INTRODUCING

Dominique & Tiffany

Greetings everyone! My name is Dominique Aaron and I am the new CAP Graduate Associate. I was born and raised on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from Saint Martin de Porres High School. After high school, I became a prOUd member of the Ohio University bobcat family. During my undergraduate career I explored a few majors but I finally decided on a Bachelor’s of Specialized Studies.

My focuses were African American Studies, Communication Studies and Sociology. While in college, I worked in the Campus Involvement Center for four years and I was also a founding member and VP of Internal Affairs for the Black Student Union. Likewise, I am a former CAP student and member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International.

After graduation, I accepted a position in the docket department at Tucker Ellis LLP. My goal was to work for a year and apply to graduate schools with programs that offered higher education. I am currently a first year graduate student in the College Student Personnel program in t h e department of Counseling and Higher Education. I chose this field because I love the optimistic atmosphere colleges and universities produce. Moreover, I thoroughly enjoying working with students and helping them nurture their dreams and talents.

Education is a fundament tool that is extremely important to me. I plan to have a long and fluid career in higher education. I am ecstatic to work with the CAP program this year. As a former CAP student I hope to bring insight from the student’s perspective and incorporate some new aspects from an advisor’s prospective. I know this is going to be an amazing experience. Feel free to contact me anytime about anything. I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hello! My name is Tiffany Arnold, I am the new Assistant Director for CAP. I have had the opportunity to meet many CAP students and am looking forward to meeting the rest of you as the semester goes on. A little about me, I live in Beverly, Ohio with my husband Nick and my two boys Alden (8 years) and Jude (6 years). We also have two dogs and eight chickens. I am a graduate of Ohio University with my Bachelors in Political Science and my Masters of Education with Licensure. I am currently finishing up my course work for my doctoral program in Education and hope to take my Comprehensive Exams next fall! I come to you with a background in TRiO programs like CAP. I have worked with both the OU and the Washington State Community College TRiO Upward Bound programs for the last nine years and decided I was ready to go to move on to working with college students as well. I am doing my best to learn the most effective way to meet your needs and help you succeed in your post-secondary goals. I have always held a strong belief that working with students is more than just about academics. It is about being a support system in whatever area of life you need. You are a whole person, not just an academic, so I am happy to help wherever I’m needed. Best wishes on a successful semester and I hope to meet you all soon!

Getting involved on campus was one of the best choices I’ve made since I started here at Ohio University. I remember the first weekend of my freshmen year; I attended a meeting for our dorm. I didn’t know anyone and my roommate was a random selection. Like most students, I was scared out of my mind; I was on my own for the very first time in my life. One of the RA’s spoke about Hall Council and that sign-ups were that night. I forced myself to go, and I am happy that I did because it ended up being one of the most fun groups I’ve been involved in. Being in Hall Council also opened up new doors to other organizations and opportunities that I would never have even known about, had I not made myself step outside of my comfort zone and attend that first meeting.

Throughout my freshman year, I became a member of Hall Council, a member of The Residence Action Council, a TIME

peer mentor, a housing ambassador, and more! Being involved kept me busy and introduced me to new, life-long friends that I still am lucky enough to see or talk to daily.

It was very nerve wracking for me to take that first step and branch out. I know it can be intimidating and overwhelming coming to a fairly decent sized university like OU, but stepping out of your comfort zone and taking risks is what college is all about. This is the time to explore and make new connections you wouldn’t have the chance to make had you not made the best decision of your life and attended Ohio University. One tiny step like going to one meeting for a club you might be interested in, or asking your RA what clubs or organizations they would recommend could lead to wonderful and exciting new experiences. I challenge you to make these small steps and see what’s out there.

Fun Around Town By: Zyrece Montegomery Co nc er ts Uptown, The Athena Cinema, on Court Street is always showing independent and mainstream films. They have also been known to screen current films created by OU students. EVERY Tuesday films are $4.

The Ohio University Performing Arts Series has a wide variety of entertainment that happens year round. Performances are usually held in Baker University Center Theater or Templeton Blackburn Memorial Auditorium (MEMOD). FUN AROUND TOWN

UPTOWN Casa, The Front Room, The Union Bar host shows by local and touring artist. They’re cheap and fun! Random acts to watch out for: If you’re lucky you can catch a group of students who spin fire and hoola-hoops at parties. Always fun to see. The Fine Arts College always has shows as well like dance, music, or theater. Or if you are into a more intimate adventure there’s the ridges or bong hill. Then there’s Zip lining!!! There are TONS of things to do in Athens if you just meet the right people. So have fun exploring!!

It happens to all of us. One day, we’re in perfect health. The next, the sniffles or coughs—sometimes both—start coming and, next thing you know, you got a fullblown cold. Or worse.

Even in the hectic, minute-by-minute world of college, we are just as capable of being caught by an illness or bug swimming around campus.

Instead of letting said aliment take over your life, however, here are some ways that you can make sure that you’re in good health.

The first is to visit the local Hudson Health Center.

Located in the heart of Athens in Building 35, Hudson operates as part of Campus Care, which treats students dealing with physical or mental distress.

Their staff are all welltrained and willing to help anyone coming

into their medical center. This includes undergraduate, graduate and medical students enrolled on campus. Additionally, one does not have to be enrolled in Ohio University’s Student Injury and Sickness Insurance to use their services.

If you’re looking to just buy some cough medicine and tissues for the go, however, there are plenty of medical services available at CVS on S. Court Street. On 32 S. Court Street, their services also includes a pharmacy, which is opening from 8:30-6:30 p.m during the work day.

These are the two primary services available to students in Ohio University for medical care.

Sometime, a cup of soup and some Ginger Ale can do the trick too.

Off-Campus Living By: Adriane Stairhime

There are many questions to consider when looking for a place to live off campus. Here are a few basic steps to getting started!

1) It’s beneficial to look for a place to live a year before you want to live there.

• This might sound crazy, but places get signed very quickly at the beginning of fall semester. The best thing to do is to apartment/house search the first few weeks, to get the stress out of the way.

2) Know who you want to live with before you start looking.

• This may sound like common sense, but you want the person you live with to be responsible and reliable. It’s nice to know if the contract is joint or independent. (Any landlord should know what this questions means.)

3) Keep in mind what your budget is.

• It is beneficial to look around at several places to get an idea of prices you are willing to pay. There are usually 4 payments, 2 each semester. There will also be a deposit when you actually sign for the apartment.

4) Things you might want to look for when scoping out different rental properties: • Where will you do your laundry?

• Where is the closest/cheapest parking?

• Does it have a dishwasher?

• Is electric, water, and wifi included?

• Where do you throw out the trash?

• How far away or close to campus is the place?

5) Keep your options and mind open.

• Compare what you like about each place.

This will probably be a new experience for you and you may get confused and stressed. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or feel uncertain. Everything will work out in the end!

Bachelor of

Specialized Studies

The B.S.S. program allows students to create a facultyapproved, multidisciplinary degree program tailored to their individual interests and needs.

The B.S.S. is a great fit for students who would like to combine courses from different academic departments to create a unique major and for students who have interests and career goals not met by a current Ohio University major.

B.S.S. Degree Requirements

As a student in the Bachelor of Specialized Studies program, you may complete one or more academic minors, as long as the courses taken to meet the minor requirements are not included in the Area of Concentration. You need to indicate your intention to complete a minor at the time you submit your Bachelor of Specialized Studies application. Courses required to earn a certificate may be included in the Area of Concentration.

Up to 32 hours earned through the Experiential Learning Program may be applied to the Bachelor of Specialized Studies degree program. A maximum of 30 hours from the College of Business

may be included in a Bachelor of Specialized Studies degree program.

B.S.S. students may earn departmental honors through University College. Students must have an accumulated GPA within the top 20 percent of B.S.S. students and complete an honors thesis to be eligible to earn departmental honors.

Guidelines and an application are available from the director of degree programs.

To submit an application to the Specialized Studies program for consideration, you must: 1. Be currently registered as a degree-seeking student; 2. Anticipate reaching sophomore rank (at least 30 semester hours earned) in the semester you apply; and 3. Have earned an accumulative GPA of 2.0 or above.

To graduate with a Bachelor of Specialized Studies degree, you must: 1. Earn 120 hours, of which at least 39 must be courses with catalog numbers at the 3000-level or above, as shown in this catalog. This does not include graduate level courses.

2. Complete no fewer than 30 hours (the degree residency requirement) after being admitted to the Specialized Studies program. This total excludes any transfer credit, transient credit, Course Credit by

Examination, Independent Study coursework, etc., for which the initial registration occurred prior to application to the Specialized Studies program.

3. Complete 30 - 50 hours in the selfdesigned Area of Concentration approved by the Bachelor of Specialized Studies review committee. At least 50 percent of the coursework taken for the B.S.S. Area of Concentration must be completed at Ohio University.

4. Complete the University General Education requirements.

5. Complete the minimum of 32 hours of Ohio University coursework to satisfy the University residency requirement.

6. Earn at least a 2.0 GPA in the Area of Concentration and overall.
