he City of Pembroke Pines is one step closer to creating its own community garden. It is hoping to join the growing trend of cities like Miramar that have created environmentally and economically sustainable systems that produce naturally grown vegetables and fruits and provide a social network for garden volunteers. The Pembroke Pines Community Garden will be located on the grounds of City Hall, allowing easy access for anyone who wants to participate. “We have the land and approval to move forward,” said Guillermo Salazar, landscape director who is spearheading the project, along with Tony Burzo and several other public works employees. “Now we just need volunteers and sponsors.” The City is in the process of forming a steering committee to help bring the concept to fruition. Some initial thoughts are that the garden will include raised garden beds, as well as a section to grow fruit trees and other crops. Volunteers would be entitled to a portion of all harvests with a small annual membership and a commitment of at least one hour a week in the garden. A portion of all of the harvests would also be donated to charity. Once the committee is formed, the plans will be finalized. “It is a way for people who are interested in gardening to collaborate and promote a healthier community,” said Salazar. Salazar is hoping that residents, community civic groups, schools, clubs, local businesses and others will get involved. The City is also looking for donations of edible plants, seeds, soil, mulch, and other materials. It is also in need of shovels, wheel barrows and other equipment. Sponsorships are available starting at $250.

The semi-annual event benefits the City of Pembroke Pines senior services programs. It will be held on Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, 301 N.W. 103rd Ave. in Pembroke Pines. The show attracts hundreds of art lovers who have the opportunity to visit with more than 60 vendors from throughout the state of Florida. ichael Merrill has grown up surrounded by law enforcement. So many of his family members have dedicated their careers to protecting and serving the American public that few were surprised by his choice to do the same. The City of Pembroke Pines Police Department recently welcomed Merrill to its force. Merrill comes from a long line of officers which dates back to his grandfather John Lombardo, who is a retired Police Chief from Pembroke Pines. His grandfather was with the NYPD for eleven years before joining the Pembroke Pines Police Department as an officer in 1987 and retiring as Chief of Police, twenty-two years later in 1994. Merrill’s father Charles Merrill is a Lieutenant with the Bal Harbor Police Department, where he has served over twenty years. His Uncle Detective Glenn Gainey is a twenty year veteran with BSO, Uncle Sergeant Michael Pazienza Sr. is in his fifteenth year with the Pembroke Pines Police Department and Uncle Angelo Pazienza, who is a retired sergeant from P.P.P.D., is now an investigator with the Broward Charles Merrill, Lt. hroughout the summer, campers at the Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League Summer Camp participated in sports, arts and crafts, special events, daily field trips and more. They agreed, however, to give up one of their fun-filled activities to make a difference in the lives of others. The PAL campers were divided into groups and performed one of three community service projects based on their ages, which ranged from 8 to 14. The youngest campers visited the Southwest Focal Point Community Center of Pembroke Pines, where they washed approximately 30 cars in three hours. “Our campers used lots of soap and elbow grease to make the cars nice and clean Campers from the Pembroke Pines PAL Summer Camp visited ARC of Broward. for the seniors,” said Joe Williams, PAL Executive Director. One group of campers visited the ARC Achieve & Rehabilitation Center, a private, for families, men, women, and children. Throughout the summer, they collected items not-for-profit organization which provides support and assistance primarily to chilfor those in need. They day of the visit, they arrived in a van filled with clothes, toys, dren and adults with developmental disabilities. The campers made and delivered key books, toiletries, and schools supplies. They also brought discounted food from Amici’s chains, visited with the ARC clients and toured the facility. Olivia Davis, 12, was among Ristorante & Pizzeria in Pembroke Pines, as well as donated drinks and desserts from the campers that visited ARC. “Today, I learned that even though these people have Costco of Pembroke Pines. disabilities they are just like you and I,” said Olivia. “They can talk, walk, hug and play games. Cervical Injuries From Car Accidents – Are They Preventable?

hiplash is a common and painful injury caused by motor vehicle accidents. While almost everyone has heard the name, most people don’t have a clear idea of what whiplash is, how serious it can be or how to prevent it.

They can even happen to you.

How Do Car Accidents Cause Whiplash?

Whiplash is a tearing of the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck that occurs when the body is exposed to a sudden jolt, such as in a car accident, a fall, or a blow to the head while playing sports. The injury is most common in rear-end collisions, but can occur from a collision from any direction. Additionally, it doesn’t have to be a high-speed crash. In a collision, the car is abruptly accelerated forward (or in another direction). Everything in the car, including your body, resists this sudden forward motion, which is why you feel pushed back in your seat. Braced against the seat, your torso is carried forward with the car. If your head is not braced, it can be jerked back for a second or so. The jolt of the crash can whip your head up and back, tearing muscles and other structures in your neck. Your neck’s reflex reaction is to pull your head forward, but that can be overdone in a car accident, making the injury worse.

What Are the Symptoms of Whiplash?

Often, the symptoms of whiplash are not immediately apparent after a car accident. They typically take 12 to 24 hours to develop and the symptoms may get worse every day until properly treated. Whiplash commonly takes several months to as long as two (2) years after the accident to heal. Common symptoms of whiplash occur in the neck, shoulders, back, and arms, and can include: ▸▸ Pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling and/or swelling ▸▸ Muscle spasms ▸▸ Weakness or temporary loss of movement in the neck ▸▸ Headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears ▸▸ Blurred vision or other vision changes ▸▸ Cognitive issues such as problems concentrating, memory loss and irritability ▸▸ Depression and sleep interruption ▸▸ Difficulty performing daily activities at home or work

How Can I Reduce the Risk of a Whiplash Injury?

Your first line of defense against whiplash is to wear a seatbelt at all times while in an automobile and to properly position your headrest. The top of the headrest should be just below the top of your head. Everyone in the car should routinely adjust the headrest just as they routinely fasten their safety belts. Keep in mind, however, that whiplash can be caused by a collision from any direction. If your head snaps to the side, for example, the headrest will not be in a position to protect you. After any car accident, be aware of your symptoms. If you are experiencing any neck pain, be sure to be evaluated by a doctor.

On another subject it is always a challenge to keep litter under control in our City. We have volunteer groups that assist us; however, the bottom line is that we all have to be more vigilant about not tossing anything out of the window while we are driving. It is very easy to keep the trash in the car until it can be disposed of properly. I have seen people throwing trash from their car windows and my first reaction is that they must be from another city, because our residents would never do that. All of the interpretations are on display at Studio 18 in the Pines. They surround the original artwork and many of them are for sale. “It is incredible to see the pieces side by side,” said Robyn Vegas, Cultural Arts Coordinator. “Some are almost identical.” During the opening, the special needs artists met with the public and received certificates signed by Mayor Frank Ortis. Twenty artists sold pieces for as much as $100. “It was a great opportunity for the students to see themselves as artists and tap into their creative sides, said Liz Disney, Schott’s Director of Programs. “They felt a real sense of accomplishment.”

ore than 500 people attended the opening of the Sincerity Project at Studio 18 in the Pines on August 5. The project has provided a group of special needs artists with a way to display their creative talent as they work with established artists in the community. They have proven that imitation can be the sincerest form of flattery. The exhibit will remain open through September 30 at Studio 18 in the Pines. The idea for the project began when special needs artist Danielle Segarra visited Studio 18 on a field trip with Schott Communities, a non-profit group for persons who are developmentally or physically challenged. Danielle fell in love with a painting by Studio 18 artist and property manager Jill Slaughter. Ironically, the painting of a bride and groom is called, “It’s Just the Beginning.” Danielle asked if she could take a photo of the piece so she could create her own version of it and Jill agreed happily. Her visit inspired the idea to curate a show and invite others with special needs to experience the joy of creating art. An impressive group of more than 40 artists were eager to exhibit and participate in the project. They made their original artwork available “for interpretation” to more than 100 artists at seven special needs facilities in Broward County. The special needs artists represent a wide range of talent and abilities. While some are able to paint with their hands, others must paint with a brush in their mouth

The six-week program, which begins on Sept. 19, will be held at the Sunset Lakes Community Center, 2801 SW 186 Ave. “The rush of daily life breeds rudeness.,” said Elena Brouwer, Director and Chief Etiquette Officer of the International Etiquette Centre, who teaches the class and is recognized as an international expert in her field. “People claim to be too busy to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’; to let their host know if they can attend a party; or to look up from their smart phone to make eye contact with the person in front of them. Children are not born knowing civility. It must be taught. This course is a primer and the lessons are remembered for a lifetime.” The course helps the average child build self-confidence in the areas of social skills, dining etiquette, and common courtesies. It addresses fundamental skills, as well as many of the issues that kids face today like texting and Facebook. The students learn proper greetings, handshakes and telephone manners, as well as how to write a thank you note and make eye contact. They become better prepared for dining out by learning the correct use of silverware and American and Continental styles of eating, as well as how to behave at the table and set it for a four course meal. The students also learn how to conduct themselves at a party or dance and practice posture and poise. They learn how to ask someone to

dance and what to do if they are rejected. They also learn some basic steps of the Waltz, Tango and Merengue. “If the students learn these skills at a young age, they will come naturally during a job interview or some other important occasion.” The last class is a three-course catered dinner which gives the students an opportunity to practice everything they learned. iramar’s Palm View Animal Hospital recently held its grand opening. The animal hospital was filled with pet owners from throughout the area, as well as friends and family. Guests had an opportunity to tour the facility and win some great prizes in a raffle to benefit a rescue organization. “We have had a great response since we opened,” said Owner Dr. Waldie-Torres. Palm View combines the highest level of veterinary medicine with outstanding client service and a compassionate touch. The full-service veterinary hospital offers a variety of services for dogs and cats, including regular preventative care, medicine, surgery, dental care, bathing, boarding and more. The caring and knowledgeable staff has at least seven years of experience. The animal hospital is conveniently located at 12120 Miramar Parkway, in the Miramar Square Plaza near Kohls, just east of the 1-75 Miramar exit. Dr. Waldie-Torres has had a passion for animals for as long as she can remember, so it was a natural choice for her to become a veterinarian. Growing up, she had dogs, cats, parrots, fish and hamsters. She currently has four cats and some fish. “I just love being around animals and caring for them,” said Dr.Waldie-Torres. “They are wonderful companions.” In 2002, the native South Floridian obtained her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida. equipment which allows Dr. Waldie-Torres and her staff to do things in an efficient manner that produces quick results. The hospital has three examination rooms; a pharmacy; treatment area with laboratory; surgical suite; bathing area and isolation area. It has digital radiology equipment so x-rays can be read in less than a minute. It also has an in-house lab, eliminating the need to send out blood work, urine and other samples. In only a few minutes, results are ready and Dr. Waldie-Torres can begin recommending a course of treatment. In the event that a patient requires surgery, most procedures are done at the hospital, where the patient is comfortable and familiar. Dr. Waldie-Torres recommends annual visits for young pets and more frequent visits for older pets. “It is important to discover issues as early as possible,” said Dr. WaldieTorres. “A check- up often reveals health problems that the owner had not noticed. Dr. Waldie-Torres understands that her client’s pets are like a part of their family and spends as much time as needed answering any questions. She makes sure that they have the tools they need in order to make informed decisions and take care of their pets once they leave the hospital. If they have a question, she is always just a phone call away. Clients like Jennifer Iorio are willing to travel from as far as Coral Springs to seek her advice. Jennifer brings her nine-year-old domestic short hair cat Stox to Palm View. Stox was diagnosed with diabetes when he was only three and Dr. Waldie-Torres helped him become insulin-free. Jennifer recently thought her cat was becoming diabetic again and searched the Internet to find Dr. Waldie-Torres for help. “When you have fur children, you want the best for them,” said Jennifer. “Dr. Waldie-Torres gives great advice, never rushes and always does what is best for the pet. You can tell that she really loves her job. It is well worth the drive.” Dr. Waldie-Torres is a big proponent of spaying and neutering when owners do not want their pets to produce litters. that have not had the procedure since it can decrease the risk of developing certain cancers and helps prevent unwanted litters. She works with the Cat Network to provide low cost spays and neuters for stray cats to help control pet overpopulation. She also works with 1 Lucky Dog Rescue, a non-profit organization that helps abused, abandoned, unwanted and neglected pets. She offers low cost medical care for the rescue animals and makes sure that they are suitable for adoption. Dr. Waldie-Torres has also helped connect pets with their owners when someone drops a lost pet at the office and has been known to find a home for a pet that is unwanted or rescued. Last month, she found a home for Eva and Glade, two kittens that were rescued from the Everglades. n Sept. 28, Jews around the world will begin celebrating the High Holy Days, which encompass the ten days from the beginning of Rosh Hashanah through the end of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Many will attend services in their respective synagogues. Others who are unaffiliated, however, may be searching for a place to go. This is the first year that Shema Koleinu will be offering High Holy Day worship services at the Miramar Cultural Center for anyone wishing to attend. Cantor Debbi Ballard, and her father, Rabbi Steve Spiegel will be leading the services. “We are not Reform, Conservative or Renewal,” said Ballard. “We are just Jewish. The services will be family friendly, understandable, relevant, musical and moving.” Ballard started Shema Koleinu, Hebrew for “hear our voices,” in September 2010. The “synagogue without walls” provides quality Jewish education, lifecycle events, and community outreach for unaffiliated and interfaith families and individuals throughout South Florida. “We are not defined by membership, but by action,” said Ballard. “We serve all who wish to connect with their Jewish roots, through community, charity, and prayer, and provide acceptance and inclusion for all who seek it.”

legally speaking Mortgage Lender Myths They Want You to Believe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

ost mortgage lenders and servicers are taking advantage of the public’s sense of desperation and lack of information to strong-arm homeowners into signing one-sided loan modification agreements. Prior to signing any loan modification agreement or making any other significant decision affecting your home loan, it is critical that every homeowner be fully aware of the following “myths” that most mortgage lenders want you to believe.

Myth No. 1: If I signed for a bad loan, I have to suffer the consequences of that decision. In reality, federal and state laws impose severe penalties on lenders that engaged in predatory lending practices. These penalties include cancellation of the entire loan and/or a refund of all payments made by the borrower, including any down payment. More importantly, these penalties and remedies related to the original loan transaction may even be available against your current lender. Myth No. 2: Once a foreclosure is filed, the bank can immediately seize your bank accounts, garnish your wages and/or repossess any vehicles you own to satisfy your mortgage debt. Florida law prevents any lender from seizing any assets until after a final judgment of foreclosure, and only after authorization from the Court is obtained to satisfy a “deficiency judgment” (i.e., the difference between the amount owed to the bank and the amount for which the property sold at the foreclosure sale). Myth No. 3: If you are negotiating a loan modification with your lender, they cannot proceed with a foreclosure of your home. This is absolutely false. Actually, lenders can and will use the foreclosure process, especially during a loan modification application, as a means of coercing the homeowner to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement that may even contain a provision where the homeowner gives up all defenses and claims he/she may possess against the lender. Don’t sign any modification or forbearance agreement without first consulting with a qualified attorney in the area of foreclosure defense. Myth No. 4: The lender will act in good faith to offer you the best terms possible during a loan modification. In actuality, the lender’s only concern is their “bottom line.” If the deal does not make sense financially to them, they will force you to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement, or attempt to force you out of your home through a foreclosure process. Most importantly, never assume what you are being told by the mortgage company is the complete truth. he City of Miramar’s senior centers recently received national recognition for their outstanding and exemplary service. The Florida Association of Senior Centers presented the Miramar centers with the prestigious Florence R. Goldmann Award and named them as Senior Center of the Year. The award, established in 1993 as a tribute to the FASC’s first president Flo Goldmann, is given to nationallycertified senior centers that have demonstrated outstanding service to the aging community. The City of Miramar operates two senior centers, located at 2801 SW 186 Avenue and 6700 Miramar Parkway, which serve more than 2,800 seniors. “We have created a gathering place to enrich the lives of all seniors in the community,” said Kim Morrow-Lopez, social services program coordinator. Both centers are designed for individuals over the age of fifty-five who want to engage in activities, attend outings, receive assistance and be a part of a larger community of like-minded individuals. The senior centers offer a wide array of services and most of them are free. They provide door-to-door transportation from home to the senior centers, as well as to grocery stores, banks, medical appointments and other places. There are many opportunities for personal enrichment through health and wellness programs, safety programs, health screenings, exercise programs, lectures and presentations. There are activities like sewing, Bingo and dominoes, as well as parties, dances and special events, including a Valentine’s Dance, Senior Citizen Day Picnic and Senior Prom. There are also daily outings and overnight trips to places like the Bahamas and Mexico and intergenerational activities with Miramar’s Early Childhood Program. hild support in Florida is based upon a number of factors. They include the number of minor children in the household, the income of the parents, and the amount of time each parent will spend with the minor children. Time is defined as overnight visits. A parent who spends considerable time with his/her child(ren) will not have the time considered if the visits do not result in an overnight stay. To some people that “rule” may seem a bit unfair and in some instances it probably is. That is the state of the law however as of today. The child support guidelines were amended many years ago to include a new formula (commonly referred to as the Gross Up Method), which takes into consideration the amount of time the parent who is paying child support spends with his/her child. Once again, time spent refers only to overnights. It was realized that the more time a parent has with his/her children, the more money he/she will directly spend on them for food, clothing and even utilities like electricity and water. Initially, the amount of

overnights to qualify for this reduction was a minimum of 40% of the overnights or approximately 12 each month. That number was recently reduced to 20% each month or approximately 6 per month. The formula however still gave a greater reduction in support to someone who had the children for 40% of the overnights than for someone who had them for 20% of the overnights. A few days ago I received an E-mail concerning the new guidelines and their calculations. It appears that when the guidelines were modified, a problem arose. The problem is that under certain circumstances, child support which is calculated under the “Gross Up Method”, results in a greater monthly amount than if the normal or “Non Gross Up Method” is used. What that means is that someone who is spending less time with the minor children maybe paying less child support than someone who spends a more substantial time. This was clearly not the intent of the law. This appears to occur when one party has minimal income and the other earns over $4,000 a month and the paying parent has the child(ren) for a minimum of 73 nights and a maximum of 90 overnights (yearly). To test this “glitch,” in the guidelines I prepared my own scenario using those numbers and in fact the outcome was as indicated. The child support was greater using the “Gross Up Method”. There are arguments that can be made to a judge to correct this mistake and make it equitable. If you fall within these guidelines you may want to schedule a consultation. Love is not supposed to be painful. Yes, there is pain involved in any relationship but if it is painful most of the time then something is not working. You may be pretending that a person is someone he or she is not. Or, you may be spending precious time trying to get someone to love you in a certain way, when that person cannot or will not. It is time to let it go. It is time to let go of your insistence that they become the person you want them to be, as well as let go of demanding that they give you something they are neither willing nor capable of giving. This does not necessarily mean that you have to immediately stop loving that person. It means that you love them for who they are. You release that person to be who he or she actually is. You stop trying to make that person be someone he or she is not. You deal with your feelings and walk away from the destructive cycle of broken promises, high demands, and endless frustrations. Usually tests are normal, and fibromyalgia is solely diagnosed by symptoms and examination. There are many ways to treat fibromyalgia. Regular exercise is absolutely essential to reduce pain and cope with the associated depression. Some people even require therapy or counseling by a licensed psychologist. Academy of Arts Develops Well Rounded Dancers in a Family Environment By Debby Teich

Her students have been accepted to some of the most prestigious schools in the country, including the Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Orlando Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Washington Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Nutmeg Conservatory, Walnut Hill and the Rock. They have also earned dance scholarships to the Chicago College for the Performing Arts, Hartt School of Music, Florida State University, New World School of the Arts, University of Central Florida and more. The Academy’s Performing Group is made up of students that have volunteered their time to be a part of many of the shows performed throughout the year. The children are not auditioned, but rather given a chance to enjoy the art of dance. The focus is not on dance recitals or competitions, but rather the training offered by an excellent dance education. Some of the costumes used in the performances have been sewn by moms, dads, and grandmothers or have been used in the past to make the program affordable to everyone.

There are no recital fees, no rehearsal fees, no high-cost costumes, no videos and no high-priced tickets to purchase. All of the faculty has had professional careers and are highly qualified, certified instructors. At every level, students are only taught by professionals who give them the personal attention they deserve. There is always a long waiting list of dancers hoping for a coveted spot. “We develop clean dancers and educate them using different theories used worldwide,” said Director Rebeca Russo-Columna. “They have an opportunity to express their own individual style as they learn to become well-rounded performers in the areas of dance, vocals, acting and musical theater. When they leave the Academy they are prepared to dance anywhere.” There are 750 kids enrolled in the school and Rebeca is involved in the enhancement and development of every one of them. She is at the school from opening to closing. All of the students benefit from her extensive training and experience. Rebeca has lived her life according to the motto “there is no substitute for excellence” and expects the same from her students. At age 13, she was awarded a full merit scholarship to

The Academy’s Junior and Senior Dance Company is comprised of very talented young dancers that have been auditioned to be a part of the special program. The Company represents a dancing group of the community and for the community. It is an intense program which includes training in all areas of dance needed to prepare the students for a professional career in dance. These dancers are not only taught by the staff at the Academy, but are also given opportunities to work with guest artists to help them reach their full potential in dance. In the past, many of the Academy’s older students have had to choose between obtaining a college degree and pursuing a career in dance. The Academy recently formed a Professional Company so students like like Jordan Anders and Rachel Martin no longer have to choose. Rachel started at the Academy when she was five years old and has decided to pursue a career in dance. Unlike most students, she was able to find a way to dance while she studies. She is currently studying at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from its affiliate, the University of Florida. She is a member of the Academy’s Professional Company, Metropolitan Ballet of Florida, which will be making its debut this fall.

orning sickness. Weight gain. Skin changes. When you are pregnant, it can feel as though your body no longer belongs to you. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. But don’t despair, a mommy makeover can help you look your best again. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The breasts also grow due to weight gain and to prepare for nursing. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, also known as stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result may be smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help.

Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. ▸▸ Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.
