Hi everyone! Can you believe another year has come and gone? I know they say the older we get the faster it goes, but good golly that one just flew by! So off we go on another new adventure to see what 2014 has in store for us. Let us hope it is a good year for all of us and we have a lot of fun and exciting new adventures. Maybe it is time to get that bucket list out and see if we can check something off the list. There is no time like the present to get started! PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Saturday, January 4th and again on 18th. Tickets on sale for $3. Come enjoy a good filling breakfast cooked by Desert Shadows’ finest cooks. CRAFTS: All that are interested in doing crafts this season please come to the craft room on Wednesday, January 8th at 1pm. We welcome everyone and their ideas for some craft projects. LADIES FASHION SHOW: Monday, January 20th is the fashion show. Sales start at 10:00am to 1:00pm. There is a salad and dessert lunch at 11:30 and a sign up sheet in lobby to show you will attend and what salad or dessert you will bring. If you are interested in being a model please come to the activity office and inquire. It is a fun ACTIVITIES OFFICE HOURS TUESDAY– FRIDAY 9:00 - 12:00 ; 1:00 - 3:00

TALENT SHOW INTEREST: If you are interested in being in the talent show this season please plan on attending a meeting January 8th from 10:30 to 11:30am in the front auditorium. Jim Bontrager will be organizing the talent show and would like to see you at the meeting even if you aren’t convinced you want be in it or not. Just come see what is involved and if your interested. The talent show is always a lot of fun so come join in. VENDOR’S DAY: January vendor’s day is the 10th with sales starting at 10am. Donuts available in the morning and lunch at 11:30. There have been new vendors and new merchandise to see so come on out to see what all is available. SHOW: January 22nd will be a show by TRAVL *N* OPRY with Bruce and Betsy Mullen. The show will be at 7pm and is the Kick off for our Western Days. This is a very popular show with our residents and many requests to have them back again. So you don’t want to miss the show, stop in activ-

More Activities DANCES: Come join us each Saturday night for live music and dancing. See activity office for tickets to the shows: January 4th Jack & Smoking Rhythm Dudes (CRAZY HAT NIGHT) January 11th Exit 40 Band (YELLOW SHIRT NIGHT) January 18th Come Back Buddy (OLDIES DANCE) January 25th Cactus Country Band (WESTERN DAYS) WESTERN DAYS: Western days start off with the Wednesday night show, then Thursday, January 23rd we will have a Western theme for the Pot Luck Lunch at HIGH NOON. There will be a sign up sheet posted in the lobby just sign up and come and enjoy a fun lunch. Friday and Saturday will be fun filled Western Themed days. Watch for the postings of activities and schedule of events. Friday, NEW THIS SEASON, will be a Chili Cook Off at noon. If you are interested in entering the cook off there will be a sign up sheet in lobby. If you don’t want to cook chili then come and sample and vote on your favorite chili. After the Chili tasting we will head to the dessert table with our ever so famous Cake Walk. Again, if you would like to contribute a dessert for the cake walk there will be a sign up sheet in the lobby. The cake walk is a very popular event held at 1:30pm. After the cake walk and you probably will have worked up a thirst, so you can hit the saloon for a root beer float. Saturday we start our morning off with Donuts at 7:30am, then more fun and exciting events and games. When you are exhausted from all that fun you can head on over to the saloon for a Hot dog lunch and a root beer float. Remember just watch the bulletin board for further details and a schedule of all the events. See you there partner! Just don’t let the sheriff catch you along the way. Page 2

Check out our new photo timeline in our library. We put up several aerial helicopter photos of Desert Shadows that have been taken over the years showing the growth of Desert Shadows as well as the surrounding neighborhood. Some of you "old timers" can remember how it was, and the new folks can see how far we have come!

The Desert shadows theatre group is wondering how many Desert Shadows residents might be interested in putting on a play this year. We need lots of help!!!! Any and all interested residents please contact Shirlene Ankrum Lot 403 (509-559-2089) (It really is a lot of fun!)

Church News Jaunary 2014 The Desert Shadows Interdenominational Church meets in the Auditorium at 9AM on Sundays. Everyone is welcome.

Roger Withee and Patti Carman 19th-Celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Desert Shadows Church with Rev. Roger Withee and Becky Mendez. 26th. Rev B. Wade McKinley with Harry Goerz. Bible Study continues in January on Wednesdays from 2-3PM in the Back Auditorium with Rev. Roger Withee leading the study. The church will be printing a Church Directory. Anyone may have their name in the directory by filling out a form which will be available in January. There will be no charge for a printed copy of the directory. Email version will also be available. If you don't know where to start remember that you have to start somewhere to get somewhere, and doing NOTHING will get you nowhere.

INGREDIENTS  30 mini phyllo shells (two 1.9 -ounce packages; see Note)  1/2 medium apple, peeled and finely diced  5 large eggs  1 teaspoon Dijon mustard  1/4 teaspoon salt  Pinch of freshly ground pepper  Pinch of ground nutmeg  4 ounces Brie (1/2 small wheel), cut into 30 squares PREPARATION  Preheat oven to 350°F.  Arrange phyllo shells on a large parchmentlined baking sheet. Divide apple among the shells.  Whisk eggs, mustard, salt, pepper and nutmeg in a large measuring cup. Pour the egg mixture over the apple (do not overfill the shells). Place a Brie square in each shell.  Bake until the egg is set, the Brie is melted and the phyllo is starting to brown around the edges, about 15 minutes. Let cool slightly before serving. TIPS & NOTES Note: Mini phyllo shells, or fillo, are available in the freezer section near other frozen appetizers. They do not need to be defrosted before filling and baking.
