Winter-Spring 2012

2011 Diabetes Foundation honors presented at DFI Awards Dinner, Dancing for Diabetes Dr. Stephen H. Schneider 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award Dr. Stephen H. Schneider, Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, was presented with the Diabetes Foundation 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize his contributions to the field of Diabetes treatment. Honorees of this award are chosen based on their dedication to the specialty of diabetes in NJ and their impact on the field. Dr. Schneider has demonstrated a lifetime of contributions to the practice of diabetes by an unparalleled commitment to professionalism, leadership, and service, which has established him as an inspiration and role model throughout the specialty. Dr. Schneider’s contributions include a long list of involvement with organizations that work to help those suffering from this common disease. A New Jersey native, Dr. Schneider studied at Boston University where he continued to pursue an endocrine fellowship and become a member of the faculty. There, he oversaw the Thorndike Clinical Research Center, where he developed a specific interest in Diabetes and exercise interactions. He and his colleagues at Thorndike were the first to publish data showing improved HGBA1C with regular exercise and suggest impaired aerobic metabolism as a contributor to insulin resistance and the development of diabetes. This information has been crucial in programs involving maintenance and prevention of the disease, which is consistent with the mission of the Diabetes Foundation to educate those at risk or suffering from the disease about positive lifestyle choices. Dr. Schneider is also a cofounder of the International Diabetic Athletes Association and the Council on Exercise of the American Diabetes Association, of which he served as chairman for two terms. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Schneider by a previous winner of the Physician of the Year award, Dr. Louis Amorosa.

Dr. Marc I. Sandberg 2011 Physician of the Year Award Dr. Marc I. Sandberg, MD, FACP, CDE was presented with the 2011 Physician of the Year Award to recognize his contributions to the field of Diabetes treatment. Honorees of this award are chosen based on their involvement in community affairs, their consistency in providing patients with compassionate, comprehensive, and caring medicine, and their reputation as a role model both professionally and personally to other health professionals, residents, and medical students. Dr. Sandberg is currently medical director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Associates of Hunterdon and the Center for Nutrition, as well as a clinical assistance professor at Temple University’s Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Sandberg chose his specialty when, during his third-year of internal medicine rotation, he was mentored by endocrinologist, Dr. Alan Marks. Dr. Marks and his late wife, Dr. Dawn Marks, persuaded Sandberg to pursue endocrinology. Dr. Sandberg’s first position was at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans where he was introduced to clinical research and was given the opportunity to teach his peers and endocrinology fellows. As much as he loved New Orleans, Dr. Sandberg returned to New Jersey with hopes of recreating a smaller version of Ochsner’s endocrine department, which included a diabetes center, at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, New Jersey. This was a huge undertaking, but with the support of CEO, Robert Wise, and director, Carolyn Swithers, Hunterdon Medical Center can now even better serve its community through their hard work and dedication. Today, Dr. Sandberg’s practice includes four endocrinologists, education for health care providers, clinical research, and a large variety of endocrinology and diabetes patients. The Physician of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Sandberg by President and CEO of Hunterdon Healthcare System, Robert Wise.

John J. “Jack” Daniels IV with 2011 Executive of the Year Award Local businessman and co-owner of one of the nationally leading Porsche, Audi, VW and Kia dealerships, John J. “Jack” Daniels IV, was named the Diabetes Foundation’s 2011 recipient of the Executive of the Year Award. Honorees of this award are chosen based on their demonstration of entrepreneurial and creative thinking, exemplary leadership and professional integrity, commitment to community, advocacy for the well-being of members of the community, and their contributions to the Diabetes Foundation. Jack Daniels is a familiar name in Bergen County. New Jersey residents have come to associate Jack Daniels Motors with luxury vehicles. However, Jack has established a name for himself through his involvement in the community as well. Jack and his brother Michael have dedicated their business careers to carrying on the strong level of commitment to success and integrity instilled by their late father. Jack supports and participates with various community organizations, such as The Most Blessed Sacrament Church and School, Don Bosco Prep, as well as over twenty years of involvement with the Diabetes Foundation of New Jersey. The Diabetes Foundation Annual 911 Porsche Carrera raffle is one of the largest fundraisers for the organization. Many of the tickets sold are at the Annual New York Auto Show, and thanks to Jack Daniels Motors, the Diabetes Foundation is able to have a presence there. In addition to the Porsche raffle, Jack Daniels Motors also supports the annual Golf Outing, and has provided a hole-in-one car and recently expanded to provide a closest to the pin car. Jack was named Diabetes Foundation 2011 Executive of the Year at the Diabetes Foundation’s Awards Dinner by DFI Board of Trustees member, Joseph Faherty. Due to illness, Jack was unable to attend. His brother, Michael, was present to accept the award and speak on his behalf.

Learn From An “A1C Champion”! Wednesday, March 7, 2012 7:00 PM Paramus Life Safety Building, 2nd Floor - Carlough Drive, Paramus What is my A1C level and why is it important? The A1C test is a common blood test used to diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and to gauge how well you're managing your diabetes. The results reflect your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months. The higher your A1C level, the poorer your blood sugar control. And if you have been previously diagnosed with diabetes, the higher the A1C level, the higher your risk of diabetes complications. About the program Through motivating stories and education from fellow diabetics who have successfully managed their own blood sugar levels, the A1C Champions® program connects with diabetes patients of all ages. Information is presented patient-to-patient, encouraging everyone to connect through shared experiences. Topics include defining A1C and why it matters, important reasons to control blood sugar, setting diabetes management goals and more. Get motivated to make positive healthy lifestyle choices and reach your own blood sugar goals! ***Location Information: Building is part of the Paramus City Complex/Boro Hall-between Century Rd. and Carlough Dr., right off of Rt. 17 North. PROTECT yOuR KIDNEyS The kidneys clean your blood. Their main job is to remove the waste or things in your blood that can make you sick if you don’t get rid of them. People with diabetes have a higher risk or chance of having kidney disease. A problem with your kidneys can cause serious health problems that are hard to control.

What can you do? You can help stop kidney problems before they start if you: • Control your blood sugar every day • Control your blood pressure • Be active and eat healthy foods in the right amounts • Have a urine protein (kidney) test once a year • Control your weight or get help to lose weight • Don’t smoke! • Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day • Take all the medicine you are supposed to take every day Talk to your doctor or diabetes educator for more information

Kidney disease is also called a “hidden” health problem. Why? Because there is often no sign of a kidney problem until it is too late.

Tips for a HealTHy 2012 A new year is always a good time to come up with resolutions to better your life for the future. Why not use your resolution this year to set goals to better your diabetes management and overall health? Your diabetes management goals for the New Year should be specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and time-limited. Gillian Arathuzik, R.D., C.D.E., Nutrition Diabetes Educator, at Joslin Diabetes Center, reviews some examples of annual and daily goals for diabetes management to set for yourself this New Years:

Annual Goals See your physician 2 to 4 times a year. Follow your schedule for checking blood glucose levels. Follow exact instructions for every dia betes medications you take. Know and keep these numbers in check: A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol. Get a renal function test and microalbumin test each year. Get moving. Any form of physical activity is a step in the right direction. Create a well-balanced meal plan with your diabetes educator. Have a yearly eye exam.

about Whole Grains Whole grain is grain the way nature made it. It has not been changed in any way. Why are whole grains good for you? Eating whole grains as part of your meal plan can: • help you lose weight • lower "bad" cholesterol • increase "good" cholesterol • help you control your blood sugar What foods are high in whole grains? Oatmeal, whole-grain cereals, barley, brown and wild rice, whole-grain tortillas, whole wheat, and oats are only some of the many foods high in whole grains. How much whole grain should I eat? Eating at least three servings of whole-grain foods a day is a good goal for most people. A serving should contain about 16 grams (16g) of whole grain.

See your dentist twice a year. Get a flu shot in the fall. Daily Goals Check blood glucose X times a day (depending on what your physician suggests). Take all diabetes-related medications. Examine your feet for cuts and sores. Bathe with mild soap and lukewarm water. Brush and floss your teeth. Always be prepared for a low or high blood glucose reaction - know the warning signs. From www.joslin.org

Examples of food servings with 16 grams of whole grain include: • 1⁄2 cup of cooked oatmeal • 1⁄2 cup of cooked brown rice • 1⁄2 cup of whole-wheat pasta Refined grains are not whole grains. Foods made with refined grains, such as white bread and baked goods like cookies, vitamins and rolls, are often high in calories. They also raise blood sugar more quickly than whole-grain foods. Read food labels when you shop. Foods high in whole grains usually list “whole grain”’ as the first item of the contents. Always talk to your doctor or diabetes educator before you make any changes in your meal plan.

Hidden sugars and Diabetes

Many foods contain more sugar than you think. Eating foods high in sugar makes it harder for you to manage your diabetes, which may cause serious health problems. Here is a list of commonly eaten foods that are high in sugar.* =1 teaspoon of sugar or 4 carb grams

Your goal with diabetes is to keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. One way to do this is to avoid eating foods high in sugar. Read food labels carefully when you shop. They are there to help you!

*Carbs and calories shown are averages. All numbers rounded.

DFI TAKES PART IN NYSE CLOSING BELL Executive Director, Roberta Schmidt, and Board of Trustees President, Michael Sullivan took part in the New York Stock Exchange Closing Bell Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2011. In appreciation of their continual financial support and working relationship with Camp Nejeda, the Diabetes Foundation was asked to share the podium for this timehonored tradition. The DFI provides funding to send needy children from the tri-state area to Camp Nejeda, a co-ed diabetes camp in Sussex County, NJ. The opportunity to spend time with peers, enjoy traditional camp activities and learn more about how to take care of their condition has an enormous positive impact on the lives of children with diabetes – a few weeks of not feeling “different” than anyone else.
