“How To Get Past the Velvet Rope”

“Bohemian Rhapsody” + “Cutting-Edge Magic”

Mark Gray is the first to admit that he spends too much time in Las Vegas nightclubs. A former nightclub public-relations manager, Mark is now a freelance writer for People, Rolling Stone and Wonderwall.com, so he doesn’t have many issues getting into the clubs he frequents. That made him the perfect go-to guy to tell us how to beat those pesky nightclub lines.

“I was really inspired by Helmut Newton’s iconic Polaroid images from the 1970s,” photographer Robert John Kley tells us. “I wanted to give the layout the look and feel of really being in a nightclub in the ‘70s. Spontaneous, gritty and real— the best kind of beauty.” Robert’s perfect night out is drinking whiskey in downtown Vegas’s dive bars with friends, and a couple pretty girls with tattoos.

Stylist Christie Moeller admits photographing fashion in a dark nightclub is challenging. “It was important that I paid special attention to texture and layering to make the clothing really pop!” she says of our Almost Famousthemed shoot. “What’s more groovy than a nightclub with 1970s-style bellbottoms, fringe and tons of fur.” Christie prefers concerts to nightclubs these days, so her ideal night out is dinner, drinks and a show at Brooklyn Bowl. “Fried chicken and tequila, please.”

Shep Morgan

Sabin Orr

Krystle Randall

“Packing a Punch”

“Meatball Madness” + “Bloody Mary”

“Bohemian Rhapsody” + “Soak Up the Sun”

Interviewing Jake Gyllenhaal was an eye-opener for entertainment journalist Shep Morgan. While he knew the actor immersed himself in his characters, Shep says Jake’s role in Southpaw may forever change the actor’s life. “He went from barely knowing anything about boxing to loving it. Now Jake’s not only a fan, but ready to get back into the ring whenever he can.”

Sabin Orr photographed meatballs at GIADA and everyone’s favorite brunch cocktail—the Bloody Mary—at Guy Fieri’s Kitchen + Bar. And while at age six, his mom’s meatloaf turned him off meatballs for life, he does enjoy a good brunch. “I always look at it as breakfast with more options,” he says. “Vegas has become a brunch happy city, which is fine for me. I could eat a great breakfast all day long.”

Krystle Randall created the stunning looks for our pool and nightclub fashion features. “Fresh and clean is how you should go to the pool,” she says. “Choose a nice tinted SPF face cream and add a pop of gloss on the lips. That’s all you need!” When day turns to night, Krystle recommends a neutral clean palette. “Nice skin and a contoured face with no dark shadows and no lashes. Less is more.”

OF At the Request of Her Husband, Céline Dion Returns to the Stage When Céline Dion stepped aside last year to care for her ailing husband, René Angélil, after he was diagnosed with throat cancer, her show-business career was put on hold indefinitely. Now, the international superstar is back in the spotlight at The Colosseum. “It’s going to be for him. I want to make him see me strong again,” she told reporters backstage at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas of her return to the Caesars Palace stage. “We wanted to come back. This is what we’ve done best together, so let’s still do it together. He wants me back. He wants me out there.”

You’ve always said, “family comes first.” How difficult has the last year been? Sickness is difficult for all family members, but I have enjoyed concentrating on being a wife and a mother this past year. That was my priority. Why is now the right time to return? It was René. He wanted to see me back onstage. He helped me to feel better about going back to performing and still be able to care for him and the kids. Are you excited? Indeed. I am excited to get back to perform onstage in front of my loyal fans. What does the stage represent to you? There is something magical about the stage. I love that part of my life. I love the live aspect of it. The moments created live between myself and the audience are incredible. What can we expect in terms of stage production and visuals with your new show? I have some new band members, and I still have the orchestra. I do not want to give more of the show; I will only say that the new visuals will be outstanding. There will be surprises for my fans. You’ve been performing in Las Vegas since 2003. Did you ever think you’d be approaching your 1,000th show here? I love performing in Las Vegas. When I first came here, they said I would never last. I hope to keep performing here as long as the fans allow. How long will that be? As long as I’m able to sing and perform. It’s part of my DNA. When you have time to relax and unwind, what do you do for yourself? Being with my family is my favorite thing. That’s what gives me the most joy.

He began developing his own shows before the age of ten— and took to the stage at the just-closed Riviera Hotel & Casino at 15. Now Mat Franco, the first magician ever to win NBC’s America’s Got Talent, is returning to Las Vegas for his first-ever residency at The LINQ Hotel & Casino. Franco, 27, says his show, “Magic Reinvented Nightly,” will “introduce magic to modern audiences in a non-traditional way.” Franco’s crowd-guided improvisational style will create a unique show every night. “The show is fully interactive,” he explains. “The crowd dictates what direction it goes in. Their decisions and energy can take the show down various paths.”

THE MATT PACK

Backed by a nine-piece band, sexy dancers and a loyal legion of fans, Matt Goss is bringing a Frank Sinatra-like vibe back to Caesars Palace. Las Vegas has been good to Matt Goss. The crooner with the velvet voice and Rat Pack-style has been performing each weekend at Caesars Palace for the past five years. Now his trademark fedora is fully in the ring as he begins a new residency that has him doing four shows a week. “When you walk into Caesars Palace, you sense history,” Goss says. “We felt there was a great opportunity to grow the show. Like anything you love, you want it to grow and reach more people.” Goss, who rose to fame as the lead singer of the 1980s British pop group Bros (his twin brother, Luke, played drums), is fond of his adopted city. “Las Vegas has really embraced me. They get what I’m trying to do—that’s to bring a fun, elegant show to the Strip. A lot of people say, ‘This is the Vegas we want to see.’”

MATT GOSS performs Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings in the Gossy Room at Caesars Palace.

But more important, these days, is his work for breastcancer awareness with the Susan G. Komen Foundation. “My beautiful mother passed away last year. She was everything to me. She was my best friend, my confidante,” he says. “We spoke after every single show, so to not have that is a massive void in my life. I had to do something in her honor, and Susan G. Komen to me is the most loving organization I’ve ever been around.” Goss even wrote the foundation’s anthem, “Strong,” to inspire people to fight. “You have to acknowledge your weaknesses and shortcomings. We all have them. With recognition, we can figure out the road map to our true potential. That’s the time when you find how strong and resilient you are. Convert your pain into better things, and more opportunities and growth will come.”

HOW TO GET PAST THE VELVET ROPE What You Need To Know To Experience Vegas Nightlife

NIGHTCLUB ETIQUETTE TIPS

NOT A VIP?

Here’s a little advice to speed up your wait in line.

DRAI'S BEACHCLUB • NIGHTCLUB THE CROMWELL

Talk about friends with benefits! In the ever-growing world of nightlife, Pasquale Romano and his team know the secret to getting you past the nightclub’s velvet rope.

BE PREPARED Most clubs sell tickets in advance. Go online and purchase ahead of time. You’ll still wait in line, but it will be a much shorter one. SOCIAL SKILLS Be polite. The doorman holds the key to the castle.

Over the last decade, Las Vegas has become known as much for its entertainment and nightlife as it has for its slot machines. In other words, it’s harder and harder to “be somebody” in this nonstop town.

“To really experience Vegas, a VIP table is the way to go. There’s nothing like it.”

As Caesars Entertainment’s Director of Hospitality and VIP Marketing, and someone with a nightlife background, Romano knows the tricks of the trade and readily shares his expertise to ensure that guests have the best Vegas experience possible. Granted, while Romano and his team’s focus is on all things non-gaming, much of their target is nightlife.

BE A LADIES MAN Groups of guys without a table go nowhere fast. Split up. Befriend some ladies (offer to pay their admission or buy their first round), and you’ll increase your odds to get in quicker.

“Nightlife is really the hook for everything right now,” he explains. His best tip for getting past the velvet rope: a VIP table. “Nowadays, if you have a relationship with someone and you’ve been a loyal customer, that’s really the only way to get in in a timely manner,” he says. “Nightclubs do offer line passes that you can purchase online, but to FOR VIP SERVICE, E-MAIL: really experience Vegas at its best, a VIP table is the way to hospitalityvip@caesars.com go. There’s nothing like it.”

DRESS TO IMPRESS Baseball caps, sneakers and baggy jeans are great for the game, not the club. A collared shirt, blazer, fitted denim jeans and dress shoes— even a tie—will do the trick. Look sharp. SENSIBLE STYLE Ladies, we know you want to look good, but keep comfort in mind. It’s going to be a long night. Choose a dress you can dance in and heels you can walk in with ease.

Along with being in dress code (a must), another way to get into a hot club is to use a VIP host as a liaison. “It’s so beneficial to know someone you can trust, who has great relationships throughout the city, and who can properly guide you in the right direction.”

Hangover Out in Las Vegas Can Be Legendary Helpers A(inNight more ways than one) BY MIA McNIECE

GEORGE CLOONEY In Three Words King of Cool Thoughts on a Hangover “Don’t get one. Don’t live at full tilt.”

So you overdid it last night. It’s Vegas. It happens. Now as you sit in your suite— dry-mouthed with head pounding—you’re contemplating the cure. Unfortunately, the only surefire treatment for a hangover is time, rest and rehydration. Some traditional hangover remedies are more myth than fact and may actually make you feel worse. With the help of Hollywood nutritionist, Lisa De Fazio, we tackle what’s fact and what’s fiction.

Hair of the Dog? one Bacon Bloody Mary GUY FIERI’S VEGAS KITCHEN & BAR THE LINQ HOTEL & CASINO

While the thought of a Bloody Mary may appeal to you, a Virgin Mary is a better option. Tomato juice is packed with simple sugars that help raise glucose levels, while booze only adds to your problems. “Hangovers make you feel as if a truck hit you because alcohol is toxic; you need to give your body time to recover. That morning drink could lead to an even worse hangover the following day,” De Fazio explains. But if you insist, then a Bloody Mary is the way to go.

THE LINQ HOTEL & CASINO

Does Greasy Heal Queasy? Although there’s no scientific evidence that greasy food eases a hangover, many swear it works. Instead, De Fazio suggests eating plain, starchy foods. “Hangovers cause your blood sugar levels to drop. Plain carbs will help increase your blood sugar and settle your stomach.” Crackers, toast and honey sandwiches are helpful, she says. So are eggs and pancakes, which make the Tractor Driver Combo at Hash House A Go Go an ideal dish.

three

Recovery Foods Get back to basics. “Pretzels and bananas!” De Fazio says. “Foods high in salt and potassium contain electrolytes and are helpful because they prevent further dehydration.” Chicken noodle and other soups, including ramen, are also great morning remedies. “The broth rehydrates and restocks sodium levels,” she says. New Man Ramen Soul-soothing ramen from Chef Nobu Matsuhisa will make you feel like a “new man.” The chicken-pork broth is accompanied by bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, corn, and a soft-boiled egg, then topped with pork belly. Available on the in-room dining menu for guests staying at Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace.

What To Drink? You’re dehydrated. Hence, that cottonmouth feeling when you wake up. It’s time to treat your body right—and that means “sport drinks like Gatorade, which contain electrolytes and are meant to rehydrate and replenish lost nutrients” says De Fazio. Freshly squeezed fruit juices, like those found at Squeeze at The LINQ Promenade, coconut water and anti-hangover cures— RESQWATER and Osmosis harmonized water—all help to flush out toxins. You may, however, want to skip the morning cup of Joe. Coffee can worsen the effects of a hangover.

Clinically tested and recommended by medical experts, a bottle of RESQWATER with every couple drinks and another before bed will combat the negative effects of alcohol. Available at Interlude and Drai’s at The Cromwell and Emperor’s Essentials at Caesars Palace.

OSMOSIS WATER This harmonized H2O minimizes hangover symptoms and improves morningafter energy levels. Available at The Spa at The LINQ Hotel & Casino, and Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace.

The newest addition to the bar scene at Paris Las Vegas is Le Central, a plush lounge that’s serving some rather innovative drinks. Mixologist Eddie Perales created a cocktail menu bursting with exotic flavors. His French Martini adds mulberry, orgeat and egg whites to Ciroc pineapple vodka and lemon sour for a fresh take on an original, while cinnamon-raisin honey syrup ups the ante on the traditional Sidecar. And real smoke brings richness to the Smoking Manhattan. Groups can sip the Instagram-worthy Vodka Berry Lemonade Porthole—a sweet punch cocktail that serves four people—while relaxing in the comfy lounge.

MICHAEL BOYCHUCK COLOR—A SALON BY MICHAEL BOYCHUCK CAESARS PALACE

Don’t Fear the BEARD Let’s face it. Beards are back. And whether you’re meticulously groomed or your growth is more wild and woolly, you need to know how to manage your whiskers. Shave guru Elliott Chester, of Elliott & Co. at The LINQ Hotel & Casino, is here to help.

Tame That MANE Still sporting the same tired ’do for the past couple years? It’s probably time for a refreshed look. Michael Boychuck, owner of COLOR Salon at Qua Baths & Spa, runs down the latest hair trends for men. Season’s “It” Hairstyle The Gentlemen’s Cut is still pretty popular. Either the pompadour or a tight, tapered, polished cut with a side part. Fun with the Man Bun They’re made to be messy, but a bit more polished on the front and sides. They typically look better with facial hair. Stay Gray or Dye Trying? Gray. It’s more distinguished. If they would like to add color, we suggest a more blended, natural-looking shade. This is best achieved with a demipermanent because the line of demarcation [where the roots grow out] will not be as harsh as it would be with a permanent color; the color will just fade nicely.

ELLIOTT CHESTER ELLIOTT & CO. THE LINQ HOTEL & CASINO

Beard Grooming Be consistent with your grooming habits. Guys will come to the barbershop to get their beards trimmed, but then go weeks without grooming. It’s easier to keep necklines, cheek lines, and lip lines nice and sharp if you shave unwanted hair at least every other day. Three Tools for Beard Aficionados Invest in a quality straight razor, a barber’s comb with fine and medium teeth, and a beard and moustache trimmer. A trimmer with a charger tends to be more powerful and lasts longer. The Perfect Shave Shave at the end of your shower. Heat and steam opens your pores. This makes facial hair soft and helps the razor cut through with less resistance. Use a quality three-part shaving system consisting of pre-shave oil, a glycerin-based shaving cream and a post-shave balm. Always end by closing the pores with cold water.

GROOMING PRODUCTS

Tools of the trade: cleansers, sprays and oils will keep your whiskers clean and healthy. Chester recommends washing your beard 3–4 times a week using Mitch Double Hitter— a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner. Available at Elliott & Co., The LINQ Hotel & Casino

Invest in a good straight razor. Doubleedged blades allow for more control and a closer shave.

COLOR—A Salon by Michael Boychuck GROOMING PRODUCTS

Say good-bye to lifeless hair. A dab of GO24·7 Pomade ($16) adds body and texture, leaving hair looking thicker and fuller. Available at COLOR— A Salon by Michael Boychuck.

Miley Cyrus—who began her stay by posting an Instagram photo of herself and fashion model Stella Maxwell on the 4,700-square-foot terrace—was particularly fond of the villa’s artwork by Takashi Murakami, whose pieces she collects. Earlier that month, pop prince Justin Bieber toasted his 21st birthday at OMNIA Nightclub in Caesars Palace, before returning to the villa with a few friends for a pre-dawn afterparty. And following the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, Taylor Swift celebrated her eight (yes, eight) Billboard wins with Calvin Harris, Ed Sheeran and a large group of friends, transforming the villa into a party palace with a prop-filled photo booth.

The master suite boasts a private deck with a live Japanese maple tree and onsen Jacuzzi with room for up to six people. Take Poolside Partying to the Next Level

SOAK UP THE SUN When the nightclub scene erupted in Las Vegas, the next logical step was to capture and corral the music-loving partygoers while the sun was still shining. And so the day club was born. Now party pools are in full swing, and the best way to experience one is to join the cabana club. Amenities in these plush VIP retreats include televisions, fresh-fruit platters, dining delivery and bottle service. Here are three party pools with the most picturesque settings in Las Vegas.

Ten cabanas— complete with fresh fruit and veggies upon arrival, plus a refrigerator stocked with bottled water and the antihangover drink RESQWATER—ring the complex. The LINQ Hotel & Casino also sports 25 cabana suites with a patio connecting the room directly to the pool. At The Cromwell, Drai’s Beachclub takes poolside partying to new heights. Perched above the iconic Las Vegas Strip, the rooftop pool redefines the day club experience with performances from renowned deejays and a view unlike anywhere in the city. Rent one of the 15 mezzanine cabanas or nine bungalows, each with a private shower and restroom, for a bird’s-eye view of the 30,000-square-foot pool deck. Best in Dining The past decade has seen Chefs Guy Savoy, François Payard and Gordon Ramsay arrive, and New York dining institutions Rao’s, Old Homestead Steakhouse and Serendipity 3 all open at the property. But changes have been fast and furious over the past couple years. Since the opening of the world’s first Nobu Hotel in April 2013, Caesars Palace has renovated its sports book, poker room and food court; introduced Searsucker and three upscale lounges—FIZZ Las Vegas, Lobby Bar and VISTA Cocktail Lounge; opened OMNIA Nightclub; and added Mariah Carey and Reba, Brooks & Dunn to its growing list of resident entertainers.

“We will never stop reinventing Caesars Palace.” —Gary Selesner

“We are obsessed with remaining fresh and relevant,” says Caesars Palace president Gary Selesner, who explains the importance of covering all aspects of the resort experience starting with dining. “Restaurants are critical,” he says. “Our guests have discriminating tastes. They expect the highest quality, most variety and best execution—whether from our collection of the most famous chefs in the world, the 500-dish Bacchanal Buffet, or the pizza, hamburgers, ramen or tacos in our Forum Food Court."

I am proud to say with OMNIA, VISTA Cocktail Lounge and the new Lobby Bar, we have created concepts that satisfy all the demands of the younger generation, as well as guests who look for quality in their libations and excellence in service.”

Meatball Madness P H O T O G R A P H E D O N L O C AT I O N AT G I A D A I N T H E C R O M W E L L

Where To Find the Ultimate Comfort Food Meatballs are meatballs, right? Well, not when they’re in the hands of Giada De Laurentiis. At The Cromwell, she’s rolling two non-conventional versions—one stuffed with orzo and another, a chickenmarsala meatball accompanied with cherry tomatoes and roasted wild mushrooms.

CHICKEN MARSALA MEATBALLS GIADA THE CROMWELL

Of her orzo meatball, De Laurentiis chuckles, “It’s got pasta in it. It’s kind of traditional.” You will, however, find true traditional meatballs, like Buca Café Italiano’s huge half-pounder, all over the city with differences ever so slight. Most, of course, are based on a family recipe that’s been passed down and perfected over the years. Steve Martorano simplified this fact to Jimmy Kimmel: “Everybody’s mother makes meatballs. My mother made the best. Your mother made the best. That’s the way it is.” While Martorano soaks day-old Italian bread in water and drains it to make his meatballs moist, Glenn Rolnick, corporate chef for Carmine’s, says his secret to a tender, flavorful dish is to hand-roll and hand-mix two parts ground beef chuck and one part ground veal “to keep the texture lighter.” Rao’s Frank Pellegrino, Jr., says making meatballs is easy. Use the best ingredients available and add some love. “The secret to making anything good—whether it’s in the kitchen or in life—is love. You have to love what you’re doing. Everything about the food we do is made with nothing but love that has been passed on from generation to generation. It’s how you feel when you’re putting it together.”

Inspired by Helmut Newton’s innovative Polaroid images from the 1970s, our fashion photo shoot features the intimate, seductive areas of Drai’s Nightclub and Afterhours inside The Cromwell. Combined with the power of the paparazzi flash, photographer Robert John Kley was able to capture the essence of the ’70s for our “Bohemian Rhapsody” fashion layout.

Capturing the VIBE Bring out your wild child in seventies styles at Drai’s Nightclub • Afterhours

ALL DRAI’S LONG Day and night, Drai’s Beachclub • Nightclub • Afterhours is an around-the-clock party. Start at Drai’s Beachclub for some sun and fun on the Strip’s only rooftop pool deck. After dinner and a wardrobe change, return to the nightclub and dance under the towering 80-sided LED disco ball to the beats pumped out by Drai’s resident deejays. In the mood for more? Wind down as the sun comes up at Drai’s Afterhours—a space in the basement of The Cromwell.

DRAI’S LIVE BRINGS THE BEATS In the land of the celebrity deejay, Drai’s Beachclub • Nightclub has taken a new programming approach—booking acts to perform miniconcerts instead. Drai’s LIVE focuses on giving artists the “opportunity to showcase their music as well as their personality,” says Michael Gruber, CEO and Partner of Drai’s Enterprises. Sets run from 30 minutes

“Artists are able to experiment with new material, talk to the audience, and not have to be as choreographed as they would in an arena. They have more freedom, and the shows are a little wilder.” Upcoming acts at The Cromwell club include Capital Cities, Big Sean, J. Cole, The Weeknd, Chris Brown, and Chromeo, to name a few. The Glenrothes 1968 Vintage Extraordinary Single Cask, $9,250

With only 145 bottles available globally, this exquisite whiskey is a true collector’s piece. Distilled in 1968 and bottled in 2013, this is a vintage 45-year-old whiskey bottled at cask strength. Like all the Glenrothes, it is completely natural in color and is a testament to craftsmanship and perfection. The taste features notes of peaches and cream, followed by leather and rose petal.

Patek Philippe Grand Complications, $106,700

The Grand Complications is a unique and exquisite representation of a perpetual calendar with a retrograde date display. All Patek Philippe timepieces are handmade, and the copper dial gives an elegant, vintage feel. Like the Glenrothes, this piece is for someone with an appreciation for fine craftsmanship.

Glenglassaugh 40-Year-Old, $3,000

Specially selected by distillery owner and whiskey expert Billy Walker, this is an outstanding representation of a rare and enduring Highland single malt. Matured for over 40 years, this rich whiskey has an abundance of sweet tropical fruits and sophisticated sherry notes.

Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Chronograph Perpetual Calendar, $133,700

Not just a chronograph, this Vacheron Constantin timepiece is paired with a perpetual calendar complication, making it worthy of the highly coveted Geneva seal—and mirroring the character and complexity of the Glenglassaugh.

L O YA L I S T

GlenDronach 21-Year-Old, $170

This big, bold, smoky whiskey is bottled at 46% ABV to help deliver a freight train of flavor. BenRiach handcrafts its whiskey and honors the traditional methods of production, including floor malting its own barley (one of only a handful of distilleries still doing this). Soot, smoke and charred embers are wrapped in a luscious allspice taste and honey finish.

Rich and elegant with an understated sophistication, this dram is a hidden gem. The sister distillery to BenRiach, GlenDronach follows suit in its amazing ability to wow. Raisins, dried fruits and spiced oak make this 21-year-old whiskey truly delicious.

Panerai Radiomir S.L.C. 3 Days Acciaio-47mm, $8,300

Loyal to its legacy, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay’s DNA remains rooted in the Tudor Submariners from the 1950s. The timepiece is rich and elegant with its aged leather strap, but maintains an understated sophistication like its predecessor.

Created in 1938 for the Royal Italian Navy as the first Panerai watch, the Radiomir is a bold and imposing timepiece with an oversized case and striking personality reminiscent of the BenRiach. The color palette of the distressed strap and smoky dial matches the flavor tones of the whiskey.

All muscle, tattoos and attitude, Jake Gyllenhaal is virtually unrecognizable in Southpaw. That’s the way he wanted it, because Gyllenhaal loves to disappear into a role. Oscar buzz already surrounds his knockout performance as Billy Hope, the undefeated lightweight boxing champion of the world, who faces hard times in the film. After the tragic death of his wife, the boxer battles to retain custody of his young daughter and gets one more shot at hanging on to his title in a comeback fight to the finish at Caesars Palace.

Have you always been a fight fan? I wasn’t really an avid fan until I began preparing for Southpaw. [Director] Antoine Fuqua and I talked early on—before the movie was even sure to get made—about what it would take to make a wholly original boxing film. Antoine described the journey and what would be needed in one word: “sacrifice.” That didn’t just mean training hard. It meant devoting ourselves to the film, like a boxer would to an upcoming fight; but it also meant getting to know and understand the fight game. We went to fight after fight and watched every piece of footage we could get our hands on. During that process, I fell in love with boxing. Everyone was amazed by your physical transformation. But I found it fascinating that you said you also learned to think like a boxer and that this helped you as an actor. Could you expand on what it means to think like a boxer? Is fighting really like a chess game? The process of creating a character is an interesting one. Every actor has his or her own style and techniques. I personally like to make sure that I live and breathe in the world my character will exist in for months before even an inch of film is rolled. Explaining what thinking

Jake Gyllenhaal Filmography

like a boxer would be like is presumptuous because I am not one. I would say that it really has to do with instinct. There cannot really be a whole lot of thinking. It’s about training the body, and the mind as well, to react. Making movement and reaction time an unconscious thing. We can’t ignore the six-pack. How tough was the physical part? What was the biggest challenge? Did it take a lot out of you? Like I said before, sacrifice was the name of the game. I spent hundreds of hours just learning how to throw a jab, and thousands more just on footwork alone. Of course it took a lot out of me. But my job is a blessing. And everything it took out of me got put back into the film, which I am so proud of.

What about getting prepared to make the punches you were throwing look authentic—which they did. Did your sparring partners go easy on you? Were you actually hurt or at least knocked down? Did you ever feel like you could go a few rounds for real? Yes, I got knocked down. Though over the long term we did a lot of body sparring—so I got dropped with body shots that I would rather not remember. I got popped pretty hard while shooting. That’s where we really went all out. You trained at Floyd Mayweather’s gym in Las Vegas. What kind of help did you get there? Any tips from the man himself? The man was not there when we were. But I’m about energy. I picked up a lot of good energy in that gym. And Mayweather taught me from afar. I’ve watched every one of his fights. You were front and center at the “Fight of the Century?” Who were you rooting for? Did you look at the fight differently after having filmed Southpaw? I was rooting for Manny [Pacquiao]. Southpaw taught me so much about the fight game. I was watching the minutiae of the fight. Not the big punches that make the crowd roar. I was watching two fighters box and even though many people were disappointed, I think Manny boxed beautifully. A Vegas fight seems like a performance as well as a contest. When you stepped into the ring for your scenes, did it feel like that? What is it that makes Vegas the fight capital of the world? Billy Hope is a quiet character. The only place Billy can be an animal is in the ring. And I suppose that’s a good analogy for how most people feel in Vegas. Their normal lives are quiet, but in Vegas they’re animals. The relationship between Billy Hope and his daughter is really the heart of the story. What kind of relationship did you and Oona Laurence have during filming? I think Oona is one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with. She is young, but her timing, her instinct and her ability to improv are incredible. I think that all comes from the fact that she lives a normal life. I think her ability to trust wholly in a scene without judgment is what I admire about her as an actress.

Will you ever box again just for fun? I am still training. I will never stop. Boxing will always be a part of my life. You seem to have gravitated toward playing characters that push you out of your comfort zone? Are you looking for that kind of challenge when you take on a new role? Always. What is life without risk? Luckily, my job gives me the opportunity to ask myself that question daily. I think we learn about ourselves when we're pushed outside of our comfort zone. We not only become stronger, but wiser. That’s not to say that I’m all that wise, but I would like to get there someday.

« WHAT IS LIFE

Speaking of taking a step out of your comfort zone, there was the challenge of starring in Constellation on Broadway. Glad you took the leap? Was it any different than you expected? Strangely, I feel most comfortable onstage. More so than in front of the camera, ironically. It was a joy and honor to be on Broadway. Anything different than I expected? Well, in the end, the magic wears down and you are left to just do your work—show up every night and dig deep into the show at hand. I love that about the theater. But Broadway is something different. Every night is unexpected.

WITHOUT RISK? I think we learn about ourselves when we’re pushed outside of our comfort zone. »

You’ve been working pretty much nonstop for quite a while. Aren’t you ready for a little rest and relaxation? Always up for some relaxation. But I got more rounds in me. I want to get back in there.

Behind the Lens

Director Antoine Fuqua [Training Day, The Equalizer] found quite the pupil in casting Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw. Leaning on his own experience, Fuqua, who has been boxing for more than 20 years, says it was Gyllenhaal’s commitment to the part that made the film so powerful. “He trained with me four to six months prior to shooting and did everything I asked him to do to prepare for this role,” he says. “Jake had to really box, and we worked with real boxers to spar with him to ensure it was as authentic as possible. He got punched in the face and ribs. I had to hold him back. Boxing truly is a sweet science, and it’s the small details that really matter.”

CLASH OF THE TITANS Boxing Highlights at Caesars Palace

Caesars ruled boxing during the sport’s golden age. During the 1980s and 90s, the biggest names in boxing—Sugar Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya and Muhammad Ali—all fought for, or defended, their championship belts under the stars at the Caesars Outdoor Arena. Here’s a look at Caesars Palace’s best fights.

MUHAMMAD ALI VS. LARRY HOLMES OCTOBER 2, 1980

THE ACADEMY IS WATCHING

This was the second-to-last bout of Ali’s career. The champ just wasn’t himself and Holmes, his former sparring partner, pounded and taunted Ali for ten rounds before the fight was stopped.

MUHAMMAD ALI

THE LAST HURRAH LARRY HOLMES VS. MUHAMMAD ALI

Hollywood is fascinated with boxing. Tales of against-the-odds fighters rising to the top have connected with audiences and Oscar voters for decades. Jake Gyllenhaal is hoping his performance in Southpaw is received as well as these were by the Academy. RAGING BULL

CAESARS PALACE

Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece—the tale of self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta—was a blood fest of a film that won Robert De Niro an Academy Award.

RAGING BULL ROBERT DE NIRO

SUGAR RAY LEONARD VS. THOMAS HEARNS SEPTEMBER 16, 1981 Leonard dominated the first six rounds. Then, Hearns mounted an incredible comeback, prompting Leonard’s trainer, Angelo Dundee, to warn his fighter, saying, “You’re blowing it now, son—you’re blowing it.” Leonard rallied and beat Hearns in the 14th round.

LARRY HOLMES VS. GERRY COONEY

LARRY HOLMES EVANDER HOLYFIELD

JUNE 11, 1982 After having already fought ten times at Caesars—all victories— Holmes was to face his biggest challenge yet. Caesars even expanded the arena, and with a record attendance of 29,214, Holmes won by a technical knockout in the 13th.

MARVIN HAGLER VS. THOMAS HEARNS APRIL 15, 1985 To this day, Hagler-Hearns is still considered the best fight in boxing history. Dubbed the “eight-minute war,” the boxers traded vicious haymakers (Hearns broke his hand landing a punch to Hagler’s head) until a bloodied Hagler ended the fight in the third.

RIDDICK BOWE VS. EVANDER HOLYFIELD NOVEMBER 6, 1993 Expectations were high but this fight—which Holyfield won by majority decision—is most remembered for James “Fan Man” Miller, who parachuted into the ring during the seventh round.

ROCKY Nominated for ten Oscars (it won three), Sylvester Stallone’s story of an everyday boxer getting a shot at the title struck a chord with audiences.

MILLION DOLLAR BABY The gut-wrenching story of a female boxer swept the award season, earning Hilary Swank her second Oscar, while winning two Academy Awards for Clint Eastwood (Best Picture and Best Director).

THE FIGHTER The sports biopic about light welterweight champ Micky Ward, played by Mark Wahlberg, received seven Oscar nods, with supporting actors Christian Bale and Melissa Leo taking home the hardware.

MARYS AMERICA’S BRUNCH BEVERAGE Whether it was named after Hollywood actress Mary Pickford, Queen Mary of England—or a waitress named Mary who worked at a Chicago bar called the Bucket of Blood—is still up for debate. But whatever the origin, one thing is clear: The Bloody Mary has become the restorative cocktail of over-indulgers.

The ultimate go-to hangover beverage of choice for many, the drink has acquired a cult-like following and is now accompanied with everything from bacon to shrimp. So how did that signature celery stalk make it into the glass in the first place? The credit goes to an impatient drinker at the Ambassador East Hotel in 1960s Chicago, who, lacking a swizzle stick, grabbed a nearby stalk to stir the drink. But do you eat it? “Yes, if you’re hungry,” says Salvatore Calabrese, mixologist at Bound in The Cromwell. “Otherwise, stir and put to one side.” 90

Pinch of celery salt 1–2 dashes Tabasco sauce Black pepper to taste TO BUILD: Pour the tomato and lemon juice over ice in a highball glass and add the vodka. Add spices and stir. To aerate, rather than shake, gently roll the mixture from one shaker to another (without ice) several times. Strain into the glass over fresh ice. Add black pepper and garnish with a wedge of lime and celery stick. Recipe courtesy of Classic Cocktails by Salvatore Calabrese

“I WROTE A BOOK ABOUT HANGOVER CURES TO ASK FORGIVENESS FROM ALL MY GOOD FRIENDS WHOM I GAVE FAR TOO MUCH OF A GOOD TIME THE NIGHT BEFORE.” —SALVATORE CALABRESE Salvatore Calabrese, the inventor of another iconic morning starter, the Breakfast Martini served at Bound in The Cromwell, says of the brunch beverage. “A Bloody Mary for me is always like cooking a steak; there are always questions to ask. Don’t assume that everyone wants it spicy,” he says before explaining the drink’s hourly evolution. “The Bloody Mary changes throughout the day. First thing in the morning, it’s almost like a pick-me-up, so it’s richer, stronger, has less citrus and is more peppery. In the middle of the afternoon, it becomes lighter; and by evening, it’s a long, refreshing drink—the citrus comes up more vividly, and the spiciness is less.”

Sometimes wacky works. How else can you explain Penn & Teller’s latest trick—a vanishing cow named Elsie, disguised as an elephant, ringed by audience members holding hands. “It’s the hardest trick we’ve ever done,” admits Penn Jillette, saying the illusion took six years to develop. “Magic with [live animals] is always very difficult because you can’t compress it and fold it up. It’s incredibly stupid, but it’s magic nobody can figure out.”

S

harp wit and mute force have kept Penn & Teller performing together for the past 40 years. And throwing knives at your partner without seriously maiming him isn’t as easy as it looks.

Over those four decades, Teller has learned this about working with Penn: They’re both perfectionists. “I didn’t know how important it was to disagree. Harmony is of no damn use. We fight over every idea, arguing about it and stretching it until it becomes something better than what either of us thought it could ever be.” Adds Penn, “A lot of the joy is disagreeing because most of, virtually everything, we argue about, is what’s happening onstage in the show—how to make it better. That’s the fun of it; that’s the interaction.” And that’s why these two talented entertainers are still amazing audiences with innovative illusions.
