ANDREA CHÉNIER Words Thursday 14 January 7.30pm £5

‘Clay put his case vigorously... I've rarely heard a more eloquent justification for smashing stuff up’ The Guardian on Tearing Up History

Revolution! Annabel Arden, Director of Opera North’s new production of Andrea Chénier (set during the French Revolution of 1789), discusses the opera and the evolution of the forces of liberty and protest. Professor Richard Clay, presenter of the BBC’s Tearing Up History, provides insight into the iconoclasm and art of the French Revolution itself. This insightful talk is delivered by world-renowned director and co-founder of Théâtre de Complicité, Annabel Arden and art historian Professor Richard Clay who advised Tate Britain on their 2014 exhibition ‘Art under Attack’, and features live music by violinist David Le Page, including his Variations on the Marseillaise. ANDREA CHÉNIER Film Saturday 16 January 3.00pm £5

Dir. Andrzej Wajda, Poland/France 1983, 136 mins. Cert 12. In French with English subtitles. ‘Danton is a major work from this major film maker’ The New York Times

Danton Gérard Depardieu and Wojciech Pszoniak star in a powerful depiction of the ideological clash between charismatic, man-of-the-people Georges Danton and icy extremist Maximilien Robespierre, both key figures in the French Revolution. The film brilliantly illuminates one of the most fascinating periods of the Revolution, with Louis XVI executed, The Terror at its peak, and power inexorably changing hands. One of the great films about The Terror, Danton can also be read as Director Andrzej Wajda’s reflection on the Solidarity movement in his own country, the then Soviet-dominated Poland. Introduced by Dr Paul Rowe, Senior Lecturer in French at the University of Leeds. DARE International Film Series in association with the University of Leeds Book online: howardassemblyroom.co.uk

Mingus Big Band

Saturday 23 January 7.45pm £20

‘Some people describe the Mingus Big Band as the most joyous experience in jazz... Others call it the most profound. Seeing the band... was a reminder of why it’s both at once’ (The Telegraph)

Reserved seating ‘The most exhilarating night of the year’ The Times

Keeping alive the genius of the great jazz adventurer Charles Mingus, who died in 1979, the band, led by his widow Sue Mingus, has a huge repertoire. Their style mixes ferocious wildness with pin-point precision and ultimate lyricism. Making a unique northern appearance in the intimacy of the Howard Assembly Room, ahead of their legendary Ronnie Scott’s residency, this show is likely to blow the roof off!

Chassol French pianist, composer and filmmaker Christophe Chassol plays his dazzling fourth album Big Sun. Dynamic and life-enhancing, his live score interweaves with the sounds, colours and voices of his film about his parents’ homeland Martinique. Adored by BBC Radio 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson, Chassol has leapt into the greater public consciousness following performances at James Lavelle’s Meltdown and the London Jazz Festival. Often likened to Woodkid, his performance fuses visuals and rhythmic motifs into a stunning filmic/musical whole.

Gothic Voices

New Light on an Ancient World ‘A Feather on the Breath of God...’ The wonderfully evocative phrase from Abbess Hildegard of Bingen is a fine description of the sound world that the British Early Music ensemble Gothic Voices inhabits. For over thirty years, their unaccompanied close medieval harmonies have been world renowned for their excellence, refinement and spirituality. This programme New Light on an Ancient World combines music by the great medieval composer and visionary Hildegard of Bingen herself, with pieces by Machaut and Dufay.

Cheikh Lô The voice of Senegal’s Cheikh Lô is unique, cosmopolitan and graceful. One of the giants and greatest mavericks of West African music, his music fuses his unmistakeably soulful voice with funk, mbalax (a form of Senegalese dance music) and other West African styles. Starting out as a drummer 40 years ago with musicians like Papa Wemba, he later started playing the guitar and incorporating influences of reggae and funk into his own style. This rare UK performance sees Cheikh Lô perform music from his newly released album Balbalou (Chapter Two).

Save 20% ‘Sketches of Ethiopia presents Mulatu at the peak of his powers... this album serves as a reminder that the original architect of the form is still the undisputed master’ The Quietus

Mulatu Astatke The revered founding father of Ethio-jazz, vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke, pays an extremely rare visit to Leeds. His utterly distinctive style is made up of a heady combination of jazz, funk, Latin swing, Afrobeat and Ethiopian harmonics. He combines the rhythms of his East African homeland with arrangements reminiscent of Ellington and Gil Evans. First flourishing in the ’Swinging Addis’ era of the late 1960s, Astatke became a legend in the West through the Éthiopiques series of recordings. With his own band of brilliant players, he reveals that at 70, he is still ever-inventive, visionary and the master of his form.

Asian Dub Foundation Live Soundtrack: La Haine

Asian Dub Foundation perform a live score for one of the most provocative, raw and relevant films made about urban youth, Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine. The film charts a day in the life of three characters in the Paris suburbs struggling against hopelessness and urban blight.

‘Asian Dub Foundation’s sound is a melting pot of jungly breakbeats, dub and dancehall flavours, and snaky guitar lines that morph from rock riffs into Indian sitars and back again’ Pitchfork

Asian Dub Foundation’s righteous mixture of punk, dub reggae, rap and clench-fist political commitment has taken them everywhere from a landmark performance on the troubled Bridgewater estate in London to David Bowie’s Meltdown Festival and venues all over the world. Epic and mould-breaking, don't miss this emotional rollercoaster ride of music and film.

His distinctive croon, that drops words gently into the air, reaches out to original arrangements and eclectic influences including Japanese court music and Tajikistani wedding marches. Moishe’s Bagel Moishe’s Bagel’s adrenaline-charged blend of Eastern European and jazz inflected klezmer music makes a fantastic live score for Mikhail Kalatozov’s remarkable 1930 Soviet propaganda silent film Salt for Svanetia. Kalatozov’s visually striking and, at times, disturbing film originally promoted Soviet measures to modernise the isolated Svan people of the Caucasus Mountains in north-west Georgia and is a dramatic combination of history and socialist realism. The evening will feature a full set from the band followed by the film and score after the interval. Val (Lesley Garrett) works the toilets in ‘Pleasure’, a hedonistic gay club in the north of England. For years, she’s been a shoulder to cry on and a confidante. She is much-loved but viewed as an enigma. Why is she still there? Why does she never leave? When a young man, both beautiful and unpredictable, arrives from the city and leaves a gift for Val, it marks the beginning of a passionate and violent night... Born in Liverpool in 1988, composer Mark Simpson won BBC Young Musician of the Year as a clarinettist in 2006 and also, that same year, received the accolade of BBC Young Composer of the Year – the only individual to have won both competitions. In 2010 he won the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Award. With a growing catalogue of works to his credit, his orchestral scores A Mirror-Fragment and Threads (both 2008) as well as sparks (2012) have all been well received. Pleasure sees Simpson turn to opera for the first time, collaborating with librettist Melanie Challenger. Highly sought after, and admired by peers, critics and audiences alike, Challenger’s works include a stunning selection of poetry and prose including the award-winning non-fiction book On Extinction. The duo recently received critical praise for their contribution to the Manchester International Festival, The Immortal, which was performed by the BBC Philharmonic.
