Get Active!

e avoided lazy summer days by getting the kids out of the house and playing in the yard as much as possible. If the kids ever complained about being bored, we played a jump-and-count game so we were still up and being active. Now that two of my three children are old enough to play organized sports, we’re looking at the best options for them. For Bobby, that’s basketball. Alejandra recently joined a Baile folklorico dance class, and we’re gearing up for swim lessons. Research shows that active kids do better in school, are better able to concentrate and even exhibit fewer behavior problems. In this issue, you’ll find that team sports teach kids more than fitness. They improve motor skills, increase self-esteem and foster cooperation and teamwork. Even non-athletic children can satisfy physical activity recommendations with non-competitive activities such as biking, swimming and jogging, or by dancing or playing games like tag. So get up, get out and get active with your kids!

Play Ball!

M

Neighborhood pick-up games feed kids’ desire to play.

y oldest son doesn’t show much interest in organized sports. It’s not that he doesn’t like them. He just prefers the neighborhood pick-up games that take place in our backyard on most summer evenings. As soon as my husband gets home from work, our boys know that it’s time to play ball. Many of the neighborhood kids, ranging in age from 4 to 10 years old, head out to start picking teams. One of AMy the oldest GrACe neighbor boys plays baseball competitively and is very good. God love him for putting up with the younger kids, who interrupt the game by passing

4

through with lightsabers. The teams are usually comprised of an odd number of players, and the members of each team are adjusted according to ability. It’s not uncommon to have a team of two playing against a team of five – three of whom are 4-year-olds. The kids use anything and everything for bases. Luckily, my landscaping rocks have finally been replaced with flip-flops at first and third bases. Home plate tends to be represented by a plastic Captain America shield. And the ghost-runner phenomenon has been sufficiently explained and executed in case the teams have been particularly light on players. Our neighborhood recently held a summer solstice party, and several dads were out with the kids for another installment of backyard baseball. This time, they took it to the neighbors’ large

front yards because they had more substantial teams. From what I could ascertain, the game got pretty competitive. One of the dads “crushed” the Wiffle ball with his plastic bat, rendering the ball useless. Another dad got into a “heated” disagreement with a batter one-third his age about strike zones. Later, in a remorseful text, that dad bashfully came to the realization that it had been a ridiculous argument. As I write this piece, another game is gearing up outside my back door. Captain America’s shield and a ratty pair of flip-flops are in place. Disproportionate teams have been chosen. The bull pen is full. And the first hit has just resulted in a triple. Bring on the ghosts. It’s time to play ball! Amy Grace writes Fridays on momaha.com.

K

ids keep us busy. How much time do you spend supporting your kids’ activities? When is the last time you had a date night? Can’t remember? It may be time to take a step back and evaluate your family’s priorities. When you do this, remember that time on the sidelines watching your kids play sports is not quality family time. One thing that helps many families is to have a one-sport rule, meaning that kids can only play one sport per season. This will give them a chance to focus their time on one sport, plus have free time. This is good for them ... and us. Can your hubby find the field? Communication is key here. How are you communicating the time and location of the kids’ activities? A synched calendar system works best. You can use Google, or you

6

By Amy Tokos

can try something like Cozi, which emails a weekly schedule every Sunday. If you are a non-techie, create a wall calendar system to display the schedule. Include the time and location of events, and note if it is your turn to bring treats. Can you multitask? Will you be sitting for an hour while your child practices? Use this time! Read the newspaper or your favorite magazine, or go for a run. Bring your other kids along for time in the car to quiz them on their spelling tests. Make the most of the time. Can you carpool? This can be a huge time and sanity saver. Remember the saying, “It takes a village.” Do you have time for a family meal? Plan and your answer can be yes. You may be eating at 7:30 p.m., but it can happen. Take healthy snacks with you for the

early evening at practice, and plan easy meals for when you get home. Learn how to cook with your CrockPot. Double all of your meals and freeze the extras. This will give you a supply of meals in your freezer for quick fixing on busy days. Can you get your family to help? Once a week – Sunday evening works well – have a family meeting. Review the schedule and let everyone know what is planned for the week. This is a good time to talk about the meals you have planned and the carpools that have been arranged. Identify any last-minute changes or needs. This gives everyone a chance to take responsibility for their activities. Plus, it is a one-time communication instead of a daily scramble. OFF-SEASON

VS.

Create one location in your child’s room for her uniform and accessories. This can be a dedicated drawer or shelf. Have a sports bag for balls and shoes. This bag can be kept in a convenient graband-go location. Hooks in the garage or near the front door work well.

PHOTO: WOrld-Herald

IN SEASON

One of the easiest things you can do is create a sports bin for off-season uniforms and accessories. Keep the bin in a linen closet or other handy location. This will prevent a jersey from disappearing in your child’s room. The beginning of the next season will be much easier when you can find the shin guards and jerseys in the bin.

Get More For a Lot Less

How I Do It

You can rack up savings at kids’ consignment sales, and even earn spending money by stocking the shelves yourself. by Amy LamAr

I

f you haven’t been to a children’s consignment sale, it’s time to check one out. Several sales are held in Omaha in the spring and fall, and they offer everything you can imagine for kids at great prices. You will find clothes (sizes newborn through juniors), baby items, costumes, coats, shoes, toys, books, nursing supplies, maternity clothes and a whole lot more. I replace my two kids’ entire wardrobes for around $200 per season by shopping these biannual sales. That’s $400 per year! I also consign my kids’ stuff. I made $1,000 at my first sale. Baby items can really add up when you’re talking about multiple bouncy seats, a high chair, clothes and everything else my kids touched during the first years of their lives. Now that they are older (ages 8 and 6), I mainly sell their clothes and shoes. But I still make about $400 per sale. It’s a great excuse to clean out closets, see what the kids have grown out of and make some money. The best part about selling items on consignment is that you get to shop early. I often snag really cute, quality items, including brands such as Gap, Gymboree, Nike and Janie + Jack. Most sales give consignors 70 percent of their earnings. You can earn up to 75 percent if you volunteer to work at some sales. Another bonus: Volunteering allows you to shop even earlier. If there is a downside, it’s the time that’s involved in prepping your items for consignment. These sales only accept items that are in season, clean and free of stains or holes – among other restrictions. You must tag each item with a description, size and price. And you must haul your items to the sale and place them on the sales floor yourself (some sales do this last step for you). But when that check comes in the mail, all of your hard work is worth it. With kids’ shirts selling for around $4, jeans going for $5 to $6 and shoes being sold for $4 to $7, you can’t make this much money at a garage sale. And the sale will usually donate what doesn’t sell for you. You never have to see your stuff again.

Youth Sports Encourage Kids to Be Active Sportsmanship, respect and perseverance are bonuses.

Y

outh sports can be an easy and affordable way to get kids active and healthy. But parents benefit, too. Just ask Kyle Armstrong, a coach and father of three boys. Since 2005, Armstrong has coached flag football, soccer, basketball and baseball. And he has seen the benefits of youth sports firsthand. “I get to spend time with each of my boys while participating in sports and having fun,” he said. Youth sports have given Armstrong the opportunity to spend quality time with each child independently. His family also has enjoyed quality time that may not have happened otherwise, he said. Sports provide an outlet for children to learn the basic skills of the sport as well as teamwork, respect and perseverance. “We may not always win, but it’s important to play hard and give it our best,” Armstrong said. “I try to teach them the fundamentals of the sport, and sportsmanship is really important to me.” Armstrong understands that children will not like all sports. So he feels that it’s important for parents to expose children to a wide variety. He recommends that parents try a recreational league before a select or competitive league. “Give the sport a try,” he said. “Start and finish the season. But don’t force them to continue if they’re not interested.” Youth sports provide an outlet for social interaction and responsibility, and they provide opportunities to be caring toward teammates. Some leagues start as early as 3 years old, and focus on basic skills, learning to listen and following directions.

Amanda Sindelar, youth sports director for the Sarpy County YMCA, gives five tips on what to look for to ensure that your child is enjoying the sport he is participating in: 1. Ask questions. Ask your child if he enjoys practice and the weekly games. 2. Is your child complaining about practice or hesitant to go to a game? He may not be enjoying the sport. 3. Is your child getting along with his teammates? Children who have friends or make new friends during practice are more likely to enjoy the sport. 4. Is your child excited to bring snacks to the game? Bringing snacks gives the child the responsibility to provide the team with a treat – win or lose. 5. Does he talk excitedly about practice and/or games? If your child is excited about a new skill he has learned or highlights a play during practice, you can be sure that he is enjoying the sport. Don’t shy away from sports because of the cost. Youth sports can be very affordable for any family, said Sindelar. Also, parents should get involved. Parents can become coaches, assistant coaches, team moms or plan team activities. When parents get involved with their child’s sports team, he is more likely to enjoy it. In busy households, planning is key to making a commitment to organized sports, said Dave Mlnarik, executive director of the Nebraska Sports Council. Start by holding a family meeting and laying out a schedule. “If you don’t plan physical activity, you just don’t do it,” Mlnarik said.

ON YOUR OWN

Sports are great for physical activity and team-building. You can also look in your own neighborhood to find ways to utilize the landmarks and resources locally, said Dave Mlnarik of the Nebraska Sports Council. 1. Plan a scavenger hunt using the GPS on your smartphone or other device. 2. Swim or wade in a local lake. 3. Hike at a state park. 4. Climb the stairs at a local landmark or shopping mall. 5. Find a local attraction to tour, and combine other physical activities with the tour.

5 Ways to Get Your Kids Moving When You’re Racing the Clock by shauna brayman

y

our child’s game is in an hour, but he’s not even close to being ready. You’re still looking under beds for his baseball cleats, and his glove might (hopefully) be in the toy chest. Don’t stress. Local experts share their best tips for getting you out the door and where you need to be on time.

1

Review the practice and game schedules as soon as you receive them, advised Brandon Palmer, the Salvation Army Kroc Center’s director of sports and recreation. Post the schedules in a place where everyone in your household can see them.

2

Make a daily itinerary. Know what and when things are going on and when you should leave so you can be there on time, said Tiffany Costello, an Omaha mother of four.

5 Wake up early enough to get other tasks out of the way. When you get things done early, the kids won’t be in the way and life won’t be so hectic.

3

4

Have all the gear in a bag and ready to go the night before. Designate a specific spot in your child’s bedroom for the uniform, said Amy Tokos of Freshly Organized. “Don’t spread (sports gear) throughout the entire room.”

Plan meals and snacks. Whitney Ceas, a registered dietitian at Hy-Vee, recommended having things ready for the next day, and picking foods that are easy to grab such as whole fruits (bananas, peaches, plums) or nuts. Pair a snack with a protein. For example, peanut butter and apple slices or celery sticks. If you make your own, use appropriate portion sizes.

Easy As Pie no matter how you ‘slice’ it, an old-fashioned pie party is a simple way to gather friends and savor the waning days of summer. TexT by Karen blanc PhoTograPhy by KurT a. Keeler

arlier this summer, I drew on sweet memories of a country church tradition for a pie and ice cream social that doubled as a high school graduation party. We started the party with 33 homemade pies, and by the end of the day, we had served more than 250 slices. My daughter, Hannah, single-handedly prepped and baked 25 pies in one

16

week from a single oven with a 9-month-old at her side. Daughter Evian contributed four family favorites, while Aunt Melinda prepared four pies from recipes popular at the 4-H Kitchen at the Burt County Fair. If all of that pie-baking scares you, ask your guests to bring a pie to share, and supplement the offerings for good variety. Another timesaver: Premade crusts.

Shop thrift stores for vintage plates for serving pie slices. Use old quilts as tablecloths.

Fruity Refreshment

H

ere’s a refreshing recipe to try while strawberries are still in season. Agua fresca, or aguas de frutas, is literally translated in Spanish as “fresh water” or “fruit waters.” In Mexico, these wonderful drinks are made from whatever fruit is in season, combined with sweetener (typically sugar) and water. Traditionally, the fruit is mashed by hand with a fork.

strawberry Agua de Fresca

WHAT YOU DO

Servings: 4 Prep time: 5 minutes

1. Prepare strawberries for serving by rinsing with caps still attached under a gentle spray of cool water; pat dry with a paper towel. Wash, hull and slice the berries.

WHAT YOU NEED 1 cup fresh strawberries 4 cups cubed and seeded watermelon 3/4 cup lemon juice 2 cups ice

TIP When purchasing berries, shop with your nose. Always pick the plumpest and most fragrant berries. They should be firm, bright and freshlooking, with no mold or bruises. The caps should be bright green, fresh-looking and fully attached.

2. In a blender, combine strawberries, watermelon, lemon juice and ice. Blend until smooth. 3. Pour the fruity concoction into tall or barrel-shaped glasses, and serve with whole or sliced strawberries as a garnish. VARIATIONS Agua de melon (cantaloupe), Agua de sandia (watermelon), Agua de papaya (papaya with a little lime juice) and Agua de piña (pineapple). Parents Mean Well, But ... Junk food and Tv time are getting in the way of homework. Dear Sassy Housewife, I’m a divorced single mother of two amazing children. Their father isn’t in the picture, and I’m lucky enough that my parents help us out a lot. My children go over to their house after school, and as much as I appreciate my parents’ help, I am having a tough time with how they do things. My parents feed my kids junk food and let them watch hours of television. Their homework is never finished, so we end up staying up late to complete basic assignments. How do I deal with this situation and not ruin a good thing? Signed, A Meddling Mother? Dear Meddling, Can I go live with your parents? I dream about sitting in front of the television eating junk food every day. It’s just how I would describe heaven. Oh wait, I would also include cocktails. Do you think they would serve me a martini while I’m watching reality television? But I see your point. That shouldn’t be a child’s lifestyle. It should be saved for an adult’s fantasy. So what should you do? You need to have an open and non-confrontational talk with your parents. Yes, I know that it is terrifying to talk to our parents about something they have done that we don’t like. I had to tell my parents that I didn’t think letting my son climb a bookcase showed off

his athletic abilities. You can do this in an honest and positive manner. Always start challenging conversations with a compliment. Tell your parents how grateful you are for all that they do. Tell them all the things that they are doing right. Then ask if they could help you with something. Focus on the fact that you are staying up late with your kids to finish assignments and it’s causing them to be tired. Ask if your parents wouldn’t mind starting each day after school with homework and maybe fruit for a snack. Let your parents know that your kids aren’t eating as much fruit as they should when they are home with you. Approaching the subject as if you are asking for help rather than telling them what they are doing wrong might help them be less defensive. If after that conversation nothing changes, I think you should show up at 10 p.m. at their house and ask if they could help with your child’s math problems. Maybe bring an apple with you as well … I’m guessing that they might understand after that. Sassy Housewife Danielle Herzog is a married mother of two.
