Celebrate Dad!

i

t’s simple. Little girls love their daddies. My daughters think their daddy hung the moon. My youngest follows him around like his shadow all day, and even helps herself to his every meal. When a “Frozen” song comes on, he’s right there singing “Love Is an Open Door” and “Let It Go.” And just before bedtime, he’ll tease them before kissing them goodnight. “Guess what?” he’ll ask. “What?” they’ll say. “Daddy loves you.” Happy Father’s Day to all of the great daddies out there! In this issue, you’ll find several dad, mom and family date ideas – from cheering on the Omaha Storm Chasers to fishing, and jumping on a trampoline. You’ll also find out how easy it is to make a rainy day – or any day – fun with art supplies. Enjoy! JUST FOR MOM We want to hear about your best birthday ever! Forget your kids. This is about yOU. We may feature your story in the July issue. Send your submissions to Amy LaMar at amy.lamar@owh.com by May 27.

‘Mancake’ Pancakes Makes 12

WHAT YOU NEED 8 slices bacon 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, or as needed 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons white sugar 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder 10 fluid ounces of Dad’s favorite beer, or more if needed 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional

WHAT YOU DO

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place a wire rack on top of the baking sheet; place bacon strips on the wire rack.

2. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven, and sprinkle the top of the bacon strips with half of the brown sugar. Return to oven and bake 10 more minutes.

3. Remove from oven and flip bacon to the other side. Sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar, and bake until the bacon is crisp and the brown sugar is golden brown – 10 to 15 more minutes. Remove bacon; let cool and crumble into small pieces.

4. Lightly grease a skillet with vegetable oil and place over medium-high heat.

5. Whisk flour, white sugar and baking powder in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk beer, melted butter, salt and vanilla extract. Lightly stir the liquid ingredients into the flour mixture to make a smooth batter. Stir candied bacon pieces into the batter. 6. Pour batter into the hot skillet one-half cup at a time and cook until edges are browned – about two minutes. Flip pancakes and cook until golden brown and the center is set, 3 to 5 more minutes. Tips For

F

rom Mick Jagger to Robert Downey Jr., dads everywhere are dressed in high style. But the dad in your life doesn’t need a record label contract or a million-dollar paycheck to look the part. Here’s how to dress Dad in star-studded style just in time for Father’s Day.

Dressing Dad What are the three most important aspects of men’s fashion? Fit, fit and fit. Because most men don’t enjoy shopping, they tend to walk into a store and pick out the first thing they see that vaguely resembles what they need. Nothing looks frumpier than a dress shirt with a collar that’s too big or pants that are too short. Take Dad shopping, and be sure to ask someone on the store’s staff to get his measurements.

Rock stars and leading men aren’t the only guys who wear accessories. Cool scarves, silk ties and brightly colored socks are all ways for Dad to show off his personality. His budget may not allow for Hermès, but he can still wear a plaid scarf tied neatly around his neck with a navy peacoat or monogrammed cuff links. Any guy can pair polka dot or striped socks under dress pants for an unexpected pop, too.

If Dad is old enough to read this column, he should not be wearing his pants like Justin Bieber. Whether he is young enough to still think it looks cool or he is just lazy, set him straight. Pants are made to be worn right below the waistline. Once Dad has pants that fit correctly, he should invest in a belt. And if he spends time in an office that requires business-casual clothing or more formal attire, matching shoes are a swell choice.

Developing his personal style will make Dad look good and feel even better. Whether it’s fair or not, people do judge a book by its cover. If Dad is more of an outdoorsman, his style will be different than if he prefers the newest dining hot spot over a backyard barbecue. While dressing effectively doesn’t mean that he needs to dress like he’s on Wall Street, it does mean that he should be dressed comfortably and appropriately for every occasion.

rt supplies are inspiring. And sometimes we all need inspiration, especially on rainy days in the summertime. Fill a kid’s grocery cart, cardboard box or plastic cups with some fun art supplies like chalk, assorted buttons, short and long pieces of ribbon and craft foam in various shapes. Add a vinyl tablecloth for messy projects like Play-Doh; colored pencils and crayons for drawing and coloring; and Duct tape for a colorful racetrack on the carpet or floor for instant creative fun. Your kids will enjoy their new projects so much that they won’t need an excuse like a rainy day to get their art supplies out again. You might want to keep them well-stocked just in case.

D.I.Y. project

WHAT YOU NEED Vinyl record Oven-safe medium-sized pot or metal bowl Baking sheet WHAT YOU DO 1. Preheat oven to 200 to 250 degrees. Make sure the kitchen area is well-ventilated. 2. Place your record on the center of an upside-down pot or metal bowl. Place the record and the pot/bowl on a baking sheet. 3. Place in the center of the lowest rack in the oven for 4 to 8 minutes, or until the vinyl starts to “flop” and “mold” itself around the bowl.

4. Remove baking sheet from the oven once you notice some real flopping going on. You will only have a few seconds to adjust the angle of the bottom and the general shape of the bowl. 5. Put your record into another bowl and shape it around that, or you can hand-mold* it. You might like the way it looks right as you take it out of the oven; if so, skip the molding. 6. Let the bowl cool for 10 to 15 minutes. 7. Flip it over and enjoy your handiwork.

Thrift stores are a great source for old vinyl. This record was 99 cents at Goodwill.

Plan early so your family can pack smart.

t

raveling with a family is always an adventure. Whether you are driving or flying, you can help make packing less stressful and the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

Create a master family paCking list. A few weeks before you leave for your vacation, start a list of what you need to pack. Keep it in a handy location so when things come to mind they can be added. As you are packing, make additions and check things off. A couple of days before you leave, type the list into your computer and print it. When you get back home from your trip, update the list with your last-minute additions and anything you might have forgotten. Save the updated list for your next trip. make a list of what your kids need to paCk. Give each kid a personal packing list and a reusable grocery bag to put their stuff in. Then you can place their bags directly into their suitcases (after a quick parent check, of course). The bags help create division, especially for small things like socks and underwear. Upon arrival at your destination, the kids can pull out their bags and put them in their spots. give eaCh kid a travel entertainment baCkpaCk. All kids ages 4 and up can be responsible for packing their own travel backpack (feel free to make a few suggestions). If

you are flying, it is important to also make your child responsible for carrying the backpack. This keeps the kids from over-packing and reduces the clutter in the car if you’re driving. Have your kids make a list of what they put in their backpack. This list can be helpful when you are leaving a destination. Keep the list in a pocket of the backpack so that when it’s time to leave, there will be less scrambling to find their stuff. They may never leave something behind again. Driving? Try to limit movies and electronic devices. Although these do help pass the time, we have a beautiful country that the kids will never see if they are always watching a movie or looking down at their iPod. Bring maps and stop at visitors’ centers. Relish the journey and make a few stops along the way. The kids can explore all the brochures and learn about the area – even if you’re just passing through. Try to make time to enjoy the simple things along the journey. Sometimes those are the best memories your kids will have of the trip. Photo: Chimney roCk in nebraska; fliCkr.Com

Advice // dAnielle Herzog Sassy Housewife Danielle Herzog is a married mother of two and a former middle and high school teacher. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in counseling.

Dear Sassy Housewife, My daughter is just finishing seventh grade. All of her friends are going to expensive summer camps this year, and honestly, we just don’t have the money to do that. She is begging us to go, but it’s just too tight financially right now. I can tell she feels like an outsider for not going, and I hate that. What can I do? Signed, Fretting About Finances Dear Fretting, Ah, seventh-grade girls, aren’t they fun? I remember begging my mother for a pair of Guess jeans when I was in seventh grade. They were $125, and my mother basically laughed at me. After begging and begging, she finally agreed to pay half if I paid the other half. So I started babysitting every weekend. By the time I made enough money, the jeans weren’t popular anymore. You could consider seeing if your daughter wants to babysit or do a job like that to make the money. However, I truly believe that rejection is a life lesson that we have to teach our children. Sometimes it’s hard to not get what you want because the money isn’t there. But don’t feel bad. You are providing for your child’s needs – you don’t have to provide for all of her wants. Make a schedule with your daughter for the summer. When does she want to go to the pool? When should you plan picnics and park time? Let her know that she is welcome to hang out with her friends and to go do things together. It might not be at camp, but she could always pitch a tent in the backyard and create her own campground. Plus, there won’t be any camp counselors telling her and her friends to be quiet and to go to bed. That might actually be better than any camp you could pay for.
