The Owasso Chamber is the voice of the business community. We take our lobbying efforts to Tulsa County, the state capitol, and to the halls of congress in Washington, D.C. Our major objectives include: Transportation corridor expansion, educational advancements, economic development, job creation, retail and professional sector growth, and supporting regional growth.
It has been my honor to serve as the 2016 chairman the Owasso Chamber of Commerce. I am proud of our community spirit and our dedication to quality growth. I am very appreciative of today’s leaders, and so thankful for the wisdom and vision of past generations. Today, Owasso is Oklahoma’s thirteenth largest city. We are the home to Oklahoma’s fourth largest public school system and in August 2016, we celebrated at the dedication of the new $50 million Rejoice Christian School campus. Just over three years ago, we celebrated the opening of Tulsa Tech-Owasso Campus and Conference Center and welcomed Tulsa Community College to the campus. Downtown Owasso, A New Vision
Owasso has experienced exceptional growth over the past 25-years. Our population has grown nearly 400 percent during that timeframe, placing us among the fastest growing cities in Oklahoma. Our retail offerings and restaurant expansions have been phenomenal and have addressed the desires of a growing public. Our numerous residential developments are beautiful, widespread and multi-faceted. Additionally, our quality educational offerings, professional services, and church expansions have had a tremendous impact on our quality of life. However, a very important question remains unanswered. With the successful growth pattern of Owasso, is there any section of our city that has been left behind, or just overlooked? Many say yes, and that section is our historic downtown. Owasso, and other vibrant cities throughout Oklahoma, have come to realize that during dynamic growth periods, their historic downtown districts may not have kept pace. So today, to recapture the hometown spirit, communities are experiencing an increased desire to revitalize their downtown areas. Owasso’s goal is to promote a unique, fun-filled, gathering place with entertainment, restaurants, quaint shopping and residential offerings. For this type of movement to occur, there are always visionary people who step
12 Lifestyle Owasso Magazine 2016-2017
to the forefront with leadership, passion, and the willingness to take the financial risks necessary to make it happen. Allow us to introduce you to such a couple.
Steve and Renee’ Mowery were both raised in Owasso and graduated from Owasso High School. They first met in the summer of 1978, when Steve was working after school at Owasso Drug store on the corner of 76th St. & Main, in downtown Owasso. Steve was a sophomore and Renee’ was in the eighth grade. Renee’ would visit her mom who worked at the drug store, and her visits certainly garnered Steve’s attention. Two years later they started dating, and in February, 1986, they were married. They are the parents of two grown children, Brooke and Grant, both graduates of Owasso High School. In 1983, Steve started his
professional career working in a Bartlesville funeral home. Then in 1985, he joined his father, John, in the Owasso based Mowery Funeral Service. In 2003, Steve purchased the business from his father. Three years ago, Grant Mowery joined his father in the family owned business. Renee’ has been successful in her career as a para-legal and in various venues of real estate development. In 2012, she opened The Suites at Bella Dea, in Owasso. This is a modern salon concept consisting of 12 suites designed for hair stylists, nail techs, massage therapists, and estheticians. Steve and Renee’ are committed to Owasso and in reestablishing the spirit of downtown that brought them together 38 years ago. Steve stated that, “vision without action is nothing.” Their 26,000 s/f facility is visionary. It will feature a restaurant in the anchor corner position--with outdoor seating, a courtyard patio, retail shopping, and residential lofts. Construction bids have been issued and building should commence in early 2017. The Mowery’s community roots run deep and their love for Owasso is unquestionable. Thanks for investing in your hometown.

Owasso City Hall administrators and staff recently moved into their new, beautifully designed, location in downtown Owasso. The official open house celebration occurred on November 18, 2016. The new city hall is now located in the former First Bank of Owasso building located on the corner of 76th St. North and Main. While the actual move was only three blocks in distance, the impact will be dramatic. The 2-story structure is nearly 28,000 s/f in size
and will initially accommodate approximately 50 city employees. The internal configuration of the building was completely redesigned to promote internal efficiencies and to provide the highest level of customer service. The building, and adjacent property, will allow for decades of community growth and business expansion. The Owasso City Council and city administrators are to be commended for a wise fiscal decision. The previous city hall location was built in 2001, and served as the home of the city hall and the Owasso police department. Owasso has experienced remarkable growth during the past 15-years. In recent years, it became very apparent that the facility just wasn't large enough to

Since 2001, the Owasso Police Department has been located inside city hall. The space has never really been adequate in size to serve the needs of our police administration, officers, and staff. Well, the good news is that’s about to change. With the relocation of Owasso’s city hall to its new location at 76th St. North & Main, the Owasso

The Chief of Police, Scott Chambless, welcomes the additional space. He said, “the department has expanded over the years to serve the needs of a growing population. Currently, there are 57 sworn staff and an additional 23 nonsworn personnel. Recently, three or four detectives have been working out of a single office. Now, each detective will be working from a private office. This will promote greater efficiency for police personnel and will enhance confidentiality with the citizenry. What could have cost tens of millions of dollars to construct a new city hall and police station, has been reduced to approximatively $6-7 million. The results are terrific. Owasso has a new, modern, city hall and the Owasso police department will be able to utilize the entire 26,000 s/f space previously occupied by city hall. modest private office spaces.” Chief Chambles also stated that, “the dispatcher area will be expanded. The dispatchers are currently in a very small room and handle all of the emergency calls for the police, fire, and ambulance service. Additionally, it is very beneficial to have additional storage space for short term and long term evidence. We’ll also be able to enlarge and modernize our property rooms. Finally, the additional space will provide for professional training, seminars, and business oriented meetings. We’re excited about our new space and the efficiencies that will be possible.” Congratulation on your expanded location. Thanks for your service! owassochamber.com

Dedication Ceremony August 26, 2016 was indeed a glorious day in the history of Rejoice Christian Schools. It was the day chosen to have the official dedication of the new Rejoice Middle School and High School campus. Oklahoma Lt. Governor Todd Lamb was the keynote speaker and welcomed former U.S. Senator Tom Coburn and financial contributor, Eddy Gibbs, along with many other church, political, and business leaders. Last year, a similar dedication took place to celebrate the opening of the Rejoice Elementary School. Now the entire school is operating
from its new single campus location near 106th St. North and 129th E. Ave. The $50 million campus resides on a beautiful 60-acre track of property. The total square footage of the entire rejoice campus is near 260,000 s/f and is the home to nearly 1000 students, pre-school-12th grade. The new facility will allow the student population to grow to 1,500. This year, growth was limited to 12%. The average class size is 18 students. Rejoice Schools started in 1992 as a pre-school and kindergarten at the Rejoice Church location on
106th St. N. just west of U.S. 169. In 2008, the school opened a location on 86th St. North for grades 6-12th. In 2009, Rejoice Christion Schools graduated its first senior class. Rejoice is one of the largest private schools in Oklahoma, with one of the lowest tuition cost, and an increasing enrollment. Quality educational opportunities are the number one reason why families choose to make Owasso their home. With Rejoice Christian Schools expanded campus, Owasso is better able to serve the educational needs of a growing population.

The Vietnam Wall Memorial The Wall that Heals
Owasso Appearance Oct 13-16, 2016
Owasso was honored to host
The Wall That Heals, a 250-ft replica of the Vietnam Wall Memorial located in Washington, DC. The National Wall Memorial receives over four million visitors each year making it the most visited memorial in our Nation’s Capitol. While In Owasso for four days, October 13-16, The Wall that Heals had over 10,000 visitors placing our city in the top five venues in America this year. The Wall that Heals was erected on the beautiful grounds of Tulsa Tech-Owasso Campus. The Wall stands as a symbol of America's honor and recognition of the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. Inscribed on the Wall are the names of 58,315 men and women who gave their lives or remain missing. The Memorial itself is dedicated to honor the "courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty and country" of all who answered the call to serve during the longest war in U.S. history. The replica Wall is erected in a chevron-shape and is made up facebook.com/owassochamber
of 24 individual panels, each containing six columns of names. As on the Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, the names are listed alphabetically by day of casualty. Beginning at the center apex, the names start on the East Wall (right hand side) working their way out to the end of the wing picking up again at the end of the West Wall (left-hand side) and working their way back in to the center apex. Thus, the beginning and ending of the conflict are joined at the center, signifying an epoch in American history. The Wall that Heals is transported from community to community by a 53-ft, fifth wheel trailer with cases built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center that tells the story of the Vietnam War.
Kim Turner Organizer Our sincere thanks to Kim Turner, pre-AP English teacher at Owasso High School, for her vision, dedication, and determination in bringing the Memorial Wall to Owasso. Also, thanks to the Owasso VFW, the students of the Owasso Mid-High, and to the many volunteers and corporate sponsors who made this event possible. Lifestyle Owasso Magazine 2016-2017

- Major Expansion Complete A $42.5 million road project on U.S. 169 was completed in October, 2016, four months ahead of schedule. The project expanded a section of U.S. 169 to 6-lanes for 1.2 miles north of 56th St. North. The historic Bird Creek twin bridges, built in 1960, along with six other bridges in the section, were replaced. The primary purpose of the project was to enhance safety along the corridor and facilitate traffic flow.

Our thanks to U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, Chairman of the Environment & Public Works Committee, for his long-term dedication to this project. Additionally, our sincere thanks to Oklahoma Transportation Secretary Gary Ridley and ODOT Director Mike Patterson for their support and involvement. We’ll continue to lobby for funding to widen U.S. 169 all the way to state highway 20. The next step will be to expand the current bridge at 76th St. North to 6-lanes, then commence the widening of U.S. 169 from 66th St. North beyond the 76th St. North interchange.

CELEBRATING
Excellence is a Choice
a belief that the smallest gestures make the greatest difference. At Brookdale we know it’s often the little things that mean the most, such as a thoughtful reminder a resident’s favorite show is about to start or a dash of cinnamon added to coffee just the way it’s liked. We believe personalized care is part of aging well. Here, you’ll find it’s also what makes our care truly unique. To see the difference yourself, call (918) 948-6180 or email sthaxton@brookdale.com.

Fuel
for Healthy Relationships
Promoting Character & Community The Owasso Character Council exists to pr omote character within our community. The Council strives to strengthen the values of Owasso residents, families, and businesses. This is done each month by emphasizing one of forty-nine defined character traits. A joint effort has been created between the City of Owasso, the business sector, the faith community, and school systems, to promote and encourage excellence in character. Character is the foundation of every right choice. It is the fuel for healthy relationships. It influences an individual and defines a community. Character strengthens business and helps the economy to grow. It adds lasting value that affects every aspect of our lives. The character trait of the month is introduced during council meetings and has been part of every chamber monthly luncheon since 2002. The Owasso Character Council was established in 2002 and is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Character Matters: It doesn’t happen by accident, but by a deliberate decision to invest our time, attention and resources to strengthen those values that make our community great. It is defined by the core values we talk about, the choices we make, the stories we celebrate and the lives transformed by our healthy relationships with one another. When the choice is difficult, when mistakes are made, when things don’t go as expected, character becomes the road map to help us stay on track or get back on track. Character exists when we make choices based on who we are rather than what is expedient in the moment. Mission: The Owasso Char acter Council will strengthen Owasso residents, families, and the community as a whole by promoting excellence in character, helping Owasso to become known as a “City of Character.”
On May 21, 2002, the Owasso City Council proclaimed Owasso a “City of Character in cooperation with the International Association of Cities of Character.
