TULSA, Okla.-Two free throws with less than 5 seconds to go made it a five-point game and gave junior Warren Niles 1,000 points for his career, helping ORU hold on for a 68-63 victory over Missouri State. Late threes by the Bears (41) got them to within three but ORU (5-2) never trailed in the game and won its fifth-straight contest. Niles ended up with a team-high 19 points, including an 8-for-8 mark from the free throw line. Dominique Morrison added 13, while Roderick Pearson had his second double-figure mark of the season with 11. Michael Craion chipped in 10 points, while Steven Roundtree had a gamehigh 12 rebounds to go with his eight points. The Golden Eagles shot 41 percent (22-53) in the game despite shooting just 32 percent (8-25) in the second half. ORU also had a 39-31 advantage on the glass. “Obviously this is a really good win for this club,” said Coach Scott Sutton. “I was proud of how this team competed and the intensity level that we played with. We told them, Missouri State is a tough, physical team and would play with a high intensity level and we would have to match that. I thought our guys really did that tonight, especially in the first half.” Kyle Weems led the Bears with 22 points, 16 of which came in the second half as he tried to carry his team back scoring eight of the team’s last 13 points. Caleb Patterson added 14 points for MSU, who improved from a 36 percent shooting effort in the first half to shoot 48 percent in the second, closing the 14-point halftime margin. ORU shot 50 percent in the first half, and used a 13-0 run in the middle of the period to open up an 11-point lead midway through the half. The lead would get out to as many as 14 in the first half at 36-22, which is where the first half ended. Niles 17th and 18th points effectively put the game out of reach as he reached the career milestone in the process. “He hit some big shots again,” said Sutton.“Warren has been in a little bit of a slump and probably lost a little of his confidence along the way. It was great to see him play well tonight because he’s a great shooter. This is a guy who scored 39 points on the road as a freshman ... he is the last guy that needs to have confidence shooting the basketball and I thought he played well tonight.”

TULSA, Okla.-Trailing for most of the second half, the Oral Roberts (6-2, 1-0) defense stiffened and held Southern Utah (4-4, 0-1) without a field goal in the final 4:28 of the game, outscoring the Thunderbirds 16-2 over that stretch, taking a 61-55 victory Saturday night in the Summit League opener for both teams. Michael Craion had a team-high 15 points, the final two of which might have been the most important as he picked Jackson Stevenett’s pocket and converted a pair of free throws on the other end to move it from a two to a four point game with 12 seconds to go in the contest. Damen Bell-Holter scored the first points of his season in his second game back, finishing with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Roderick Pearson also scored in double figures for the third time this year and the second consecutive game. For Southern Utah, Stevenett had 20 points, including a 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line. Wade Collie and Matt Massey chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Golden Eagles converted late buckets and ended the game shooting 52 percent in the second half, and out-rebounded SUU 33-25 including 16 offensive rebounds, which they converted into 20 second chance points. The road team tried to take control early, running out to a 5-0 lead, but ORU climbed back into the game, and four-straight points by Mikey Manghum tied the game at 8-8. The Golden Eagles finally took their first lead of the game at 14-12with 10:57 to go in the first half. After a Stevenett layup tied the game at 14-14, ORU went on an 11-3 spurt to take an eight point lead, 25-17 with just over five minutes to go in the first half. SUU would not go away either, pulling to within three at 28-25, but a Jake Lliteras three with 1:06 to go in the half pushed it right back out to a six point advantage for ORU. Despite shooting just 36 percent to SUU’s 52 percent, ORU still found themselves on top 31-25 at the break.

NORMAN, Okla.-Oral Roberts shot just 36 percent from the floor, including a 1-15 mark from the three-point line in a 73-59 loss to Oklahoma (6-1), Thursday night inside the Lloyd Noble Center. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for ORU (6-3), who hit the road for a true road game for the first time since the season opener at West Virginia. “That was a game of missed opportunities for us,” said Head Coach Scott Sutton. “Give OU credit, they obviously had a lot to do with it but you can’t go 1-15 from three. We had good looks all night and shooters have to step up and make shots. We had 10 shots, I’ll call them layups, that you have to convert if you are going to win a tough game on the road.” Dominique Morrison led ORU with 20 points and was tied with Steven Roundtree with a team-high six rebounds. Damen Bell-Holter was the only other Golden Eagle to reach double figures with 16 points, his highest total of the season. Steven Pledger had 17 points to lead the Sooner, who had three players (Pledger, Andrew Fitzgerald and Cameron Clark) score at least 16 points. OU finished the game shooting an even 50 percent (27-54) and out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 38-31. After struggling to get production from the bench early in the season, ORU got 22 points from the non-starters, and held a 22-12 advantage in that category despite the Sooners playing a total of 12 players in the game. ORU shot just 39 percent (11-28) for the half, while OU converted 52 percent (14-27) of their shots and held a 19-12 advantage on the boards over the Golden Eagles. Down by 12 in the second half, ORU cut it to six but missed layups plagued the Golden Eagles and conversions on the other end extended it out to a 15-point lead (55-39) for the Sooners. After a couple of free throws and a fast-break dunk by Roundtree, a nice move in the paint by Bell-Holter made it six-straight for ORU and got them back to within striking distance (55-45) with 5:47 to go in the game. Free throws down the stretch helped OU hold onto their lead and the Sooners won their 31st consecutive nonconference game inside the Lloyd Noble Center with a 73-59 victory.
