LIPPER INTERNSHIP FOR HOLOCAUST EDUCATION Internship Description: Since fall 1998, the Lipper Internship has brought together graduate and undergraduate students from across the Northeast to train in New York City for a semester-long internship in museum education. Prior to the beginning of the semester Interns attend an intensive 10-day training session at the Museum to learn how to teach public middle and high school students about the Holocaust. During training Interns meet with Museum staff, hear testimony from Holocaust survivors, and learn methods for teaching from artifacts in the Museum's collection. Following training, Interns work in pairs, visiting several middle and high schools in their college communities to implement the three parts of the Internship program. The Lipper Internship benefits students and teachers in schools throughout the Northeast, providing an introductory lesson using images of artifacts and photographs from the Museum collection before the tour and a post-visit session to continue discussion. The program also provides a growth opportunity for the Interns, many of whom continue to pursue academic or professional interests related to their experiences teaching about Jewish heritage and the Holocaust. Interns receive a stipend and are reimbursed for travel expenses. Lodging in New York City is provided during the training period, if necessary. Students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The semester-long program is designed for college and graduate students from a variety of fields and backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have a desire to learn and educate; an appreciation for museums; and an ability to work well with others.
