April is National Financial Literacy Month A

pril 1st is the official start of National Financial Literacy Month. Many consumers, some for the first time, are living in a down economy. The monthlong initiative offers an opportunity for individuals to learn about finances and effective strategy to better their overall financial situation. The effort started in 2003 when the United States Senate declared the month of April National Financial Literacy Month. Financial Literacy Month is the perfect opportunity for individuals and families to change their financial situation by learning about important financial matters like creating and managing a budget, paying down debt while saving for emergencies and creating achievable financial goals. Parents have an opportunity to set good examples for their children and begin teaching them smart money habits early. Over 58 percent of students surveyed said they learned about personal finance and money management from their parents. Here at ORNL Federal Credit Union, we care about your financial future. We are committed to bringing you the financial education you need to reach your financial goals and helping you develop a healthier relationship with your money. Visit ornlfcu.com for more information and resources available to help you make the most of your money whether you’re a student, young adult, parent, senior citizen, or military service member.

T

o all ORNL FCU members who have Vacation Savings on their Credit Union accounts: Any balance, including interest, from your Vacation Savings will be transferred to the share you designated on April 30, 2014 . Simply contact the toll-free number provided on the label, provide identifying information and create the PIN at your convenience. This feature will also be available to card holders who desire to change an existing PIN. To change an existing PIN, dial 866.985.2273 to be guided through the process. How to Keep Your Debit and Credit Cards Safe and Secure

W

ith the recent debit and credit card compromises at large, national retailers, it is important for all members to be aware of what to do in the event of a card compromise. First and foremost, member accounts at ORNL Federal Credit Union are monitored 24/7 by an experienced team of security professionals for any suspicious or potentially fraudulent activity. We employ the most advanced fraud detection and prevention technology to guard members’ credit and debit accounts against unauthorized access and use. Often in a breach, personal information may be stolen such as names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. While this does not directly impact debit or credit cards, it is important to understand that this type of information is often used in telephone, email, mail and online scams. It is important to safeguard personal information and NEVER provide it at the request of a call, letter, email link or screen alert. ORNL FCU will NEVER contact you and request your personal information, including account information.

NEVER respond to a text request for personal information. We will not send text messages requesting personal or account information.

NEVER use phone numbers, email addresses, or open Web links or attachments within an email that you are not expecting from the Credit Union. Email communications may appear official, but often they are not. When in doubt, contact our Call Center at 800.676.5328 to confirm that we originated the communication. Do not reply or click links until the communication is validated.

ALWAYS validate and confirm numbers through a source other than those provided by a caller, email or letter. Letters may be generated that appear to be from ORNL Federal Credit Union. Be especially mindful of communications that request personal information or make offers via links that are not legitimate. Remember, we never request your personal information. If you receive a letter requesting a reply or information update that you are not expecting, do not respond without contacting ORNL FCU.

Report any suspicious requests via email, text or Web site content asking for this information. Immediately contact ORNL Federal Credit Union and report the incident by calling 865.688.9555, tollfree 800.676.5328, or by emailing us at abuse@ornlfcu.com.

Tips for safeguarding your information:

NEVER use a number provided by a caller. Scam artists are convincing and use pieces of information to convince consumers that they are calling for legitimate purposes. If you receive a call requesting personal information, hang up. You can initiate a call back to the Credit Union. Always use a number that you obtain from a business directory or online at ornlfcu.com.

We always recommend that you take proactive measures to protect your account(s) including: • Review your account(s) on a regular basis to confirm that all transactions are legitimate and were authorized by you or another account owner. You can monitor your accounts and transactions easily through online, mobile or telephone banking. Transactions through these selfservice channels are available 24/7 and provide up-to-date balance and transaction information. In addition, signing up for eStatements provides access to statement information faster and more securely than paper statements. • Report any suspicious transactions immediately by contacting the number on the back of your card to report any fraudulent transactions. • Ensure that ORNL Federal Credit Union has your current contact information including mailing address, email address and telephone numbers. We make every effort to contact members that may need direct assistance and often email and telephone are the quickest and most effective channels to contact members. To update your information sign in to online or mobile banking or call 865.688.9555. We remain committed to you and the security of your accounts and private information. Please contact us directly if we may assist you further at 800.676.5328.
