how i did it

If Barbie Can Get Lice, So Can You By Amy LAmAr

h

ead lice. We had to cancel play dates, the kids’ games and even our summer vacation because of it. Like the flu, lice hit everyone in our family, causing frustration, embarrassment and tears. We spent hundreds of dollars trying to get rid of it. We bought over-the-counter products and tried a prescription from our pediatrician. My daughter, Zoey, even slept in a shower cap full of mayonnaise night after night. I continually pulled nits (lice eggs) out of my family’s hair. A week would go by and there they were again. This went on for months. I washed bedding daily. I threw out bike helmets, pillows, barrettes, mattress pads ... anything I thought lice could “hide” in was ousted from our home. The worst of it? Bagging Zoey’s beloved stuffed animals for several weeks. Try explaining that to an 8-year-old. Thank goodness her Barbies were only in quarantine overnight in the freezer. (The sight of their faces “looking” out at me next

to the frozen broccoli still creeps me out.) The breaking point came when we were forced to cancel a trip to Oklahoma to see relatives. I was in tears while my husband searched the Internet for an end to the nightmare. He found Omahan Stephanie Clement, owner of Kiss Lice Goodbye. She started the business two years ago after repeated requests from customers at her salon, Family Fun Cutz. I expected Hazmat suits and bags full of sprays and tools when she and another lice specialist arrived at my door the next day. Instead, their “ammunition” fit into a purse. To our horror, the lice-fighting duo discovered that my 6-year-old son, Elliot, and I had lice in addition to Zoey. (I thought we had gotten rid of it weeks before.) The nits, Stephanie speculated, had been living in our hair for five months! The lice-fighters combed our hair – for three consecutive hours – until we were finally lice-free.

how to prevent lice from taking over your life HOW LICE INFEST

Head lice are parasitic wingless insects that live on human heads and feed on blood. You can get them from a “split second of hair-to-hair contact,” Stephanie said. They live for 48 hours on non-human hosts such as Barbie dolls, stuffed animals, couches, baseball and bike helmets, clothing, bedding, etc.

HOW LICE HIDE

Lice hide and camouflage themselves in the hair. One louse can lay up to seven eggs per day, and the eggs take seven days to hatch, Stephanie said. “One bug can cause an infestation.” The infestations that she typically sees have lasted for three months.

PREVENTION

Lice are especially prevalent during the first month of school and over the holidays, Stephanie said. Children should limit hugs and secret-telling, and girls who have long hair should wear it tightly pulled back. There are also preventive products on the market.

4

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Pimple-like bumps will appear on the nape of the neck and/or the back of the ears, and then the head will itch. Some people feel movement or biting as well.

NO ONE IS SAFE

“We have treated all sorts of hair (the cleaner the better),” said Katie Liberty, Kiss Lice Goodbye lice specialist. They have also treated all age groups from as young as 18 months old. “Nine out of 10 moms and two out of 10 dads get them when their child has them,” Stephanie said.

CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON

RID, which is a popular over-the-counter treatment, works 60 percent of the time, according to Stephanie. In some cases, the lice are immune to the poisons in these products, while in other cases the products don’t get all of the nits out. At-home treatments such as mayonnaise or olive oil will suffocate the lice but not the nits.

Pantry Overhaul

‘Zones’ for related foods add space to your kitchen By Amy Tokos

W

hen it comes to pantries, bigger isn’t always better. Things can get lost and disheveled in a hurry. Tidy shelves in any pantry can save you time, frustration and money. Start by investing in a few clear containers with lids, and then designate zones for related items. A zone can be a pantry shelf or a portion of a shelf. This method works for cabinets, too.

Zone 1: Dinner staples

Pasta, rice, soup starters, sauces. Place these at eye level.

Zone 2: Canned goods

Fruits, vegetables, soups. Place these near your dinner staples.

Zone 3: Condiments

Ketchup, mustard, pickles, olives. Keep these in an easy-to-reach spot for all family members.

Zone 4: Baking items

Chocolate chips, powdered sugar, flour, sugar, vanilla and other baking ingredients, plus boxed cake and dessert mixes. These can be on a higher shelf if you don’t bake a lot.

Zone 5: Snacks

Granola bars, pudding snacks, crackers, other grab-and-go items.

Zone 6: Breakfast foods Cereal, oatmeal.

Zone 7: Quick lunch foods Instant soup, macaroni and cheese, canned tuna, gelatin mixes.

Zone 8: School lunch items

Lunch bags, sandwich containers, napkins, straws, snack packs.

Zone 9: Drink zone

Hot chocolate and other drink mixes, juice boxes, bottled water, pop, instant coffee and tea, sugar, creamer.

6

TIP

Keep frequently used cooking items on higher shelves; kid’s snacks on lower shelves.

COVER STORY

Hello, Baby! Motherhood suits you well without shopping the maternity aisle

F

ashion’s most wearable trends are a pregnant woman’s dream. Dresses with empire waists, floaty tunics and stretchy bottoms make it possible to shop the regular racks well into a mom-to-be’s third trimester. The trick? Go up two sizes. Leanne Hill Carlson and Rachel Richards show how it’s done.

Leanne Hill Carlson

LEANNE: Maxi dress, $59.95; Princy’s knit scarf, $44.95, both from this & that & other stuff, Elkhorn. Hoop earrings, $6, and bangles, set of 5, $10, from Charming Charlie, Shadow Lake Towne Center, Papillion LOVE IT: The scarf actually is a poncho, folded in half lengthwise and looped through the neckline. When the temps drop, unfurl the scarf and your shoulders are fashionably covered. Genius!

LEANNE’S SON, HENry: Cable knit sweater, $49; Oxford shirt with plaid elbow patches, $36; Plaid cotton pant with adjustable waist, $46. All from Janie and Jack, Village Pointe Shopping Center.

16

WHAT SHE’S Lovin’ : “This is my first experience buying for a girl and I’m going a little crazy. I bought a white and pink crystal chandelier for her room. The fixture is beautiful and ties the entire room together.” WHAT SHE’d Skip: “Pee-pee Teepees. They don’t work, but they were a funny shower gift.” MuST-HAvES: Sippy cups; heartburn medication; boxes of raisins and Bunny Snacks; air conditioning; and naps. SHE’S dRooLinG ovER: “Pizza! And my regular clothes.” on MoTHERHood: “I have grown so much as a person – learning that I can balance a life that I enjoy and continue to do what I love along with raising a family.”

Keep it simple when you have to get dolled up. A ruched dress makes a statement, and the neckline needs no introduction. Great shape-wear cinches and smooths. “Blingy” earrings and a cute clutch take any dress from ordinary to extraordinary. A faux fur jacket is glamorous, and it will keep you warm on a cold fall night. Still not feeling it? Wear the most fabulous shoes you own.

When it’s time to head back to work, you may still be trying to keep up a nursing and pumping schedule. A crossover sweater gives you easy access, and it provides a little extra space for your “assets,” while camouflaging that tummy that you’re still working on. Layer a fitted camisole underneath to make a low neckline more office-appropriate.

Wardrobe Tips & Tricks

3 Flat riding boots or cute rain boots are ideal for comfort. Slip into a printed trench, and cinch that belt up high. Add a colorful scarf to direct attention to your neckline and your face.

A colored cami; flat, kneehigh boots, and a cute puffer vest will take a simple chambray dress up a notch when you’re out and about showing off your new bundle.

Matisse leather boots, $248, Kajoma’s.

A super cute diaper bag is a plus. Marc Jacobs and Skip Hop are my favorites. A backpack provides hands-free portability that makes toting baby must-haves a breeze.

battling postpartum depression

The Vincents: Morgan, Jill and Jason

N

ew parents describe the first moments after the birth of their child as pure euphoria and love. But for many mothers, that happiness is replaced by fear, anxiety and depression. Omahan Jill Vincent, 35, was one of those mothers when Morgan Rose Vincent was born on September 20, 2007. Jill’s friends and family and especially her husband,

Jason, were ecstatic. “Everyone kept congratulating us, but I knew something was not right. I felt distanced from her, like I was a spectator,” said Jill, an education specialist who works with kids who have behavioral and emotional disorders. At first, she attributed her feelings to a lack of sleep and common new mom anxiety. But a few days after arriving home from the hospital, Jill realized that her problem was much bigger. “I was standing in the backyard – alone – watching a bird,” she said. “The bird just flitted about, hopping from the fence to the yard, to a tree, to a bush. The bird had no constraints, and I was jealous ... of a bird!”

At that moment, Jill decided that she wanted out. Driving away from her husband, child, home and responsibilities seemed to be the only option. She went where many women go when they are faced with fear: Her mother’s house. Jill spent the next few days with her mom, who took her to a doctor. After being diagnosed with postpartum depression, Jill began the recovery process through counseling, medication and a strong familial support system. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, postpartum depression affects 10 to 15 percent of new mothers. It is more serious than the common “baby blues” that many new moms experience in the first two weeks after giving birth. Baby blues are due to hormonal and physical

changes, as well as the responsibilities that go with caring for a newborn. The symptoms for postpartum depression can include prolonged sadness, sleep problems, the inability or lack of desire to take care of an infant and hopelessness. Postpartum depression takes time to get over. For some, like Jill, medication can help. Counseling can also play a pivotal role in recovery. “It was six months before I thought, ‘Hey, I’m doing OK,’” Jill admitted. Today, she finds joy in Morgan, now 5. “It’s truly amazing to watch your child become a person with a personality, and boy does my daughter have one!”

Advice

the girlfriend is back ... Dear Sassy Housewife, My husband had an affair about two years ago with a woman he worked with at the time. He told me about it right after it happened. Although it was difficult, we went to couples counseling for a year to work through it all, and I eventually forgave him. But now that woman is back in his office after returning from a transfer position, and I am very uncomfortable with the situation. My husband assures me that his feelings for her are gone and that he is dedicated to our marriage. But I’m worried that she’ll steer his eye toward her, and I don’t think we could take another blow like that. We have one child together, and we are finally in a happy place. What can I do to make sure she stays away? Signed, Scared Spouse Dear Scared, It stinks to have to tell you this, but there is nothing you can do to make sure that she stays away from him. She actually isn’t the issue – it’s your husband and your marriage that you need to focus on. Don’t get me wrong: I’m sure that you want to claw the girl’s eyes out with a pitchfork (Or is that just me?). But the thing about

infidelity in a marriage is that it isn’t just about one person. I’m so happy to hear that you two worked through it and are in a happy place. But the hard stuff doesn’t stop with forgiveness; it continues by trying to keep that trust. If you don’t trust your husband, then this situation is going to drive you crazy and probably push you two apart. If you forgave him then, you can’t remind him of his mistakes every two seconds. It’s OK to tell him about your fears and what makes you uncomfortable, but forgiveness means that you have to stop blaming him. I recommend making an appointment with that couples therapist for a little checkup. I’m not saying that you two need to go back to weekly sessions, but couples therapy is great for touching base with a professional who has the tools to help you understand each other better. It’s also great for realizing how much you love each other. Listen, I’m a New Yorker. My first gut instinct would be to go slash that chic’s tires and put flyers all over the city warning other wives about her. But what good is that going to do? She still is going to go to work every day with your husband, and there’s

nothing you can do about that. You can do something about your marriage and how you communicate with your husband. And if your worst fear comes true and he does have another affair, then you will realize that perhaps he isn’t the man you thought he was. Maybe you hoped he could be someone that he just isn’t. You didn’t make him have an affair – that was his choice. In the end, it might be painful to end the relationship. But eventually, you’ll be grateful that you can open the door for someone who is worth the love that you are willing to put into the relationship. Sassy Housewife Danielle Herzog is a married mother of two. She is a former middle and high school teacher, and she served as a student counseling advisor in the Washington, D.C., area prior to moving to Omaha. She currently is pursuing a master’s degree in counseling.
