochana and has two sons Car ter (4) and Ethan (2).

I was first introduced to the product in 2012 by a friend I grew up with who is now my business partner Shaun McCarthy. Through a love of the product and its values, I got involved firstly as a franchise partner and have since been invited to oversee the QLD development.

Fatherhood Advice? Enjoy every moment you can, because they grow up so fast. I don’t think anyone ever understands that until you have kids, as it only feels like yesterday they were born.

Learning Difficulties STORY Carly H a mmers l ey

In times gone by, a child acting out or considered “slow” compared to their peers may ha ve been an issue swept under the carpet and not thought much more about. Today, more is known about the link between health issues and learning or beha vioural problems in children. Every parent wants the best start in life for their child. But sometimes children can display behavioural or learning challenges that can leave even the most dedicated of parents shaking their heads. In many cases these episodes may be put down to rebelliousness or a “stage” every child goes through. Often it is the case that learning and behavioural problems in children can be traced back to issues such as auditory processing disorders, vision problems, food sensitivities, intolerances or even biochemical imbalances.

Certified Integrative Health Coach from ASD Healthy Life Rhonda Muller said it was only now becoming more readily accepted that nutrition can play a role in assisting with many issues including: anxiety disorders, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Aspergers, ADD/ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Irlen Syndrome and Speech Delay. “ASDHL is particularly passionate about this, as our own children have had these challenges too. We focus on healing from the inside out, giving our babies the ability to reach their true potential.” Rhonda said food sensitivities and intolerances can often affect learning, with ASD providing treatment including testing, elimination diets and advice on how to heal the gut naturally. While nutritional issues may be difficult to initially diagnose, once identified it is often the case that small changes can have a very big impact on the

child, behaviour and wellbeing. There are other health problems which can see school-aged children being left behind in the classroom, without obvious cause. Dyslexia is one of the main learning disabilities that is now recognised in the classroom and commonly picked up by teachers. In the same vein, and not as well-known, are auditory processing disorders. Children with a Central Auditory Processing Disorders may have normal peripheral hearing but struggle to process auditory information which can lead to problems interpreting and recognising speech. CAPD can lead to or be associated with difficulties in learning, speech and language (including written language involving reading and spelling). These children also have a higher likelihood of behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. While the cause of learning disorders such as CAPD and Dyslexia (ADHD

and ASD) is still unknown, advances in brain research have identified that they are associated with ineffective brainwave rhythms. Too much or too little of a particular brainwave can result in slow processing, hyperactivity and an inability to focus and attend. Inattention is often missed in children with learning disabilities because parents see that their child can focus and attend when playing on the computer or with toys such as Lego. Mind Matters Psychologist Nia Barnes said it is normal human behavior that things we find interesting will always hold our attention but problems with inattention often surface when focus is required and we are forced to attend to things that might be thought of as difficult or boring. “Some children find it so difficult to stay focused for any length of time that they miss large pieces of information in class. This results in gaps in their learning. Over time these gaps become so big that learning becomes difficult.“ “Neurofeedback is becoming well known for its effectiveness in treating many conditions including learning disorders. It works by training the brain to produce more efficient brainwave rhythms, creating a brain that is more relaxed and focused which is an optimum and required state for learning. Neurofeedback uses the brain's ability for neuroplasticity to address issues at their core." One of the best ways to get a jump start on learning children is to simply read to children from a young age. Melanie von Bertouch from Coastal Kids Speech Pathology said reading and writing are language-based tasks and pre-schoolers with good oral

Se p t e m b e r 2 0 1 4 | w w w .pak mag . com. au

language skills usually go on to be good readers. “The process of reading and writing improves our oral language skills as we learn new vocabulary and sentence structures from what we are reading. As many as half of all poor readers have an early history of spokenlanguage disorders, whether this be that they started talking later than usual, were difficult to understand, had difficulty following instructions or used shorter, simpler sentences than their peers.” Melanie said one of the biggest predictors of literacy success in the early years is a skill called phonological awareness - this includes things like rhyme awareness, breaking words into syllables, being able to break a word up into its sounds and being able to move sounds around in words. Melanie said there were a number of ways parents could help to help prevent learning difficulties in pre-schoolers. “Read to your child every day. Use these times to talk about what might happen next, why characters did the things they did, and link it back to things they have experienced. Point out print in their everyday environment, logos, street signs, labels on food packaging. Introduce nursery rhymes, rhyming games, and alliteration. “But most importantly, let your kids see you using written language in a variety of ways - let them help you make a shopping list, follow instructions for putting together a new toy, or follow a recipe, as well as reading for pleasure.” These basic pointers will also allow you to keep an eye on how your

child’s eyesight may be developing, as vision is one of the key senses required for learning in the classroom and plays a major role in reading, spelling and writing. Parents may assume clear eyesight is all that is required for these tasks, when a variety of scanning, focusing and visual coordination skills are required for learning. While vision issues do not cause learning disabilities alone, they can impede normal development and interfere with the learning process so it is important that, should you notice your child having difficulty with their eyesight, they should be thoroughly tested and if necessary, have glasses prescribed to remedy the situation. Some signs of visual problems in school aged children include: • Holding a book very close • Holding their head at an angle when reading or covers one eye • Squinting, poor posture or moving head back and forwards instead of only moving the eyes • Poor attention span or drowsiness after prolonged work • Omitting small words • Re-reading or skipping words or lines unknowingly • Using a marker or finger to keep their place • Headaches after reading • Child fails to visualise (can’t describe what they’ve read about) Most school screenings only test the sharpness or distance of eyesight, so as a result many vision problems that impact on learning have a tendency to go undetected. However, having their eyes checked by an optometrist can provide an easy treatment and enhance the ability of your child to perform to their full potential.

Stress and Young People Children can experience stress as well as adults. The issue of coping with stress is a topic that is widely dealt with in regard to adults. It is less widely dealt with in regard to children and pre-adolescents. I am not a qualified psychologist, but I have made some observations, over my years in education, which may be of some help and interest to readers. Children often do not have the life experience within which they can frame what they are experiencing. When you ask an adult why they flew off the handle at you, or why they appear agitated or anxious, they can usually identify it as a consequence of a stressful situation they are experiencing. Adults can look back at their life experiences, the experiences of others they have observed, and use language they have developed as a result of these things. Children, more often than not, cannot draw on such experience. Sometimes when we ask our children why they spoke in a certain tone;

reacted badly to something; or just had a bit of a meltdown, when they tell us they don’t know - they really don’t know. Psychologists have identified that some life events add more potential negative stress to our lives than others do. In the Holmes and Rahe Stress Inventory five of the top ten contributors to life stress involve disruption or change in family circumstances. Of the other five, two involve major changes in work circumstances. We live in a society where many marriages struggle and sometimes fail. While this is enormously stressful for the adults involved, it is also hugely stressful for any children involved as well. In tough economic times many families find the main income earner unemployed, having to change jobs, or experience change in work conditions that cause stress and uncertainty as well as putting families in financial distress.

We must remember that our children are not shielded from the impacts of these of stresses. On top of the things happening within the family environment kids are trying to cope with the expectations of school and their peers. I encourage you to talk openly with your children, in age appropriate ways, about what is happening in your world that might be impacting on your emotions and causing you to experience stress. Create the opportunity for them to talk to you about the same thing in their lives. Look for changes in their behaviour such as reactions, sleep patterns and signs of depression. If you see any of these talk to them. If they don’t talk to you create opportunities for them to talk with someone else, or even consider asking a counsellor to speak with them. Remember that children experience stress, they often don’t know they are experiencing it, and they may need your help working it through.

Croup Croup is an infection which causes inflammation and swelling of the larynx (voice box) and trachea (windpipe). It is caused by a virus and results in a hoarse voice, noisy breathing and a harsh, barking cough. It mainly occurs in kids under five.

They like to move it, move it STORY Narelle Muller Keeping kids active is the key to a brighter future, says personal trainer Narelle Muller. It’s easy to look at your child and think, “It’s just puppy fat, they will grow out of it”. It’s equally simple to justify bad dietary habits and lack of exercise with excuses. However, that’s exactly what they are – excuses. The truth is, overweight kids are likely to grow into overweight teens, ending up as overweight adults with chronic health problems. With around a quarter of children either overweight or obese, along with well over half of Australian men (63%) and almost half of women (48%) and rising, it’s time to take responsibility and stop with the excuses. Children need daily physical activity to live healthy lives and figures show most young people get far less than the recommended 60 minutes of exercise daily. Movement helps bodies perform at their best - and who doesn’t want the best for their kids? But it is also proven to reduce many health risks. Building strength, bone density, healthy joints and muscles is all part of maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise is proven to help children in

other ways too. It allows for better sleep and reduces stress levels. By encouraging children to move more, we provide insurance for their health and wellbeing in the future. Entrenching good daily habits means you give your child the gift of a happy healthy lifestyle. AGES 6 -12 It is essential to lay the foundation for exercise habits now. Encourage kids to try sports and activities to see what works for them. Consider team sports, dancing, gymnastics, swimming, martial arts, as well as fun family activities such as bike rides, walks and outdoor adventures. AGES 13-18 Encourage teens to keep up daily physical activity as around the age of 13-15 years they tend to become more sedentary. Exercise will not only help with weight management, it also increases social interaction and self-esteem. Narelle Muller is a journalist/ health writer of more than 20 years’ experience and a personal trainer at Fit & Well. For more information contact 0412 745 519.

Croup normally starts with typical symptoms of a cold - runny nose, a slight cough and a temperature - then develops into the typical barking cough of croup (it can sound like you have a seal or a dog in the house!). The sound of the cough is caused by air going through their swollen, narrow airways. Unfortunately, croup often comes on late at night which can be very scary for both kids and parents. The cough can be worse if your child is upset or crying, so the first step is to try and comfort and calm them down. YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO SEE A DOCTOR URGENTLY IF: · They are having difficulty breathing or are breathing quickly · They are making a noise like a snore or a squeal when they breathe in or out ·

You can see the skin in between the ribs or at the base of the neck being sucked in and out when breathing (this shows that they are having to use extra muscles to breathe)

· They are suddenly very lethargic, sleepy or restless · There is a bluish tinge to their lips · They have difficulty swallowing or are drooling a lot If you have any doubts or worries, see a GP or go to the hospital. Mild croup can be treated at home with rest, paracetamol and extra fluids. Otherwise, it is usually treated with one or two doses of a steroid. This is very safe and works by reducing the swelling in the airways.

BUMP &BUB Bonding With Baby STORY Carly Ha mmers l ey No doubt about it, parenting is hard work. But no matter your occupation, it will be the most important kind of work a man can do. A consistent and frequent presence of a father figure in a child’s life has been proven to make a powerful difference in their development and socialisation - and there’s no better place to start than right from the moment they arrive! Early on in a baby’s life, new dads can often feel left out and unsure of their role when baby is born. During those sleepless first few weeks of your baby’s life, it can be hard for new Dads to find a groove. Unlike new mums, they may not have had as much time to realise that pregnancy results in a brand new little person and can spend the first few days in a state not dissimilar to shock! Given some time, Dad and baby will develop their own special bond. Here are our top tips for getting to know your bub from the kick-off: TRAIN FOR THE TEAM The only way to learn how to care for your baby is by doing it. There is no ‘practice run’ or ‘warm up lap’. Get in there and change that dirty nappy, give bath time a go, and do your best to offer comfort during those inevitable times when baby seems to be unsettled. Dads in particular seem to be able to offer a ‘magic touch’ during those rough night time hours when mum desperately needs

a break and to catch up on some much needed Zzzzzzzzz. Learn the football hold (which babies adore) and never look back!

baby’s outfit. If she happens to negatively critique what you are doing, remind her you need the practice and want to be involved.

TAKE THE TIME

DON’T SIT ON THE BENCH

If you're back at work following baby’s birth, try to make spending time with your baby part of your evening and weekend routine. Pop him into a baby carrier and go out for an after-dinner stroll. Or just sit together for a while and tell him all about your day. It’s a great way to give mum a break and of course, it’s never too early to start reading to your little one either.

In the early days, breastfeeding can be a marathon for mum and bub and take up a great deal of her time. Try to resist the temptation comment about how the couch may be her new home! You can help out by offering her snacks and drinks (breastfeeding mums particularly need to keep up their water intake). Score yourself even more brownie points by downloading a selection of her favourite TV shows or movies for her to work through.

STEP UP TO THE PLATE Your partner may feel like she's failing as a mum if she's not the one who feeds, changes, dresses and comforts your newborn 24/7. But it's vital that you take over from time to time. It’s important not only for your development as a dad, but also for your baby and for your partner's sanity. So even if she protests, jump in and take on some of those baby-care chores. STAND YOUR GROUND They probably won’t even notice they are doing it, but many new mums tend to undermine their partner's chances of success. Your partner may cut in when you’re hesitantly trying to change that first nappy or your

Once breastfeeding is established, you can give your baby a bottle of expressed milk. It will give you some quality bonding time, and your sleepdeprived partner will probably be eternally grateful for your efforts! SKIN TIME Newborns love having skin-to-skin contact. In fact, “kangaroo care” as it is known has been shown to have a multitude of benefits, especially for ill or premature babies. Mums aren’t alone in being able to provide this comfort, so get that shirt off, strip baby down and spend some time bonding. You’ll be surprised how quickly holding your baby will become second nature to you.

Safety first that’s how we roll Getting your first bike can be one of the most exhilarating childhood experiences. As a parent, watching their eyes pop as the shiny new machine is wheeled out – priceless. Teaching your “baby” how to get up and ride the bike – that’s a different story. Tears, tantrums and training wheels – but nothing beats watching the pride in themselves as they learn to ride solo and discover the freedom of having your own “wheels”. Part of that learning to ride experience should always incorporate safety, they’re not just going to ride around the backyard forever! According to PCYC Mackay Branch Manager Sergeant Kelsie Henderson, most kids actually wear their helmet incorrectly. “We see a lot of kids putting their helmet on wrong, and if it’s on wrong – it can’t save your life.” PCYC run bike education classes across the Mackay region, and for

the September school holidays these two hour classes are being offered free thanks to Active Towns – an initiative of Mackay Regional Council and the Queensland Government. “Our classes cover all aspects of bike safety – from how to put on your helmet correctly, to essential road rules to basic bike maintenance.” The classes are being held in Mackay, Calen, Sarina and Marian - and they’re open to the whole family. “Doing a bike education class with your child gives you a refresher on how to signal properly, how long to stop and more – plus it’s a fun way to spend time together.” “Riding is an activity that brings a lifetime of fun, fitness and freedom – it’s a great gift to give your child.” For class dates, times and locations or to book in, contact PCYC Mackay on 4942 3296.

Boys Bedroom

HOME

S T O R Y C a r l y H a m m e rs l e y Boys bedrooms. It’s a subject that even the most enthusiastic home DIY decorator can find leaves them shaking in their boots! While parents may put a lot of thought into decorating the perfect little girl’s haven, sometimes individuality in boys rooms can be overlooked. The somewhat default racing car bed and lego-strewn room isn’t the only option and it is just as important for little guys to have their own individual space reflecting their own personalities as it is for girls.

02

You can create a modern, versatile, welcoming space that will grow as they do without spending the earth. A great place to start is by picking a colour scheme. Black and white is a classic, on trend combination and the brilliance of it is that other colours can be incorporated to add pops of colour or as a feature. Often, something simple like black and white can be more effective than drowning the room from floor to ceiling in a favourite colour (which, when prompted will no doubt be spiderman red, Octonaut

03

04

blue or perhaps even a graffiti-covered feature wall!) The other bonus about using basic colour combinations is you will find the majority of furnishing options are available in these colours and budget-friendly choices will be more readily available. You can also incorporate a love of lego, superheroes, or another favourite trend in a sophisticated way through the incorporation of modern, whimsical artworks and offbeat pieces. These can be removed and replaced as one trend is inevitably replaced with another without dating the bedroom as your funky little man grows into an opinionated tween. GET THE LOOK Ikea Ribba picture ledges are used for wow effect behind a basic white bedframe as a book and artwork display shelf. The ledges, priced at just $14.99 each and available in Far North Queensland through Sweden to You, are a fantastic cost-effective alternative to bookcases and take up much less space. They also allow books to be displayed with covers face out so they double as artwork and can be rotated to keep boys interested. The wall in this room has been decorated with a black and white star wallpaper, however if you’re feeling very creative, attempt a similar look utilising a large star wall stencil. Blackboard paint applied to a single section of wall allows children to add their own artistic touch to their room. For a statement piece to leave others for dead, Fromage la Rue’s Vegas Boneyard Letter Lights can be either wall mounted or placed on shelves and are around 60cm high. For a budget alternative, many craft stores stock wooden letters that can be painted to give an aged or industrial effect at a fraction of the price.

Sophisticated Safari STORY So fie B u c hho l z Create a sophisticated safari bedroom that can grow with your son. Think ‘The African Queen’ rather than ‘The Jungle Book’, and graduate from cartoon monkeys to pith helmets and raw timber. Earthy tones such as orange, brown and yellow with pops of green provide a great starting pallet for your room, evoking the sense of a roaming animal herd amongst the grasslands of Africa. An animal skin is the quintessential ingredient for any ‘man cave’ – young or old – however, they are costly and not practical for a young adult’s bedroom. Making one from a life-like fur fabric will not only save money but can be custom sized for the room. It could also be delicately washed, if necessary. The rug made in this feature room was designed to reflect the colours and fur of a cheetah. Fur fabric is available from most fabric stores and usually comes in a wide width suitable for cutting out a fur skin shape without any joining or sewing of fabric.

HOW TO MAKE • Buy the necessary amount of fabric for the size of the rug you wish to make. This fabric was purchased at Spotlight and was 150cm wide. 2m was purchased. • On paper first, draw out the shape of the animal skin. If you are comfortable drawing free hand, copy an image of a real animal skin rug as a guide. If you know someone with a real animal skin, make your pattern by tracing around their rug.

02

HINT You could draw just one side of the animal skin to create a pattern. When cutting, fold your fabric in half, and place the straight edge side of your pattern on the folded edge to create a mirror image. • Pin down / cut around your pattern. • Most fur does not fray from the cut edge, and can be left unfinished and placed straight in the room. However, if the fur does fray, the rug may need to be backed or the raw edged finished with a sewing machine to make it a practical interior piece.

Allure Hotel

travel ideas

STORY Bree Ja mes Allure Hotel and Apar tments is t h e l a t e s t a d d i t i o n t o T o w n s v i l l e’s accommodation market. As soon as I walked through reception, the crisp new smell made me sigh in anticipation of relaxation as I knew we were in a place of quality. As soon as we parked downstairs, the kids excitedly jumped in the elevator with what seemed like half of our house with scooters, toys, and food to feed half of the complex- but it was super easy to unpack the car and put it straight into the lift. And because there are only 2-3 apartments per floor, you literally hop straight out of the very quiet elevator to your room. The kids ran through each room and we were all excited to be in such a huge apartment with a beautiful view. We unpacked everything into the cupboards and drawers and instantly felt like we could live in the apartment forever! The Apartments and Studio Rooms at Allure offer some of the best outlooks in Townsville with all apartments enjoying panoramic views of Magnetic Island and the Townsville Marina. We spent much of our time sitting here enjoying the view. Our guestroom was a three bedroom, contemporary in style and very spacious. The kitchen had lots of mod-cons including stainless steel appliances, a full size fridge and dishwasher, oven, cooktop & microwave. Tea and coffee are supplied but make a trip to the supermarket to stock up on all the supplies you need to cook in the well equipped kitchens. If you don’t feel like cooking, there are many restaurants including the family

friendly Crown On Palmer downstairs and many takeaway options are all in walking distance. There is also a full laundry with washing machine and dryer in your room but you will only need to wash your clothes, as the apartments are serviced daily which is rare in this style of accommodation. The lounge and dining areas are very spacious and comfortable with a six seat dining table, and two couches. There is complimentary high speed Wi-Fi internet, flat screen TV's, and air-conditioning to make you feel right at home and comfortable. Most days we spent the morning having breakfast on the balcony, before a quick stop at the gym and pool. Then a day out exploring the city before sunset drinks back on our balcony. Allure is located only minutes from Townsville Airport, the Aquarium and Museum are in view from your room, and the Strand is only five minutes’ drive away. Your room is just steps from fine dining, bars and shopping on the ever popular Palmer Street. All in all we had a great week at Allure and can highly recommend it for a trip for the family, a couples weekend away, or solo business traveller.
