Welcome! COMe AND CYCLe IN FINLAND! Our product manual is a compilation of the best mountain bike and touring cycle routes in Finland. Finnish nature is unique and diverse. Few countries have so much to offer as Finland. Available cycling routes cover archipelago Finland, lakeland Finland, the forests near the eastern border, the Finland of tree-covered hills and villages and the Finland of fells. There are both easy routes suitable for families and challenging ones for adventure-seekers.

Welcome to OutdoorsFinland.com, the cyclists’ databank OutdoorsFinland.com internet sites are designed for nature and activity tourists, whether you prefer to cycle, hike or canoe. The websites have route descriptions and route facts (length, difficulty and estimated durations) for every route. On maps, every route has a GPS track and shows the most important services along the route. Maps The GT series covers all the cycling routes in Finland. National and local cycling routes are marked on the map. The map also shows hiking and canoeing routes. Contact information for tourist information services, online links and instructions on taking bicycles on public transport are provided. The cycling guides, Fillariopas 1 and 2, contain a range of cycling routes in Southern Finland. The routes starting from Helsinki are based on local and national cycling routes. The GT series maps and The Cycling Guides can be ordered online at www.karttakauppa.fi. The website is in English and Finnish.

There are plenty of new alternatives, destinations and places popular with Finns themselves. We have wanted to highlight small places and little treasures where you will feel that you really are in quintessential Finland, in the countryside, small villages, down by the water, in the shade of forests and in the peace of the wilderness. We have also wanted to highlight new service providers and companies that have been operating on the domestic market, but have the expertise and professional skill to serve your customers too. The National Cycling Routes: Finland’s most recognised and best cycling routes that go either from town to town or as circular routes in areas of water. There is more information on this on the following spread, pages 4–5. See also www.OutdoorsFinland.com.

Helsinki–Turku Helsinki–Tampere Länsi-Uudenmaan reitit Hämeenlinnan alueen reitit Pääkaupunkiseudun reitit

Helsinki — Kotka — Lappeenranta Etelä-Karjalan kierrokset Kouvolan alueen reitit Itä-Uudenmaan reitit Helsinki — Järvenpää — Jyväskylä

The cycling season begins in spring as nature awakes and time proceeds toward the period of white nights, when the rest of Finland wakes up. Cyclists can continue into late autumn, enjoying the beautiful explosion of colours of the autumn foliage. The cycling manual belongs to the Outdoors Finland series of product manuals, which also includes hiking and canoeing manuals. The General Information section has facts about Finland. The manuals have been produced by the Outdoors Finland project of the Finnish Tourist Board.

Mountain biking: is mostly done at wellknown tourist destinations where there are many different routes and different levels of accommodation available. A new product is a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience offered at Utsjoki, where you can cycle along ancient well-worn paths in the dazzling scenery of the northern wilderness.

HIGHLIGHTS Villages, towns, market squares and events After the long winter an intense spring and brilliant summer begin, and people want to get everything out of them that they can. Local residents, cottagers and holidaymakers fill the centres of towns and villages. Things are happening everywhere. White nights Even in late summer, the sun only sets for a few hours and the day does not turn towards night until the autumn. As the temperature gently cools on bright summer evenings, cycling is an experience that you can get nowhere else. Finland of contrasts The Finland of archipelagos and waterways changes into the Finland of primeval forests and tree-covered hills as you go towards the eastern border and to the north. The wilderness of the fells of Northern Lapland offer quiet emptiness as a contrast to the populated cultural settings of Southern Finland. Sauna Almost every Finnish home has a sauna, and going to the sauna and swimming in natural waters are an integral part of summertime in Finland. Try it yourself and wash away the dust and fatigue of your cycling trip in the sauna. It’s a great way to do it!

The National cycling routes are lined with great culture and nature as well as services that make it easy to keep the daily distances reasonable. The start and end points of national cycling routes always have excellent public transport connections – airports, railway and bus stations.

Little villages and towns follow one another, and the summer sees the full of life, markets, events and holidaymakers. The National cycling routes run from town to town through the most beautiful of Finnish Landscape, connecting the largest cities to each other.

The most important national routes:

6. The coastal route from Turku to Oulu, 955 km, connects small towns known for their blocks of wooden houses and fine harbours, two Unesco World Heritage Sites, and some of the most stunning sandbanks in the Nordic countries.

1. Helsinki–Turku, 308 km, the Historic King’s Road to the West. The shared history of Finland and Sweden has left its marks on the two cities, which are connected by the route.

7. The historical Ox Road from Turku to Hämeenlinna, 169 km, was already known in Viking times, and has been used by brigands, pilgrims and traders. It features mediaeval castles and churches. The precious cultural scenery of the Aura River valley changes into the forested national park areas.

2. The route from Helsinki to Tampere, 246 km, combines interesting historical and cultural destinations with sights of Finland´s industrial era. Stop at the Sääksmäki Bridge to admire the beautiful lake scenery. 3. The route from Helsinki to Jyväskylä, 335 km, runs along the historical riverside to Lake Tuusulanjärvi, whose scenery has inspired several prominent persons of Finnish art, music and literature. It follows the shores of Finland’s second-largest lake, Lake Päijänne.

8. The Suur-Saimaa tour, 362 km, a circular route around Lake Saimaa, is the queen of Finnish bicycle routes. It passes through Finnish national landscapes. The plentiful waterways of Suur-Saimaa, the enchanting cities of Imatra, Lappeenranta and Mikkeli, and the way of life in the Finnish summer on the shores of the lakes.

6

4. The route from Helsinki to Mikkeli, 297 km, is fine cycling route through the luscious metropolitan region, past the Finnish Lakeland to hospitable Southern Savonia. 5. Helsinki–Lappeenranta, 347 km, the Historic Kings´s Road to the East. The shared history of Finland, Sweden and Russia has left its marks on the small towns, buildings and fortifications. There are several locations showcasing the massive defensive bunker line from World War II.
