COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES BACHELOR’S DEGREES IN ENGLISH DEGREES • Bachelor of Arts in English • Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Professional and Technical Writing • Minor in English • Minor in Professional and Technical Writing The English Program at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) offers undergraduate programs that let students explore a variety of authors and genres from Shakespeare to Mexican-American Literature, while composition courses let them polish their skills in academic writing. A distinguished faculty, small class sizes and innovative courses and programs add to the valuable benefits of earning an English degree at OLLU. The new concentration and minor in Professional and Technical Writing will teach students the skills to communicate digitally through the creation of technical and business documents. The program allows for an emphasis in writing in various disciplines such as the sciences, the social sciences, medicine, and business. The skills learned through this program will create digitally literate students who will be an important asset to future employers. Composition courses are taught in the computer labs to enhance the writing experience. A mixture of service-learning and interdisciplinary courses offers students new pedagogical approaches to their studies. The senior portfolio, part of the graduation requirements for the program, allows students to reflect on their studies and prepare for career opportunities and graduate school. Students interested in teaching English at the secondary level receive a Bachelor of Arts in English. The degree requires courses in English and education. TEACHER CERTIFICATION OPTION: Bachelor of Arts in English for Grades 7-12 English Language Arts Certification WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE: NAN CUBA Author and professor of English Nan Cuba serves as OLLU’s official writer-in-residence, which means she will lend her time, talent and energy to help students perfect their craft. Internationally acclaimed author Sandra Cisneros served as the previous writer-inresidence. VISITING WRITER PROGRAM OLLU has welcomed well-known authors to campus to take part in the Visiting Writer Program. Under the program, an author visits OLLU for a semester to work with students and give a public reading. Previous visiting writers have included Laurie Ann Guerrero, Richard Blanco, K.L. Cook, Carmen Tafolla, Pamela Johnston and Alison Moore. THE THING ITSELF “The Thing Itself” is a literary journal that is published annually by the English Program. Students, faculty and staff, as well as national and international writers and artists, can submit poetry, fiction, nonfiction and art for publication consideration in the journal. The journal’s student editorial board and appointed faculty evaluate all entries for inclusion in the journal and professionals outside the University community select the winners of cash awards for best entries.
