Todo ello aquí, en el Caribe, entre la indomable y siempre verde Cordillera de Talamanca, las infinitas selvas del norte y el mágico azul del Mar Caribe, que marcan nuestras fronteras naturales.

All of it here, in the Caribbean, between the indomitable and evergreen Talamanca Mountain Range, the endless jungle of the north and the magic blue of the Caribbean Sea, marking our natural borders.

El Caribe de Costa Rica posee una naturaleza salvaje, de idílicos paisajes y ecosistemas que desbordan vida, una riqueza biológica de valor incalculable.
The Caribbean of Costa Rica has a wild nature, idyllic landscapes and ecosystems full of life, a priceless biological richness.
Costa Rica se encuentra en el hemisferio Norte, a medio camino entre el Ecuador y el Trópico de Cáncer, al sur de América Central, limita al norte con Nicaragua con la que comparte 300 km. de frontera y al sur con Panamá con la que comparte 363 km., al oeste con el Océano Pacífico y al Este con el Mar Caribe.
Costa Rica is located in the northern hemisphere, halfway between Ecuador and the Tropic of Cancer, south of Central America, bordered to the north by Nicaragua with which it shares 300 km. border and to the south by Panama with which it shares 363 km., to the west with the Pacific Ocean and to the east with the Caribbean Sea.
Costa Rica cuenta con 51.100 Km2, un 0,03% de la superficie mundial y está considerado uno de los 20 países con mayor diversidad de especies, pues alberga cerca del 4,5% de las especies conocidas. Cerca de un 25% del territorio se encuentra protegido dentro de un área de conservación. Desde sus orígenes como territorio ístmico Costa Rica ha sido un puente biológico donde coexisten especies de flora y fauna pertenecientes al neo ártico, al neo trópico y algunas de las Antillas. El país posee una densa cubierta vegetal rica en variedad de especies, los bosques cubren 1/3 de la superficie del territorio nacional.
Costa Rica has 51,100 km2, 0.03% of the world’s surface and is considered one of the 20 countries with greatest diversity of species, as it hosts about 4.5% of known species. About 25% of the territory is protected within a conservation area. From its origins as Isthmian territory Costa Rica has been a biological bridge where species of flora and fauna belonging to the Arctic neo, the neo tropics and some of the Antilles coexist. The country has a dense vegetation cover of a rich variety of species, forests cover 1/3 of the country´s area.
These forests are home to 12,117 species of plants, including more than 1,300 species of orchids and 2,000 species of trees. They are home to over 230 species of mammals, 207 terrestrial and 23 aquatic, of which 21 correspond to cetaceans, including whales, dolphins and manatees. They have a variety of 850 bird species, of which about 625 are residents and 225 are migratory, among amphibians more than 180 species are counted, about 200 species of reptiles and 150 species of freshwater fish.
Estos bosques albergan 12.117 especies de plantas, incluidas más de 1.300 especies de orquídeas y 2.000 especies de árboles. Son el hogar de más de 230 especies de mamíferos, 207 terrestres y 23 acuáticas, de las cuales 21 corresponden a cetáceos, entre ellos ballenas, delfines y el manatí. Existe una variedad de unas 850 especies de aves, de las que unas 625 serían residentes y 225 migratorias, entre los anfibios se cuentan más de 180 especies, unas 200 especies de reptiles y más de 150 especies de peces de agua dulce.

LA VERTIENTE CARIBEÑA
THE CARIBBEAN SLOPE
El Caribe costarricense se encuentra situado en la vertiente occidental del país, separado del valle central por una abrupta cadena montañosa. Está enmarcado dentro de la provincia de Limón y por su ubicación geográfica está en la zona tropical. Es un área dominada por abruptas montañas, colinas, gran número de ríos, extensas llanuras de inundación y un litoral de 212 km. sobre el Mar Caribe.
The Costa Rican Caribbean is located on the western slope of the country, separated from the central valley by a steep mountain range. It is framed within the province of Limón and its geographical location is in the tropical area. It is dominated by rugged mountains, hills, numerous rivers, vast floodplains and a coastline of 212 km area on the Caribbean Sea. Because the altitude range is very wide you find very different Life Zones, such as sea level coastal landscapes to moor landscapes above 3,000 m altitude, which has established a great diversity of microclimates and a great influence on biodiversity, that stands out for its large number of animal and plant species and for the variety of its ecosystems.
Debido a que el rango de altitud es muy amplio se localizan Zonas de Vida muy diferentes, que incluyen desde paisajes litorales a nivel del mar hasta paisajes de páramo sobre los 3.000 m. de altitud, esto ha establecido una pluralidad de microclimas y una gran influencia sobre la biodiversidad, que destaca por el elevado número de especies animales y vegetales y por la variedad de ecosistemas.

The oldest and most prominent formations in the relief of the Caribbean region are found in the Cordillera de Talamanca, where its tops were once covered by glaciers and whose rise was due to the pressure exerted by the Coco´s plate against the Caribbean plate.
Las formas más antiguas y prominentes en el relieve de la región caribeña las encontramos en la Cordillera de Talamanca, donde sus cimas alguna vez estuvieron cubiertas por glaciares y cuyo levantamiento se debió a la presión que ejercía la placa del Coco contra la placa del Caribe.
The Talamanca Mountain Range is180 km long, it begins at the east of the Central Valley with a northwest-southeast orientation, with two rows perpendicular to the axis, one towards the Pacific and the Matama one which has gentle slope towards the Caribbean. The mountain range continues in Panama with the name of Cordillera de Chiriquí and has peaks over 3,000 m altitude, such as Cerro Kämuk or the Cerro Chirripó, the highest of the country, with 3,820 meters.
La Cordillera de Talamanca tiene una longitud de 180 km., se inicia al este del Valle Central con una orientación noroeste-sureste, con dos filas perpendiculares al eje, una hacia el Pacífico y la Fila de Matama, de pendiente suave hacia el Caribe. La cordillera continúa en Panamá con el nombre de Cordillera de Chiriquí y cuenta con picos que superan los 3.000 m. de altitud, como el Cerro Kámuk o el Cerro Chirripó, el más alto del territorio nacional, con 3.820 msnm.

of Limón and the Caribbean littoral. They are flat lowlands which narrow to the south until they disappear in Cahuita.

Valle de la Estrella is an intermountain valley bounded by the spurs of the Matama row and the Talamanca mountain range, with a slope declining towards the coast of Cahuita. To the South of it you find the extensive river valley of the Sixaola River, where the Telire, Coen, Lari, Urén and Yorkín rivers converge, region known as the Talamanca Valley or Low Talamanca, a flat area surrounded by hills covered with lush vegetation.
El Valle de la Estrella es un valle inter montano, delimitado por las estribaciones de la Fila de Matama y la Cordillera de Talamanca, con una pendiente que declina hacia la costa de Cahuita. Al sur de éste se encuentra el extenso valle fluvial del río Sixaola, donde confluyen los ríos Telire, Coen, Lari, Urén y Yorkín, región conocida como Valle de Talamanca o Baja Talamanca, una zona plana rodeada de cerros con vegetación exuberante.
The Atlantic Coast is known for being straight with a length of 212 km., which runs from Punta Castilla on the north to the Sixaola River. The north coast is formed by sandy beaches and estuaries, the central sector consists of rocky promontories of coral origin with some sandy beaches, and in the southern Caribbean beaches protected by coral reefs predominate, being the habitat for a rich diversity of marine species.
El Litoral atlántico se caracteriza por ser recto, con una longitud de 212 km., que va desde Punta Castilla en el norte hasta el río Sixaola. La costa norte la forman playas arenosas y estuarios, el sector central está formado por promontorios rocosos de origen coralino con algunas playas arenosas, y en el Caribe Sur predominan las playas protegidas por arrecifes de coral, hábitats de una rica diversidad de especies marinas.
Costa Rican Caribbean we could split geographically into two main areas, Northern and Southern Caribbean Caribbean.
Al Caribe costarricense lo podríamos dividir geográficamente en dos grandes zonas, Caribe Norte y Caribe Sur.
The North Caribbean, from Limon to the natural border with Nicaragua, is formed by a large floodplain covered by thick jungle, with countless rivers, lagoons and canals, many of them navigable, so you can reach to destinations such as Tortuguero, Parismina and Barra del Colorado.
El Caribe Norte, desde Limón hasta la frontera natural con Nicaragua, está formado por una gran llanura de inundación cubierta por una frondosa selva, por la que discurren infinidad de ríos, lagunas y canales, muchos de ellos navegables, para que puedas llegar a destinos como Tortuguero, Parismina o Barra del Colorado.
The Southern Caribbean extends from the south of Limon to border with Panama, and contains kilometers of pristine beaches shaded by coconut trees, incredible sea bottom and mountains covered with trees. Here you can visit destinations such as Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo and Baja Talamanca, land of indigenous communities.
El Caribe Sur se extiende al sur de Limón hasta frontera con Panamá, y encierra kilómetros de playas casi vírgenes sombreadas por cocoteros, increíbles fondos marinos y montañas cubiertas de bosques. Aquí destacan destinos como Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo y la Baja Talamanca, tierra de las comunidades indígenas.

HYDROGRAPHIC BASIN

The Caribbean slope has a complex hydrographic network; its long and wide rivers descend to the Caribbean Sea with quite a volume of flow due to frequent rains, reaching across the vast plains where changes in courses are frequent, as well as the formation of meanders and canals that communicate some rivers with others.
La Vertiente del Caribe cuenta con una compleja red hidrográfica, sus largos y anchos ríos descienden hacia el mar Caribe con bastante caudal debido a las frecuentes lluvias, atravesando en su cauce inferior las extensas llanuras donde son frecuentes los cambios de cursos, la formación de meandros y canales que comunican unos ríos con otros.
Among the major rivers of the Atlantic watershed we find the San Juan River, which marks the border with Nicaragua and distributes the water to the Colorado River and receives waters of the Sarapiqui River, another one is the Tortuguero River that forms a network of canals, navigable lagoons and very picturesque flooded plains.
Entre los principales ríos de la vertiente Atlántica encontramos el río San Juan, que marca el límite con Nicaragua y reparte sus aguas al río Colorado y recibe aguas del río Sarapiquí, otro es el río Tortuguero que conforma una red de canales, lagunas navegables y llanuras inundadas muy pintorescas.
Other rivers that descend towards the northern plains are the Reventazón River that shares its waters with the Parismina, Pacuare and the Chirripo Rivers. To the south of Limon we find the Estrella and Banano Rivers that originate in the Matama row and the Sixaola River collects the water that descends from the Talamanca Valley.
Otros ríos que descienden hacia las llanuras del Norte son el río Reventazón que comparte sus aguas con el Parismina, el río Pacuare y el Chirripó. Al sur de Limón encontramos el rio Estrella y el río Banano que nacen en la Fila de Matama y el río Sixaola que recoge las aguas que descienden por el Valle de Talamanca.

The Caribbean has a typical tropical forest climate, hot and humid; with an average temperature of 26 ° C. Due to its tropical location the temperature in the Caribbean does not suffer drastic changes, while maintaining thermal stability throughout the year. El Caribe cuenta con el clima típico del bosque tropical, caluroso y húmedo, con una temperatura media de 26º C. Debido a su ubicación tropical la temperatura en el Caribe no sufre variaciones drásticas, manteniendo una estabilidad térmica a lo largo del año. Donde si presenta variaciones importantes en su temperatura es dependiendo del rango de altitud, así pues en las costas la temperatura oscila entre los 28° y 37°C., en las llanuras bajas no descienden de los 20°C. y las máximas no suelen exceder los 35°C., sin embargo en las zonas de mayor altura de la Cordillera de Talamanca las temperaturas son bajas todo el año con una media de 10°C., que pueden incluso bajar a menos de 0°C. en los meses de Noviembre y Diciembre.

cending along the eastern coast of the United States causing anticyclones over the Caribbean, with cold and moisture-laden winds that carry heavy rain to the coast and plains for up to 15 days. Other storms that last few days are called tropical waves, which are due to easterly winds that move high in the atmosphere and cause persistent rain.
o que descienden por la costa oriental de Estados Unidos provocando anticiclones sobre el Caribe, con vientos fríos y cargados de humedad que llevan mucha lluvia a las costas y llanuras durante periodos de hasta 15 días. Otros temporales que duran pocos días son las llamadas Ondas Tropicales, que se deben a vientos del Este que se mueven a gran altura en la atmósfera y provocan lluvias persistentes.
In the Caribbean there are no dry areas and also doesn´t have a dry season, although there is a notable low in precipitation during March-April and August-September, sometimes October, while in the mountains it rains all year without significant interruption.
En el Caribe no existen zonas secas y tampoco cuenta con una estación seca, aunque se presenta una baja notable en la precipitación durante Marzo-Abril y Agosto-Septiembre, a veces Octubre, mientras que en las montañas llueve todo el año sin interrupciones apreciables.
In general we can talk about a very humid Hot Equatorial climate on the plains of the Caribbean. In the high mountains very wet and rainy cold regimes are given.
En general podemos hablar de un clima Ecuatorial Muy Húmedo Caliente en las planicies del Caribe. En las montañas altas sin embargo se dan regímenes fríos muy húmedos y lluviosos.
WILD LIFE
VIDA SILVESTRE
Throughout the Caribbean region there are more than 40 protected areas by the State, due to its extraordinary biological richness and biodiversity. Different ecosystems such as tropical rain and cloudy forests, beaches, coral reefs, lagoons, mangroves and many other wetlands.
En toda la región del Caribe se encuentran mas de 40 áreas protegidas por el Estado, debido a su extraordinaria riqueza y diversidad biológica. Se protegen así diferentes ecosistemas, como bosques tropicales lluviosos y nubosos, playas, arrecifes de coral, lagunas, manglares y otros muchos humedales.
As for the flora and fauna it should be noted that this region has one of the highest concentrations of life and species on the planet. Forests, many of them primary, treasure countless plant species, a living laboratory where centennial trees such as the Caoba, Níspero, Ceibas or mountain Almonds grow.
En cuanto a flora y fauna cabe destacar que esta región presenta una de las mayores concentraciónes de vida y especies del planeta. Los bosques, muchos de ellos primarios, atesoran infinidad de especies vegetales, un laboratorio viviente donde crecen altivos árboles centenarios como el Caoba, el Níspero, Ceibas o Almendros de montaña.
These forests provide habitat and food for many mammals such as jaguars, monkeys, anteaters, coatis, jaguarondis, or giant tapirs. Also tropical birds live in it, such as toucans, parrots, oropendolas, woodpeckers or green macaws. Reptiles and amphibians, such as colorful frogs, coral snakes, boas ...
Bosques que proporcionan hábitat y alimento a numerosos mamiferos como el jaguar, monos, osos hormigueros, pízotes, jaguarundis, o la gigantesca danta. Aves tropicales como los tucanes, loros, oropéndolas, pájaros carpinteros o lapas verdes. Reptiles y anfibios, como las coloridas ranas, serpientes coral, boas… 9
Wetlands, lagoons and rivers full of life, place for the spawning of fish, home to the black river turtle, alligators, crocodiles, basilisks, otters or Grisons, prehistoric fish like gaspar, countless waterfowls and fantastic animals as manatee.
Humedales, lagunas y ríos repletos de vida, lugares de desove de peces, hogar de la tortuga negra de río, de caimanes, cocodrilos, basiliscos, nutrias o el grisón, peces prehistóricos como el gaspar, infinidad de aves acuáticas y animales fantásticos como el manatí o vaca marina.
Seas that hide the beauty and treasures of its coral reefs of spectacular forms, brainform and elkhorn, ecosystems teeming marine life, colorful fish, starfish, sea urchins, sharks and stingrays, or the unique sea turtles that year after year come to this coast to lay their eggs and begin another cycle, another new fight against extinction.
Mares que esconden la belleza y los tesoros de unos arrecifes coralinos de formas espectaculares, cerebriformes y cuernos de alce, ecosistemas repletos de fauna marina, peces de colores, estrellas de mar, erizos, tiburones y mantas rayas, o las singulares tortugas marinas que año tras años se acercan a esta costa para depositar sus huevos y comenzar así otro ciclo, otra nueva lucha contra su extinción.

JAGUAR (Panthera onca) Es el mayor de los felinos de Costa Rica, de color amarillo dorado con manchas negras circulares, alcanza 150 cm. de cuerpo y 80 cm. de cola, y pesa entre 70 y 100 kg., Habita en las selvas más grandes de la Cordillera de Talamanca, en el Parque Nacional Tortuguero y en el Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo. Se alimenta de chanchos de monte, saínos, tapires, venados y tortugas, también de monos, caimanes, peces y en ocasiones ganado.
JAGUAR (Panthera onca) It is the largest feline in Costa Rica, golden yellow colour with circular black spots, reaches 150 cm. of body and has a tail 80 cm. long. It weighs between 70 and 100 kg., It inhabits the largest forests of the Talamanca Mountain Range, in Tortuguero National Park and in Braulio Carrillo National Park. It feeds on peccaries, collared peccaries, tapirs, deer and turtles, as well as on monkeys, alligators, fish and sometimes cattle.
LAPA VERDE (Ara ambigua) Tiene un plumaje verde amarillento, rojo en la frente y en las plumas centrales y azul verdoso en las alas y la cola, su pico es negro. Se alimenta de frutos de varios árboles, principalmente del Almendro de Montaña donde también anida. En el Caribe se la encuentra en la Zona Norte en el dosel de los bosques, y ahora hay un programa de reintroducción en el Caribe Sur.
GREEN MACAW (Ara ambigua) It has a yellowish green plumage, red on the forehead and central feathers and green and blue feathers on the wings and tail, its beak is black. It feeds on fruits of several trees, mainly Mountain Almond where it also nests. In the Caribbean it is found on its North Zone in the canopy of forests. Hay más de 1.300 especies, la mayoría son epifitas. Se distinguen por la complejidad de sus flores, que varían desde menos de 1 mm. hasta los 15 o 20 cm, y sus llamativos colores. Florecen una sola vez al año y pueden permanecer abiertas desde un día hasta más de tres meses. Sus tallos engrosados sirven para almacenar agua y sus raíces aéreas se encargan de captar los nutrientes. Atraen gran variedad de insectos, pájaros y murciélagos.
There are more than 1,300 species, and most of them are epiphytes. They are distinguished by the complexity of their flowers, ranging from less than 1 mm. to 15 or 20 cm, and because of its striking colors. They bloom only once a year and can remain open from one day to more than three months. It´s thickened stems are used to store water and its aerial roots are responsible for capturing nutrients. They attract a great variety of insects, birds and bats.

GREEN IGUANA (Iguana iguana) It is one of the most representative and emblematic reptiles of the Caribbean and it can measure up to 60 cm. without tail. It inhabits the tropical rainforests up to a height of 500 meters, it is oviparous and very territorial. In the Southern Caribbean there are breeding and reintroduction projects. 13

Mide de 5 cm. el macho y 7.6 cm. la hembra, de hábitos nocturnos, arborícola y carnívora.

Known as the red eye frog. Noted for its large, bright eyes with red iris, vertical pupil and reticulated inside eyelid. In its body it has many colours, such as lime green, blue, purple, yellow, orange and red. The male measures 5 cm. long and the female 7.6 cm. They are of nocturnal habits, arboreal and carnivorous.

Las Bromeliáceas se caracterizan por tener las hojas alineadas en espiral formando una roseta en la base que almacena agua de lluvia en su cavidad central y son utilizadas por muchos animales como hábitat y lugar de reproducción. Las hojas son serradas, cóncavas y puntiagudas, cubiertas por una especie de escamas en su superficie que recogen agua y minerales, las raíces solamente sirven para anclaje. Las inflorescencias son en ramillete o espiga, y las flores son polinizadas por insectos, pájaros y murciélagos.
The Bromeliads are characterized by having the leaves aligned in a spiral form, forming a basal rosette that stores rainwater in its central cavity and they are used by many animals as their habitat and breeding ground. The leaves are serrated, concave and pointed, covered by a kind of scales on its surface that collects water and minerals, the roots only serve as an anchor. The inflorescences grow in a bouquet or sprig, and the flowers are pollinated by insects, birds and bats.
TAPIR (Tapirus bairdii) Hay una especie de tapir o danta en Costa Rica, el Tapir Norteño, el mayor de los mamíferos silvestres del país, que alcanza hasta 220 cm. de largo, 1 metro de alzada y más de 300 kg. de peso. Son relativamente abundantes, especialmente en el Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo.

Son las más pequeñas de todas las aves, con más de 50 especies, algunas de ellas menores a 8 cm., que exhiben brillantes colores y un verde iridiscente, por lo general metálico. Su pico y lengua son muy largos para succionar el néctar y los pequeños insectos de los que se alimentan. Son conocidos por su rápido vuelo y su potente aleteo, pueden mover las alas hasta 70 veces por segundo. Pueden visitar entre 500 y 3.000 flores en un día y son las únicas aves capaces de volar hacia atrás.
They are the smallest of all birds, with more than 50 species, some of them of less than 8 cm long and they exhibit bright colours and an iridescent green, usually metallic. Its beak and tongue are very long so as to suck the nectar and small insects on which they feed on. They are known for their fast flight and powerful flapping, they can move the wings up to 70 times per second. They can visit between 500 and 3,000 flowers in a day and are the only birds that can fly backwards.
PELÍCANO (Pelecanus occidentales) Es un ave marina conocida por la enorme bolsa que tiene bajo su largo pico que usa como una red de pescar. De 1 m. de longitud y unos 3 kg. de peso, vive en aguas costeras, se refugia en rocas y árboles, anida en colonias y se agrupa en bandadas de 20 o más individuos que vuelan coordinadamente en fila.
PELICAN (Pelecanus occidentales) It is a seabird known for the huge bag they have under its long beak which is used as fishing net. It is 1meter long and about 3 kg weight, lives in coastal waters, takes refuge in rocks and trees, nests in colonies and is grouped in flocks of 20 or more individuals that fly coordinated in a row.
OROPEL (Bothriechis schlegelii) En la família de las Tobobas venenosas hay 13 especies, entre ellas destacan la Matabuey (Lachesis stenophrys), la Terciopelo (Bothrops asper), la Lora (Bothriechis lateralis) y la Oropel (en la foto), cuyo veneno produce destrucción de tejidos y problemas con la coagulación de la sangre.

Formados por el esqueleto calcáreo que producen unas colonias de diminutos animales llamados Pólipos, que cuentan con unas 2.500 especies, son invertebrados, con el cuerpo tubular y se alimentan de plancton. Forman un exoesqueleto de carbonato cálcico en forma de cáliz a su alrededor que los protege y los fija al sustrato, formando la plataforma base sobre la que más pólipos depositan más cálcio que la hará crecer verticalmente hacia la superficie.

MAPACHE (Procyon lotor) Hay varias especies en Costa Rica, muy común es el Mapache Norteño (en la foto), de color gris plateado, más oscuros en el centro del lomo, con cola larga y anillada, la nariz en punta y una mancha negra de las mejillas a los ojos a modo de antifaz. Es de hábitos nocturnos y en su dieta están los cangrejos y los frutos.
RACCOON (Procyon lotor) There are several species in Costa Rica. A very common one is the Northern Raccoon (pictured), silvery gray coloured, with darker tones in the center of the back, with a long, ringed tail, pointed nose and a black spot from the cheeks to the eyes forming a mask. It is of nocturnal habits and eats crabs and fruits. 15
MARGAY (Leopardus wiedii) Known as Caucel, it has a body colour between brown and gray with open black spots, the snout is short, has big eyes and its tail is very long. It has nocturnal habits and feeds on birds, monkeys, lizards and rodents.

Son los mamíferos más abundantes, con 116 especies, la mayoría de costumbres nocturnas, arborícolas y frugívoros, como el Murciélago de la Fruta o el Murciélago de Salvin. Hay 3 especies de murciélagos vampiros, el Vampiro Común, el de Patas Velludas y el de Alas Blancas. Una de las especies más singular y fácil de ver es el Murciélago Pescador, el cual se alimenta de peces y es uno de los más grandes.

There are 3 species of vampire bats, the Common Vampire, Hairy-legged vampire and the Whitewinged vampire. ESPÁTULA ROSADA (Ajaia ajaja) Vive en hábitats de agua dulce y salada de poca profundidad, como esteros y lagunas, especialmente en el Caribe Norte. Mide 81 cm. y pesa 1.4 kg., la cabeza y pico en forma de espátula son verduzcos, el cuello y cuerpo entre blanco y rosado pálido, las alas rosado fuerte con toques color rojo ladrillo y las patas rojizas. Se alimenta sumergiendo el pico o la cabeza en el agua.
ROSEATE SPOONBILL (Ajaia ajaja) They live in freshwater and salty shallow water habitats, such as estuaries and lagoons, mainly in the northern Caribbean. It measures 81 cm. and weighs 1.4 kg. Its head and spatula shaped beak are greenish, the neck and body is white to pale pink, the wings are bright pink with a touch of brick red and its legs are reddish. It feeds by dipping its beak or head into the water

Son invertebrados terrestres y marinos, de cuerpo blando, dividido en cabeza, masa visceral y pie muscular, de forma oval y simetría bilateral, protegidos por una concha o sin ella. Incluyen a las almejas, calamares, pulpos, babosas y caracoles. Cabe destacar los moluscos marinos de los arrecifes de Cahuita y Manzanillo, donde se han encontrado 472 especies, 30 de ellas nuevas para la ciencia, esto supone el 10% de las especies presentes en América, aunque se cree que podrían haber muchas más.

TORTUGA VERDE (Chelonia mydas) La Tortuga Verde es la más abundante de las 5 especies de tortugas marinas que hay en Costa Rica. Llega a medir 1.5 mts. y desova entre los meses de Julio a Octubre en todo el litoral caribeño, especialmente en el Parque Nacional Tortuguero. Las otras especies son la Baula, la Carey, la Lora y la Caguama.

Uno de los más comunes es la Guatusa (Dasyprocta punctata), de color marrón y de unos 50 cm. de largo, habita en bosques hasta los 1.800 msnm. y se alimenta de frutos. El Tepezcuintle (Agouti paca) (en la foto) es un poco mayor que la anterior, hasta 70 cm. de largo.

They belong to the Dendrobates family and have glands in the skin that release venomous substances,they are most active during the night and live in the humid rainforest of the Caribbean.

They are common in the lowlands and middle elevations of the Caribbean. There are 3 species, the NorthernTamandua (Tamandua mexicana) (pictured) which is the most common one, of black-yellow colour with a prehensile tail, the Giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), of large size, and the Pygmy anteater (Cyclopes didactylus) inhabits the lowlands of the country. The diet is based on ants and termites.

Pertenecientes a la familia Malvaceae, los hibiscus pueden ser desde arbustos a árboles de pequeño porte, con hojas alternas, simples, ovaladas o lanceoladas, con borde serrado o lobulado. Las flores son largas, con forma de trompeta, con cinco pétalos, de tonos blancos a rosas, rojos, morados o amarillos.
PECARIES
PECCARIES
Hay dos especies de pecaríes, el Saíno (Tayassu tajacu) (en la foto) que se caracteriza por tener una banda de pelo blanco en torno al cuello y un tamaño que llega a los 90 cm., es un animal que vive en grupos de 2 a 20 individuos. El Chancho de Monte (Tayassu pecari) excede el metro de largo y alcanza hasta 60 cm. de altura, es diurno y vive en grupos de hasta 300 individuos. Habita solo en selvas umbrófilas y en el Parque Nacional Tortuguero.
There are two species of peccaries, the Collared Peccarie (Tayassu tajacu) (pictured) which is characterized for having white hair around its neck and a size that reaches 90 cm long. It is an animal that lives in groups 2 to 20 individuals. The White-lipped Peccary (Tayassu peccary) measures more than 1 meter long and reaches up to 60 cm. height, it has diurnal habits and lives in groups of up to 300 individuals. It lives only in umbrófilas forests and Tortuguero National Park.

DELFINES
In the Caribbean three species of dolphins live, the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin (Stenella attenuata), of 2 to 2.5 meters long, with small white spots on the back. It is grouped in pods and they are very good swimmers. The Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the largest one, have long and strong body. They live in pods of 10 to 25 individuals. The Tucuxi Dolphin (Sotalia fluviatilis), native of the Amazon, is the world’s smallest on, weighing 35 to 40 kg. They love to do acrobatics and jumps, they are loners though you see them in groups of 2 or 3 individuals.
En el Caribe viven tres especies de delfines, el Delfín Manchado del Atlántico (Stenella attenuata), de 2 a 2.5 mts. de longitud, con pequeñas manchas blancas en la espalda. Se agrupa en manadas y es muy buen nadador. El Delfín Nariz de Botella (Tursiops truncatus), el mas grande, de cuerpo largo y robusto. Vive en grupos de entre 10 y 25 individuos. El Delfin Tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis), originario del Amazonas, es el más pequeño del mundo, pesa 35 a 40 kg. Muy dado a las acrobacias y saltos, es solitario aunque se le ve en grupos de 2 o 3 individuos.

Butterflies and moths, Lepidoptera, are of day or night habits. They pass through four stages throughout their life. Females lay their eggs on plants where they hatch in a week giving birth to a caterpillar who spends its time eating and growing for 2 or 3 weeks, after which it fixes on a support where the metamorphosis into a chrysalis occurs, giving birth to an adult butterfly in 1 to 2 weeks and that will have a life that will be of not more than 20 days.
Las Mariposas y polillas, Lepidópteros, son diurnas o nocturnas. Pasan por cuatro etapas a lo largo de su vida, las hembras ponen sus huevos en plantas donde eclosionan en una semana emergiendo una oruga que pasa su tiempo comiendo y creciendo durante 2 o 3 semanas, al cabo de las cuales se fija a un soporte donde se produce la metamorfosis en crisálida, de ella emergerá una mariposa adulta en 1 o 2 semanas y comenzará su vida que no excederá de 20 días. 18

The architecture reproduces the universe created by Siso. The cosmic house and buildings are made from natural materials, such as peach palm wood, suita palm for roofs and ties made from fibers. The most important celebrations are the Chichadas, where neighbours gather around to help someone build his house, for example, and drink corn chicha, dance the Sorbon, a dance in which they hug forming a large circle that moves at the rhythm marked by the sole of the foot, symbol of solidarity and bond with the land.

DIVING AND SNORKELLING The curious and lovers of the sea bottom must feel lucky, because the coral reef in the Caribbean Sea is one of the most significant ecosystems in the world having a great diversity of flora and fauna. For snorkeling you just have to rent a pair of goggles to explore the reefs that are closer to the shore, which can be found in almost all the beaches of the Southern Caribbean, the most interesting are those of Cahuita National Park, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo. You can organize a boat trip so as to enjoy these amazing ecosystems, especially in the Cahuita National Park, because it is a protected area where you will be able to see more corals and animals, and also because you can only access it by boat and with a guide. To practice scuba diving you can get in contact with some of the professional diving agencies of the Southern Caribbean.

Los curiosos y amantes del fondo marino están de enhorabuena, debido a que el arrecife coralino en el Mar Caribe es uno de los ecosistemas mas significativos y cuenta con una gran diversidad de flora y fauna marina.
Para la práctica del snorkel solo tienes que alquilarte unas gafas de bucear para explorar los arrecifes mas cercanos a la costa. Estos se encuentran en casi todas las playas del Caribe Sur, los mas interesantes son los del Parque Nacional de Cahuita, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva o Manzanillo. Puedes organizar una salida en bote para disfrutar de estos increíbles ecosistemas, especialmente en el Parque Nacional Cahuita que al estar protegido es donde mas corales y animales podrás ver y al que solo podras acceder en bote y acompañado de un guia. Para la practica de buceo con tanque contacta en con alguna de las agencias profesionales de buceo que hay en el Caribe Sur.

Los ríos son los protagonistas en el Caribe Norte, el escenario perfecto para navegar por sus innumerables ríos, canales y lagunas por los que vivir una experiencia inolvidable. En todos los destinos del Caribe Norte podrás contratar una lancha para internarte en el bosque y disfrutar de la vida silvestre. Buenos lugares para esta experiencia son los ríos y canales cercanos al pueblo de Tortuguero y los canales que parten de Moín, en Limón. Al sur de Limón podrás navegar en ríos como Caño Negro, Río La Estrella, o mas al sur la Laguna de Gandoca. También en el Valle de Talamanca podrás pasear en bote por alguno de los ríos que recorren las reservas indígenas.
KAYAK
El Kayak es otra opción para explorar los ríos, puedes bajar los rápidos de aguas blancas del Pacuare, explorar los calmados ríos y canales de la zona Norte como en Tortuguero o del Caribe Sur como en Punta Uva o en la laguna de Gandoca. También podrás practicar kayak en el mar, en Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva y Manzanillo.

El Caribe cuenta con los mejores ríos para la practica de este deporte, el Pacuare y el Reventazón, reconocidos internacionalmente, ambos llegan a alcanzar una clase III y IV en algunos de sus tramos, con lo que las altas dosis de adrenalina están aseguradas.
La experiencia no es necesaria, solo se requiere valor y un corazón a prueba de infartos para sentir la emoción del descenso, a través de impactantes paisaje. A tu disposición hay tours todo incluido con varias compañías, transporte, equipo, entrenamiento y comidas, incluso descensos de varios días. Estos puedes contratarlos desde San José o desde el Caribe Sur.
PESCA
Para la pesca artesanal y deportiva el Caribe cuenta con muy buenos destinos. Parismina, Tortuguero y en especial Barra del Colorado son reconocidos internacionalmente tanto para la pesca en río como en el mar. También en Moín, Limón, y en el Caribe Sur podrás contratar un estimulante día de pesca.

Si eres amante del Surf, las olas del Caribe te están llamando, Puerto Viejo cuenta con la conocida Salsa Brava, una ola de estilo Hawaiano, que se forma en aguas profundas y rompe a derecha y a izquierda sobre un afilado arrecife, una de las olas mas fuerte de Costa Rica, solo para expertos, habla con los surfistas locales y que te aconsenjen.

Otras opciones en el Caribe Sur para los que no son tan profesionales, son Playa Blanca en Cahuita, Playa Negra en Puerto Viejo, el conocido y popular Beach Break en Cocles y algunos otros puntos hasta llegar a Manzanillo. También en Limón destacan lugares como Playa Bonita e Isla Uvita, a la cual hay que llegar en lancha.
In the North Caribbean the rivers are the protagonists, a perfect scenery for navigating countless waterways, canals and lagoons enjoying of an unforgettable experience. In all Northern Caribbean destinations you can hire a boat to deepen into the forest and enjoy of its wildlife. The rivers and near the village of Tortuguero and canals that start from Moin in Limon are great places for living this experience.
KAYAKING
Kayaking is another option to explore the rivers, you can experience the whitewater rapids of the Pacuare River, explore the calm rivers and canals on the north of Tortuguero area or the Southern Caribbean in Punta Uva or Gandoca lagoon. You can also go sea kayaking in Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva and Manzanillo.

To the south of Limon you can navigate rivers and Caño Negro, Rio La Estrella, or further south the Gandoca Lagoon. Also in the Talamanca Valley you can take a boat trip on one of the rivers that cross the Indian reservations.
RAFTING
The Caribbean has the best rivers to practice this sport, the Pacuare and Reventazón, internationally recognized, both can reach class III and IV in some sections, so that high doses of adrenaline are guaranteed.
Experience is not necessary; all you need is courage and a strong heart to feel the rush of this descent, through stunning sceneries. There are all-inclusive tours with several companies, which include transportation, equipment, training and meals, and you can also hire a descent of several days. You can hire them from San Jose or from the Southern Caribbean. The Caribbean has very good sport fishing destinations. Parismina, Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado in particular are internationally recognized for both river and sea fishing. Also in Moin, Limon, and South Caribbean you can hire a boat for a stimulating day of fishing.

Other surf options in the Southern Caribbean for not professional surfers are Playa Blanca in Cahuita, Playa Negra in Puerto Viejo, the well known and popular Beach Break in Cocles and some other points on your way to Manzanillo. In Limon you also have surf spots such as Playa Bonita and Isla Uvita, which is accessible by boat.
HIKING
There is nothing better than a walk to get to know the forest and its secrets, which we recommend doing at least once in your visit to these lands. There is much to learn in the forest.

If you are a surf lover, the Caribbean waves are awaiting for you. Puerto Viejo has the famous Salsa Brava, a Hawaiian style wave, formed in deep water and breaks left and right on a sharp reef, one of the strongest waves of Costa Rica, only for experts, talk with local surfers so they inform you.

Nada mejor que una caminata para conocer el bosque y sus secretos, algo que te recomendamos hacer al menos una vez en tu paso por estas tierras. En el bosque hay mucho que aprender. En todos los destinos turísticos del Caribe existen senderos que se internan en la selva y guías y compañías de aventura que te ayudarán a que ese paseo sea algo especial, si te interesa la fauna, la flora, las plantas medicinales o eres amante de las aves.

Subirse a los lomos de un caballo siempre es el comienzo de una gran aventura, ya seas un principiante o un jinete experimentado. Podrás internarte en la jungla, recorrer el cauce de un río misterioso o trotar por una idílica playa. Busca esta aventura en Cahuita, Puerto Viejo o Manzanillo.
CANOPY
Si quieres tener emociones fuertes, atrévete y súbete a los árboles mas altos de la selva tropical, lánzate de una plataforma a otra, a mas de 40 metros de altura, deslizándote por los cables a gran velocidad y vuela. Hay canopys en Puerto Viejo y Tortuguero.
RESERVAS INDÍGENAS
Talamanca es la tierra de los ancestrales pueblos indígenas, especialmente de las etnias bribri y cabecar cuya cultura, creencia, tradiciones, lengua y arquitectura se han conservado casi intactas a lo largo se los siglos.

Algunas de estas comunidades realizan proyectos con el fin de atraer visitantes en el marco de un respeto hacia la naturaleza y a las culturas. A 3,5 km. de Bribri se encuentra la comunidad de Uatsi donde podrás compartir con estas culturas milenarias y disfrutar de las bellezas naturales de la zona.
Los mas atrevidos podrán internarse en la misteriosa cordillera de Talamanca para alcanzar comunidades remotas como la de Yorkin, cuyo acceso se realiza en cayuco remontando el rio del mismo nombre. Allí brindan servicio de hospedaje, alimentación y tours en la zona, podrás convivir con ellos y conocer su estilo de vida, sus costumbres y sus leyendas, que te relatarán por las noches mientras que los artesanos te muestran como elaboran sus piezas con los materiales que extraen de la selva.

INDIGENOUS RESERVATIONS
Talamanca is the ancestral land of indigenous peoples, especially the Bribri and Cabecar whose culture, beliefs, traditions, language and ethnic architecture has been preserved almost intact over the centuries.
The more adventurous can penetrate into the mysterious Talamanca Mountain Range to reach remote communities such as Yorkin, whose access is by canoe going up the Yorkin River. There they offer lodging, food and tours in the area. You will live with them and know their lifestyle, customs and legends, that are told at night while artisans show you how they produce crafts with materials extracted from the forest.

Cahuita cuenta con uno de los Parques Nacionales mas bellos del país, que encierra una biodiversidad de valor incalculable, por eso Cahuita se convirtió hace tiempo en un importante destino turístico y cuenta con la infraestructura necesaria para que disfrutes de este privilegiado enclave natural.
Cahuita has one of the most beautiful national parks in the country, which encloses an extremely valuable biodiversity, reason why Cahuita became a long time ago an important tourist destination, and has the necessary infrastructure for the enjoyment of this privileged natural enclave.
En estas costas abundaban las tortugas marinas, por eso en la temporada de desove acudian aquí numerosos pescadores de Nicaragua y Panamá. Uno de ellos, William Smith, de origen afrocaribeño, fue el primero en instalarse definitivamente aquí en el año 1.828, así se convirtió en el primer habitante del Caribe Sur.
There are plenty of marine turtles in these coasts, reason why many fishermen from Nicaragua and Panama used to come here on the egg laying season. One of them, William Smith, of Afro-Caribbean origin, was the first one to settle down here, on 1.828, this way he became the first South Caribbean inhabitant.
The name Cahuita comes from the first Misquito indigenous people that arrived to this coast from Nicaragua, and on their native tongue means: place where the “sangrillos” grow, due to the abundance of this yellow flower tree in this area.
Cahuita debe su nombre a los primeros indios Misquitos que llegaron a esta costa provenientes de Nicaragua y en cuya lengua significa ¨lugar donde crecen los sangrillos¨, debido a la abundancia de este árbol de flores amarillas que hay en la zona.
William Smith was followed by other fishermen, and at the end of the XIX century many Jamaican people arrived after the railway building was over, developing an Afro-Caribbean culture in harmony with nature.

Hoy el pueblo de Cahuita mantiene su identidad personal, calles amplias, típicas construcciones de estilo caribeño de múltiples colores hechas en madera y levantadas sobre pilares, el olor a coco y a curry cocinándose al lento ritmo del Calypso y del Reggae, máxima expresión musical de este pueblo caribeño.
Nowadays, Cahuita’s Town keeps its personal identity, wide roads, typical Caribbean style colorful buildings, wooden houses, lifted over pillars. You can sense the smell of coconut and curry cooking at the slow rhythm of Calypso and Reggae music, this town’s main musical expression.

El Parque Nacional de Cahuita es sin duda un lugar que te va a sorprender, no solo por su belleza sino por la abundante vida silvestre que encontrarás si te aventuras a visitarlo.
Without a doubt, Cahuita National Park is an amazing place, not only because of its beauty, but also for the abundant wild nature that you will find, if you dare to visit it.
El parque cuenta con un sendero bien señalizado de 7 kilómetros que discurre junto a la costa, entre el pueblo de Cahuita y el sector de Puerto Vargas. Es buena idea recorrerlo en su totalidad para que no te pierdas ni un detalle. Hay autobuses que unen los dos sectores por la carretera por si quieres entrar por un sector y salir por el otro. En ambas entradas existen casetas de información y en Puerto Vargas se encuentra la administracción del parque.
The park has a 7 kilometers well signed path that goes along the coast, between Cahuita’s Town and Puerto Vargas area. It is a good idea to walk all around this park if you don’t want to miss a thing. If you want to go in through one entrance and go out through the other, there are buses that join these 2 sectors. There are Information Centers in both entrances, and the park’s administration is located in Puerto Vargas.
La riqueza animal y vegetal del parque es abrumadora, agudiza tus sentidos pues facilmente podrás ver monos, pizotes, numerosas aves y una frondosa vegetacion que parece ganarle terreno al mar. Las playas son lo mas parecido al Paraíso, arenas claras y un mar turquesa que te cautivará. Las mejores para el baño son Playa Blanca y Playa Puerto Vargas, ambas galardonadas con la Bandera Azul Ecológica.
The park’s animal and vegetal richness is overwhelming; try to intensify your senses, since you can easily watch monkeys, “pizotes,” many birds and abundant vegetation, as if it penetrates the sea. The beaches look like paradise, white-sanded and a captivating turquoise sea. Playa Blanca and Playa Puerto Vargas (Puerto Vargas Beach) are the best options for bathing, both awarded with the Ecological Blue Flag.
El arrecife coralino es el ecosistema mas representativo del parque, que se extiende en forma de abanico frente a Punta Cahuita. Aquí se han identificado 35 especies de coral, 128 de algas, 140 de moluscos y 123 de peces de llamativos colores. Explorar el arrecife con unas gafas de bucear es algo que no te puedes perder, mejor si vas en lancha con un guia que conozca bien los puntos mas interesantes para bucear.
The coral reef is the park’s most representative ecosystem, which extends in front of Punta Cahuita shaped like a fan. The following different species have been identified here: 35 corals, 128 seaweeds, 140 mollusks, and 123 flashy color fish. Exploring the reef with diving glasses is an experience that you cannot miss. You better go on a boat with a guide that knows well the most interesting diving spots.

Before getting to Puerto Viejo town, we find the lonely Playa Negra (Black Beach), a peculiar black-sanded beach that spreads out to the north, all the way to Puerto Vargas.

Mas al sur, a 6 kilómetros, está Playa Chiquita, un buen punto para practicar snorkel en el arrecife coralino y el lugar ideal para sentir que estás solo en tu soñada playa.
Farther south is Playa Chiquita (Chiquita Beach), 6 kilometers of Cocles, a good spot to practice snorkeling around the coral reef, and the perfect place to feel alone in your dream beach.
Playa Grande, mas al sur, se extiende desde Punta Uva hasta Manzanillo y es una de las mas solitarias y tranquilas de la zona, rodeada de cocoteros que se alzan hasta el cielo. Kilómetros de playa donde perderte y ser parte de una naturaleza llena de vida.

PLAYA COCLES La Comunidad de Cocles comienza 1,5 km. al sur de Puerto Viejo y su playa de arena dorada se extiende por más de 3 km., bordeada por esbeltos cocoteros y con senderos paralelos a la playa donde se pueden ver árboles gigantes, uvas de playa, arbustos, filodendros, platanillas, heliotropos y epifitas, aves exóticas como colibríes, kiskedees y tangaras en busca de polen, perezosos dormidos boca abajo sobre un árbol de guarumo o escurridizas lagartijas y cangrejos tratando de no dejarse ver.
The Community of Cocles begins 1.5 kms south of Puerto Viejo with its golden beach spreading for more than 3 kms. It is bordered by elegant coconut trees and trails parallel to the beach where giant trees, sea grapes, bushes, philodendrons, plantains, heliotropes and epiphites are beheld as well as hummingbirds, kiskadee and tanagers searching for polen, sloths sleeping on their tummies in a guarumo tree or slippery lizards and crabs escaping from sight.
Su zona costera y marítima está protegida por el Refugio de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo, aquí desembocan el río Cocles y el río Negro dando lugar a un importante humedal, hábitat de numerosas especies como el caimán, la nutria, aves acuáticas como garzas, el martín pescador o el gavilán cangrejero.
The coastal and sea area are protected under the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, where you find the mouths of the Cocles and Negro Rivers leading to an important wetland habitat for numerous species such as alligators, otters, waterfowls such as herons, kingfsihers or common black hawks.
Otros senderos y caminos se internan en la montaña al corazón del Bosque Tropical Húmedo y a la Reserva Indígena Kekoldi a través de colinas cubiertas de densa vegetación.
Other trails and walks head into the mountain into the heart of the Humid Tropical Forest and into the Kekoldi Indian Reservation, through hills covered in dense vegetation.
La playa es la gran protagonista en Cocles, por ser la mas cercana a Puerto Viejo es muy popular y animada, especialmente por ser un excelente lugar para practicar surf y booggie board, tanto para expertos como para principiantes, en el punto conocido como Beach Break. Frente a este lugar hay una pequeña isla rocosa que sirve como refugio a numerosas aves que al atardecer se dirigen allí a pernoctar, y donde según cuentan las leyendas se enterró un tesoro pirata.
The main star in Cocles is the beach, as it is the nearest to Puerto Viejo, popular and happy, especially as it is an excellent surfing and booggie board spot, for experts or amateurs, in the well-known point of Beach Break. In front of this point there is a small rocky island, a refuge for many birds that fly back to roost in the evenings, and where, according to legend, a pirate treasure lies hidden. 41

PLAYA CHIQUITA Y PUNTA UVA
Estas playas, galardonadas con la Bandera Azul Ecológica, se encuentran entre las más bellas del Caribe y de todo Costa Rica, con arenas blancas o doradas y aguas turquesas que esconden delicados arrecifes coralinos llenos de vida.
Both these beaches have been awarded the Ecological Blue Flag. They are amongst the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and all of Costa Rica, with their white or golden sands, turquoise water hiding delicate coral reefs teeming with life.
Playa Chiquita está formada por una sucesión de pequeñas playas rodeadas de placas de coral que emergieron como efecto del terremoto en el año 1.991, formando pozas de especial belleza.
Playa Chiquita is formed by a string of small beaches, surrounded by corals plaques that emerged from the sea due to the 1991 earthquake, thus forming pools of unique beauty.
Estas playas, a menudo solitarias, son excelentes para caminar por sus finas arenas, broncearse bajo el sol, refrescarse con largos baños en sus orillas, sumergirse en el sorprendente mundo submarino o practicar deportes de playa.
These sometimes solitary beaches are excellent for walks due to their fine sands, as well as sunbathing, enjoying long refreshing swims, watching the surprising underwater world, or exercising beach sports.
Punta Uva consta de dos playas separadas por un saliente rocoso al que se puede subir por un sendero que lleva hasta la punta del mismo con una vista panorámica sobre la costa. Al lado Sur de esta roca se encuentra la playa conocida como Arrecife y la punta, detrás de la cual está playa Grande que llega hasta Manzanillo.
Punta Uva is made up of two beaches sepparated by a rocky point which can be climbed on a trail that takes you to the topmost point, with a panoramic view of the coast. On the southern side of this rock is a beach known as Arrecife and the point, behind of which lies Playa Grande, spreading into Manzanillo.
A espaldas de estas playas se encuentra el bosque tropical, en algunos sectores primario, perfecto para practicar senderismo, observación de aves o para la práctica de yoga y otras técnicas de relajación en contacto con la Naturaleza.

MANZANILLO - GANDOCA Manzanillo esta situado a 15 kilómetros de Puerto Viejo y es el pueblo mas tranquilo y relajado del Caribe Sur. Es un caso ejemplar de aldea caribeña, situada frente al mar, con una población en su mayoría afrocaribeña, amable y cordial, que vive a un ritmo pausado, al ritmo del entorno donde viven.
Manzanillo is located 15 kilometers of Puerto Viejo, and it is the most calmed and relaxed town in the South Caribbean. It is a Caribbean village model, located in front of the sea, with a majority afro Caribbean population, kind and hearty people, living slowly, like the rhythm of their surroundings.
El Refugio cuenta con caminos y senderos, algunos que bordean la costa entre sus numerosas playas y otros que se internan en la selva y que cruzan el refúgio hasta el otro extremo, Punta Mona y Gandoca, donde la naturaleza es aún mas salvaje.
The Refuge has paths and trails, some which go along the coast, among its numerous beaches, and some others that go into the forest and cross the Refuge to the other end, Punta Mona and Gandoca, where nature is even wilder.
This spot was protected by the State in 1.985, as the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wild Life Refuge, protecting more than 5.000 terrestrial hectares and 4.000 marine hectares. They are primary forest landscapes and idyllic beaches that make you feel in Paradise.
Un entorno que fué. protegido en 1.985 por el Estado, como Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo, protegiendo mas de 5.000 hectáreas terrestres y 4.000 marinas. Son paisajes de bosques primarios e idílicas playas que te hacen senrtir en el Edén.
The Gandoca lagoon has an extraordinary mangrove swamp, where numerous species of snails, crustaceans, and mollusks coexist. A reproduction spot for fish and a food store for otters, alligators, and aquatic birds.
La Laguna de Gandoca cuenta con un extraordinario manglar donde coexisten numerosas especies de caracoles, crustáceos y moluscos, lugar de reproducción de peces y almacén de alimento para nutrias, caimanes y aves acuáticas.
Amazing Cativo (Sandbox tree) woodland, majestic trees, and the Leatherback turtle spawning, between March and July, are the other jewels of this treasure. It is incredible to watch this marine turtle (in danger of extinction) laying its eggs. There is a program focused on its study and conservation.
Un impresionante bosque de Cativos, árbol majestuoso, y el desove de la tortuga Baula, entre Marzo y Julio, son las otras joyas que contiene este tesoro. Observar el desove de esta tortuga marina, que está al borde de la extinción, es algo increible. Existe un programa para su estudio y conservación.
You will be able to have relaxing beach walks, to take a kayak or boat trip, to fish, dive, and sunbathe, to penetrate the forest or to ride a horse.
Podrás darte tranquilos paseos por la playa, pasear en bote o en kayak, pescar, bucear, tomar el sol, o internarte al bosque o pasear a caballo.

TORTUGUERO
Tortuguero es una pequeña aldea situada entre el mar Caribe y las aguas del Río Tortuguero, a unos 80 kilómetros al norte de Limón, en el corazón del Caribe Norte, las tierras con mayor biodiversidad de Costa Rica.
Tortuguero is a small village, located between the Caribbean sea and the Tortuguero River, about 80 kilometers north of Limon, in the heart of the North Caribbean, the lands with the highest biodiversity in Costa Rica.
El Caribe Norte es una gran llanura de inundación conformada por diferentes ecosistemas, que son el hábitat perfecto para infinidad de mamíferos, mas de 450 especies de aves, reptiles, anfíbios e insectos. También es lugar de visita anual de miles de aves migratorias y refugio de diversas especies en vias de extinción, como el jaguar, las tortugas marinas, la lapa verde o el manatí.
The North Caribbean is a huge flooded plain, shaped by different ecosystems that are the perfect habitat for countless mammals, more than 450 birds, reptiles, amphibious, and insects species. It is also an annual visiting spot for thousands of migratory birds and a refugee for different in danger of extinction species, such as the jaguar, the marine turtles, the green limpet, or the manatee.
There are not roads on the way to Tortuguero and other destinations in the North Caribbean, you can get there by boat, across complex rivers, lagoons, and channels network, twisting and turning among abundant vegetation walls that will turn your trip into an adventure, due to the incredible landscapes and the abundant animals that you will see.
Para llegar hasta Tortuguero no existen carreteras, el viaje se realiza navegando a través de una compleja red de ríos, lagunas y canales que serpentean entre paredes de densa vegetación, que harán de ese desprazamiento una aventura, por los increibles paisajes y los muchos animales que verás.
Tortuguero National Park protects more than 18.000 terrestrial and 52.000 marine hectares. It is located between rain forests and flooded lands, covering various river basins and mouths.
El Parque Nacional Tortuguero proteje mas de 18.000 hectareas terrestres y 52.000 marinas, y está ubicado entre selvas lluviosas y tierras inundadas, que abarcan la cuenca y desembocadura de rios como el Pacuare, Reventazón, Parismina, Tortuguero y La Suerte. Caño Harold, Caño Palma o el Río Tortuguero estan muy cerca del pueblo y son perfectos para internarte en compañía de un guía naturalista que te revelará algunos secretos del bosque, o bien aventúrate por ti mismo en kayak o canoa. Esta es una buena oportunidad para ver animales, caimanes, tortugas, monos y numerosas aves acuáticas como el martín pescador, la garza tigre o la espátula rosada.
The closets rivers to Tortuguero town are Caño Harold (Harold Drain), Caño Palma (Palma Drain), or the Tortuguero River. They are perfect for guided boat trips, which will reveal some of the forest’s secrets, or you can also dare to take a kayak or canoe trip by yourself. This is a good chance to see animals, alligators, turtles, monkeys, and countless aquatic birds, such as the kingfisher, the tiger heron, or the pink spoonbill.

Tortuguero is, without a doubt one of Costa Rica’s most amazing destinations, a world dominated by water, where life begins. This is the perfect scenery to be in harmony with nature and to feel that you belong here.
The marine turtle is Tortuguero’s main character. The famous arriving of the Green Turtle (Chelonia midas) is a natural phenomenon that happens every year (between July and October) when they come to lay their eggs. You can see this event at night and at the beach, accompanied with an official guide.

Limón es la capital del Caribe y cuenta con todo el colorido y el sabor de una ciudad caribeña, su puerto comercial es el mas importante del país y es además destino de numerosos cruceros en sus rutas turísticas.
Limon is the Caribbean capital, and has all the color and flavor of a Caribbean town. Its trading port is the country’s most important, and it is also the destination for many cruise ships on their tourist routes. Limon’s history and development is bounded to the railway building that would have joined the Atlantic coast with San Jose. For this purpose, starting from 1.872, many Afro-Caribbean immigrants (especially from Jamaica) arrived to this town.
La historia y desarrollo de Limón esta muy ligada a la construcción del ferrocarril que uniría la costa atlántica con San José y para la que, a partir de 1.872, llegaron inmigrantes afrocaribeños, especialmente desde Jamaica.
Nowadays, Limon maintains this Antillean heritage and the spirit of Occidental Africa, the land of their ancestors, keeping their own artistic characteristics, gastronomy, music, and peculiar architecture.

Otro punto de interés es el embarcadero de Moin, a 7 Km de Limón, puerta de acceso al Caribe Norte, de aquí parten las embarcaciones que a través de ríos y canales te llevarán a destinos como Tortuguero. Un paseo en barca por estos canales es una buena oportunidad para acercarse a la naturaleza y a la vida silvestre.
Another interesting spot is Moin’s landing stage, 7 kilometers of Limon, the gate to the North Caribbean. This is the departure place for the boats that, through rivers and channels, will take you to destinations like Tortuguero. A boat trip across these channels is a good chance to get closer to nature and wild life.
