THE LEGEND OF OGOPOGO The Ogopogo was named by the Vancouver Province newspaper on August 24, 1926 after an English music hall song called Ogopogo which was popular in the 1920's. The Okanagan First Nations people called the Ogopogo "N'HAATIK" which translates as "Lake Serpent Spirit". Folklore has it that the Lake serpent was said to live in a cave near Rattlesnake Island and has claimed many lives. The Ogopogo is said to be green in color with a horse or goat like head that swallows its prey whole. Its snake like body is one to two feet wide, and between 15 and 70 feet long. When swimming near the surface of the lake the Ogopogo's humps have been seen propelled above the water's surface.
