order to keeping gardening costs to minimum. He will talk about the rewards of growing plants from seeds and cuttings, as well as asexual and sexual plant propagation methods, with an emphasis on easy to follow rules of thumb for success. The Miramar Community Garden is a living classroom where people can learn about the sources of fresh produce, receive vocational training in sustainable agriculture, and discover healthy living and the importance of environmental stewardship. At present, there are 15 active gardeners that take care of 650 pots filled with plants such as mustard greens, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes and more. Scott Lewis has been volunteering since the garden opened almost two years ago. “It is a great place to learn about gardening,” said Scott. “All of the volunteers share their recipes, knowledge and excitement.” The Community Garden recently released a calendar full of activities and different ways to get involved. On Monthly Workdays, the Boy Scouts, fire fighters, students and other volunteers help in the garden. During the Plant Sales, the public can buy fruits, vegetables and herbs harvested from the garden. On Casual Thursdays, the public is invited to meet the gardeners and help with the crops.

The series, titled “Essential Knowledge for Organic Growers,” will teach avid gardeners and beginners the key concepts of urban farming and how to apply this knowledge to specific growing strategies and techniques in the South Florida climate. The lecture series will be presented by Miguel Afonso, who is an expert in aquaponics, permaculture, food security planning, vertical growing, roof top gardens, bioshelters and urban food production. It begins with “The Basics of Soil,” which will be held on Feb. 8, from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m., at the Miramar Branch Library, 2050 Civic Center Place. Miguel will provide an introduction to soil science in a practical and easy to understand format. He will also discuss soil structure, soil microbiology, soil nutrients and the basic diagnosis of common plant nutrient deficiencies. In the second lecture, Miguel will explore what growers need to know about water and how it affects the health of the garden. Since not all water is equal, he will address the different sources of water in the urban environment and how each of these help or hinder the garden. He will also explore how to capture and store healthy rainwater. During the last lecture, Miguel will teach attendees how to propagate plants in

In the past two years, the Tour de Broward has raised more than half a million dollars for the hospital. “This year, we hope to surpass our annual goal of $300,000, but also make this event a ‘must go’ for families across Broward County and beyond,” said Al Fernandez, president and CEO of ANF Group, Inc. In 2011, the hospital treated 357 pediatric patients for cancer, representing 8,808 visits, with over 60 newly diagnosed cases. Holly Davidson’s nephew was one of them. She plans to participate in the family walk with her husband and three children, ages, 5 to 8. “Joe DiMaggio is an incredible facility,” said Davidson. “I am looking forward to a day of family fun and the opportunity to support an excellent cause.”

The band is well known for reproducing classic horn-influenced hits like Santana’s “Smooth,” Ricky Martin’s “Livin La Vida Loca,” and Cherry Poppin Daddies “Zoot Suit Riot.” The evening will include the reveal of the “Deal or No Deal” drawings where 100% of the proceeds go to the scholarship fund that offers scholarships to local graduating seniors going to college. Barbara Fielding plans to attend for the second year. “It is fun to mingle with friends and business associates,” said Fielding. “The food is amazing and it is a great way to sample signature dishes from restaurants in the area. Last year, I met a caterer that I used for a big party I threw.”

The selection will be a little easier, for the more than 2,000 people that are expected to attend the Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce’s 7th Annual “A Sip of Wine, A Taste of Heaven,” on Feb. 18, at the Miramar Town Center, 2300 Civic Way, from 7 to 11 p.m. All who attend are in for a fun-filled evening of food and wine tasting, prizes, and silent auction. The event is presented by 7-year returning title sponsor Tropical Financial Credit Union, which is headquartered in Miramar. Constellation Brands is the wine sponsor. Attendees will have an opportunity to sample signature dishes from local restaurants, caterers, bistros and private chefs. They can also try a variety of wines, as well as other beverages like martinis, Vienna coffee and cappuccino. Artists from the South Florida area will be displaying some of their work. There will also be a silent auction with something for everyone. Some of the items include unique collectable sports

league of clergy Meetings Keep residents informed By DeBBy Teich

I

n an effort to educate MiraMar residents

on a variety of topics, City of Miramar Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis will be holding her fourth League of Clergy meeting, on March 2, at 6:30 p.m. at Saint John the Baptist Coptic Orthodox Church, 7851 Riviera Blvd., in Miramar. Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes will educate religious leaders on recent changes to the voting process in preparation for the election in November. As the daughter of a minister, Commissioner Davis knows first-hand the impact that churches and various other places of worship have on the community. “I grew up with the very real understanding that the first point of contact for the needy was the church,” said Commissioner Davis. “There, people could always find the help they needed, even if it came directly from the minister.” Davis says that many parishioners turn to their pastors when they need food, a place to live or help paying their bills. As Commissioner, she is aware of many local, state and federal assistance programs that are available to residents. Eight months ago, she initiated the bi-monthly League of Clergy meetings as a way to disseminate some of the information. “As an elected

official, I have a duty and a commitment to serve all of our residents and provide them with the help they need or refer them to other resources that can provide them with assistance,” said Commissioner Davis. During the League of Clergy meetings, Commissioner Davis facilitates dialog between approximately 25 religious leaders and various agencies. Everyone has the same goal of reaching out to the community at large. Past guests have included the newly appointed Broward School Superintendent, Mr. Robert Runcie, School Board Member Patti Good, as well as Miramar’s economic development director and community development director. Commissioner Davis is hoping that more places of worship will join the initiative. For information, send an email to apdavis@ci.miramar. fl.us or call 954-602-3130.

W

elcoMe to 2012! let us hope that the new

Year brings the improvements we desire and optimism for the beginnings of a continued upswing of the economy for everyone in our community. We have seen an extended period of economic difficulties with high unemployment and tight budgets, but as Americans we have always shown the kind of strength and perseverance that helps us weather any storm. However, in the current politiPembroke Pines cal and economic climate, a lack of trust has pervaded both the Mayor Frank C. Ortis political and business environments. Members of the public expect higher ethical standards from both public and private sector organizations and agencies. There is a desire for the ability to trust those with whom we interact on a daily basis and those who are entrusted with the honorable duty of driving public policy, building public/private sector partnerships, and upholding the public good. Broward County has recently passed a Code of Ethics Ordinance to create a level of oversight which not only protects the public but helps public officials build public trust. Of course, there will always be areas of policy on which there will be disagreement, but disagreement should not choke and disable the process.

Sometimes that lack of trust is instigated by a reporter doing sensationalist journalism; everything should be based on facts, not a cut-and-paste news report, but the entire answer from the accused. Too many times issues are “lobbed out” in an incendiary manner, and you never hear anything else about it, but the stigma remains. I truly believe that the people deserve a responsible public servant dedicated to serving the public every day. That, to me, ensures the trust needed from the electorate. This conviction is also the foundation of my belief that public trust engenders civil discourse. People have genuine concerns and problems which they would like to have resolved. Dealing with issues and problems starts with good communication; miscommunication between constituents and public servants delays the process of solving problems, and resolving issues. I look forward to a new year of improved communications, civil discourse, and restored public trust. The fact that we live in these great United States should empower every community to be involved in civic life to strengthen community relationships, and to work towards restoring the best quality of life that our citizens have come to expect. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me at fortis@ppines. com or call my office at 954-435-6505.

Parrillada el Gaucho

By DeBBy Teich

f you are looking for an unforgettable dining experience, try

Parrillada el Gaucho. This steak lovers’ paradise is the first authentic Uruguayan Steakhouse in Miramar. The extensive menu offers a variety of cuts of beef, chicken, pork, sausage and lamb, as well as delicious seafood and pasta dishes. It has become a hotspot for lunch meetings, happy hours and late night dinners. Born and raised in Uruguay, Calos Lehite opened Parrillada el Gaucho more than two years ago. Unable to find a place to eat authentic food from his native country, he decided to open his own restaurant. Carlos eats at the restaurant every day and takes his food seriously. “Good food makes people happy,” said Carlos. “We use only the freshest and finest ingredients in our food.” Many of the recipes were passed down from Carlos’ family.

La Parrillada

served with French Fries, Potato Salad and a Gaucho Salad. There are also a variety of house specialties, including Steak, Chicken and Fish Milanesa, as well as Milanesa Napolitana (breaded steak with ham, cheese and pomodoro). If you are in the mood for Seafood, chose from Salmon, Tilapia, Red Snapper and Mahi Mahi, cooked the way you like Flank Steak

Some recipes also belong to Uruguayan head chefs Oscar and William. Since most patrons like to eat late, the restaurant stays open until the last person arrives. There is also live music on Friday nights. “We want our customers to relax, enjoy themselves and have fun,” Carlos continued. Many like to start Milanesa with appetizers like the delicious homemade Empanadas (meat, chicken, ham and cheese, corn), Chorizo (Uruguayan sausage) and Fried Calamari. There are also a variety of Salads, including the Caesar Salad and Gaucho Salad, and both can be ordered with grilled chicken, grilled steak or grilled shrimp. Most of the main courses are cooked on the “parrilla” or “grill”. Customers can watch as their entrées sizzle and roaring fires from the open grill light up the kitchen. Some of the popular grilled items include Filet Mignon, Skirt Steak and Flank Steak. One of the best ways to sample grilled items is to order the restaurant’s specialty, La Parrillada. This sampler, served on table-top grills, is great for sharing and includes Short Ribs, Flank Steak, Chicken, Sausage, Blood Sausage, Sweetbread and Tripe, as well as a Gaucho Salad and one side. Some of many sides include Spanish Rice, Potato Salad, Mashed Sweet Potatoes and Fried Sweet Plantains. Chivitos (with lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, ham, mozzarella, bacon, fried egg) are also a Uruguayan favorite. The menu includes Steak, Chicken and Fish Chivitos,

it, and then add a sauce (garlic, lemon butter, sautéed onions and peppers or garlic, parsley and salt.) Many of the typical Uruguayan dishes are heavily influenced from Italian cooking. Choose from 13 different Pastas, then pick your Sauce and add your favorite Toppings. There are also Pizzas, which are cooked in a brick oven. Create your Flan own or chose from Cheese, Pepperoni, Chorizo or Vegetarian. No dinner is complete without one of the restaurant’s decadent desserts, made fresh by a Uruguayan pastry chef. The house specialty is the Postre Chaja, cake filled with peaches and dulce de leche, with sugary meringue on the outside. Other popular desserts are Crepes filled with dulce de leche and topped with ice cream, Flan and Arrollado. Carlos understands that many of his customers are on a tight budget. The restaurant offers lunch specials starting at $6.90 and dinner specials starting at $7.90. Happy Hour is from 4 to 7 p.m., on weekdays, with two for one beers and wine. Parrillada el Gaucho is the perfect solution for your next corporate or social event. Leave the grilling to the restaurant and truly enjoy your next event. Whether you want the food delivered or plan to fill the restaurant with your guests, the new lunch and dinner Party Menus will make your function a memorable success. Parrillada el Gaucho is located at 11386 Miramar Pkwy, in Miramar, on the corner of Miramar Parkway and Red Road. For information, call 954-431-0448 or visit www.parrilladagaucho.com.

pring is in the air! it is a wonderful tiMe to

enjoy everything outdoors, especially in Miramar. I am sure you have all noticed by now that many great restaurants have opened up in our city. I remember a time, not too long ago, when many of us would have to drive to that “city to the north of us” to go out to eat. That has all changed. We now host a world renowned college of culinary arts, Le Cordon Bleu, which not only offers an elegant restaurant with affordable three-course lunch and dinner menus, but Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley also single classes for those who wish to peek into the world of gastronomy. I am awestruck at the variety that we get to choose from. Now, I am in a delightful quandary when deciding where to go to eat. It is so pleasing to take out of town friends nearby for a bite to eat. However, what I am most anxiously looking forward to is the upcoming “Sip and Taste” event where many of our local restaurants will be promoting their specialties all in one night! The City of Miramar, the Miramar/Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce and the title sponsor, Tropical Financial Credit Union, will be hosting the 8th Annual “A Sip of Wine…A Taste of Heaven” on Saturday, February 18, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Miramar Town Center, located at 2300 Civic Center Place. The event will feature food and wine samplings from over 40 vendors, a live jazz band, silent auction, and awards for the best food tasting and booth décor. With a little under 2,000 people in attendance the past several years, attendees will savor the flavor of a variety of restaurants, caterers, bistros and private chefs from the area. Artists from the South Florida area will feature their masterpieces and a silent auction will have something for everyone with some unique collectable sports memorabilia, art pieces, spa packages, business services and more. The evening will also include the “Deal or No Deal” drawings, where 100% of the proceeds go to the scholarship fund that offers scholarships to local graduating seniors going to college. Earlier in the evening, there will be a VIP event, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the Miramar Cultural Center/Arts Park Banquet Hall. The Miramar Cultural Center will host the exclusive VIP reception where the sponsors, vendors and dignitaries are honored one hour prior to the main event. This is a limited ticketed event. I invite you to come and experience an evening of delectable elegance at “Sip and Taste.”You can indulge in a selection of heavenly wine tasting and decadent food temptations from a selection of local area restaurants and caterers, while listening to live music, engaging in the silent auction and mingling with community and business leaders. Call the chamber office for more information at 954-432-9808 or log onto the website: www.MiramarPembrokePines.org. I hope to see you all at the Sip N Taste to enjoy the variety of delicious treats that our great City now offers! For information on the City of Miramar, visit www.ci.miramar.fl.us.

the truth about cellulite By eLLen LaTham

C

Want Younger, Healthier Legs?

ellulite is a “diMpling” appearance on the thighs,

butt and sometimes stomach and arms that exists in 85% of women. So, what is cellulite? First you must understand the layers from the skin on down in our bodies. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. Under that layer is the dermis. The next layer is two layers of what is called subcutaneous fat (this is fat under the skin). Cellulite originates from the first layer of this fat. Small portions of this fat protrude into the dermis and that is where the dimpling comes from.

how can i lose cellulite?

You can improve the look of cellulite. The following are the facts, so listen carefully. ▸ The number one way to deal with cellulite is to eat healthy and follow a specific exercise program that combines cardiovascular intervals and muscle work (exactly like Ellen’s Ultimate Workout and the Orangetheoryfitness workout.) ▸ Use very targeted muscle work for hips, thighs and butt, with squats and lunges at the top of the list. ▸ Don’t invest your hopes and money in liposuction, subcision, injectables, skin kneading and manipulation techniques, thermotherapy, topical ointments and herbals for cellulite management, as there is very little evidence supporting their effectiveness.

do slender women have cellulite?

Yes. It is found in all size women, yet weight gain does worsen the condition.

why is cellulite Mainly in the thighs and buttock areas of women?

Women have a higher percentage of body fat than men. There are five times more fat cells in these areas of a woman’s body compared to other sites of her body.

At Vein and Vascular of South Florida we specialize in treating ugly varicose and spider veins. We are one of the first in South Florida to offer the new FDA ClariVein® procedure to treat large varicose veins. This procedure can be done in less than 15 minutes in the office. There are usually no incisions. Patients can go back to work the next day.

So why not call Dr. Fox and say good-bye to ugly legs? Susan Fox, DO, FSVM, RPVI, Boa featured on Channel 10 News, is a pioneer in performing minimally invasive vein procedure. She has lectured extensively around the country on the treatment of varicose veins.

is cellulite hereditary?

Yes. Research has shown a genetic predisposition for cellulite to develop. The way your mother distributed fat in her body will likely be very similar to the way you do.

will smoking worsen the appearance of cellulite?

Yes. Cigarette smoke weakens the formation of collagen. Collagen is the main protein in connective tissue. When connective tissue is weak, the fat protrudes more easily and the appearance of cellulite is increases. Ellen Latham, MS owner of Ellen’s Ultimate Workout and Pilates Studio, 5173 S. students in Miramar and dubai are Pen Pals By DeBBy Teich

more about life in another country, they turn to the Internet for help. Students at Coral Cove Elementary School in Miramar are learning the old fashioned way. They recently sent handwritten letters to pen pals at a school in Dubai, U.A.E, and are eagerly waiting for a response from their peers. The students are participating in “Write Stuff - The Art of Penmanship,” a program developed by the Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark. “In the technology age, it is important for students to know the fundamentals of reading and writing,” said Camasha Cevieux, deputy director of the Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark. “This program provides students with an opportunity to practice their skills and engage with students of the same age on the other side of the world and learn about their culture.” More than 360 Coral Cove students, in kindergarten through fifth grade, wrote letters to their peers at the Greenfield Community School in Dubai, an international school with students from more than 55 countries. They were instructed to focus on culturally-themed topics. They included information about themselves, wrote about holidays and customs in the United States and described some of the things they experience on a daily basis. They also had many questions for their pen pals. Many of the students are hoping to meet their new friends one day. “The students were so excited to participate in the project and learn about other cultures,” said Lesley Giraudy-Fahie, 2nd grade teacher. “The assignment also required them to express themselves clearly, as

well as to use correct grammar and good penmanship.” The school held an assembly to celebrate the first mailing. The students dropped the letters into a commemorative mail box and a representative from the United States Postal Service explained the many steps involved in delivering them all the way to Dubai. The mailbox will remain at the school for the next round of letters. This is just one of the many educational programs offered by the Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark. The programs combine the resources of the school district, local artists, arts organizations and the Miramar Cultural Center with student experiences to demonstrate learning through the arts. They provide a portal to education through entertainment, theater productions and other events. “We are always seeking opportunities to enhance student learning,” said Valerie Williams, Education Program Coordinator. “We are hoping to implement programs in all of the Miramar schools by the end of the school year.” The Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark is located at 2400 Civic Center Place, in Miramar. author reads to PPces-west students By DeBBy Teich

lthough students at city of

Pembroke Pines Charter School West Elementary Campus are used to reading books, rarely do they get a chance to meet the author. Last month, author Jennifer Hartvickson visited the school and read “Mister Lemur’s Train of Thought” aloud to the students. “The author infuses her poetry with rich vocabulary and humor,” said Marta Tápanes, Curriculum Specialist for PPCES-West. “Her visit stimulated the students to become excited about reading, writing and creating their own stories.” “Mister Lemur’s Train of Thought” is a 156page collection of 66 short, rhyming stories that wrap educational concepts in engaging rhyme. To get the most out of the visit, the students did several things to prepare. They read aloud Jennifer Hartvickson speaks to students. some of the poems/stories written by the author. They also participated in assignments tied into Mister Lemur, who is a fun and subtly educational character. Mister Lemur strives to interest elementary students in science, geography and creative writing and teachers implemented a project in each of those subject areas. Parents and students were encouraged to visit the book’s website to become familiar with its clever rhymes and to download coloring pages, poetry lessons, word finds, stories, songs and more. A copy of the book was also available in the school library.

During the assembly, Hartvickson introduced the students to lemurs, Madagascar, problem solving, writing and illustrating, while emphasizing the importance of goal setting and planning. She talked to them about achieving their dreams and the importance of doing something that they love. She ended with a question and answer period and the students were very inquisitive. They wanted to know how she gets ideas for her books, how she turns her ideas into a story and much more. After the assembly, Hartvickson signed copies of her book. “The kids were so excited to meet a real author,” said Tápanes. “This was one of the best assemblies the school has ever had.” To help nurture the excitement, Tápanes organized a contest titled “Your Own Mister Principal Devarn Flowers shares her Lemur Story”. Students are working indiautographed book with a student. vidually and in teams to create a one-page illustrated rhyming story that will be displayed on the Mister Lemur website. Prizes will be awarded for grade-level winners. The Pembroke Pines Charter School West Elementary Campus is located at 1680 SW 184th Ave. For information, visit www.pinescharter.net. s was published in an article by david Jolly

and Mata De La Baume in the New York Times in December, health authorities in France issued a recommendation suggesting that 30,000 French women remove defective breast implants that were manufactured in France and distributed throughout Europe, Australia, and South America. Xavier Bertrand, the French health minister, recommended that recipients of these implants have an “explant” procedure as a preventive, nonemergency measure, even if there were no clinical indications that the implants had been leaking substandard silicone. The implants in question are made by a French company, Poly Implants Prothèses, PIP, which was closed last year. This company used an inferior, industrial-grade silicone in the implant shell, and they are more likely to rupture or ooze than those made from medical grade surgical silicone. The French authorities stressed that the leaked gel carries no known link to cancer, focusing instead on how it can irritate body tissues and cause damaging inflammation. No PIP implants were known to have been used in the United States, but there are concerns over an unknown number of women who traveled to South America for lessexpensive implants as is common in South Florida. Thus far, no country has reported a rupture rate as high as France’s, five percent, and most have issued statements meant to reassure implant recipients. Health concerns rose sharply in November when a French woman, whose implant had ruptured, died from a rare cancer called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. French media reported that she was the eighth woman with the PIP implants to have died of cancer, a figure for which the statistical significance is unclear. Health authorities in Britain, where some 40,000 women received the implants, said it was not recommending “routine removal”. As quoted in the New York Times: “We recognize the concern that some women who have these implants may be feeling, but we currently have no evidence of any increase in incidents of cancer associated with these implants and no evidence of any disproportionate rupture rates other than in France,” the British agency said in a statement. In Brazil, where about 25,000 implants were used, the National Agency of Sanitary Vigilance recommended that recipients be examined by their doctors. Chile’s Public Health Institute asked doctors who performed implants to contact patients to explain the emerging health concerns. The health ministry in Venezuela and Columbia did not make any recommendations about removing these implants where approximately 15,000 women have had PIP implants. Breast implants used in the United States are manufactured by two major companies - Allergan (makers of Botox) and Mentor corporation (now part of Johnson and Johnson). These silicone implants have been studied extensively in controlled randomized clinical trials in patients and in laboratory experiments. Their breast implants, the Natrelle (Allergan) and Memory Gel (Mentor) have been found to be safe. The United States Institute of Medicine and the Food and Drug Administration determined that there was no evidence that these silicone implants were harmful. A spokeswoman for the French health products safety agency said it was possible that the rupture rates in other countries were lower because reporting was still low. The problems with these poorly manufactured implants from France and the apparent substandard oversight by French Health officials should make prospective patients think twice before going to other countries for surgical procedures for cost reasons. If you have had a breast augmentation with silicone implants in a country other than the United States, you should contact your surgeon and ask if the PIP implants were used. is Your Marriage a diamond in the rough? By aLina GaSTeSi-De aRmaS, ma, meD, Lmhc

ccording to the geMological institute of

America, diamonds are graded by four characteristics: cut, carat (weight), clarity, and color. All four of these properties determine how much a diamond is worth. As a credentialed marriage professional I have developed my own 4C grading system for marriages. See how your marriage measures up to these standards:

commitment – Commitment is initially declared as “I want to marry you,” then promised, “I promise to stay married to you till death do us part,” and finally put into practice through daily words, deeds and choices. Too many people believe that after they have taken the necessary steps to secure a marriage commitment, they can relax in the comfort that their work is done. Unfortunately, when problems occur the commitment is tested and the promises are questioned, broken, and eventually taken back. The measure of the quality of that commitment is in the shared objective and responsibility between spouses {through the good, the bad and the ugly} to assist and invest in their own as well as their partner’s personal growth, development, and happiness. You see, it does not count to only be committed to the relationship when things are going well or your way. Commitment is often tested and the strength of the promise is revealed by the outcome of that test. communication – Communication is using the power of language to speak and listen with the full intent and desire to understand and be understood. In the initial stages of the relationship communication seems “flawless” yet with time, neglect and misunderstandings; what was once quite clear becomes “clouded.” Quality communication takes practice and determination; its results are priceless.

compromise – Although it occurs in the daily lives of all couples, compromise is one of the most difficult tasks to master. It involves allowing things to get in the way of your ideal for the sake of your relationship. Each person has their own ideas of their perfect scenario. The sparkle and brilliance of a marriage will be felt as each individual consciously focuses on compromise as the ultimate outcome of most disagreements. Remember every time the individual wins the couple loses, however, every time the couple comes up with a compromise the marriage wins. compassion – Compassion is a deep awareness of and sympathy for another’s suffering. Your spouse will fall short of your expectations, may break their promises, and may sometimes make, what seems to be, an unforgivable mistake. Once your spouse, the person who has wronged you, apologizes, attempts to make amends and is contrite in doing so, the practice of your promise of commitment will be demonstrated in your ability to forgive them. During the search for forgiveness each will need empathy for the other’s suffering; whether they were the victim or the perpetrator. When compassion is strong, there is a natural desire for what is best for the other person, wanting at least to understand their suffering and ultimately wishing to alleviate it. The qualities of healthy marriages as with diamonds are not always visible to the naked eye. In fact, a diamond is initially found as a rough stone that requires specialized knowledge, tools, equipment, and techniques to reveal its brilliance. If your marriage needs some polishing be sure to call Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, at A Place for Growth, 954-384-9373, or visit her website www. APlaceforGrowth.com.

reasons why You need uninsured Motorist coverage By hoWaRD ciTRon

T

here are Many reasons why you need uninsured

Motorist (UM) Coverage, whether your vehicle is a car, truck or motorcycle: ▸ More than 50% of drivers on Florida roads have little or minimal insurance. ▸ Many Florida drivers have no auto insurance at all. ▸ With UM coverage, your own insurance company may pay for bodily injuries you or your passengers suffer when the other driver is at fault and has: ▸ no insurance ▸ too little insurance to cover all your damages. ▸ You are the victim of a hit-and-run accident. ▸ Although UM coverage is not mandatory in Florida, it is a relatively inexpensive safeguard. ▸ In Florida, your Personal Injury Protection (PIP), or no-fault, benefits carry only a $10,000 limit. So there may be instances when your no-fault benefits will not cover a loss in full. Most people do not realize how many drivers on the road in South Florida either drive with the minimum amount of coverage required by the law or without any insurance at all. Under Florida law, the only coverage which an individual must carry is property damage coverage and personal injury protection. This insurance coverage does not pay for the victim’s medical expenses, lost wages, or injuries. What I have come to learn is that many individuals do not understand or realize the importance of their personal automobile insurance coverage, and do not carry uninsured motorist coverage, which protects individuals and their families from uninsured motorists on the roadway. As an attorney, my practice involves a great deal of automobile accident claims and litigation. I receive at least one call a week where an individual is the victim of an automobile accident, and the person who negligently caused the accident does not have insurance coverage to pay for any of the victim’s medical bills or injuries. Unfortunately I am forced to decline many of these cases, because there is no liability insurance available to pay for their damages. The most important coverage which an individual in South Florida can carry in their automobile insurance policy is uninsured motorist coverage. The way uninsured motorist coverage works is that if you are the victim of an automobile accident, and an uninsured or underinsured driver causes the collision, you are then able to make a claim against your own insurance policy to provide coverage for medical bills and/or future pain and suffering. This can be very important specifically for individuals who are forced to miss time from work, or sustain a serious injury which may alter their ability to continue to work and engage in their regular activities. As a practicing attorney in South Florida, it is my suggestion to all drivers to pay a little extra money for their automobile insurance coverage to purchase uninsured motorist coverage. The cost of the increased premium is the only way to protect you and your family from the negligence of uninsured or under-insured drivers. Citron & Bloom has offices in both Weston and Coral Springs and handles cases involving motor vehicle accidents, slip and falls, dog bites/animal attacks, defective products, medical negligence and nursing home abuse. did not want a cat, but we had a small apartment so they gave in to my wishes and let me get a cat. “We’re dog people!” they said. I secretly prayed we’d adopt a cat that acted like a dog. Missy purred like crazy when I adopted her. When I brought her home, she immediately took to us as though we were the family she’d been waiting for. It soon became evident that Missy DID act like a dog! Missy runs to the door when my husband gets home, chases balls and drools like a dog with her tongue hanging out. She HATES fish, but loves to eat hot dogs, potato salad and edamame soy beans. Missy is unique in other ways. She sleeps on top of the backs of chairs. She doesn’t meow. She loves to go out on our screened-in porch and has made friends with the ducks that are on our lawn. Missy has been one of the best Christmas gifts ever. She is the cat with the friendly and loyal heart of a dog.

Obesity in Pets By chRiSTie WaLDie-ToRReS, DVm

T

Spring Break Social Group March 12-16

he new year is here and Most of us have Made

resolutions to be healthier. Just as it is important for us to strive for better fitness and health, it is important for our pets as well. Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder of dogs and cats. It is estimated that almost half of dogs and cats seen by veterinarians are obese. This means that they weigh at least 20% more than their ideal body weight due to excess body fat. A quick way to determine if your pet is overweight is to run your hands along their sides. If you cannot readily feel your pet’s ribs or if they weigh 15-20% more than they did as a healthy young adult (usually about a year of age), then they are considered obese or at least overweight and they should be seen by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian can formulate a weight loss plan or rule out other medical conditions that can cause weight gain or mimic obesity (such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome).

Obesity is a serious condition in pets that can lead to many health complications. Obesity increases the workload on the heart which can aggravate many heart diseases. Obese animals also have shortness of breath, are easily fatigued, and can have difficulty breathing after any exercise. Obesity has also been associated with diabetes mellitus and increases stress on joints, which can lead to or aggravate musculoskeletal problems like arthritis. In addition, obese animals are more predisposed to heat stress, gastrointestinal disorders, liver disease, skin conditions, infectious diseases and reproductive problems. Anesthesia and surgery are also riskier for an animal that is obese compared to an animal that is a healthy weight. It is never too late to get your pet on the road to a healthier weight. With your veterinarian’s guidance, your pet can get to his/her ideal weight. Ruling out medical conditions may require diagnostic testing such as bloodwork and x-rays. If these are clear, then a weight loss plan can be made. This will most likely consist of moderate exercise and a reduction in the amount of calories your pet is consuming. There are many diets available though grocery stores and pet retail stores that may help. These usually include senior, less active and light foods. Prescription diets which have a more restricted calorie content can be found at veterinary clinics. It is very important to follow your veterinarian’s guidelines though in order to ensure your pet is receiving adequate nutrients and in the case of cats, to prevent liver problems. If you suspect your pet is overweight, have him/her examined by your veterinarian. Weight loss is a long and often frustrating journey. When the reward is a healthier pet, it is worth the effort! are resolved by an agreement signed by both parties. This can be done by the parties themselves or as a result of a mediation. Although in many instances in our daily lives we can often “change our minds” after weighing a decision we may have made, this is not usually the case when dealing with legally binding agreements. It is extremely important to know this before you sign on the dotted line and not afterwards. It is not uncommon for a divorced spouse to meet with me for purposes of reviewing an Agreement that they already entered and are not happy with. I often hear “I made a mistake”, “I didn’t know what I was reading”, or “I changed my mind”. In each of those circumstances, there is probably nothing I can do to release them from a binding agreement. Unless someone can show they entered into an agreement based upon duress or fraud was involved (i.e. false financial information), it is binding and legally enforceable.

In spite of the binding nature of these Agreements, there are situations when a Modification can be sought. In order to be successful in obtaining a modification, a party must show that there has been “a substantial change of circumstance”. This change must be unanticipated at the time of the final hearing and involuntary. For instance, if someone losses his/her job due to the economy, then a modification of child support or alimony can be achieved. However, if someone quits their job or loses their job due to something they could control (i.e. stealing money), then that person could not modify their past obligation because it was not involuntary. Even if there is a substantial change of a circumstance, not everything can be modified. Child support or alimony can generally be modified if the above conditions are met. There are times, however, when certain forms of alimony cannot be modified. There are situations when alimony payments are listed in an Agreement as “non modifiable” as to amount or duration. A Parenting Plan can also be modified if the “substantial change” requirement is met and the change is in the best interests of the minor children. Agreements concerning equitable distribution cannot however be modified. I urge anyone who is considering entering into a binding written agreement to be absolutely sure that he/she can comply with the terms. Unlike many instances in life, one cannot simply change one’s mind. If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office for a free consultation at 954 385-9160.

new tools to defend residential Mortgage foreclosures By omaR J. aRcia, eSq. FoRecLoSuRe DeFenSe anD conSumeR BankRuPTcy PRoTecTion aTToRney

S

o far, two large law firMs in south florida have been forced

to close their foreclosure practice as a result of claims and court decisions that these firms provided false information in order to improperly repossess properties on behalf of their lender clients. As a result of the actions by these firms -which led to their demise – new tools have emerged to successfully defend residential mortgage foreclosures.

forensic Mortgage audit

A forensic mortgage audit involves an in depth analysis of the loan transaction by a lending compliance expert to uncover violations of federal and state lending laws committed by the original lender. These violations may even be attributable to the current lender under certain circumstances. If presented in a timely manner, the findings from a forensic mortgage audit may be used to aggressively defend a foreclosure action, to offset and reduce the amount owed on the loan obligation, and to even negotiate a worthwhile modified or restructured loan.

securitization analysis

During the real estate boom from 2003 to 2007, many lenders sold groups of mortgages in “securitized pools” to investment trusts on Wall Street. These trusts were created as investment tools that allowed lenders and investors to receive highly preferential tax treatment. In order to receive these tax benefits, however, strict regulations had to be followed. A securitization analysis by a qualified and credible firm can reveal whether an individual loan transaction was properly and timely transferred to a valid trust, i.e., was the loan properly “securitized.” If the loan obligation is proven not to have been properly securitized, an investment trust cannot foreclose.

transfer history analysis

Even if the loan is not part of an investment trust, many loans have been sold multiple times. Each time a loan was sold, certain legal transfer requirements had to be fulfilled to legalize the transfer and to allow the new transferee to foreclose, if necessary. A transfer history analysis tracks the mortgage from its originator to the true current legal owner and holder of the obligation, and also identifies any breaks in the transfer chain which could prevent the current lender from foreclosing. In some cases, this analysis has uncovered that certain lenders even forged mortgage assignment documents through the use of so-called “robo-signers” to overcome transfer issues, which led to findings of fraud and the cancellation of the mortgage debt altogether. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

estate planning

estate Planning basics By LaWRence LeVy

what basic estate planning documents should i have in place?

I advise my clients to at least have a Last Will and Testament, Durable Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy and Living Will in place. However, depending on the client’s needs and goals, some of the documents may be unnecessary or additional documents, such as a revocable or irrevocable trust agreement may be suggested. As part of the service I provide, I will review your current personal and financial situation and advise you as to your estate planning needs free of charge.

what documents should i have in place in the event of my incapacity?

While most people plan for their passing, many people don’t plan for the possibility of their incapacity, whether temporary or permanent. If you should ever become unable to take care of your own affairs due to aging, illness or accident, you should have a plan in place which you will hopefully never need. The following documents, if in place, may serve as alternative to a court imposed guardianship and assist your loved ones in the event of your incapacity: Revocable Trust Agreement, Durable Power of Attorney, Living Will, Designation of Health Care Surrogate and Designation of Preneed Guardian. The failure to have a plan for incapacity in place often result in a needless and expensive guardianship proceeding, so do not neglect to put these important documents in place while you are able to do so.

is probate something to be avoided or embraced?

I have heard the arguments against and in favor of the probate process. First, let me state that the probate process provides the legal mechanism by which assets titled in the sole name of decedent are transferred to the appropriate beneficiary. The probate process is subject to rules that may delay the final distribution of the assets of the estate, but are intended to protect all parties, including the estate’s creditors. As with many things in life, there are pros and cons to the probate process. If avoiding probate is a primary goal, there are different tools that can be used, such as a revocable trust, life estate deeds and joint ownership which can accomplish this goal.

how often do i need to review or change my estate planning documents?

If you have had a life changing event (birth of a child, death in the family, winning the lottery), you should speak to your attorney regarding the need to change your estate plan. If there is a change in the law which affects your estate planning documents, such as the recent changes to the law applying to durable powers of attorney, you should speak to your attorney to see if you need to update your documents. If you just want to change your estate plan (i.e. remove a beneficiary, change a bequest), speak to an attorney prior to trying to make such changes on your own. When in doubt, you can always call me. For information, call the Law Office of Lawrence Levy, P.A. at 954-442-6543 or send an email to larry@lawrencelevypa.com.

How old are your patients? Jaffer Medical Group caters to seniors, ages 65+. Dr. Jaffer says, “How LONG you live is not in your hands, but how WELL you live is in your grasp!” Dr. Yeny Andrade is especially proud of the Centenarians that are part of the group and enjoys hearing them tell her how young they feel. What can patients expect when they visit the office? Dr. Jaffer and his team are pas-

sionate about serving senior patients and strive to provide them with the utmost quality care. They understand that seniors have unique health concerns and create health plans that properly address the needs of each individual patient. Nurse practitioner Laurie Richardson believes that patients can change their destiny at Jaffer Medical Group. She enjoys helping and watching patients go from illness to wellness by changing their lifestyles and outlook on life.

What services does your practice offer?

Jaffer Medical Group has five centers located in Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Weston and Hallandale Beach. Each center provides full service medical care. Patients can expect immediate appointments, quick referrals to specialists, doctors on call nights/weekends and bilingual staff. All blood draws, lab work and X-Rays are done in house. Other medical services provided, but

not limited to, are minor surgeries, pulmonary function testing, wound care, ear lavage, EKG, joint injections, skin care and holistic massage.

Do you offer wellness seminars? Dr. Jaffer firmly believes in the value of Wellness Programs. He enjoys working with community centers, centers of worship and various charitable organizations to promote healthy living through his 10 Pearls of Longevity. Jaffer Medical Group also hosts Wellness Programs and Senior Events of their own. They include Breakfasts, Seminars, Bingo, Cooking with Dr. Ramirez and more. Do you have any advice to help patients increase longevity? Dr. Jaffer believes that

a key flaw in our healthcare system is that we do not spend enough money on wellness programs for patients; rather, most of the money is spent on the sick, with much of a person’s medical expenses piling up during the last few months of life. Preventative care helps minimize the destruction of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Dr. Jaffer advises most patients to work out daily to help stay strong, healthy and battle diseases.

What sets Jaffer Medical Group apart from similar practices? It is often said that an ounce

of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Dr. Jaffer is one physician in South Florida that truly integrates this belief into practice. Dr. Jaffer, his team of Primary Care Physicians and staff promote the health of the elderly to help prevent and treat diseases they may encounter before they come to the surface.

Jaffer Medical Group has five locations, which include: Memorial Hospital West: 601 N. Flamingo Rd., Suite 304, in Pembroke Pines; Mercantile Bank Plaza: 1 SW 129 Ave., Suite 405, in Pembroke Pines; 6448 Pembroke Road, in Miramar; 1855 N.
