Open Data, análogo al del software y la cultura libre, ha ido creciendo y sumando apoyos cada vez más notables, por encima de dificultades y obstáculos. Los argumentos a favor de la apertura de grandes bases de datos incluyen desde la necesidad de evitar que se privaticen datos que por definición no deberían tener dueño, cómo las secuencias del genoma y datos medioambientales básicos, hasta la percepción más general de que los hechos no tienen propiedad intelectual. Facilitar el uso de datos procedentes de investigaciones financiadas con dinero público, o poder usar y reelaborar recursos de información tan fundamentales como los cartográficos, son algunas de las reclamaciones de las iniciativas pro Open Data.
