Pam Korza, Caren Oberg, Glenn Robertson, Ellen Rosenthal, Roy Rosenzweig, David Scobey, and Dan Spock. We received significant and irreplaceable assistance from researchers Bill Allen, Laura Miller, and Katy Vance, who helped us comb reports, gather data, and create the tables you see here. Two groups of students—Anne Whisnant’s fall 2008 Introduction to Public History class at UNC-Chapel Hill and Kathy Franz’s public history students in David Thelen’s 2010 American University class on “Interpretation, Visitor Studies, and Civic Engagement in the National Park Service”—engaged with the project as part of their coursework and provided useful insights and information. David Whisnant offered significant editorial assistance at several key points. At the OAH, our work was expertly shepherded by the incomparable Sue Ferentinos, longtime manager of the OAH public history program, and her capable successor, Aidan Smith, who patiently guided the project in its final months. Heather Miller’s careful copyediting smoothed the rough edges of a report created by four sets of hands. Much of this report was drafted in the comfortable quarters of Panther Orchard Farm, a writer’s retreat in Ashaway, Rhode Island; we thank Lynne Anderson for her gracious hospitality there. Anne Whisnant also appreciates UNC-Chapel Hill Secretary of the Faculty Joseph Ferrell for the flexibility afforded by her position at the Office of Faculty Governance that has made time available for this work. By virtue of her incredible competence, Katie Turner in the Office of Faculty Governance also provided indirect assistance. Finally, we extend our deepest gratitude to others in each of our lives whose support, practical help, patience, and companionship have sustained each of us: David, Evan, and Derek Whisnant; Steve Peck; Cynthia Shelton; and Patricia Cole.
