Despite forcing 40 turnovers, Golden Eagles can’t hold on to 14-point lead

Kansas improves to 11-0 all-time against ORU after scoring 52 points in the paint

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University led by as many as 14 points on Thursday night, but the Golden Eagles could not hold on and fell to Grambling State University, 89-80, in overtime. The Lady Tigers closed the game on a 36-16 run.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Kansas shot 51.6% from the floor and scored 52 points in the paint in an 85-68 victory over Oral Roberts University Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 7-5 on the season.

Oral Roberts (7-4, 1-0 Summit League) led 64-53 with 10:27 left to play but hit just three field goals in the game’s final 15:27. Jordan Pyle led the Golden Eagles with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Kevi Luper added 18 points.

Kevi Luper led the Golden Eagles with 20 points, and Jordan Pyle added 13 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds. ORU shot 41.4% as a team.

Markisha Patterson led Grambling (4-3) with 19 points, and Tulsa native Savannah Carter scored 16. In the post, Wymeka Randle paced the Lady Tigers with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Grambling won despite turning the ball over 40 times. ORU struggled from three point range, going 7-for-37 (18.9%). The home side also lost the battle of the boards, 57-39. Grambling State committed 25 first half turnovers and the Golden Eagles took a 44-32 halftime lead. The Tigers fought back and cut the ORU lead to 65-63 at the 7:00 mark. A three-pointer by Carter gave the Tigers their first lead of the second half, 74-73, with a 3:11 on the clock. Luper tied the game at 78 with a huge three-pointer with just 57 seconds left, and Jaci Bigham ripped the ball away from Patterson with just 32 seconds remaining to give the Golden Eagles a chance to win the game in regulation. ORU staged an 11-0 run, capped by two straight Luper field goals that gave the road team a 17-15 edge at the 9:56 mark. Next it was KU’s turn for a rally. The Jayhawks took off on a 12-0 run late in the half, with Monica Engelman providing the final basket, to take a 31-21 lead with 4:28 on the clock. Kansas slowly wore the Golden Eagles down in the second half. Another basket by Harper pushed the lead over the 15-point line, at 54-38, with 15:52 on the clock. Natalie Knight scored the bucket that gave KU their first 20-point lead, a pull-up jumper with 9:50 left to make the score 63-43. Despite the loss, there were plenty of bright spots for the Golden Eagles. ORU outrebounded Kansas, 39-37, becoming just the second team this season to beat KU on the glass. Luper went over the 20-point mark for the ninth time this season. No other Summit Legue player has scored 20 points more than four times this season.
