Behind the Rockin' Music!

The San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival has become more and more well known for its fantastic music schedule, bringing bands from all over the state to play to packed audiences. This year much of the music is related to the ’60s and ’70s with the fun and upbeat Hippy Hippy Shake theme. So come to San Anselmo and experience fun flashback of sorts and hear the following great line-up of bands.

Experience the Summer of Love and more with California Dreamin’ Take a musical journey through the Golden State with California Dreamin’. Bandleader Cris Snyder begins the show amidst the opening strains of Monterey saying: “Our journey begins during the Summer Of Love (June, 1967) at the Monterey Pop Festival.” From that point, the band steers its musical hot rod up and down the highways of California, riding a uniquely themed, colorfully costumed, choreographed, multi-media presentation of live music. The journey covers many places in song (Lodi, Dock Of The Bay, L.A. Woman, If You’re Going To San Francisco, California Sun). It also looks at life-styles (Life In The Fast Lane, Hollywood Nights); the myths, the legends and more. Dreamin’ includes artists who are part of California’s popular musical heritage, including the Doobie Brothers, Doors, Grateful Dead and more. Historical events are also highlighted such as the Beatles final concert at Candlestick Park in 1966 and the beginning of the “protest” era in Hollywood on the Sunset Strip. California Dreamin’ is a memory-filled, nostalgic look at California, revealed in the lyrics of popular songs that everyone knows and love. (Take a tour of the state with California Dreamin’ on Sunday from 12:30 to 2:30pm on the Boppin Bolinas Stage.)

Band members from Sammy’s Cabo Wabos rock with Cream of Clapton The Cream of Clapton is a talented and spellbinding tribute show sharing the sounds of Cream. It features Kevin Russell on guitar and vocals with David Lauser doing drums and vocals and Mona Gnader on bass and vocals. The Motor City-born and raised Russell has a very unique blend of blues, rock and soul. Russell says: “It’s a Motor City thing.” He is considered a soulful guitar player as well as a singer/songwriter and record producer. He first rose to prominence with the classic rock band 707. The band’s hit I Could Be Good For You was featured in the film Grown Ups starring Adam Sandler. Russell recently finished more than 380 shows in the cast of the Broadway hit Jersey Boys in New York City and San Francisco. Laser is best known for his work with Sammy Hagar. You can catch him live and on record as the driving force behind Hagar and his Wabos. He divides his time between Sammy and The Cream of Clapton. Gnader performed with Tommy Tutone and later became the bassist with Hagar and also performs with both bands. (Catch the Cream of Clapton on Saturday from 4 to 6pm on the Boppin’ Bolinas Stage.)

Beatles fans can’t miss the popular band The Sun Kings One of the favorite bands to entertain at the festival year after year is the Sun Kings, the premiere tribute to the Beatles led by the talented Drew Harrison. The Sun Kings has been packing theatres, music halls, and outdoor festivals for more than a decade. Their attention to detail is uncanny and their energy reminiscent of the joy and excitement felt at

a real Beatles concert. The Sun Kings repertoire includes more than 100 Beatles songs spanning The Beatles entire musical career from She Loves You to I am the Walrus to Side 2 of Abbey Road. The Sun Kings ask a simple question: What if The Beatles had reunited in concert? They don’t dress up, but the bands attention to detail, and ability to capture the authenticity and vitality of the music has gained them critical acclaim and respect amongst Beatles purists, as well as fans around the country. Expect to hear favorite Beatles’ songs performed brilliantly. (See them on the Trippin’ Tunstead Stage on Sunday from 2:15 to 4:45pm.)

Sway with Zebop! performing the best of Santana Zebop! has also been a continued favorite at the San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival. You can tell when Zebop! is on the stage because the area is swamped with hundreds of people dancing to the great tunes of Santana. The band takes its name from the classic Santana album of the same name and is one of the most popular tribute acts in the Bay Area, gaining their own following of Santana fans. Zebop! was formed in 2005 by guitarist Antonio Marquez. Although a Santana fan for years, it was his talent and inspiration that attracted many established local musicians to the line-up which includes: Luis Enrique (Qique) Sandoval, vocalist; Ernest Angulo, percussionist; Arturo Padilla, drummer; Dave Pierce, keyboardist; and Chris Hartje, bass. (See them on the Trippin’ Tunstead Stage from 3:30 to 5:30pm on Saturday and the Boppin’ Bolinas Stage from 3:30 to 5:30pm on Sunday.)

Experience the sounds of the ‘60s with Revolver Revolver is a trio of seasoned musicians who grew up rocking to the sounds of the ‘60s. Inspired by the songwriting and melodic hooks of groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Hollies, Kinks, Animals, Lovin’ Spoonful and Buffalo Springfield, they took up instruments and formed groups to experience the energy and sensations of playing in a fired-up band. Some of the first tunes they learned were some of these wellcrafted gems from artists of the ’60s. Their love and appreciation for that genre of music is why they decided to form the group Revolver in the first place. All three members are singers and multi-instrumentalists, giving Revolver a full and versatile sound including great lead singing, threepart harmonies, and a musical blend of guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and percussion. It’s a big sound for three guys. Revolver is: Michael Budash on guitars, keyboards and vocals, Barry Blum on bass guitar, guitars, keyboards and vocals, and Dan Durkin on drums, rhythm guitar, keyboards, harmonica and vocals. (See Revolver on the Trippin’ Tunstead Stage on Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30pm.)

Bop to Boptropolis on the Boppin’ Bolinas Stage with disco and Motown Boptropolis is new to San Anselmo audiences. The party band plays hits from the ‘70s, ‘80s and more. Founded by keyboardist and singer Al D Bop has a combination of hot vocals, a dynamic stage show and a tight rhythm section. The band offers disco hits such as Brick House and Motown classics such as Let’s Groove Tonight and Heartbreak Hotel. The band is a whole lot of fun. Bop first started playing with a group in the ’70s called the Ultimate Vibes. Other band members include: Greg GMan Simmons, bassist and vocalist; Ron Matthews, keyboardist and vocalist; Mark Coulter, guitarist and vocalist; Kevin Edwards, drummer and vocalist; Sunnie Daye, vocalist; Brianii Savage, vocalist; and Tracy James, vocalist. (See Boptropolis on the Boppin’ Bolinas Stage from 1 to 3pm on Saturday.)

Hear some rock hits with glitz from the all-girl band the Cover Grrlz Also new to San Anselmo’s festival is the Cover Grrlz, who “deliver rock hits with glitz.” The all-girl cover band presents the legends of rock in an electrifying style. They perform the most wanted rock hits from the ’60s to today with tunes from ZZ Top, Queen, U2, Tom Petty, Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin. (Cover Grrlz will be on the Trippin’ Tunstead Stage from 11am to 1pm on Sunday.)

Bluegrass fans will want to visit their roots with Savannah Blue Savannah Blue is a powerful contemporary bluegrass band with soulful vocals and driving rhythm. Savannah pushes bluegrass far beyond its rural roots with originals that resonate from traditional bluegrass soul and demonstrate a mastery of imaginative creativity. Savannah Blue approaches music with high spirits and boundless energy refusing to sit still. Savannah Blue’s signature sound stems from their emphasis on original material, inspired by each member’s influences. Savannah Blue consists of: Gary Kaye, banjo; Dore Coller, guitar and lead vocals; Dave Hanks, mandolin-vocals; Steve Kallai, fiddle-vocals; and Dan Large on bass. (See them on the Boppin’ Bolinas Stage from 10 am to noon.)
