editor’s rave&review contrary to the talk I haven’t seen Kim thrusting her tatas

The Rumor Mill.

If it we’re an actual club in the Carolina’s it would probably be the most financially sound business in existence. Although there is no such place, it seems to produce a lot of talk. Kim’s big tits in people faces, clubs shutting down, and lord only knows what else. None of the above or most anything you probably hear is true. Granted as most gay men, I have a fascination for a nice rack but contrary to the talk I haven’t seen Kim thrusting her tatas in the faces of bar patrons. My question however is; Where is all this energy coming from? You know, the energy it takes to start and spread such juicy yet untrue gossip. A better question yet. Why don’t we channel that energy into, I dunno, positive outlets in our gay community? That my friends, is a question that may go years unanswered.

We are also mixing and mingling this summer with the first of many OnQ Exclusive Events. The first of these start in August with an event never before seen in North or South Carolina. GET YOUR DRINK ON WITH A HARD ON, a Cocktail with Pornstars type event is coming to Liaisons Pink House, Buck Wild, The Q Lounge, and other venues. What is it exactly? It is your opportunity to meet your favortie porn stars in a clean, intimate setting. Ask questions, get autographs, take photos, have a couple drinks, and even play games (mind’s out of the gutter please). These events will be roughly $7 per venue with a $2 discount for OnQ gayborhood members. VIP seating will be limited for $20 which entitles you to unlimited champagne and guaranteed talk time with your favorite star.

Let’s also quickly tackle one more rumor before moving on. Unless I am completely nieve to the world, none of the three publications in the Carolinas serving the gay community is out for blood. Officially, I would encourage a cooperation between our publications. A possible merger and exchange of talent could truly benefit the communities in which all three publications serve. Am I suggesting we do away with OnQ Carolina, Q-Notes, and Sterotypd in favor of one large publication? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I am saying that there is a lot that can be done - together. So take from this what you want but let it also plant the seed of better things to come.

Let’s wrap this up.

OnQ Carolina Edition is reaching out in the community further this summer. I am pleased to announce we are an official sponsor of the NC Gay & Lesbian Film Festival held in Durham this August. Did you know it’s one of the top five gay & lesbian film festivals in the country? If you’ve never been, I encourage you to go. We will be giving away tickets at various events this summer to help you get there. Learn more in future issue’s of our publication and of course our full page ad in the Film Festival Program Guide.

Be sure to check out our new nightlfie directory in this issue, our extended version of this issue online, and enjoy a safe holiday. Cheers!

Bunch We could ramble on all day about OnQ Carolina Editon. We could tell you that we’re the only gay publication in the Carolinas that prints 100% full color. We could slip in the fact that we’re the only ones who print on glossy recycled paper. We’d be boasting if we said that we are the only gay publication that had a large electronic distribution of over 6,000 subscribers on top of our 5,000 issues in print. You may call it bragging when we slip in that over 27,500 sets of eyes saw our last issue. Actually, I don’t think we need to say any of that at all. The covers from our first eight issues seen above, our ad rates on page 3, plus our 25% donation to pride through August 31st pretty much says it all.

So, I guess the only thing we can say is... Are You OnQ? Contact us today to see real results. (202) 567.8947 -or- jamie.seabolt@ruOnQ.com

becomes her how our gay & lesbian newspapers are disappearing You go out and find that your usual rag isn’t there anymore. The recession has impacted our daily lives and our habits. What happens though when the effects trinkle down so far that we lose our gay media? Some argue that the market is over saturated with publications catering to our niche market, however, where do we turn when all of these publications in a region expire?

the recession. In a statement to sister publication, The Washington Blade, Unger said: “We thank all of our readers, advertisers and editorial staff for their support throughout our more than 16-year history and hope that we can re-establish our relationship when times are better.

At the time, Unger also commented that the decision to suspend Genre did not have any impact The ripples of this economic fact can be felt in large on other publications produced by HX Media, gay meccas and small towns a like. Beginning in “In the current advertising market, small weekly papers first Quarter, Out- are in a rough position, no matter what they cover.” look Weekly, a thriving publication in Columbus Ohio, filled a much needed niche in that market. Window Media or Unite Media, which include the Not only was the weekly publication boasting 80+ Washington Blade, Southern Voice, South Florida pages but also organized the area’s gay business Blade, New York Blade and HX magazine. network (Outlook Executive Network). With out much notice the publication was forced to change “Those publications will continue to publish and ownership and rework itself; only printing one issue support their local communities.” per month. Since the change, the publication has boasted a maximum of 52 pages. Now, let’s skip ahead just a few months to More crippling yet is the effects on Window Media, the largest gay publisher in the U.S.. Close to home, they operate David Atlanta and Southern Voice, both in Atlanta. They also operated about a half dozen more, including the national magazine GENRE, as well as publications in partnership with HX media.

Until March. After years in business, Genre Magazine suspended publication, according to a statement by CEO David Unger, blaming the magazine’s failure on

this week.

An official announcement on June 30th discloses the end of yet another publication. This one in New York City. Putting to rumors to rest, the New York Press confirmed with owner-founder Matthew Bank on Tuesday that HX Magazine, another part of the Windo Media/HX Media group, had been sold. Bank, who built the magazine from a publication he distributed for free into a multimillion-dollar business, released the following statement to New York Press:

It’s better once you’re in.

“HX Magazine and the website hx.com have been sold. The new owners of HX Magazine will be releasing details and information on their plans for the future of the title shortly. In the meantime, Bank and HX Magazine publisher Gary Lacinski will be assisting them in the transition. HX Magazine issue 931 dated July 10th, which will be released on July 3rd, will be the last one produced by HX Media and its staff. “We’ve had an incredible time creating what we feel is the best local gay magazine the world has ever seen,” says Bank, “and I am proud that even in this difficult economy we were able to ensure that this magazine that is dear to the hearts of so many readers will be able to continue under capable new ownership.” That same day, HX Media confirmed that it still owned the rest of it’s gay publications, including New York City sister publication New York Blade.

That is, until we wake up the next morning. July 2nd, and the end of another great. Another publication under the operation of Window Media / HX Media goes silent. The second in a week and now two in the same city. The New York Blade, one of NYC’s only major gay papers, shut down. Its entire staff has been let go. The biweekly that has covered gay-interest news since 1997, suspended publication. “Everyone was let go, but the people on The Blade know that they may come back if The Blade is coming back,” said the executive, Matthew Bank, of HX Media. “Right, so, it’s folded, and if it happens to come back, then it will come back. We’ll see. In the cur-

rent advertising market, small weekly papers are in a rough position, no matter what they cover.”

Seems the worst has came? Not quite, the day isn’t over yet. In an official press release by Window Media, CEO David Unger resigned from his position after eight years with the company. Yes, this is the same Unger who in March at the demise of Genre Magazine, expressed that all the other publication would be fine. Is the problem bigger than we realize? Unger’s resignation leaves Mike Kitchens, chief operating officer of Window Media, and Steve Myers, chief financial officer, in charge of the company. In a joint statement, they said Unger’s resignation “was his decision” and the company “will continue to operate as normal, putting out the best weekly gay publications in the country.” continuted on page 11...

With so many publications folding so quickly, what does it mean for our community? In short, when retailers and services lose customers they stop advertising. When they stop advertising, especially in niche publications such as the one you are reading, how long before the publication goes under? The recession effects can be seen in all of the publications right here at home. Q-Notes, Stereotypd (formerly OIA), and even OnQ Carolina have dramatically reduced pages per issue. Advertisers are fewer and further between and rates have been slashed to mere pennies. Yet, the business still isn’t there. As a community, when do the people step up and help those publications that have gave them a voice for so many years? Where will our communities voice go when there is no longer local gay publications to amplify them? Not just in the Carolinas, but nationwide, we are losing our resources. So what do we do? Every individual can help. By supporting local gay businesses and patronizing those who advertise in gay newspapers. Not only do you help keep business local but by simply saying “Hey, I saw your ad, product, or sale, in my local gay newspaper”, it encourages them to keep advertising. If you know of a business that isn’t advertising, recommend that they jump on board. Rates are better than ever and it’s a great time to lock in those rates long-term, even once the economy booms again. Sometimes we take things for granted. Our nonprofits, our favorite bars, and even our local gay newspapers. The tragic truth is evident. Publications big and small are at risk, and after 40 years of pride we can’t afford to lose anymore voices. Q

djplay Peaches. I Feel Cream.

The gender blurring, sexually provocative queen of electronica is back! It’s been almost a decade since she unleashed “Fuck The Pain Away” a song so taboo and lustfully charged it took the world by storm. Even though there was never an official video for the song or any record of radio airplay other than late night college stations. It still managed to make an appearance in movies such as Jackass 2 and Lost In Translation. Hard to believe she recorded it in her bedroom but Merrill Beth Nisker aka Peaches is as dynamic as she is deviant. She plays her own instruments, makes her own beats, and even produces her own albums. Her new album “I Feel Cream” is just as controversial as any of her previous albums. Not being sure what tracks are actually radio releasable, my picks for singles would be “Serpentine” and “Mommy Complex”. Reminiscing of a Baltimore walk beat “Serpentine” is by far my favorite track on this album. Its simple but contagious with its “never a straight line” anti conformity lyrics. “Mommy Complex” is one of the more danceable tracks on this album. It rants “hush now baby, don’t you stress, I’m gonna fill your mommy complex” with an electronic melody over some choppy breaks.

FUN FACT ON PEACHES...

Peaches used to be roommates with fellow recording artist Feist. Before becoming Peaches Merrill was an elementary school music and drama teacher. www.PeachesRocks.com www.myspace.com/peaches

pride can be shown in many ways and this year to help our community show theirs, 25% of our adverisement revenue will serve as

donations.

A lot of hard work goes into the privileges we take for granted in our GLBTIQ community today. Since the historic 1969 stand at the Stonewall Inn, we’ve gained many rights, but as we know the fight is not over. Today’s pride events are just as important as the pride shown forty years ago. Festivals, parades, and community centers, are all priceless yet come with a heavy price tag. To help those that help us, OnQ Carolina Edition is giving back. For every advertisement sold between today and August 31st, OnQ Carolina Edition will donate 25% of the ad purchase price to an area pride organization of the advertisers choice. It’s that simple.

Advertisers choose one of the organizations below that they wish OnQ Carolina Edition to donate to. If they can’t decide, we split the donation evenly amongst them all!
