ear friends, welcome to Opera Santa Barbara’s 23rd season! During last season, my first as OSB’s Artistic Director, I had the opportunity to observe and understand some of the things that make this company so unique: a passionate and hardworking staff that works to produce the highest quality performances possible; a curious

and enthusiastic Board that welcomes new ideas; and an audience that comes to the Granada Theatre seeking great stories, great music, great voices and always open to new experiences. Over the 400-some years since the first opera was created in Florence, the world’s greatest composers have brought to life stories reflecting the full spectrum of human experience. Their works showcase our most powerful means of expression, the human voice, and incorporate action, poetry, dance and visual arts into the most ambitious achievement of Western civilization. As Artistic Director, each year my job and joy is to go back to the treasure troves of operatic creation and design seasons that are as diverse in expression and as rich in entertainment, feeling and meaning as our amazing art form is. The wide-ranging mix of our 2016/17 mainstage season reflects our desire to reach as many people in Santa Barbara as possible and attract to the theater opera lovers from all over the Central and Southern Coast. I hope that you will find that the three works in our season present a unique, authentic and compelling artistic proposition worth experiencing in its entirety. I look forward to sharing these works with you in productions painstakingly prepared by our production staff, orchestra and chorus and featuring some of the finest young American singers working today. I look forward to you becoming a season subscriber and taking advantage of the many subscriber benefits including the best seats in the house and savings over the price of single tickets. I'm looking forward to having the opportunity of meeting you in the next season. Opera Santa Barbara is your company, and I would love to hear from you any time at kostis@operasb.org.

With best wishes,

KOSTIS PROTOPAPAS Artistic Director
