The majesty of the horse has bewitched the imagination of man for some 16,000 years. Since the first known images depicting horses in Palaeolithic cave paintings man has been on a quest to capture the essence of the horse. Horses have been used in art as a symbol of power, strength and speed. The imposing Roman equestrian tradition of the seated ruler has been borrowed throughout the centuries to instil authority to figures such as Charles I by Sir Anthony van Dyke and the neo-classical masterpieces of JacquesLouis David's Napoleon Bonaparte. This tradition is evident in Sydney with the heightened imperial statement of HM Edward VI standing guard in bronze over Bridge Street. Equus has been timed to complement the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival a time of the year when the city comes alive in celebration of the noble thoroughbred. Whilst not all the works included in Equus depict thoroughbreds, it is important to consider the role of the horse in art, in war and peace. In this spirit we have assembled works from over thirty Australian and International artists. Kate Smith, co-curator has been tireless in commissioning new work from emerging artists for this exhibition. Equus respects the tradition of horses in art but also pursues a contemporary focus. It is exciting to reflect on the range of mediums and genres explored by artists in this exhibition, the regency hunter of Thomas Woodward gazes across the gallery over works made in ceramic, charcoal, wire, film and bronze. At the core of each work chosen is the very Êlan that first drew prehistoric man to reflect in pure wonder on this magnificent creature. Edward Hoddle Co-curator of Equus
