ORU takes Southland Conference lead with season sweep of Islanders

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University was in top form Thursday night, pounding Southland Conference leader Sam Houston State, 90-40, at the Mabee Center.

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University moved into the Southland Conference lead for the first time in four weeks as they topped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 81-59, at the Mabee Center. Senior Kevi Luper scored 26 points in the win.

ORU held the Bearkats to a 19.6% field goal percentage, a new program record for lowest shooting percentage allowed in a game. ORU’s previous record came on November 29, 2003, when Bacone shot just 20.4% in a 119-29 Golden Eagle win.

ORU (13-11, 10-4 SLC) took advantage of earlier losses by Sam Houston State and Lamar to vault past both teams and into the SLC lead. Both the Bearkats and Cardinals are now 9-4 in league play, a half-game behind the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles used a balanced scoring attack to rout Sam Houston. Jaci Bigham led the way with 17 points, while Taylor Cooper added 16, Christian Key had 15, Kevi Luper chipped in 13 and Savanna Buck scored 11 on the night. ORU put five players in double-figures for the second time this season.

Luper drained four three-pointers and was one of four ORU players in double-figures. Sarah Shelton added 16 points, while Jaci Bigham scored 12 points and dished nine assists.

Sarah Shelton led ORU with 10 rebounds. Buck added eight boards, while Bigham tallied a team-high five assists. Five Golden Eagles scored in double-figures in a 50-point victory over Sam Houston State, including Savanna Buck with 11 points

ORU closed the half on a 9-0 rally to take a comfortable lead into the locker room. Cooper scored the last five points of the period, giving the home team a 36-19 lead.

The Golden Eagles started the second half with a 7-0 run, blitzing the Bearkats and building a 24-point lead. Two free throws from Bigham at the 18:02 mark gave ORU a massive 43-19 edge. Bigham set a personal milestone at the 14:29 mark of the second half. The senior’s three-pointer gave her 1,414 points for her career, placing her 10th on ORU’s career scoring chart. ORU used a 14-0 run midway through the half to put the game out of reach. Bigham and Luper each hit a pair of three-pointers during the run, which gave the home team a 63-27 lead with 11:45 left. ORU’s largest lead came with :25 left, when a Bernadett Balla free throw gave ORU a 90-39 edge. The Islanders played ORU very tight in the second half, whittling the lead down to 13 points, at 61-48, on two Ashley Darley free throws with 8:37 left. But the Golden Eagles clamped down, and the Islanders would get no closer. ORU restored their 20-point lead on a Bigham basket to make the score 75-55 with 2:17 on the clock, and they went on to win by 22 points.
