The Bachelor of Music in Sacred Music offered at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas prepares students for careers in music and related fields or graduate study in all areas of music.
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES The Music Department at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) helps students prepare for a career in music. The program emphasizes choral conducting, performance study, music ministry, music theory, music history and ethnomusicology. Facilities include the Sacred Heart Chapel; Gutierrez World Instrument and Linna MerrittCrowe Vintage Instrument Collections, whose instruments advanced students may use; Pape Music Library and Technology Lab; keyboard lab; recital hall/ensemble rehearsal room; Thiry Auditorium—a 1,200 seat venue for performances; percussion studio; piano studio; practice rooms; and student lounge. The Music Department frequently hosts prestigious academic conferences, such as the American Musicological Society, music festivals, and competitions in addition to the OLLU All-State High School Honor Choir Camp and the High School Mariachi Camp during the summer. Small classes allow for personal attention to every student in the music program. Music majors and minors may join the Delta Omega Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon Music Honor Fraternity. Our faculty are accomplished professional performers, conductors, composers, research scholars and teachers. They bring a wealth of experience from the real world of professional music to the classroom, ensembles, and applied music studies. The music faculty are dedicated to ensuring students have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue lasting careers in music. OLLU offers scholarships specifically for music majors and minors. Incoming freshmen or transfer students are considered for music scholarships based upon a live audition scheduled through the music department. Students unable to attend a live audition may submit video and audio audition materials. All auditions must be completed prior to beginning the first semester. MUSIC ORGANIZATIONS Mu Phi Epsilon Music Honor Fraternity: Music majors and minors have the opportunity to become members of this international music honor fraternity. The fraternity promotes scholarship, musical friendship and service among its members. As an international organization, it offers professional performance, networking and scholarship opportunities for aspiring young musicians. Music Ensembles Association (MEA): All students enrolled in music ensembles are eligible to become members of the MEA. This association engages in community outreach services, such as Project Sing! and Lake-o-ween, in addition to sponsoring its members for music workshops, clinics and conferences through fundraising. THE UNIVERSITY Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU), founded in 1895 by the Congregation of Divine Providence, is a coeducational liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students. A multicampus, regional university, OLLU has campuses in San Antonio, The Woodlands (Houston) and the Rio Grande Valley. The University offers more than 30 undergraduate majors and minors, more than 14 master’s degree programs and two doctoral degree programs.
