As President Barack Obama announces new executive action on gun control, U.S. gun manufacturing is a growth industry, almost doubling since the beginning of Obama Administration (5.6 million in 2009; 10.9 million in 2013). From 2001 to 2013, according to a Centers of Disease Control and Prevention report, 406,496 Americans were killed with firearms on U.S. soil. In contrast, the number of U.S. citizens killed by terrorists at home or abroad over the same years number 3,380. Chicago suffered a spike in gun homicides in 2015 with 470 homicides and 2,939 shooting victims, the worst of all U.S. cities. Studies show a clear correlation: the more guns, the more homicides and the more people shot. Cities are racked by gun violence, yet gun ownership is much more prevalent in rural areas, as vividly displayed by the Bundy bunch that occupied an Oregon wildlife refuge over the weekend. According to a General Social Survey report, gun ownership is declining. About 35 percent of adults were estimated to live in a household with a firearm in 2014, down from over half in the early 1980s. As hunting has declined in the country, so has gun ownership. Gun ownership is higher among whites than among blacks or Hispanics, higher among men than women. Gun ownership rises with income. It is higher among those earning more than $90,000 a year than among those earning less than $25,000. It is highest in the South Central U.S. and lowest in the Northeast and Pacific regions. Now weapons designed for the purpose of mass killing in war are available for purchase at gun shows, online and at many gun stores. These weapons are powerful enough to stop trains or strafe planes that are landing or taking off. These are tools for terrorists, easily available for sale in America.

Obama has already delivered 15 national statements after shocking incidents of gun violence. Yet no national reforms have been passed — or even gotten much consideration. After the Charleston massacre, the Economist magazine compared mass shooting in the U.S. with the grotesque air pollution in China: a horrible health hazard which the country appears incapable of addressing. Gun control doesn’t cost much. America has another abiding challenge — the explosive catastrophe of urban poverty — that also goes unmet. The City Observatory, an urban policy think tank in Portland, Ore., reports that the number of highpoverty urban neighborhoods in the nation’s 51 largest cities tripled — to 3,100 — between 1970 and 2010. The number of poor persons living in those areas doubled over those years. The poor are more isolated and concentrated than ever. AfricanAmericans and Hispanics suffer the highest rates of poverty — and are the most isolated into separate and unequal neighborhoods. Twenty percent of U.S. children lived in poverty by end of 2013; poverty among African-American children was nearly twice that (38 percent). To deal with our impoverished neighborhoods, it isn’t enough to get rid of the guns. The public squalor of our inner cities has to be addressed: schools modernized, affordable housing built, mass transit supplied, available jobs created. Dealing with entrenched poverty costs real money, but less than we spend on the police, jails, drugs, alcoholism, and chronic illness — the dysfunction that comes from poverty. Today’s politicians don’t want to spend political capital on guns or fiscal capital on poverty. They’d rather pay more on the back end from failing to act than risk the up-front political and economic costs of dealing with the problems. So the war on guns is lost; the war on poverty abandoned. And the hopes of millions are dashed by that failure. In the circus of the current presidential campaign, these are two fundamental challenges that ought to be at the center of our debate.

The Transformative Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., in 2016 By Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. There is no debate concerning the irrefutable fact that The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the greatest leaders recognized, admired and affirmed by millions of people across America and throughout the world. King’s activism and leadership changed America and the world, as did Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela in their respective global impacts. As we prepare to celebrate the 87th birthday of Dr. King as part the official federal holiday celebrations, I believe it is very important to focus on how Dr King’s legacy today is still relevant and transformative for all people who cry out for freedom, justice, equality and empowerment. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a devoted man of faith and a committed freedom fighter for the establishment and building of “The Beloved Community.” Dr. King was clear about the ultimate goal of the Civil Rights Movement. His vision went beyond changing laws and winning victories against the forces of injustice and repression. Social change for Dr. King was not an abstraction or just a dream or an unreachable goal, but it was a realistic, achievable and tangible outcome of the struggle for freedom and equality: “The Beloved Community” In his own words, King emphasized, “The nonviolent resister must often express his protest through noncooperation or boycotts, but noncooperation and boycotts are not ends themselves; they are merely means to awaken a sense of moral shame in the opponent. The end is redemption and reconciliation. The aftermath of nonviolence is the creation of the beloved community, while the aftermath of violence is tragic bitterness.” Today, in the bold tradition of Martin Luther King, Jr., we salute the Black Lives Matter movement. It is being led by young, gifted, talented and courageous activists, who are using nonviolent civil disobedience anew to challenge racial injustice and the wanton police violence and murders that have become too frequent against Black Americans and others. But today we must also assert in King’s transformative tradition that “All Black Lives Matter!” In other words, yes we have to stand up effectively against police brutality and prosecutorial misconduct. Yes, we urgently have to reform the criminal justice system in its totality. Yet, we must also stand up effectively with our activism to stop the self-destructive violence and murders that too many of us perpetrate on each other in our own families and communities. In principle and in faith, the truth is we have to be against all forms of violence and all forms of the destruction of humanity. There is no justification to take the life of another human being. It would be a gross contradiction to everything Dr. King worked and sacrificed for if we remained silent about the surge in self-destructive gun violence that prevails today in too many of our communities. Reconciliation for Dr. King was not reconciling or compromising to leave injustice or racial bigotry in place. However reconciliation was the active and involved process that resulted in specific social transformation that inured

benefits to all people. The success of the Civil Rights Movement under Dr. King’s leadership not only benefited Black America, but also the success of this movement for change provided benefits to all people. King never suspended his faith in the God of justice and liberation. He refused to bend his principles and beliefs on the effectiveness of nonviolent social change activism and multiracial movement building. The organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) by Dr. King and other Black church leaders was a prophetic step forward that kept the Black church in America at the forefront of the battle for civil rights and human rights. King was an intellectual genius who stood on the universal theological principles of the oneness of God and the oneness of all humanity. In my younger years, I personally worked with Dr. King, Golden Frinks and Milton Fitch in the North Carolina SCLC. I witnessed firsthand how Dr. King transformed and inspired the consciousness of people to believe and exert a grassroots power to promote social change. We could use that kind of grassroots power today to get a massive voter turnout. Dr. King was not a “weak” leader who sought to appease or to entertain the powerful in the high places and principalities of oppression. Martin Luther King, Jr. was in complete solidarity with the poor and marginalized, but yet determined to end poverty and injustice wherever those evils were manifested. Thus, we should also revisit Dr. King’s economic justice demands. It is my opinion that if Dr. King were alive today he would be encouraging “principled youth entrepreneurial development.” Participating in the U.S. economy as business owners that help to financially sustain our communities should be a priority. In his last public speech on April 3, 1968 on the night before his tragic assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, without fear Dr King asserted, “The nation is sick; trouble is in the land, confusion all around…But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. And I see God working in this period of the twentieth century. Something is happening in our world. The masses of people are rising up. And wherever they are assembled today, whether they are in Johannesburg, South Africa; Nairobi, Kenya; Accra, Ghana; New York City; Atlanta, Georgia; Jackson, Mississippi; or Memphis, Tennessee, the cry is always the same: ‘We want to be free.’” In 2016, “We want to be free!” We want an end to racial injustice and all manifestations of inequity and inequality. But we realize from the living legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. that we all should remain vigilant and active. Let’s keep Dr. King’s transformative legacy alive and vibrant with renewed energy and support. Dr. Benjamin F. CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS The Village WORD for the Week By Rev. Frank Jackson, Jr. God Morning Family!!! ***GOOD NEWS*** ***Pace News and The Village Has Joined Forces*** !!!HAPPY NEW YEAR FAMILY!!! “Maybe God will work for us.” FOR 2016 – FIRST THINGS FIRST!

“Hallowed be thy name.” (Mt 6:9 KJV) At the dedication service for their baby boy a young wife told the pastor, “My husband wants to name him after his dad, but I want to name him after mine.” The pastor said, “What’s your dad’s name?” “Joseph,” she replied. “What’s your husband’s father’s name?” he asked. “Joseph,” she replied again. “Then what’s the problem?” The husband replied, “Well, her dad’s a criminal and mine’s a Christian. How will people know which one he’s named after?” The pastor said, “That’s easy. Call him Joseph and see which one he turns out to be like. That way everybody will know whose name he carries.” Jesus taught us to pray, “Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (vs. 9-10). How do we honor God’s name? By doing His will on earth. Saint Francis once took a young monk with him to preach in town. But when they arrived they just chatted with vendors and talked to people on the street. Returning home, the novice asked Saint Francis why they hadn’t preached. He replied, “People listened; they observed our attitude and behavior. That was our message.” Paul writes: “Take care of…business…do your…work…then people who are not believers will respect you” (1Th 4:11-12 NCV). That means ensuring that your STEPS matches your talk, that you truly care about others, that you’re not cheating on your spouse or your income taxes, that you’re paying your bills on time, that you’re not short-changing your employer. Peter writes: “Serve one another” (1Pe 5:5 GNT). It’s one thing to call yourself a Christian, it’s entirely another when those who know you best, agree! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: “THE DECISIONS YOU MAKE IS THE DIRECTION YOU’LL TAKE.”

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS New U.S. Diet Rules Would Take 20 Percent Bite Out of American Sugar Use By Chris Prentice NEW YORK—If the U.S. government has its way, Americans would cut their consumption of sugar and corn syrup by more than 2 million tonnes a year, the latest blow for a sweetener industry facing an onslaught of criticism over negative health effects. The U.S. government on Thursday issued new dietary guidelines that suggested for the first time that consumers limit their consumption of added sweeteners at a specific level, less than 10 percent of a recommended daily intake of about 2,000 calories. Currently the average American consumes about 270 calories a day in the form of sweeteners, equal to about 13 percent, the guidelines said. With one teaspoon of sugar equal to approximately 15 calories, a reduction equivalent to more than 60 calories worth of added sugars - over 20 percent fewer than the average American consumes today - would amount to some 2.2 million tonnes of pri-

That figure may be conservative. The USDA estimates total national sweetener demand by food and beverage manufacturers at around 19 million tonnes. On that basis, a reduction of a roughly 20-percent drop in sugar calories consumed could amount

Skirting Cancer By Dean L. Jones, CPM Progressively more and more capable science confidently predicts that cancer diseases will go from a catastrophic illness to a manageable chronic health condition by using immunotherapy. Although not the first patient to benefit, President Jimmy Carter was diagnosed with brain and liver cancer last year where he immediately underwent immunotherapy treatment and today his cancer is responding well and the disease has not spread further. This is without question good news to potentially no longer having to suppose cancer as the end. Nonetheless, depending whether it is caught early enough to treat and of course having adequate medical insurance remains a huge part of the problem surrounding cancer cures. Ideally, the thing is not to have to deal with any cancer disease at all, where fortunately a considerable amount of information is being uncovered on ways to do so. For instance, excessive consumption of simple table sugar found in nearly every kitchen in America may increase the risk of breast cancer. Additionally, excessive sugar metabolizes in the liver, which can turn into a dangerous fatty buildup that increases cancer risks. Few consumers want to accept that sugar is an inflammatory, and inflammation is part of the problem in breast cancer and when sizeable amounts of sugar reaches the mammary gland a tumor can easily develop. The research on this condition adds that overt sucrose or fructose intake also contributes to an increased risk of cancer spreading to the lungs. The science on this is old news, but due to the advancement with effective cancer treatments it appears that more information is being released on how we can actually avoid ever contracting cancer by eating better. Routinely you are hearing that moderate processed sugar consumption is critical, particularly how heavy consumption of sugarsweetened beverages is a significant contributor to the worldwide epidemics of obesity, heart disease and cancer.

Dean L. Jones In cancer treatment, a spoonful of sugar does NOT help the medicine go down due in part that cancer cells have receptors (insulin growth factors), which are used to spread cancer. To exemplify, drinking just three sugar-sweetened beverages a week can cause considerable breast density that makes it difficult to see tumors on mammograms, a major factor toward increasing the risk of permitting breast cancer to go undetected. Sweet product advertisements and women are commonly placed together. Particularly when it comes to selling products related to chocolate, cereal, cake, ice cream, and sugar-sweetened beverage, the ads reflect a propensity to exclusively showcase women indulging with energetic joy. Processed sugar is added to foodstuff as an ingredient in a large variety of names including fructose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, glucose, and dextrose, thereby making it extremely difficult to fully avoid eating it hidden in foodstuff. Nonetheless, making an effort to skirt cancer is a vital component for staying healthy from living SugarAlert! www.SugarAlert.com Dean is a marketing strategist with the Southland Partnership Corporation (a public benefit organization), sharing his view on mismanagement practices of packaged foods & beverages.

to 3.7 million tonnes - small relative to worldwide use of over 186 million tonnes, but still more than enough to meet the entire needs of Egypt. To be sure, many people including health advocates point out that few Americans are expected to follow the new guide-

lines. But even the suggestion of such a significant decline is bad news for an industry engulfed in a "war on sugar" as health advocates blame sweeteners for a national obesity crisis. And a deeper decline in demand from the one of the world's top five users could weigh on global sugar prices that have fallen by half in five years. That would be a major blow not just for soda companies and candy makers, but for sugar and corn companies like privately held ASR Group - the maker of Domino Sugar - Archer Daniels Midland Co (ADM.N) and Cargill Inc [CARG.UL] battling in an already competitive sweetener market. Americans have been buying markedly less sugar amid the rising health worries. While total demand for sweeteners is rising, per capita consumption is on the decline. The Sugar Association, which represents sugar companies including ASR and Louis Dreyfus Commodities' [AKIRAU.UL] Imperial Sugar Co, criticized the

guidelines, saying they were based on "weak science." A spokesman for the Corn Refiners Association said the group intended to review the document with scientific authorities. Cargill "continues to regularly work with many of its food customers to develop ways to reduce the amount of added sugars in food and beverages," a company spokesperson said. Cargill and others have moved into no- and low-calorie sweetener alternatives like stevia. The American Beverage Association said reducing beverage calories is a "common goal," noting its members have been cutting product sizes. Even so, the move is expected to lay groundwork for the U.S. government's initiative to add more information on sugars on food labels. LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS Black Insurance Contractors Set to Make Hundreds of Millions in 2016 By McKenzie Jackson/ California Black Media Things are looking up for African-American contracting firms that do business with the insurance industry in California. From 2013 to 2014 alone, insurance companies purchased a total of $330 million in goods and services from them. The proof is in a survey released by the California Department of Insurance in November. In 2013, industry giants such as Allstate Insurance Company and Farmers Insurance Group of California, along with another 226 companies, spent a combined total of $154 million in contracts awarded to Black-owned businesses. In 2014, they spent an even higher amount: $173 million. The goods and services insurers procured from Black businesses included advertising, legal, office supplies, information technology, real estate, and more. Dave Jones, Commissioner of the California Department of Insurance, said those numbers signal much improvement. Although they are higher than they’ve ever been in the 148-year history of the agency, his office hopes to see those dollar amounts increase even more in the future. “The good news is we are seeing some growth in insurance industry procurement, but we need to see more progress,” he said. “The numbers are still lower than where I think they should be. Every year, individuals and firms in California pay close to $260 million in premiums to insurers. State law requires certain types of insur-

ance, including automobile, health and worker’s compensation. During its annual Insurance Diversity Summit in November at Cal StateSacramento, the insurance department released results of its 2015 Insurer Supplier Diversity Survey. The state’s largest consumer protection agency organized the event to help increase recruitment of diverse vendors. The 23-page study revealed that last year insurers procured a total of $1.52 billion in goods and services from companies owned by Californians who are women, disabled, veterans, minorities, and LGBT. That’s a $587 million increase since 2012. Assembly Bill 53, legislation signed into law in 2012, helps to ensure diverse businesses get more opportunities in the insurance industry. It requires each insurer with premiums written equal to or in excess of $100 million to provide the insurance commissioner a report on its minority business procurement efforts. While the law helps with accountability, a lot of work still remains for AfricanAmerican and other diverse businesses who want to secure contracts. Insurance procurement expert Melanie Shelby of the Oakland-based insurance diversity firm Gray, Greer, Shelby & Vaughn has some advice. “It’s not enough just to know the supplier diversity person,” said Shelby. “Typically they aren’t in the position to understand the buying decision. By the time the supplier diversity person is involved, someone else with the company is already buying

services.” Shelby, who is also the vice chair of the insurance department’s Insurance Diversity Taskforce, says advocacy agencies like Chambers of Commerces for specific communities have a role to play, too. “The carriers don’t always articulate what they need,” said Shelby, who is also a Black business owner. “[Advocacy groups] need to work in partnership with the insurance carriers and say, ‘Hey what are the needs inside your supply chain? Who are the suppliers you work with? What is a profile of the type of supplier you would need?’ Answering those questions, she says, prepare diverse firms to apply for open contracts. African-American business owner Sharon Evans tells her peers to register their businesses with the state. “You can’t do business

if you aren’t registered and certified,” said the President and CEO of Business Resource Group in Hawthorne. . The registration process needs to be streamlined, though, says Shelby. She believes if state legislators clarify the registration guidelines mandated by AB 53, more diverse businesses would sign up. For Shelby, one important opportunity for growth stood out in the insurance department report. Of all the insurance companies in the state, only five of them - Allstate, Anthem Blue Cross, Kaiser Permanente, Massachusetts Mutual, and United Healthcare Insurance Company – accounted for $1.1 billion in contracts awarded to diverse suppliers in 2014. The other 200-plus insurers in the state only offered $400 million in business to Black-owned firms. “If you have five firms doing $1.1 billion, imag-

ine if you added another five to 10 to that mix,” she said. “It would be wonderful to see more carriers create opportunities to partner with diverse firms.” At the summit, Insurance department diversity coordinator Naveen Habib said, insurers see benefits for doing business with minority suppliers. “They say, ‘It is important to build these relationships because we are going to be in these communities and sell in these communities,’” she said. “Our goals are to open doors for you.” Shelby reminded insurers that having diverse suppliers goes beyond just a partnership between the two parties. “When you partner with a diverse firm, they hire locally,” she said. “They are helping reinvest dollars. It is greater than saying, ‘I have some black and brown faces in my supply chain.”

NEWS Will Ferrell, Mia Hamm Garciaparra and Other Los Angeles Football Club Owners Join Mayor Eric Garcetti to Reveal Official Crest and New Club Colors LOS ANGELES – Today, scores of energized fans of the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) gathered at Union Station and joined Will Ferrell, Mia Hamm Garciaparra, Nomar Garciaparra, sports and entertainment legend Peter Guber, businessman Henry Nguyen, and other key club owners, elected officials and city leaders for the official unveiling of the new team’s crest and colors. “Today is a historic day for LAFC,” said soccer legend and LAFC owner Mia Hamm Garciaparra. “Unveiling our crest is a significant milestone event that brings us one step closer to playing on our home turf in 2018. We are thrilled to unveil an iconic and timeless symbol that reinforces the link between LAFC and our community.” Ferrell, a passionate sports fan and native Southern Californian, is the latest addition to an ownership group that contains leaders in sports, entertainment and business. He has been a strong supporter of U.S. Soccer, and even made a surprise appearance in Brazil to pump up fans cheer on the US Men’s National Team in the 2014 World Cup. “This is not a joke,” Ferrell told hundreds of cheering LAFC supporters at the crest unveiling in Union Station on Thursday. “I grew up playing soccer on the mean streets of Irvine, California starting when I was eight years old,” Ferrell said. “I continue to play club soccer, our three boys all play soccer, my wife played soccer at Pomona. To say that soccer is a big part of our lives is

an understatement, and I’m proud to be a member of this wonderful ownership group.” "We are thrilled to welcome Will to our diverse and dedicated team. Will's passion for sports and his authentic connection to Los Angeles make him a perfect coowner of LAFC, " said Club Managing Partner and Owner, Henry Nguyen. Hundreds of LAFC supporters filled Union Station to rally behind LA’s newest professional sports team. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and other elected officials joined the team’s ownership to unveil the new Club crest and colors which culminated with the debut of a new video explaining the origin of the LAFC crest and colors. The design of the official crest and colors reflects the rich history and vitality of Los Angeles. Through extensive planning, collaboration, and dialogue with LAFC supporters, the result is a black and gold crest incorporating the iconic “LA”, the universally celebrated abbreviation for Los Angeles, the Wing which represents the City of Angels and symbolizes power and mobility, and four blades on the wing that represent the pillars of the Club and the city’s founding on September 4th. The outline of the crest is derived from the Seal of the City of Los Angeles. The typeface used in the logo design is Art Deco inspired. Elegant and versatile, it is a nod to the rich history of iconic architecture found throughout Downtown Los

Angeles dating back to city expansion in the 1920’s. The Club colors, black and gold, were chosen to represent the success, urban texture and glamour of Los Angeles, with a “flash” of red to represent the Club is in the heart of Los Angeles. "Today is a milestone for our city and for soccer fans throughout Los Angeles,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “The rich L.A. history woven into this team’s crest and colors demonstrates the Los Angeles Football Club’s commitment to representing our great city with pride. I can’t wait to see them out on the field.” “It is important that we have in this ownership group a deep commitment to our city. This team wants to grow with Los Angeles and takes its civic responsibility very seriously,” said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Second District, County of Los Angeles and President of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission. “LAFC has shown

that commitment with its desire to build a new home in the heart of Los Angeles – the heart of my District where I have championed the redevelopment and revitalization of Exposition Park for many years.” “It is important for us to pay homage to our city’s history and to the beautiful game, while we embrace the creativity and constant evolution that Los Angeles is known for globally,” added Nguyen. “We made a commitment to Los Angeles to build a winning Club, to increase a growing enthusiasm for the world’s game, and to deliver an exceptional experience to our supporters. We look forward to sharing this journey with the people of our city.” “We were influenced by the city’s energy and creativity when we worked to design the crest,” said Executive Chairman and Owner, Peter Guber. “It was a thoughtful process and I am passionate about our design and deep connection it has to Los Angeles and its people.” “The new LAFC brand perfectly represents the energy and passion of ownership's grand vision for their new club,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “I look forward to LAFC debuting in 2018 and beginning their rivalry with the LA Galaxy.” “As a born and raised Angeleno, it brings me much pride and joy to see that LAFC has found a way to connect our past to our future,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Curren D. Price, Jr. who represents the 9th Council District

that includes the site of the future stadium. “Soccer is a universal language and there is no doubt in my mind that the excitement we are seeing, hearing, and feeling today is only the beginning of what’s to come. Soccer fever has hit Los Angeles and it is here to stay!” Later this evening over a thousand fans, original ticket holders, professional sports figures, city officials and celebrities will attend a fanfare showcasing the Club’s new identity. Attendees will be the first to have the opportunity to live the LAFC experience with Limited Edition Club merchandise, immersive entertainment and music, as well as culinary selections from LA’s diverse dining scene. Earlier this year, LAFC announced its intent to build a new stadium in Downtown Los Angeles, at the site of the current Los Angeles Sports Arena. The new development, which will be funded by $250 million in private investment, will be anchored by a new 22,000-seat, soccer-specific stadium. LAFC’s 25-member ownership group includes businessman and Club Managing Partner Henry Nguyen, international soccer club owners Vincent Tan and Ruben Gnanalingam, U.S. World Cup superstar Mia Hamm Garciaparra, NBA and Los Angeles legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Actor Will Ferrell, MLB All-Star Nomar Garciaparra, sports and entertainment mogul Peter Guber, and Club President Tom Penn.

NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Sac County Trustee Opposes Charter School Focused On Minority Student Achievement By Manny Otiko From California Black Media Harold Fong, a Sacramento County School Board Trustee, led a spirited challenge against the continued funding of the Fortune School. He voiced his disagreement during the board’s monthly meeting held December 15. The focus of the publicly funded Fortune School is narrowing the achievement gap between Black and Latino stu-

dents with that of children of all other races. Fong’s objections did not, however, persuade the other board members from supporting 6-1 the renewal of the college prep school’s charter. He cast the lone “no” vote. “I don’t think that’s where we want to go with the education of our kids. Children have to be able to function in a multicultural society,” said Fong, who represents neighbor-

Fong says his decision to not support the Fortune School stems from his belief that the school’s mostly Black and Latino enrollment does not reflect the racial diversity of the surrounding community. Fong argued that the racial make-up of Fortune’s student body is akin to segregation and encourages social fragmentation. Founded by Margaret Fortune, who is also CEO of the School network, Fortune School is a K-12 educational system with five campuses in Sacramento and San Bernardino counties. “We are proud to be of service to the Sacramento community,” Fortune said during her presentation. She added that the school values its role as a trusted education partner in the community. According to Margaret Fortune, in 2017, the

school plans to add a new high school campus that will partner with the local community college system to allow students to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree. “We anticipate this will be a destination for students throughout the region looking for a pathway to college,” says Fortune. Responding to Fong’s concern about racial diversity, Trustee Jacquelyn Levy said data reflected that Fortune’s student body is actually 61 percent Black, 23 percent Latino and 16 percent from all other races. “That’s not a segregated school,” she said. “95 percent is a segregated school.” Board President Eleanor L. Brown said she doesn’t look at Fortune as a segregated school either. In her view, it is more of a “specialized” education institution offering local students an alternative. She said a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for all students

and schools with a unique educational focus better serve some young people. “We need this flexibility in our system,” Brown said. “It’s an opportunity to meet an education need that is not presently being met.” Board vice president Thomaysa M. Glover said the school doesn’t target students based on their race. She said it serves children who felt their academic needs were not being met in the public school system. “It’s not about what race they are, but their (educational) deficiency,” Glover said. Jody Johnson, a Fortune parent who also works in the public school system says he gets to see close-up the challenges of educating Black students. “One of the comments was made about segregation,” he said. “But the true segregation is the failure of preparing our young Black students for higher education.”

ART&ENTERTAINMENT NEWS Prosecutor Declines to Charge Cosby Over Allegations by 2 Women By Steve Gorman From Reuters The Los Angeles County district attorney has declined to bring criminal charges against comedian Bill Cosby stemming from sexual assault allegations by two women over separate incidents, one dating back to 1965 and the other to 2008, prosecutors said on Wednesday. The district attorney, Jackie Lacey, determined prosecution was barred in the earlier case by the statute of limitations and in the latter case by insufficient evidence for a felony charge and the statute of limitations for misdemeanors, her office said in a statement. The Los Angeles ruling, which does not name the two accusers, comes a week after Cosby was criminally charged in Pennsylvania with sexually assaulting a woman in his home near Philadelphia after plying her with drugs and alcohol in 2004. The woman in the earlier Los Angeles case said she was 17 when the alleged assault occurred. The woman in the later case said she was 18 at the time of the alleged rape. The women in both cases said Cosby plied them with alcohol. The Pennsylvania case, filed just before the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution in that state was due to lapse, stems from allegations by a former Temple University employee, Andrea Constand, who settled a civil case against Cosby for an undisclosed sum in 2006. The Pennsylvania case marked the first and only criminal charged brought against the once-

“Call JOE When You’re Ready To Go!” Actor and comedian Bill Cosby with his attorney, Monique Pressley. beloved entertainer whose fatherfigure persona has been marred by dozens of similar accusations, some dating back decades. Cosby, best known for playing Doctor Cliff Huxtable, the family patriarch in the longrunning hit television sitcom "The Cosby Show," has acknowledged marital infidelity but has denied any allegations of sexual misconduct. "We are satisfied that the Los Angeles D.A.'s Office fully and fairly evaluated all the facts and evidence, and came to the right conclusion," Cosby's legal team said in a statement. Los Angeles County prosecutors, citing the statute of limitations, previously declined to bring a criminal case in connection with a woman who reported she was molested at age 15 by Cosby at the Playboy Mansion in 1974. The accuser in the most recent complaint investigated by the district attorney said she, too,

was sexually assaulted at the Playboy Mansion, during a party there in the summer of 2008, after Cosby served her an alcoholic beverage that made her dizzy and escorted her to an upstairs bedroom to lie down. The woman, who was 18 at the time, told investigators she awoke to find her clothes off, her breasts moist as if they had been licked and Cosby at the foot of the bed biting her toe as he appeared to be masturbating. Prosecutors said they were unable to substantiate that Cosby or his accuser attended the party in question, nor could they corroborate her account with a friend whom the woman identified as a potential witness. In the earlier case, the woman, then 17, reported she was raped by Cosby after he had plied her with alcohol at a Hollywood jazz club, according to prosecutors.
