LETTER FROM THE EDITOR When we decided two years ago to make February our HOLLYWOOD issue, we set up a task for us to be different (from other magazines) and creative, and not to go for the usual suspects. And that is exactly what we are trying to achieve for the second time in a row with this issue. Whether he is Bobby Drake/Iceman in the X-Men franchise or Agent Mike Weston in the television drama series The Following, Shawn Ashmore’s presence on the screen will not leave you indifferent. He is sexy, talented, and inspirational, but also humble and interesting. Miranda Otto is our Entertainment cover, and we could not be happier to have caught her right on time for the premiere of Rake on HBO and I, Frankenstain in cinemas across the world. She was so much fun on the set of the photo shoot that we decided to make a fashion story that is all about movement. She never stays in a single spot; she is restlessly creative, and addictively fun. February marks another turning point for BELLO mag. We are finally welcoming advertisers who are carefully selected and hand-picked by our editors to tell the story of inclusion, creativity, and worldliness. I like putting on an album and... saying “meditating” is overstating it, but it is that sort of thing. I love to snowboard and that’s a great escape for me. When I’m not working, I’m with my wife and two dogs. Tell us about your wife, Dana. How did you guys meet? She’s in the business as well, on the production side, and we met filming a movie together. It was one of those right time and right place [things] and she just so happened to be the right person. We got married at this little gem in Los Angeles called the SmogShoppe, and the location itself is in a strange area. My family came into town and were like, “Wait a minute, this is where you’re getting married?” Once you walk in the doors, it’s like a little oasis. It’s an amazing venue. Although
most of us have moved on to bigger and better things, what’s still fresh in our memories are the obnoxiously inane things we’ve had to endure (or witness secondhand) while navigating a gauntlet of big egos, crappy attitudes, and unbearable personalities. You’ve probably seen Swimming With Sharks. You’ve probably read the books and blogs written by former assistants who dished on their hellish experiences. And while they’re all great cautionary tales detailing the shitstorms that occur within the walls of show biz, I wanted to do something that allowed the former (and current) assistants of this industry to get back at the higher-ups who put them down, the superiors who gave them inferiority complexes, and the oblivious ass-wipes with big paychecks who, ironically, can’t wipe their own asses. We get it. There’s usually a lot of money riding on jobs, particularly projects that will either make or break careers. But that amount of pressure shouldn’t give you the right to throw a sharp object -- usually

an award for some crap movie you produced in the mid-90s -- at someone who makes one-hundredth of your weekly salary. And then there’s the sense of entitlement. Does one really earn the right to throw a hissy fit and deliver a condescending and passiveaggressive voicemail when one’s name is omitted from a lunch invite that’s bound to get rescheduled three more times? Let’s face it, Hollywood bosses. Most of your jobs are just glorified, expensive games of Make Pretend. The amount of time and money spent in determining whether or not a shirt is too red for a 5-second appearance in a 30-second commercial could be put to better use -- for anything. Solving the hunger crisis. Contributing to a scholarship fund. And no, investing in the enlargement of your wife’s cup size doesn’t count. Assistants, it’s your turn. Now’s your chance to anonymously say what you’ve always wanted to say to your bosses. Speak your mind. Let it all out!

It’s fair to say that Monica Raymund and quality, scripted telly go hand in hand. Bello: So are you in Chicago right now? Monica: Yes, I am. I’m in very cold Chicago (giggling) right now. It’s in the 20s. (Monica’s voice is even huskier on the phone. Yes, it’s official...I SO want to be her!) We film about nine months out of the year, so I basically live here now. I think I’m gonna stay; I LOVE the east coast lifestyle. Bello: So the series really changed your entire life. Monica: It’s one of the magical things about the business: changes happen so quickly. I’ve been really lucky. Bello: You are on ALL the best TV shows, and with all these English peeps. Monica: The Aussies and the Brits. Gotta love them. Bello: And so hard for you to kiss all those delicious men. Monica: I know, it’s such a chore working with such dowdy, unattractive men. I’m constantly encouraging them all to take off their shirts, as much as possible (laughs).
Most Juilliard grads (and actors in general) would be quite envious of Ms. Raymund’s career path thus far. First, a spot on the highly acclaimed Lie to Me opposite Tim Roth. Not too shabby. Then, landing a series regular on critical darling The Good Wife as devious - albeit incredibly sultry - bi-sexual Assistant State’s Attorney Dana Dodge. Now that’s a NAME! Since, she had some notable appearances in Arbitrage, Blue Bloods and Brahmin Bulls before landing a plum role on NBC hit Chicago Fire. As Gabriela Dawson, the smokin’ hot no-nonsense paramedic, she gets to be one half of the coolest female duos on TV right now (#Shawson). Her lesbian BFF and ambulance buddy wonderfully leaves all the romancing with male firefighters to Gaby. Hoorah! Helmed by the Daddy of All TV Drama, Dick Wolf, it’s already got its own spin off Chicago P.D., premiering at 11 million deep. So, what could be better than sharing the silver screen with Richard Gere and getting your own Imagen Award for Best TV Actress, all only a few years after graduating? How about being surrounded by the often shirtless (thank you, Jesus!) Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney and Charlie Barnett? As the only lucky lady who gets to make out (deliciously indiscriminately) with two of those three strapping lads (thank you, writers!) and one who can now witness the development of her own legion of male admirers, wishing they could personally ride along, it’s pretty great being Monica Raymund right now. So I had a little chat with her for Bello to see just how great it is.
Bello: So does Gaby make it as a firefighter this season? Monica: Her training begins. What’s crazy is I actually pitched that story idea to the show, and they ran with it. So I’m thrilled with Gaby’s new trajectory.

Bello: That’s a smart move. Monica: There will also be another female firefighter who comes into play during this new storyline. That’s going to be an interesting direction we get to go into.
Bello: That surprises me, that they do that to you. It’s like its own reality show...We Took Seven Actors. Monica: Why not, we’re actors.
Bello: And all that gear and equipment... are they the real deal? Monica: You have no idea how heavy that stuff is! Can I just say, we wear the real gear. It’s not props or lightweight, it’s authentic. It gets so hot, the firefighter bunker gear, I must go through about eight bottles of water a scene. I don’t know how the guys do it all day. Then add actual fires, the heavy boots and the big ass helmet! (laughing). That weighs about ten pounds, and then the oxygen tanks are about sixty pounds. Bello: Wait! Those aren’t lightweight props you carry? Monica: Oh no, no, no, Falene. Let me
Bello: That’s a shame! Monica: Nah it’s fine. I mean yeah, it’s uncomfortable, but it’s also really fun for us. You feel more authentic in the gear. You feel the part; with real fires, carrying actual weight, you don’t have to act that feeling. We get to experience it, which is very cool. Bello: Do you have to work out on top of that? Monica: If you can fit it in, yep, but we also work fourteen-hour days. So when we can, we do. In many ways it turns into its own workout, with multiple takes. I would go over there a lot as a kid and as a teenager. I’m very proud of my Dominican and my Jewish heritage. Bello: Random question...what’s your drink of choice? Can I guess...Glenlivet? Monica: Wow, yes! That was an incredible guess... oh wait... Twitter,

Monica: Also, they are all big tall guys too. I can hold my own, but I don’t try to keep up. Bello: Dive bar or dancing? Monica: I like a dive bar, an Irish Pub... not clubs. Bello: Are you open to comedy? You seem like a fun gal. Monica: I would LOVE to do more comedy.

Bello: So to clarify, Casey won’t be permanently injured in the new season and Gaby becomes a firefighter? Monica: Yes, Casey lives, but Gaby wants to become a firefighter. I cannot confirm or deny whether she will.
Bello: Really...that is GREAT. Monica: I guess it’s those outback lips. And the really creepy part of that is we’re really good friends, so that’s always a

company I founded with three other women in New York. Then there’s SISU Theatrical Productions Company, where we produced a new musical, Volleygirls. I’m a HUGE musical theatre geek. I’m also on the board and faculty of the Performing Arts Project, so I get to teach their summer intensives. And I’ll be doing some crossover work on Chicago P.D., a few episodes here and there. It’s a testament to the skill and charm of Hollywood veteran Nicholle Tom - only 15 years old when she was cast in the role that would make her a household name – that even the imitable Fran Drescher couldn’t dim her star power. But that’s par for the course for this self-described “brassy, loud, and fun” girl from Chicago who’s been performing practically since the womb and who remembers her seven seasons on The Nanny quite fondly. “That was such a wonderful time in my life. I was just in Malibu a couple months ago and saw Fran! We talk on the phone - obviously not as much as I like because we are all so busy - but I love everyone from that show.” Although, even if she had been miserable, you wouldn’t hear the actress utter a negative word about any of her previous work experiences. She and her famous siblings, Emmy-winning The Young and the Restless stars Heather and David (the latter of whom also happens to be her twin), learned early on the value of professionalism and cooperative support in this difficult business. “Since the beginning, we’ve kept each other grounded and had each other’s backs no matter what; that’s everything from simple stuff like running lines together to the serious emotional support. We just know that we need each other even though we are all completely different.” They are all completely different, and each possessed of their own unique career path, especially the girl once considered the late bloomer of the family. “My parents at first thought I was the shy one when actually I would just go off by myself and be in my own little make-believe land. So they put me in acting class and I was there for the first three years that we were in Los Angeles while my (siblings) were out auditioning.” Luckily, the hard work eventually paid off, and after going on only her second audition, Tom landed the first of a string of adolescent roles that would endear her to millions of her peers: that of Ryce Newton in the Charles Grodin vs. the St. Bernard series, Beethoven. It wasn’t masterpiece theater, but it was Feb 2014 - BELLO
an unforgettable experience for the newbie actress. “That was an amazing time! It really started me off. I have great memories of Bonnie [Hunt] and Charles because they were both so patient and supportive, and I remember Bonnie and Danny [Masterson] during the second one [1993’s Beethoven’s 2nd] would always play poker, and one time they actually invited me to come by. So I felt so cool at 14 playing poker with the big guys.” Tom did a lot of growing up between the first and second films, as did her character, who was wooed by early 90s bad-boy and one-time Mr. Shannen Doherty, Ashley Hamilton, in the sequel. She recalls the hearthrob: “Ashley was dating Shannen Doherty at the time (they had not yet embarked on their infamous quickie marriage that would dominate the tabloids for months and end in an annulment in about the same amount of time). I remember, they both went to the premier together and sat right behind me. They were super cool and I was so nervous at the time, but it shows what a small world Hollywood is.” Indeed it is, because as any true 90s pop culture junkie knows, it’s around that same time that Nicholle was cast in one of the most memorable roles of her long career: that of suicide victim, Scott Scanlon’s troubled younger sister, Sue, on Fox’s teen juggernaut, Beverly Hills, 90210. Though she only appeared in four episodes, Sue Scanlon, like Emily Valentine or Ray Pruitt, would become one of the most controversial and oftdiscussed supporting players in the show’s 10 year run. It’s something she can’t quite explain, yet even at the time she knew the part was edgy. “I still get recognized for that all the time! It feels like so long ago, but I remember my sister did my hair and make-up for that audition
because [the casting director] didn’t believe at first that I could be the sexy tortured girl.” She also remembers that it taught her something very important about herself. “I love doing things that I’ve never done before or that no one thinks I can. It gets my blood flowing and I’m like, Yes, I can do it!” Tom employed that same attitude when auditioning for the coveted role
of bawdy, seen-it-all brothel babe, Maureen, on this season’s best new drama, Showtime’s Masters of Sex. It’s a role unlike any other she’s played before, and one that required that she expose more of herself than she had ever done onscreen. “I was so excited when I got the part, but then I was like, Oh My God! I have to show my boobs! I’ve never been naked onscreen before, so I was scared. But
on the day of shooting, everybody took care of me because I had to drop my robe in front of 70 people (including the principal cast and crew, as well as the extras). It’s funny though...as the day went on, I was just walking around naked because it didn’t faze me and I just felt totally comfortable.” The practice should serve this indemand beauty well in her latest project…

These rebels without causes don’t want to start any trouble, bury their noses in books or walk around in leather jackets, but they need to project a level of gravitas while performing. For some it’s innate; others, not so. How is it possible? Maybe François Arnaud knows the secret. Catapulted into the minds of many with the Cannes Film Festival award winner, J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother), and The Borgias (acting alongside Academy Award winner, Jeremy Irons), the well-spoken Canadian is not only talented but also starring with recent Bello cover star, Bella Thorne, in a new film. Bello was able to ask this busy rising star about his thoughts and experiences working in television, in film and on the stage. The answers, not surprisingly, are insightful. As someone who moves easily between TV, film and the stage, is there one medium you prefer to work in? I like the subtleties that the camera picks up, and traveling all around the world to work in film, but I do miss the rehearsal process of theatre. What is the process of “getting into the mind” of your characters? Is the preparation usually the same? The preparation changes every single time, but it always involves a lot of walking and daydreaming. I like to focus on the physicality of a character, even if sometimes it only differs slightly from my own. I want to come at it from an honest place. I’m interested in playing real human beings, so I use a lot of my own experience as a human, even if I wouldn’t say I’m “method.” While working on various productions (often with international casts), do you ever feel comfortable speaking in a specific language or accent? Playing with languages and accent is something I enjoy and that I actually find helpful in creating a character. There’s an interesting balance to find between being confident with what you come up with, but never getting too comfortable either. How different is it to work on a modern day set (e.g. Thursday) versus a historical one (e.g. The Borgias)? Less makeup time! Do you have a preference of genre to work in, such as comedies, dramas, sci-fi, indies, blockbusters...? I like to tackle different styles, but it will never be a part of my decision to do a project or not. It’s all about the quality of the script and the people involved. But I do like to change it up, and I hope I keep getting the opportunity to try as many different genres as possible. What kind of role do you want to tackle next? Any dream projects you’d want to do? Actors you’d want to work with? Tilda Swinton and Gary Oldman are people I hope to work with someday. On anything. Even a short! But ideally that short would be directed by Michael Haneke (Amour) or Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone) or Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave). Haha.

lines we get a sit-down conversation. We have to be on our game, and it’s understood that we aren’t going to have such a conversation twice. We can definitely have opinions regarding line delivery and creative decisions like that. But at the end of the day, Dan gets to do whatever he wants. Of course, he’s the one with the best track record, so it makes sense.
HEARD IT HERE FIRST. You’ve had massive amounts of success for the average twenty-one-year-old. What do you attribute it to? I think I definitely worked very hard. I felt like, for me, with acting, there was no plan B. I wanted to make people laugh, and that was it. I don’t feel comfortable doing anything else. I think we as humans have some sort of sense of home, and you have to pursue that. Home to me was acting. There simply was no other option. What grabs you so much about comedy as opposed to drama? There is so much happening in life on a daily basis that can bring you down in so many ways. There’s so much to be stressed out about. It’s always like, no, not another piece of drama. But you just need to laugh; you need to just let loose. Every time I see a funny movie or a funny TV show, my mood completely changes. I was watching Parks & Recreation the other night and I realized that I was just having the best time. Just sitting down,
eating potato chips. Complete cloud nine. Nickelodeon has been really kind to you. The relationship between your costars, both past and present, and Dan Schneider very much resembles the friendship between Molly Ringwald and the late John Hughes. How’s that been with you? I first met Dan when I was twelve years old, and I am now twenty-one. He’s been in my life for half of it. He’s very much like a father to me, or an uncle. He takes his actors under his wing like nothing I’ve ever seen. He likes a certain work ethic, and works hard to set an example of [that]. And so, I definitely think there’s a different style to the talent that’s worked under him than others. He’s got his own creative voice and we all naturally adopt that after working with him. So his method of doing things...it clearly works. Our onset environment is very strict. We have to know our lines; if we don’t know our
So he definitely gives you a certain extent of freedom? Especially as I’ve gotten older. When I started iCarly it was more instructional, and became more collaborative around the age of seventeen. But now I feel like I do half of the blocking in an episode; I feel like the picking up of props and such can really add to the fluidity of a joke. So that is something I work on with the directors a lot. I enjoy that. When it comes to delivery, if I don’t like something, I’ll jokingly say to Dan, “I hate that, I’m not doing it that way.” So our relationship has clearly shifted. He’ll sometimes even say, “Hey, what do you think is funnier?” I feel honored when he asks me that. Have you had a textbook Dan Schneider moment that looking back on your years working with him describes him? A textbook Dan moment? Let’s see, how many times has he made me cry? [laughs] I’m kidding. We were doing an iCarly run-through during the fifth season of the show. It was our fourth

episode in, and we all got called into Dan’s office. We were all like, “Yeah, our ratings are so in, we’re going to get like gift bags or something, this is amazing.” So, we get into the office and sit down. At this moment we’re all just sitting back and bantering back and forth, laughing. Dan is just sitting there, stone cold case. We’re ready for him to just break into a laugh and tell us how great we are. He waits a second and then says, “Your runthrough yesterday was atrocious. None of you knew your lines. It was sloppy, it was muddy. Where was your timing? Where was your chemistry? Were you thinking about the date you went on yesterday? Were you thinking of what you were going to do after work? What was going through all of your minds? Get it together because you all have senioritis.” I don’t think either of us messed up our lines one more time for the remainder of the season. Those kind of talks are the reasons why he has such successful shows. So I think there’s definitely something to take and learn from him. I don’t get hurt from those things because that’s not uncle Dan, that’s boss Dan. I admire it. What other things are you passionate about besides writing? I love writing. I write all the time. I’m also passionate about live comedy. Anything from improv groups, groundlings, the UCB. I had a moment with figure skating, [laughs] I had a little stint, and then I tried ice dancing. My Ukrainian ice dancing coach coached me to the point where I was ready to have my male partner come in and rehearse

with me in order to start competing. They try to match you up with a good fit. And so these guys were flying in from all over the U.S. - and some from out of the country - for tryouts. I was so uncomfortable being touched at where they have to hold you and lift you, so needless to say I backtracked and stopped [laughs]. Who do you admire professionally? I love Tina Fey - her career is so respectable and she’s so classy - as well as Kristen Wiig. You don’t see them in the tabloids or hear of any antics of them clubbing the night before or anything like that. They’re hilarious, super intelligent, and super well spoken. Honestly, just amazing businesswomen. You look at them and just think, power. Then I also love Lucille Ball and Gilda Radner. Also Jimmy Fallon? I love him! He’s got the most easygoing guy vibe. He’s likeable and seems like he’s just living to live; he just loves everything. You’re twenty-one now, and have accomplished so much. What sets you apart from other child stars who have gone off into the deep end? Oh, I’m far off the deep end [laughs]. I think it’s strange because a lot of people that have, for lack of a better phrase, “gone off the deep end,” you
know, if they’re happy taking part in the antics that they do, then by all means. But I’m twenty-one now; I don’t feel the need to walk out in the street naked or something like that to show the world that I’m twenty-one. I love working for Nickelodeon and I love making people laugh. Adults and kids come up to me all the time and tell me I’m funny. That’s my goal in my life, and so I don’t see any reason to have to shed that, and show that I’m a “grown woman.” I say, what’s the rush to grow up; you’re going to grow old, and we’re all going to die. What’s a day in the life of Jennette? When I’m filming it’s very routine: Monday through Friday, I wake up in the morning and go to work. We’re off rehearsal days by 5pm and off on shoot days by 11pm. But for a fun day, I like to do fun things. A few months back, I had a few days off, and so my friend Colton [Tran] and

I set out on a road trip to the Redwood forests. We didn’t have a hotel to stay at, and we just went out on an adventure: hiking, shopping. I’m kind of big on spontaneous trips. A few weeks before going to the Redwood forests, Miranda Cosgrove, who I was on iCarly with, found an old gift card in her drawer and says, “Hey, you want to go to Monarch Beach with me?” She came and picked me up; we wound up there, and then we were in Orange County, then we wound up in Disneyland because she made some wrong turns. I think there’s so much fun in spontaneity and just going with the flow. I can be very literal and very planny in my head. So it’s nice to turn that handle upside down. You’re a homeowner now. How independent does that make you feel? I do feel independent. I had lived on my own for about a year and half beforehand. I lived in an apartment in Hollywood, but I had been searching for a house. I though it would be nice to have a place that I could call my own, with all the traveling that I do. When I came to my apartment I felt sometimes like I was coming back to another hotel, so I wanted to change that. But I love it. It’s been really hard to find all the furnishings and having everything set up...ten times harder than I would’ve imagined. It’s very fun decorating, but it’s quite exhausting. For example, I picked out some napkins at Z Gallerie. I have taken three separate trips to Z Gallerie to pick up these napkin rings that did not get delivered due to some casual mistake. It’s understandable, but at my expense it’s very frustrating, especially in the L.A. heat. But I finally got the napkin rings, so all is well. But I mean, three trips for napkin rings... come on, Z Gallerie. Get it together.

ACTRESS SHIRI APPLEBY (GIRLS, LIFE UNEXPECTED) FINDS MOTHERHOOD
THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO REMINISCE ABOUT HER FIRST LOVE: A PAIR OF BOOTS. Recently, I became a mom to a wonderful little girl, Natalie. So many things have been fun; taking her to the park, watching her learn to crawl, buying her clothes. I love putting her in fauxfur coats, Ralph Lauren dresses and white Converse high tops, but I recently stopped to think: if she was old enough to choose, what would she choose for herself? Which made me think about my own life, when I was old enough to choose…which got me thinking about my favorite high school boots. To say my boots and I were close would be an understatement. The fact that I had to take them off to get a good night’s rest was the only reason we ever separated. If it had been legal in the state of California to marry boots, without question I would have proposed. I first laid eyes on them at Nordstrom. It was my sophomore year, I had just made the JV cheerleading squad (making a celebratory trip to the Topanga Plaza mall a necessity), and there they were as I came up the store’s elevator. They were on the top stand of the display table closest to the store’s window. They appeared like a vision, a shining light calling me, saying they’d be the soy sauce to my egg roll, the wax to my surfboard, the Jordan Catalano to my Angela Chase. I eyed them carefully – black leather, chunky heel, a little HOLLYWOOD issue - BELLOmag.com
above ankle height, with a muted gold buckle that said they meant business – and within seconds they were on. The fit couldn’t have been more perfect – narrow enough to hug my size six foot, tight enough to look great with a short skirt. I took the plunge, laid down my Amex, and paid for the beauties with all the money I had made working as a hostess at California Pizza Kitchen all summer. I walked out wearing them and I felt proud – I felt like me. Walking down the halls at school, past all the girls in their Doc Martens, there was no messing with me in these boots. These boots knew exactly who they were, which made me feel like I knew who I was – confident, powerful, and one of a kind. Maybe I didn’t want to blend in, maybe I wanted to stand out. I guess that’s what I’m romanticizing so much these days; shoes, and clothes for that matter, that say something about who we are. Right now Natalie is learning how to move, so I want comfort, ease and flexibility for her. As she grows into a little woman, I hope to give her clothing that she can slide into and find clues about herself in. Personally, I want clothes that aren’t about labels or what season we’re in or what fashion rule says. I want shoes like my dear old boots that I slip on and give me… and Natalie… an identity that is perfectly in line with how we feel and how we want to stomp around in the world.

As editors, our job is to constantly inform the public without being biased; we’re not here to endorse designers, but to encourage and support the industry. However, if endorsing was the case, STUDmuffin would be on our list. In its short existence, the house has surpassed industry expectations and maintained its cool factor. At the rate it’s going, the house will have to deal with supply and demand requirements that can mold a brand to stardom or shatter its existence to oblivion. Brincefield has been able to maintain its sexy, which has landed his garments on countless publications, including our own BELLO.
19 years old, went home, quit business school, saved and moved to New York City. Best decision so far. Can you tell us who’s worn or is wearing STUDmuffin NYC? I owe a lot to my New York “mom” and mentor, Pat Field; her store on the Bowery is a staple for celebs and top notch stylists. From Pat’s store I’ve had everyone from Missy Elliott and Miley Cyrus to Adam Lambert and Emma Watson in SMNYC. But my favorite people wearing STUDmuffin are the everyday people out on the street and on the subway that I see running around that look a little loud and had fun getting dressed that day. How has working for Patricia Field influenced you? Way too many ways to list. Working with Pat is like something you will never experience anywhere else. It’s a crazy environment of a lot of creative people and there’s a wealth of knowledge to be soaked up. Beyond her fashion genius, Pat is a really smart lady. There’s always a lesson to learn, and I’ve been taught quite a few. You think you are working hard at whatever it is you are doing, and then you look at Pat. She’s the hardest working woman I know. Why the name “STUDmuffin NYC”? It felt very natural when I started the line of custom STUDDed clothes in

Have you always had a fascination with clothing and design? I was always trend conscious growing up and started to think in high school of making it a career path, not exactly knowing which path I’d take. I got side tracked on those plans for awhile, entered business school in Indiana, visited New York City for the first time at

my audience. But usually I just let the creative process take over when I’m designing a new piece and don’t have guy, girl or anyone in mind but creating a badass piece of art that will be around for years and years to come.
2010, and I was surprised when I looked it up that it wasn’t in use already. What was the turning point decision that made you generate your own label? I started STUDmuffin NYC in 2010 as a side gig making custom clothes for people that you couldn’t find anywhere else. I saw the demand for my product and took it from there. I myself had went out shopping for a studded and spiked vest in the East Village of New York and wasn’t finding anything under the $500-700 level. I made my own clothes, I wore them out, and it was on. Now the custom clothing idea has expanded in to a custom street wear line unlike any other. What’s it like taking a leadership role compared to working on someone else’s vision? Ever since I have tried the leadership role, there’s no going back. Once an entrepreneur, always an entrepreneur. I will always have this desire to build something for myself rather than build something for someone else. That can be quite hard sometimes. What I do love is a collaboration. I love merging ideas together with another designer or artist to come up with art you never could have imagined. I’m all for collaborations. Who is STUDmuffin NYC? STUDmuffin NYC is everyone. I make clothes for anyone who wants to stand out a bit. STUDmuffin is downtown, edgy, fun fashion. It’s custom, it’s one of a kind, [and] handmade in the U. S. of A. Are you designing for yourself or anyone in particular? I do a lot of designing for myself. I make menswear that I want to wear, of course, and hope it translates to
Being in the industry for as long as you have, do you ever find yourself getting bored? Well I wouldn’t say four years is that long, but four years of going non-stop trying to build a brand can be intense and exhausting. There were definite days when I wondered if I should throw in the towel due to stress, lack of sleep, lack of money...but it was never because of boredom. My mind turns 24/7 with new ideas. I need something to put them into. What sort of feedback have you received from the industry? I’ve gotten a lot of good responses from the people I care about and some negative from the people I don’t give a shit about. So I’m happy. “Stud Muffin” has this hint of androgyny...is that a purposeful connotation? Absolutely. Most of the pieces, as I said, I go into not designing for a specific sex, but just start painting, studding and spiking away and end up with something that is just so DAMN visually pleasing that it could go either way. I also love to see a girl in a pair of our baggy, down to the knee Spike Sweat shorts, so hot! Fashion is much more than a project, it’s a business. How have you dealt with the business side of things? Emma Watson in Studmuffin NYC studded Denim cut offs
I struggle with the business side of things on occasion. I sometimes get caught up on wanting to just create pretty things and forget that there’s a whole other side of things. I often say, “one day, the perfect partner is going to come along that wants to help grow STUDmuffin and take on the day to day business aspect and turn us into a powerhouse.” Until that day...I only trust myself. I get it done, and I assure everyone aspiring [that] it can be done. Have you had to comprise in any way to do and be where you are at? I compromise everyday! I compromise my lifestyle, my time and my relationships. I work a lot, I work long hours and I work hard. Sometimes I work for free. I’m still very low on the fashion totem poll, but my business is main priority right now. Are there any collaborations you’re working on that we should know about? I’m constantly collaborating with fellow downtown New York artist Scooter Laforge on several projects from our custom Converse “PUNK” All-Star collection to a new line of painted, studded and spiked, vintage leather jackets. Vintage leather jackets, flannel shirts, snapbacks, STUDmuffin spiked sweatpants, black-on-black high tops, and the legalization of marijuana in the state of New York. How has ecommerce changed you? Ecommerce is awesome. It’s totally key for young designers. If you don’t have your own site, start an Etsy shop or one of the other many sites available. Then blast it out on all the social networks! Sales do come from Instagram and all the bullshit your friends hate of you promoting yourself day and night. Do it! Who cares, no one else will for you! There you have it. Everything he creates automatically becomes an IT item every celebrity wants, as seen on Miley Cyrus, Emma Watson, Missy Elliot, and countless others. In our encounter with designers, we always like to get down to the root of their design aesthetics and personality. We like to learn and inform the public of the lives lived, the struggles and moments of joy designers take from start to finish. Pereira is definitely a fashion renaissance woman; she teaches us the importance that readership has become to a brand and the trials she’s encountered going from blogging to designing. Simonett, tell us about yourself. I started my career in fashion as an intern for 944 Magazine at 17 years old. I then went on to produce events for the publisher of the magazine’s entertainment company and in 2011 started a personal style blog with my friend Eugenia called The Goodwill Project. After a year of styling outfits
from Goodwill and documenting them on our blog, Eugenia and I launched a website for fashion professionals and creatives to collaborate called Miami Style Mafia. In 2013 I created my clothing brand, Style Mafia. What made you launch your own label? For many years I wasn’t finding clothing that I wanted to wear in many clothing stores. I wanted to create a brand that offered very well made and unique pieces at prices that were affordable. How has blogging influenced Style Mafia? Being a blogger has deeply influenced my brand. It’s helped me to understand my consumer in a very personal way and made it so much easier to market my products. Many of the press opportunities that my brand has been included in have been made possible through the connections I have been able to establish throughout my time as a blogger. Where did the name Style Mafia originate? I wanted to create a name that was catchy and had a little bit of a sense of authority. I think Style Mafia is both of those things. Who are you designing for? Style Mafia is made for fashionconscious women who want to dress in clothing that is well confectioned, detail-oriented, and different than what everyone else is wearing. What sort of feedback have you received? Honestly, nothing but positive feedback so far! Editors are featuring us in their books and a lot of the stores that are

purchasing from us are really happy with the clothing quality to price ratio. Will you venture into menswear? You know, all my guy friends have been asking me this question. I would love to, but I think right now I need to focus on what we know how to do, and once we can expand our team we can begin to think about subdivisions for the brand. How has e-commerce changed the way you do business? I think it’s pretty amazing that a very big part of my business is conducted just through my iPhone. From communicating with my factory in China to setting up orders to making sales, I’m seriously feeling like the future is now. Our website, Instagram and the different social e-commerce sites we sell through have been a huge factor in expanding our reach outside of Miami. Have your blog followers followed you on your new path? Definitely! A lot of my blog girls have helped me to promote the brand, and it’s because of my followers that I’ve been able to create a reputable name for the label in such a short period of time. Do you plan on doing any collaborations? Style Mafia is very much a creative brand. Since the launch of the label I have participated in several collaborations with different creatives from Miami. You can check out our exclusives on
the blog. At the moment we are also in talks with a few artists to collaborate on print designs for the brand.

Has branding been challenging? Branding is one of my strong suits. I’ve always been very focused on maintaining a clean and sleek aesthetic for every project I produce, and I think I’ve been successful at carrying this through with Style Mafia.
How do you feel is the best way to reach your consumers? My audience has been really receptive to the content we produce for the blog and share via our social sites. This year we want to focus heavily in producing events in Miami to fortify our local reach.
How has your blogging changed since the commencement of your brand? Right now Miami Style Mafia is focused on producing original content while collaborating with fashion professionals. Usually the clothes we feature in the shoots we create are Style
Is there anything you’re feeling for the upcoming Spring - Summer 2014 season you would like to recommend to our readers? I’m feeling black and white, intricate prints and minimal cuts.

during the last century by designers such as Coco Chanel (her pearls, gold chains and medallions weren’t all real), costume jewelry bridged the gap between cheap and chic. Although not always inexpensive, they fused fine jewelry handiwork with plated metals and colored stones, making them more accessible for the masses. The industry was so large from the 1950s to the 1970s that there were over 1,000 manufacturers in North America. Yet even though the fad faded after the days of Dynasty, the tides have recently turned in favor of statement pieces. According to a Costume Jewelry and Novelty Manufacturing Industry report, in North America, sales totaled $2.3 billion (U.S.) in 2010.

Today, these lines have been developed by designer brands such as Prada and Lanvin: high style, and also highend. Mid-point pieces are rare for exuberant pieces. Then there’s Alan Anderson. Born in Montreal, Quebec and based in Toronto, Anderson is a self taught jewelry designer who handcrafts one-of-a-kind works of wearable art. Available at fashion emporiums (Henri Bendel, Holt Renfrew) and worn by famous women (Elizabeth Taylor, Katy Perry), his pieces hark back to a time when celebrities were bigger than life. “I’m hugely influenced by Old Hollywood. It was so glamorous,” Anderson says. Actresses had a way of throwing together ensembles that were froths of fantasy, jewelry being front and center. But, he doesn’t only watch films from the Golden Age for ideas. “Inspiration comes from many different sources: a walk through areas of Toronto, like Little India… I love all the colors and textures.” Even with inspiration at hand, creating a piece isn’t as easy as it seems. “Sometimes I choose the stones first, or sometimes I get an idea for a new design, and test it out in different stones,” he explains. Even when sourcing stones, Anderson looks for ones with a sense of personality. “I buy stones that speak to me. Sometimes [certain] cuts or colors haven’t been made in 40-60 years; that makes them special!” Their innate history – Where did they come from?

Who wore them? – adds an unequivocal element of desirability due to their inherent rarity. While reflecting on the past, what lies ahead for Anderson? Since his collections aren’t season specific (unlike most designers), he’ll continue working in his studio, growing existing relationships with customers and retailers, and going from there. And if the industry’s sales continue to rise, as they’re wont to, Anderson’s future will be as sparkling as his jewelry.

The three piece suit as we know it arose about 400 years ago and has since gone in and out of fashion in one form or another. As is human nature, we indulge in making a modern twist on what is considered a classic. In other words, this is not your father’s suit. For the spring 2014 shows, a plethora of suits made their way down the runway in all different cuts, textures, fabrics, and colors: jackets with no sleeves, Bermuda shorts with suit jackets, and prints so loud the neighbors may ask you to keep it down. Out with the old and in with the new! Get creative this spring. Who knows, you may even start a trend. At Calvin Klein Collection, suits in all shades of blue were seen. This suit in an icy cold blue from head to toe would be a stand-out around the water cooler,

or perhaps just the jacket for those who prefer to play it safe. At Givenchy, the suits have gone tribal and then made their way to the beach. This crisp clean suit in all white is dressed down with a pair of strapped sandals and a jacket tied at the waist. Alexander McQueen had a play on a double-breasted suit jacket paired with Bermuda shorts. The mostly black ensemble gets a boost with a patterned shirt and a pair of metallic silver loafers. Missoni brought us a two-piece suit printed in a handsome blue, teal, and green plaid. The pant and jacket were made more casual by omitting a button-up for a t-shirt. Also seen with a sockless blue suede loafer. And the man suited in Jil Sander was a man not easily missed. This suit was printed head to toe in a new wave black and white graphic, the pattern slightly toned down with a black button-up and a sleek pair of black loafers.

Good Enough To Eat FLORAL PATTERNS ARE ONE TREND THAT WILL CONTINUE TO BE A STAPLE IN YOUR SPRING WARDROBE. IT IS A SIGN OF REBIRTH AND THE COMING OF WARMER WEATHER. CULTURALLY, FLOWERS ARE RECEIVED STARTING AT BIRTH; AS WE GROW OLDER THEY BECOME A ROMANTIC GESTURE, AND IN PASSING, A SIGN OF REMEMBRANCE. SOMETHING SEEMINGLY SIMPLE WHEN SOWN ONTO A BLOUSE CAN CARRY A DEEPER MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE TO EACH PAIR OF EYES THAT VIEWS IT. The spring shows had many trends, but a number of pieces from the most skilled designers working today featured floral patterns. Classically, we correlate flowers with femininity; however, we want to show you that there are many ways and styles to dress them up or down. At Zac Posen, a series of sculptural dresses walked down the runway, none of which included a floral pattern. Posen took the trend and expressed it in a more mild manner. All of the models featured silk flowers in their updos, including the model in this gorgeous maroon plisse dress. Even when understated, a floral accent can make an outfit.
At Marchesa and Etro, a dress and a gown are emblazoned with two varieties of floral patterns. The gown at Marchesa could be seen walking down a red carpet with the waterfall of white floral on black lace. At Etro we saw floral meeting safari in a stunning three quarter length red skirt and free flowing blouse. Marchesa
At Alberta Ferretti and Christian Dior, the concept of the pattern was applied in a more direct way than at Zac Posen, but in a manner that allows you to dress the pattern up or down. Ferretti sent her models down in pure white, often translucent tops, skirts, and dresses with multicolored floral embroidery, while at Christian Dior the pattern was dressed down with a bifurcated black jacket and a pair of sleek matte black and white heels.

All five looks are stunning representations of the potential of floral for spring, although it still may be that this is not the trend for everyone. Even if you can’t wear it, you can still eat it. There are a variety of edible flowers that are made in many ways to keep you cool for spring. The hibiscus flower is a good source of vitamin C and can help to lower blood pressure. I love my Colombian heritage. I don’t go back as much as I would like to, and I’ve vowed to change that starting this New Year. As “Americanized” as I may be (I moved here when I was four), my family and I are still very much rooted in Colombian culture. We still speak Spanish at home, cook Colombian food, listen to the music and are overall just proud of our beautiful birth country.
ON JOINING THE ARMY STRAIGHT OUT OF SCHOOL. The Army was a beautiful chaos in my life. It taught me about all the discipline it would require for me to do the thing I loved most: acting. Even though I knew almost immediately that I would get out after serving my 1st term, it kept me focused and gave me a capacity for a vision beyond me. I experienced and saw what extreme poverty felt and looked like when I traveled overseas as a translator for emergency relief efforts. It’s an unforgettable perspective and vantage point for a young person. It awakened me to the world, and for that I am thankful. Now I feel blessed to be able to use it all to tell stories!
ON WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE FOR HER. I am living my life with intention, in every aspect. I want my life to feed my work and vice versa, because ultimately this life is about contribution. How did you end up in TV Hosting? I got into hosting thanks to my business partner, Kourosh Taj. We started a company together called No Good Entertainment, which became my launch into showbiz at ngtv.com. We needed someone to be the face to go out and do interviews and he said, “You know what, you should be the one.” I said, “Hell no!” I had no interest in being on camera. The whole thing scared the crap out of me and I thought I would be better doing behind-the-scene producing. He ended up scheduling an interview with Lemmy [Kilmister] from Motorhead, and he knew I was such a big fan of music, and a fan of hard rock especially. He knew that was the carrot he could dangle in front of me that would make me say yes. Unfortunately, that interview never happened, but at that point I had already said yes to a bunch of other scheduled interviews that I couldn’t get out of, and that started my career in being on camera. It was a happy accident. What was racing through your mind when you started filming your first episode on VH1 Big Morning Buzz Live? The exact phrase that was in my mind was, “Don’t fuck it up!” (laughs) There was a lot riding on my shoulders at that point, but I was stepping into something that was incredibly cool and I was well supported by everyone around me. I literally...right before we went live, I said out loud to everyone, “Hey everybody, don’t fuck it up!” Everyone started laughing and it took away the stress of the moment and we just carried on. It was crazy those first couple of weeks because VH1 never really had a daily live show. Then, over the course of three years, we grew into this little engine that could and moved into the old TRL (Total Request Live) stage and we were overlooking Times Square. It was a dream come true for me that I am going to cherish for the rest of my life.

Where do you find yourself at your most comfortable: program hosting, acting in movies or modeling? I love being behind the scenes because it is a different kind of pressure and it requires a lot less hair and makeup. I love being on camera as well because I get to be “in the moment” and I can

As for modeling, when I did this shoot for Bello Mag, I even had to take a second and just say, “Wow, this is really nice to not have to talk!” It’s all about having the fierce eyes and smiles and sucking in your gut. It’s like working a different muscle. What hobbies do you have that you would like to share with us? Well, I could tell you about my porn watching habit, but that’s not going to happen. (laughs). I do like to do Muay Thai boxing. Since being back in Los Angeles, I have discovered a new love for hiking. I found a love for baking that I didn’t know I had. And whenever I have time, I love watching horror movies. Even the bad ones. What are some of the values that you put out there in the universe that mold and shape who Carrie Keagan is? Humility, joy and laughter. I think that encompasses everything that I am. What advice do you have to give for those who are pursuing the hosting and producing profession? The most important thing is to figure out who you are and then just be yourself. many different directions. Don’t ever take yourself too seriously because it’s easy to get caught up in the madness. This industry can be shallow and scary, but at the end of the day, this business is entertainment. I’ve learned to take what you are doing seriously, but remember that it is still entertainment. So what is the next chapter of your life after BIG MORNING BUZZ LIVE? Where will we see you next? No Good Entertainment has a bunch of shows in development at the moment, which we are really excited about. We have some reality shows, a game show (one in particular that I would be hosting), and that one is going to be a Comic-Con type of genre show. We have a talk show pilot with VH1 that we are working on that I am producing.

means ‘God Crown,’ and ‘Deus Corona’ is the Latin for that! How has religion helped shape who you are on and off the field? Religion has played a huge role in my life. I was brought up in a Christian household and had a good moral compass instilled in me. I guess in sport where it can be very fickle and so unpredictable, my faith has given me a crutch to lean on through tough times as well as keep my feet on the ground in the good times. Regardless of how well [I or] the team are performing - or not performing - my faith remains a constant, which is very encouraging. What does your typical day of training look like? Our training days are fairly short but very intense. In the morning we’ll start with a stretch then speed session, followed by weights training. This could be a leg or upper body session depending on the day. We then break for awhile and ‘refuel’ - this will be a chance to eat, take on our proteins and supplements to aid muscle growth, and recover. Following this we’ll have a video review session where we look at the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and then head out onto the training field where we add all the detail into practice and prepare for the weekend! It has been said that you were raised in a strict household. Would you say, in retrospect, that strict environment played a role in your work ethic as an athlete? I was brought up in a strict household but am so thankful for this in hindsight. In relation to sport it gave me great discipline. I personally think this is one of the biggest attributes in

You’re a 30-year-old athlete in an extremely physical and demanding sport, yet you’re producing some of your best results. Would you agree that this goes against the “conventional” - yet ridiculous - thought in the sports world that an athlete’s career diminishes after 30? Albeit that I’m thirty and entering into my ‘twilight,’ I still feel that I’m definitely able to play and produce performances at a high level. I think one of the major factors is the experience that I’ve gained over my twelve years playing professionally. You have quite a sense for style. How did this come about? I’ve always been keen on fashion, but that’s not to say I have good fashion sense! I think living in London where it is so multicultural with so many diverse styles has affected this. I’m a people watcher and love looking at peoples’ styles, fashion senses, smells, and just the way people are. I try and take this all in and kind of make my own niche!

What are a few of your must-haves in your daily diet, foods or supplements? I have a high protein diet to supplement all the hard work we do, so this is a definite!! Also, multivitamins are essential, especially as our game is predominately played in the cold, so you need protection from the elements!
