We Have Much to be Thankful For

M

any of us take a moment to sit back and give thanks during November. At Our City Media, we have something special to be thankful for, our eighth magazine, Our City Fort Lauderdale, was launched this month! Our City Fort Lauderdale is just like this magazine – full of local community and school news stories and delivered to our readers’ mailboxes every month. We are proud that Our City Magazines are a little bit different than other magazines you might receive. We are deliberately and specifically a local magazine and strive to be your source for community and school news. We are also quite proud of our positive voice. Don’t look in these pages for gotcha journalism, crime blotters or divisive political exposés. You won’t find them. However, do look for uplifting stories such as the incredible, selfless acts our neighbors performed before, during and after the recent hurricanes. You also might find pictures of a cute little puppy or a group of students competing in a science fair. In this time of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for the wonderful group of people we work with, the incredible communities we serve, and the hard-working local businesses and advertising partners that make publishing this magazine possible.

Artists in Action Sell Ornaments to Raise Money for Senior Programs BY DEBBY TEICH

f you are looking for the perfect gift, you can find it at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center and help a great cause at the same time. This month, the Center’s Artists in Action are selling holiday ornaments to raise money for senior programs. From November 6 to January 5, the ornaments are on sale at the Activities Desk during the Center’s normal hours of operation. The Artists in Action group includes students from the Community Center’s day and evening Pottery Studio program. They donate their time, talent and supplies to help those in need. “Art can make a difference,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor for the Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center. “The Artists in Action group at the SWFP has learned that they can use their artistic talents to help others in need. They are making a difference in their community and in the world. To enrich the lives of others and be enriched… who could ask for anything more?”

Every year, at the Craft Show held in September, the Artists in Action sell their pottery to help fill the “empty bowls” of the hungry. All of the proceeds from the Empty Bowls Pottery sale benefit the Community Center’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive for needy families in the community. Through the years, they group has donated hundreds of items that have raised thousands of dollars to benefit the annual Thanksgiving food drive. “I have always taught my students that the greatest thing they can do in life is to do something for someone else,” said Leroy Daniels, who instructs the pottery class. “The Empty Bowls pottery sale is a perfect illustration of this fundamental belief.” This year, the Artists in Action added a handcrafted ornaments sale to benefit senior programs at the Center. The original pieces are made using a hand-building method. After the clay is rolled out, the shapes are cut, decorated by hand, and glazed. There are a wide variety of unique pieces with holes, so they are easy to hang. There is an $8 donation per ornament. This is not the first time that the Artists in Action have added an extra fundraiser. In 2005, students made and sold

“Blooms of Hope,” which were flower-shaped, stoneware lapel pins for Hurricane Katrina victims. In 2008, they held the first holiday ornaments sale to benefit Senior programs. The Center’s pottery classes are held throughout the year in six-week sessions for adults, 18 and older. In the class, students use hand-building and pottery wheels to create functional and non-functional high-fired stoneware pottery. Classes are offered on Wednesdays, from 9:30am - 11:30am or 7pm – 9pm. The cost is $42 per person and does not include materials.   The Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center offers adults 18 and older an opportunity to meet new people, build a support network or gather information. It is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. It is open Monday and Friday, from 8am to 5pm, and Tuesday/ Wednesday/Thursday, from 8am to 9pm. PPTOPA Presents “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Stage BY DEBBY TEICH

I

f you have always dreamed of seeing a Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theatre of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theatre at an affordable price. Through November 19, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” will be on stage for several performances. Show times are Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm, at the Susan B. Katz Theatre at the River of Grass Arts Park. There is an Italian Dinner Show on November 4 and a Senior Matinee on November 11. “We invite everyone to come see the show,” said Mina Mandel, board member. “The cast is fabulous and talented. It is an excellent value for a Broadway show!” A satire of big business and all it holds sacred, the show follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who uses a little handbook to climb the corporate ladder. With songs by Frank Loesser, this comic won both the Tony Award for Best Musical and a Pulitzer Prize. The score includes “I Believe in You,” “Brotherhood of Man” and “The Company Way.” The PPTOPA production includes Jeffrey Bruce (Director), Erika Scotti (Assistant Director), Anthony Campisi (Musical Director), Michael Biggs (Coreographer) and a talented cast. PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Broward County. It was founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated individuals who wanted to provide low cost, high quality live theater for the community, as well as opportunities for anyone interested in assisting in the creation of theater. While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and

others who volunteer their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, Tamarac, and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. PPTOPA presents four shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 6,000 people. With a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $19 to $30 for adults and $15 for children.

Weston Miracle League Kicks Off Baseball Season in Pembroke Pines BY DEBBY TEICH

T

his month, the Weston Miracle League will kick off its 11th baseball season in Pembroke Pines, giving South Florida children with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball. Once again, the stands will be packed with proud parents and volunteers shouting words of encouragement like “great hit,” “great catch” and “you can do it.” Players can join the league throughout the season, which runs from November 5 to January 28. The Weston Miracle League serves any disabled child, ages five and older, who has a desire to play baseball. Since baseball diamonds were not exactly designed with wheelchairs and walkers in mind, the Miracle League removes the barriers that keep children with disabilities off the baseball field. There is no cost to participate and previous baseball experience is not needed. All practices and games are held at Rose G. Price Park’s Miracle League Baseball Field in Pembroke Pines. The park has a field with a special rubberized surface that makes it accessible for individuals with wheelchairs or other assistive walking devices. Games are on the following Sundays, from 4pm to 5pm: ▸▸ November 5, 12, 19 ▸▸ December 3, 10, 17 ▸▸ January 7, 14, 21, 28 The atmosphere at the games is very low key and every player leaves a winner. Parents have an opportunity to take a break and relax, while their kids have fun on the field. Some 2016-17 season Players and volunteer buddies. of the players are focused on the game, and others simply want to play catch on the sideline. Each inning all of the

players have an opportunity to bat, remain safe on the bases, and score a run. For many of the kids, it is the highlight of their week. To help the athletes, the Miracle League uses volunteer “buddies” who are able-bodied peers, ages 13 or older, and they keep the players safe and ensure that everyone has a good time. The volunteers attend a variety of middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout Broward County and earn service hours for their participation. Barbara Kopec’s daughter Jackie has been involved with the Miracle League for several years. “This is Jackie’s favorite group because there is no pressure and she can be herself,” said Kopec. “It is very well organized and all of the volunteers are amazing with the kids.” Daisy Jaime’s 13-year-old son, Andres, has been in the league for the last seven years. He has learned the rules of the game, as well as how to hit the ball and play catch. “It makes me feel happy and proud seeing him enjoy a great day participating with other children and interacting with them in a positive way,” said Jaime. “The volunteers and the entire organization make it possible for Andres to be happy and enjoy playing baseball as any child should.” Rose G. Price Park is located at 901 NW 208th Avenue. For information on the Weston Miracle League, or to register online, visit www.westonmiracleleague.com or call 954-478-9694.

Pembroke Pines Resident to Take the Stage for Young Stars Showcase

SECTION CAN DO KIDS HEAD

BY DEBBY TEICH

O

n November 12, Pembroke Pines resident Cameron Wheeler, 17, will take the stage for the 8th annual Aventura Mall Young Stars Showcase at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Proceeds will benefit the Aventura Marketing Council/ Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, which funds educational outreaches through mentorships, jobs, community service projects, scholarships and working with at-promise students. Nine singers, ages 13-18, will perform melodies from the ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s, and straight through to the ‘90s. They will draw inspiration from famous vocalists including Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations and The Beatles. The theme of “Young Stars Sing the Decades” was carefully chosen to give Cameron and the other eight performers a chance to sing their own medley. Each star will sing original scores written by Moises Herrera accompanied by the Mason Pace Band, a four-piece band led by 16-year-old Mason Pace who has performed extensively throughout the country. “This year is the first time that our Young Stars will be singing with a live band,” said Gary Pyott, AMC Chairman of the Board. “The Mason Pace Band, is taking this show to another level. Everyone is very excited to see these amazingly talented youngsters perform. They are every bit as professional as you would see in as Vegas and on Broadway!” Cameron has been performing since she was in a play in the City of Pembroke Pines summer camp and

got hooked at the age of eight. She is currently a senior at American Heritage, where she is on a full musical theater scholarship. She is a singer, actor and dancer. She also plays the guitar, piano and ukulele. She recently won the Ethan Bortnick “Celebration of Music” contest and was flown to Los Angeles last month to compete with other performers for a PBS special. She is a member of the Phil and Orianne Collins’ Little Dreams Foundation, has won several local voice competitions, performed voiceover work for films, and more. She is planning to pursue music professionally, either through the theater or as a solo artist. “Singing and theater are my passions,” said Cameron. “This is where I’m the happiest and I can be creative. I love singing many styles of music, including oldies, pop, jazz and some Spanish. I also truly enjoy performing in musicals and straight plays. I especially love playing roles that challenge my vocals, as well as my acting.” Angie Green, 13, will be one of the Young Stars performing this year with Cameron. She received the Golden Buzzer from Heidi Klum on the latest season of America’s Got Talent and was fast-tracked to the live shows. Twenty-one-year old Nick Merico, also from Pembroke Pines, performed in the Young Stars Showcase last year. He has spent the past five years in the spotlight and starred in the Nickelodeon hit television show Every Witch Way, which ran for four seasons and ended in July 2015. Nick is currently

Teen Teaches Children’s Harbor Residents How to Cook BY DEBBY TEICH

F

ourteen-year-old Jamie Cohen loves to cook. She recently shared her passion with six girls, ages eight to 16, at Children’s Harbor in Pembroke Pines, a nationally accredited nonprofit agency with a mission to provide a safe harbor and support to at risk children, youth, and families – keeping brothers and sisters together, strengthening families, and guiding youth towards independence. She taught the lesson as part of her charity, “Peace Love Eat.” “I am very happy that I have the opportunity to help teach kids how to cook and possibly make a difference in their lives,” said Jamie. For her first visit, Jamie selected two easy recipes – egg white omelets and strawberry Danish with homemade jam. Each girl made several Danish for themselves and got to keep the extra ingredients, so they could continue cooking after she left. She also gave each of them a recipe book. This month, Jamie will return to teach the same group of girls how to cook chocolate chip cookies and chocolate chip pancakes. She plans to meet with them every other month. “I had an amazing time Jamie Cohen gave cooking teaching the girls at Children’s lessons at Children’s Harbor. Harbor how to cook,” said Jamie. “I taught them several cooking techniques that I hope they use in the future. They were all so excited to learn.”

Margo Dewar, Development & Systems Coordinator, said that Jaimie did a great job. “Jaime was awesome,” said Dewar. “The kids loved her. They cannot wait for her to come back to teach them more things to cook.” It all began in October 2016, when Jamie started a YouTube channel to teach teenagers how to cook easy meals with seven ingredients or less. Some of the recipes, which are all posted on her website, include: Hawaiian Chicken, Pesto Pasta, Caprese Panini, Vanilla Cupcakes, Healthy Brownies and more. She currently has over 100 subscribers. As she got better at cooking, Jamie decided to create a charity that is connected to the YouTube channel. In August 2017, she launched “Peace Love Eat” so she could begin teaching kids how to cook in person. She spent time building a website and held her first event at Children’s Harbor. “After starting my YouTube channel, I realized how much I loved teaching cooking,” said Jamie. “I think that cooking is an extremely important skill that everyone should know (even if it’s only the basics). I thought it would be a great idea to teach kids how to cook, but in person. If you learn when you are younger, it will be easier as you get older. The food I make is easy to learn and does not have too many ingredients. Also, the kids can learn different tips with cooking that can help them cook other meals too.” In the future, Jamie plans to expand her efforts to include more teenagers and possibly the elderly throughout Broward County. Pembroke Pines Residents Enjoy a Cup of Coffee with a Cop SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

W

hen Carla Banoff made her regular stop at the drive-up window of Starbucks, located at 18310 Pines Boulevard, she was surprised to learn that it was a police officer that took her order. It was all part of National Coffee With A Cop, which was held on October 4. It was an opportunity for members of the Pembroke Pines Police Department to spend time with customers. “I appreciate everything the Pembroke Pines police does for the community,” said Banoff. “It was great to see that they are out mingling with residents in a causal setting.” This is the first time that the Pembroke Pines Police Department participated in the National Coffee With A Cop event, which was started in California in 2011 as a way for police officers and citizens to learn about each other, form bonds and grew important community relationships that help weave the fabric of a better community. It brings

people together to talk over coffee (or anything else) with no agenda and no speeches - just open and honest communication. The event takes place the first Wednesday of October in in all 50 states and nine different countries in four languages.

The Pembroke Pines Police Department has participated in many other events that reach out to adults and children to build relationships in the community through conversation. Some of the recent ones include Ice Cream with a Cop and Shop with a Cop.

Mini Golf Tournament at C.B. Smith Park Raises Money for Local Children BY DEBBY TEICH

O

n November 9, from 7pm to 9:30pm, the Davie-Cooper City Rotary club will once again host a Mini Golf Tournament at All Golf, which is located at the entrance of C.B. Smith Park (Johnson St. at Flamingo Rd.) in Pembroke Pines. It is an opportunity to have fun playing mini golf and help children at the same time. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit two of the club’s largest local endeavors - the Wild Horse Tales Children’s Literacy Event and the At-Risk Children’s Holiday Party. “Everyone can play mini golf and the entry fee is very reasonable,” said Darrell Stuehrenberg, past president of the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club.. “Bring your children or grandchildren for a fun night out. Everyone will have a great time and the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club’s local children’s outreach efforts will receive all of the profits.” There will be two 18-hole, mini golf courses set up. One is a Club Challenge for foursomes from civic clubs and businesses. The cost is $60 for a foursome. The other is a Family and Friends Challenge for foursomes made up of family members and friends. The cost is $50 for a foursome and $15 for individual golfers. Last year the club raised approximately $2,500 and it is hoping to raise even more this year. One of the beneficiaries, the Children’s Holiday Party, is held in December. The club invites approximately 120 disadvantaged children and school staff members from 12 local schools to the Signature Grand for an event complete with Santa, Disney characters, lunch, music and dancing. Each child receives an age appropriate gift. The other beneficiary, the Wild Horse Tales Children’s Literacy Event, is held

in February. Prior to the event, 350 first graders from three local elementary schools receive a hard cover book from the Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club. The students learn to read the book in their first-grade classrooms. During the event at the Bergeron Rodeo Arena in Davie, the children learn all about horses and horse care. Each child also has an opportunity to read to a horse. In addition to the literacy event and holiday party, Rotary members participate in a variety of other community service activities, including Davie’s Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo, and Cooper City’s Founder’s Day Festival. Rotary, which has 1.2 million members worldwide, is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Davie-Cooper City Rotary Club was established in 1971. It currently has 27 members, many of whom have been in the club for over 20 years. They live in Davie, Cooper City and the surrounding areas. The club meets on Wednesdays, at 12:15pm, at the Blue Moon Diner in Cooper City, and welcomes visitors. Most of the meetings include a guest speaker from a community business or charitable organization. Outside of the meetings, members have an opportunity to attend social events with their own members, as well as those in other Rotary clubs in the area. For information on the tournament, call 954-707-0288. For information on the Davie-Cooper City Rotary, visit www.daviecoopercity.rotary-clubs.org.

3rd Annual U.S. Military Veterans Employment Expo Is A Success BY DEBBY TEICH

U

nited States Military Veterans have experience working as part of a team to accomplish difficult tasks in a stressful environment, so they should have no problem finding jobs. Unfortunately, that is not often the case. Over 200 military veterans recently attended the 3rd Annual City of Pembroke Pines United States Military Veterans Employment Expo at The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus. The four-hour job fair was an opportunity to connect Veterans and potential employers. “Potential employers appreciate the life experience, training, loyalty, and discipline members of our United States Military bring to a job,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing. Carl Shechter, WWII Veteran and recently retired Pembroke Pines Commissioner and Vice Mayor, welcomed the Veterans, along with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and City Commissioners Ismael Monroig, Jr. Jay Schwartz and Iris Siple. After, military men and women, both retired and enlisted, met with representatives from 50 employer groups.

The City of Pembroke Pines is well known for its support of United States Veterans and their families. In 1972, following the death of Pembroke Pines resident Donnith H. Fletcher in Vietnam, city officials named a park in his honor. The City established and refurbished the R & R (Re-Energize and Re-Connect) Village, which provides temporary affordable housing to help Veterans reestablish themselves as they reenter the workforce and get back on their feet. Some other efforts include a street renaming, hosting recreational activities at the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home, supporting the Honor Flight Program, and many more. The Center’s volunteer program welcomes people who are interested in volunteering for its Veterans programs. During the weekday and evening, The Center offers classes, workshops, activities and events for members 18 years and older and membership is free. Many events at The Center are free and some require a reservation/fee. On weekends, The Center hosts events for the community including Flea Markets, Arts and Crafts, Antique and Collectible Shows, and much more. The Carl Shechter SWFP Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines. PPCS - Academic Village Campus Collects Donations for Hurricane Victims in the Caribbean SCHOOL NEWS

BY DEBBY TEICH

A

t City of Pembroke Pines Charter School – Academic Village, students are learning the importance of giving back at an early age. While most of them were spared the most catastrophic effects of Hurricane Irma, some Caribbean residents were not as lucky. The students participated in a drive to collect some of the items they needed most. It all started when Assistant Principal Jennifer Canals-Diaz’s mother received an email from co-workers in St. Maarten and St. Thomas stating they were in dire need of hurricane relief items. They were trying to take care of their own residents, as well as those who sought shelter there from the neighboring island of Barbuda. Canals-Diaz immediately knew she wanted to help. Since school was still closed, she started collecting items through social media. Once school re-opened, she encouraged her students and parents to participate. “I have always enjoyed helping others in need,” said Canals-Diaz. “I also felt it was important to have our students join, as we are consistently educating our students about the importance of helping those less fortunate.” The effort spanned across both the middle and high school. The middle school students collected and donated the items needed. The high school Spanish Honor Society assisted with the collection and stayed after school to organize the clothes. The school sent a total of 18 pallets that included clothes, n on-perishables, diapers, formula, mosquito repellent, blankets, pillows, water, soap, hygienic products, shampoo and more. Dade Paper Company offered to coordi-

nate shipment of the pallets. This is just one example of the many ways students give back throughout the year. Each year, students raise money for #WePledge100, which helps support a student community in Ti, Limbe Haiti. They have collected hundreds of items for animals to benefit the Broward

Humane Society. And much more. “Our students are consistently involved in a multitude of collection drives,” said CanalsDiaz. “Our school system’s purpose is to ‘Empower Students for the Possibilities of Tomorrow.’ It is our school’s priority to make them aware of national and global issues, while showing them how to empower themselves and others that need an extra hand.”

Seven Pembroke Pines Public Schools Students Named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program SECTION NEWS SCHOOL HEAD

BY DEBBY TEICH

A

total of 53 Broward County Public Schools students are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. This includes seven students from Pembroke Pines. These academically talented high school seniors will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million offered next spring. The 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists, who attend public school in Pembroke Pines, are: Flanagan, Charles W. High School ▸▸ • Jeremy M. Gilick West Broward High School ▸▸ • Alyssa F. Cavazos ▸▸ • Fabiana A. Corsi ▸▸ • Robert Cuba ▸▸ • Nina E. Fernandez ▸▸ • Tyler Metzger ▸▸ • Joshua R. Vogel National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) was established in 1955 - a time in which there was concern that the United States was lagging behind in the cold war scientific race, but the public was indifferent to rewarding intellectual accomplishment. In response, the National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to

develop their abilities to the fullest. The competition is very rigorous. Scholarship winners are chosen based on their abilities, skills, extracurricular accomplishments, and potential for success in college and beyond. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT) - which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year - and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring students in each state. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. In February, the seven students from Pembroke Pines will learn if they advance to Finalist standing. Approximately 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

There are a variety of Merit Scholarship awards, including some that are corporate-sponsored, college-sponsored and special scholarships. Every Finalist competes for the National Merit Scholarships, which are $2,500 single payment scholarships that are awarded on a state-representational basis. Winners are selected without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans.

PPCHS Students Attend 2nd Annual “Raise Your Game” Journalism Summit BY DEBBY TEICH

T

here are many issues facing teen journalism students in school and sports. Nearly 100 students from the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School Yearbook, Newspaper, Digital Publishing and Journalism classes recently had an opportunity to discuss some of them (l to r): Panelists with a panel of sports journalists at Juan Arango, Bruce the 2nd Annual “Raise Your Game” Silverman, Chris Whittyngham, Journalism Summit hosted by the and Josh Appel school. After the journalists shared how they have learned from career challenges and experiences and told a few funny stories, they answered questions from the students. “The goal of our Journalism Summits is to help students realize that whatever age you are or profession you are in, there will always be unpredictable days - some exciting and some not,” said Faran Fagen, Newspaper/Yearbook adviser, Department Chair Electives PPCHS. “A journalist working in the field has to meet his/her obligations, including meeting deadlines in a 24-hour news cycle regardless of the unexpected, including power outages.” The four guest panelists included: ▸▸ Juan Arango, color analyst for Miami FC soccer, who has covered/announced two World Cups and is a correspondent for TALK Sport and Sportsmax. ▸▸ Bruce Silverman, a play-by-play announcer for Miami FC soccer, host of Silverman on Sports radio show, and Herff-Jones Yearbook Representative for PPCHS ▸▸ Chris Wittyngham, a PPCHS graduate and former Sports Editor Host of Miami Dolphins pregame shows

▸▸ Josh Appel, football play-by-play voice for Sports USA media and play-by-play broadcaster for Philadelphia Phillies Clearwater Threshers The panelists gave the students advice on how to evolve from a self-conscious teen to a confident professional. They reinforced the importance of working hard and going beyond to produce a solid story, as well as treating people with respect and honesty to help build “go to” relationships in the sports world. They pointed out that learning never stops and they must continually hone their journalistic skills to separate themselves from their peers, as well as the importance of being spontaneous, flexible, meeting deadlines, and staying on top of issues and technology. They discussed the value of a journalist who does his/ her homework, properly researching, fact checking and reporting in an unbiased manner. The overriding advice from the four panelists, however, was to use every experience and opportunity they have in high school, from a teacher profile to an investigative piece, as a learning experience. After the panelists spoke, the students had an opportunity to ask questions. They wanted to know about technology in the media, interviewing, techniques for covering the news in today’s world, and more. “Students were interested in stories as they related to teens in sports, such as the one relayed by Bruce Silverman, who used his experiences as a broadcaster to tell the students to find their voice and never give up,” said Fagen.

Not a smoker? You Could Still Be at Risk for Lung Cancer There is a common misconception that if someone has never smoked that they aren’t at risk for lung cancer. While tobacco smoking is the number one cause, Bruno Bastos, MD Oncologist there are other Cleveland Clinic Florida factors that can result in the development of lung cancer. Lung Cancer Stigma Some in our society believe that diagnosis of lung cancer is the result of a personal choice to smoke only. As a result, lung cancer patients are not always viewed in the same light as patients with other types of cancer. “There’s a huge stigma associated with lung cancer because the majority of people who die from it are either smokers or former smokers,” says Cleveland Clinic Florida oncologist Bruno Bastos, MD. “But, tobacco is one of the most addictive substances known to man. Addiction is a disease, and nobody deserves to get lung cancer.”

Although smoking is certainly a contributing factor, the reality is that anyone can be exposed to second-hand smoke or other toxins, as well as have a family history of lung cancer, which can also trigger the disease. “You do not have to be a smoker in order to develop lung cancer, and it should be a major concern for everyone,” Dr. Bastos said.

therapies that target specific types of lung cancer cells.”

The stigma associated with lung cancer has also had a negative effect on research. Although statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show that more people in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, researchers have had a difficult time obtaining funding to find a cure.

There have been some other innovations over the past few years as well. Development of screening tools such as CT scans aid in early detection of lung cancer, which Dr. Bastos said “could save tens of thousands of lives.”

“Other types of cancers also have a lot more survivors who can advocate for funding,” said Dr. Bastos. “There are not enough lung cancer survivors to demand change, and those who do survive often blame themselves, and many are not willing to share their stories.” Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Despite the lack of funding for research, there has still been great progress made in lung cancer diagnosis and treatments over the last several years. “There are many different types of lung cancer,” according to Dr. Bastos, “and genetic testing has helped researchers develop

Additionally, therapies already approved to treat skin cancer, are being considered for lung cancer as well. “Immune-based therapies, in which the immune system is primed to attack tumors, are also showing potential for treating lung cancer,” said Dr. Bastos.

Decrease Your Risk Even though you can develop the disease without having ever been a smoker, if you are someone who smokes, the sooner you quit, the better. Although smokers who have quit are still at an increased risk for lung cancer, the good news is that their risk decreases as the number of years they have been smokefree increases. The best advice is not to start smoking to begin with. For more information or to schedule a consultation, visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/lungcancer or call 800.639.DOCTOR today.

Pembroke Pines Update ASK THE MAYOR

BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS

W

e have a lot to be thankful for this month. We are seeing the end of a devastating hurricane season, we honor our veterans for all they’ve done for us, and have the opportunity to take a moment to realize all that we are grateful for this Thanksgiving season. Hurricane Irma challenged not only our city, but the entire state once it hit our shores. It is a lesson learned to always be prepared each hurricane season. I was witness to many people in our community stepping up to help in so many different ways, both during and after the storm. We should all be truly proud of our residents and city staff for their tireless efforts to ensure everyone was safe and needs were met. I also encourage everyone to sign up for the city’s CodeRed program. It is used to communicate emergency notifications to registered subscribers. There is no charge to register for or to use CodeRED, and personal information is kept confidential. Registering is quick and easy and can be done in or of two ways -- either sign up online at https://public.coderedweb.com/cne/ en-US/C44FCAD73941 or utilize the CodeRed Mobile Alert app, a free public safety app for both Android and iPhone users. The CodeRed app delivers community and emergency alerts to individuals targeted with the impacted area, and allows you to receive timely notifications when you’re on the road and/or away from home. CodeRed delivers notifications by phone, email and/or text; and is compatible with TDD/TTY devices for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. More information can be found on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. This year’s Veterans Day Observance will take place in a new location at the Memorial Park, located at 601 City Center Way by the Charles F. Dodge City Center. It will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 from noon to 2pm. This is such a special day of observance. Each year more than 300 people attend the ceremony, where guest speakers from multiple U.S. Services, the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Color Guard, scouts and the Pembroke Pines Charter School Band will be in attendance.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Talking About Death BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE

S

ooner or later we all die. It will happen to me. As upsetting as it may be to think about, it will happen to you, too. It’s simply a fact. And while we don’t know when or how death will occur, we hope the end comes peacefully when we are very old, surrounded by those we love, having lived a long and good life. No one lives forever. Death is a part of life, yet most people find the topic very difficult to think about and especially hard to discuss with others. Talking about what will happen to your family when you pass away can be a very emotional subject. And, as with all emotionally-charged subjects, it is often easier to ignore or think about later. Is estate planning on your “to do” list? Perhaps you are superstitious. Can just talking about something make it more likely to happen?

It is common for me to learn that new clients have taken months, often years, from the time they first started thinking about estate planning to when they called our office to schedule a consultation. For many, life provides a burst of motivation encouraging you to take care of matters sooner rather than later. Perhaps a health scare or a vacation overseas? It may also be seeing the aftermath of a tragedy or the death of a friend or family member. Without proper planning, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind after the death of a loved one, during a very emotional time. Is that the last “gift” you want to leave to those you love? So how do you prepare to face what may happen to your family after you are gone? Is it necessary to have a will, a durable power of attorney, or other estate planning documents? The best place to start is by educating yourself as to what estate planning is. There are many websites devoted to wills, trusts, and other documents that you can explore. Look at our website and blog at www.idenlaw.com. By learning about the subject, it may be easier to discuss your needs. It won’t make you an expert, but when you consult an attorney you will be better prepared to formulate questions, which leads to the next step. Consider contacting an estate planning attorney to arrange a consultation. Many estate planning attorneys do not charge for this initial meeting. Keep in mind that you need to feel comfortable and at ease with the attorney and office staff you select. Chemistry is important, as are qualifications. Find someone you trust. Remember not all attorneys specialize in estate planning; some just dabble. Ask questions. Do your research. Look for competence and shared values. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

REAL ESTATE

BY PATRICK SIMM

U

nbeknownst to many, the Real Estate Market shifted within the past year. The notion of putting your home up for sale and listing it at a higher price to “test the market” to see if you can get what you really desire tempts even the best of us. I recommend that you think twice prior to making this irrational decision. Research indicates that overpricing your home, while having to decrease the price one or more times while it languishes on the market frequently, leads to selling it at a much lower price than you would have if you had priced it correctly in the first place. The longer a home sits on the market, the more appeal it loses to potential buyers. Many homeowners have the tendency to follow their emotions rather than logic when setting the initial list price for the property. Their initial pricing decision is typically based on what they paid for their home, the current mortgage balance, the cost to upgrade or beautify the home, or the profit they need to net to buy or move to another home.

954.792.3993

6127 Stirling Road Davie Just East of the old Ark Restaurant www.FlooringStoreDavie.com dccarpetinc@bellsouth.net

The truth of the matter is that your home is worth only what the market will bear at the time of selling. Pricing your home too high will deter a number of potential buyers from wanting to view it, while others will simply just walk away without making an offer. Simply, if your home is for sale and you have numerous potential buyers viewing it with no offers over a short period of time, it is either overpriced or in sub-par condition. The truth is that 80% of those buyers went on and chose to buy another property that is listed. In order to get to the correct pricing, a potential seller should involve the services of a Realtor - yes, a Professional Real Estate sales person! Potential “For Sale by Owners” may tend to disagree with the reasoning that we live in the age of information technology and anything and everything can be “Googled.” Realtors have access to additional and the most current information that simply cannot be “Googled.” They are the professionals! In choosing a Realtor to sell your home, one might be tempted to select the one who suggests the highest asking price for the property. Resist the temptation of selecting a Realtor based on pricing and the one who tells you only what you want to hear. The selection should be based on the Realtor who provides critical information which should include a current Comparative Market Analysis with a rational explanation of how your home should be priced in order to sell quickly and for the highest price possible. With the Real Estate Market currently feeling the effect of the most recent shift, it is highly recommended that sellers partner with a Realtor and listen to their advice. This should get your home sold for the highest price that the market will bear in the least amount of time possible, while saving you hassles and making the transaction a smooth one from the beginning. Buttock Enhancement (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) ASK THE EXPERT

BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, MD, FACS

J

ennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian started a craze for an enhanced buttock. Flat or less protruding rear ends everywhere are being surgically enhanced into more shapely curves and feminine fullness. More women everywhere are considering, or getting buttock enhancements – lifted, sculpted, or augmented. Tighter fitting clothing, such as low-cut sweats, workout pants and leotards are seen in public more often, and a more shapely feminine figure has become aesthetically more desirable. The popularity of the butt lift is not just a U.S. fashion fad. Many women desire to enhance their buttock and thigh region to create a beautiful buttock shape and the very attractive sweep of the lower back, hips and waist. The buttock augmentation (a.k.a. Brazilian Butt Lift) is enjoying a surge in popularity, because women are unhappy with their buttocks - viewing them as too flat, too wide, or sagging. They were either born like this, or lost the form and shape of their buttocks after losing or gaining weight. Pregnancy, or just aging alone, can also affect the size, projection, and profile of the buttocks. Inability to achieve perky buttocks and sexy curves through exercise and muscle toning has frustrated healthconscious women. There are a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures available for those who desire youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks, with a more sensual body profile. These techniques vary depending on what is actually missing and what is the overall body frame and form. For example, there are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed “fat and wide” buttocks. Liposculpture can shape their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure. On the other hand, there are those who have “flat and wide” buttocks. In addition to utilizing liposculpture to shape their waist, hips and buttocks, fat injection or grafting is used to augment the buttocks and to provide fullness and projection. Because it also helps to lift loose buttock tissue, this procedure is also referred to as a Brazilian Buttock Lift. Contrary to the above, there are some with sagging buttocks who are not a candidate for Brazilian Buttock Augmentation. These are people whose buttocks sag as a result of massive weight loss, such as after a gastric bypass surgery. These individuals would benefit from a body lift procedure which removes excess skin and helps to lift their thighs and buttocks. During your consultation, Dr. Messa will review your treatment options for buttock contouring, augmentation and enlargement. He will discuss if you are a good candidate, surgical options and techniques, potential risks and complications of surgery, pre- and post-operative instructions, as well as what to expect after surgery. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. LEGALLY SPEAKING

Should We Mediate? BY EVAN BARON

M

any couples are choosing to attend mediation rather than seek the representation of an attorney when considering a divorce. So rather than speaking to an attorney to learn about the law, they decide to attend a mediation session without representation, hoping to settle their case quickly and painlessly. In some cases this could be a good idea, since it probably would be less costly. Sometimes, however, it is “penny wise and pound foolish.” You may be successful in saving costs and attorney’s fees, but you may in turn be giving up more than you should. A signed mediation settlement agreement is a binding contract between the parties. If in fact you change your mind about the distribution of property after the agreement is signed, you will generally be “stuck” with your decision. “I didn’t have an attorney” will not be a defense. In addition, the mediator, although usually an attorney, is not playing the role of an attorney and therefore cannot give either party legal advice. Basically, you will be on your own.

NOVEMBER 2017 | OUR CITY PEMBROKE PINES

I am not suggesting that mediation is always the wrong decision. In fact, parties who cannot reach a settlement on their own, even when represented by attorneys, must attend mediation prior to a final hearing being set. So, mediation can be a very successful tool, provided you know the law. If you are aware of what you are either entitled to or what you must give up, then a fair and equitable settlement can be reached. If you enter mediation without any idea of how the law is structured, you run the risk of reaching an unfair agreement. Perhaps the most important consideration is choosing the correct mediator. Mediators are trained and licensed. I find it very important when hiring a mediator to make sure his/her personality will be favorable for my client. Each mediator has a different style in the way they approach a case. Mediators generally charge from $150 to $350 an hour for their time. Most mediations last at least four to five hours, although some can last a full day. Anything discussed in mediation is confidential and therefore cannot be discussed after the mediation concludes. This is to promote the exchange of settlement offers without the fear that these offers will be used against you, should the mediation not be successful. A successful Mediator will settle a very high percentage of their mediations. Those are obviously very good odds for success. My best advice is to go see an attorney to learn about you rights before going blindly into a mediation. Remember, the agreement you sign can change your life forever! The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. Flat Feet in Children and Adults ASK THE EXPERT

BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

T

he arch of a person’s foot is the main supporting structure of the body. It is composed of bones that are connected by ligaments. If the ligaments are strong, the integrity of the arch remains intact. Ligaments that are loose or weak allow the arch to flatten. When this occurs, muscles try ineffectively to hold up the arch. Pain in the foot, legs, ankle and back often develops.

CAUSES: Flatfeet include loose ligaments in the arch. Trauma to tendons or bone abnormalities can cause the foot to flatten. Tight calf muscles can severely aggravate the condition. Arthritis in the foot or ankle (rheumatoid, psoriatic) can be a predisposing factor in flatfeet. SYMPTOMS: Pain, usually in the arch, ankles and legs aggravated by standing and walking, is most common. Premature fatigue during any type of activity frequently occurs. Cramping in the legs, especially at night is common. In children, a general lack of interest in participating in sports may be seen. SIGNS: A flat arch when standing or the foot excessively points to the outside especially during gait. Bulging of the bones on the inside of the ankle and foot are usually seen. Flat feet are usually associated with knock-knees and abnormal shoe wear.

RELATED PROBLEMS: Back and knee problems are seen, especially in children and men. Hammertoes, heel spurs and bunions are often associated with flatfeet as a person ages. Arthritis in the foot, ankle, knees, hips and back is also common with aging. Inactivity, which can cause weight gain and poor cardiovascular fitness, may occur. TREATMENT: Identifying the area of pain and underlying cause as early as possible is important. Treatment may include proper shoe gear and custom molded orthotics to support the foot and the entire extremity. Physical therapy to improve flexibility, strength, balance and coordination may be prescribed. Other treatments include stretching of the calf muscles in a cast to diminish excessive strain on the arch and improve flexibility. Surgery to correct the deformity and return the child or adult to full function. Carlo A. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults.
