For those with a head for heights, the North Star should be at the top of your to-do list. This jewel-shaped, elevated viewing capsule lifts you 300ft into the air, allowing you to see for miles in all directions. Not only is it a wonderful way to spot future ports as you approach them, it gives you an incredible bird’s-eye view of the ship below.

• TOP TIP Book your spot early to get the times you want, particularly if you want to catch sunrise or sunset — these are of course the most popular.

ACTIVITIES

SEAPLEX

RIPCORD BY iFLY®

/ $ |

/ $ FLIGHTS | $ PRIVATE LESSONS

For all the fun of the fair, Quantum Class ships have introduced the SeaPlex — a bright and futuristic space that transforms from sports and games by day to music and dancing by night. Take a whirl on the first ever dodgems at sea, or play a few games of basketball. Then after dark, slip on your dancing shoes — or roller skates — and take to the floor, as the lights go down and the disco lights come up. • DID YOU KNOW? The SeaPlex is the largest indoor active space at sea.

CIRCUS SCHOOL

SPORTS COURT

If you’re looking for something a little different, it’s tough to beat a circus school. You can learn juggling, take on the lyra hoops or tackle the flying trapeze. Yes, really. It’s a unique, and of course fun, take on holiday entertainment.

For some friendly competition, the SeaPlex doubles as a full-sized sports court. Basketball, football and more are all on the menu, and the ocean vista backdrop makes this one game of five-a-side you won’t forget in a hurry.

DODGEMS

TABLE TENNIS

There’s fun for all the family with this fairground favourite. And it’s the first time dodgems have been onboard a ship.

Fancy something active where you don’t have to run around? Grab a paddle for a table tennis battle, on one of the full-sized tables on the Mezzanine level.

ROLLER-SKATING For a hilarious evening’s entertainment, the full-sized sports court converts into a roller disco by night. Grab your leg-warmers and relive your teenage years (or embarrass your teenager). 12

ROYALCARIBBEAN.CO.UK

If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like to fly, this is your chance — in complete safety. This exhilarating skydiving simulator means you can experience the thrill of weightlessness, as powerful jets hold you up. The whole thing takes place in a 23ft tall glass flight chamber, so you can fly and take in the ocean views at the same time. It’s also surrounded by a viewing platform so friends and family can see you having the time of your life. Classes start hourly, but booking is still advised to ensure you get the spot that suits you.

ROCK WALL / $ |

This is your chance to ride a wave without leaving the ship. At the FlowRider® surf simulator, you can hang loose and pretend you’re right there with the best of them on Bondi Beach. There are lessons available for total beginners, but you can just surf like a pro or body board and enjoy the water rushing past you on all sides. Like, totally radical, man.

A perennial favourite and Royal Caribbean hallmark, the Rock Wall is a great way to spend an afternoon and the perfect activity for all the family. Scale the colourful stones and take in amazing views from 40ft above deck — and if you get to the top, make sure you ring the bell so everyone knows you’ve made it to the summit.

Don your swimwear and get ready for some laughs at the H2O Zone — an outdoor water play park filled with colourful statues and fountains that shoot water from all angles. Sure to be a hit with the kids, adults can join in the fun or just supervise from the sun loungers.

Another activity you might not expect at sea, now you can practice your swing while you sail. There’s mini-golf for lighthearted fun, and also a golf simulator where you can hone your skills on a virtual golf course. Clubs are provided too, so there’s no need to pack light.

AND FOR THE KIDS? FlowRider® and the H2O Zone are great fun for all the family, but parents might like to know that Royal Caribbean also offer a host of great activities specifically dedicated to kids and teens. The Royal Babies & Tots nursery will take care of your littlest ones, while the Adventure Ocean® Youth Programme caters for ages 3–11, and the Teen Programme ensures that 12–17 year olds have their own spaces. All this, plus exclusive features from DreamWorks, means the kids might not even want to come home. Find out more on pages 30–37.

ENTERTAINMENT

TWO70°

ANTHEM OF THE SEAS TAKES ENTERTAINMENT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL, INTRODUCING FIRST-EVER INNOVATIONS, GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY AND WORLD FIRSTS AT SEA. FROM INTERACTIVE DANCING ROBOTS TO WEST END-CALIBRE SHOWS, THERE ARE PLENTY OF SURPRISES IN STORE.

18

ROYALCARIBBEAN.CO.UK

Two70° is the stage for a futuristic approach to entertainment that pairs advanced technology with dancers, singers and musicians. During the day, light streams in through two and a half decks of glass which stretch 270° (hence the name). It’s a great place to sit with a coffee or enjoy a spot of lunch while taking in the panoramic views, and it’s also well worth rolling up at cocktail hour to catch the magnificent sunsets. At night the vibe of the place completely changes. The ocean views are replaced by state-of-the-art video projections, robotics and live performers. This is a totally new entertainment experience which has never been seen before on land, let alone at sea.

ENTERTAINMENT

ROBOSHOW

CREATING THE ROBOSHOW

VIRTUAL CONCERT

Vistarama transforms Two70° ’s floor to ceiling ocean views into any scene, real or imagined. 18 projectors combine to create an ambient surface over 100ft wide and over 20ft tall. In seconds, you could find yourself transported to outer space, a tropical rainforest or even New York City. It’s when you see tropical fish swim past your eyes, that you realise that Vistarama is something really rather special.

Another new innovation from Royal Caribbean, six Roboscreens® descend from the ceiling on huge robotic arms. Measuring over seven feet each, they move around with astonishing agility and even dance with the live performers. The Roboscreens® will make surprise appearances throughout your holiday, so keep an eye out for them.

When Royal Caribbean decided they wanted to put robots on their ships, they knew they’d be pushing the very boundaries of science and technology. Working together with ABB Robotics, they developed one of the most complex robotics projects on the planet.

It sounds like a live concert — it just doesn’t look like one. Top musicians and bands are beamed onto all six Roboscreens® to create a multi-sensory musical experience. The screens are mesmerising to watch and no matter where you are in the room, you’ll always get a great view of the band.

• TECH FACT Vistarama features a staggering 12k resolution that is nearly twice as much as that of an Imax cinema.

• TECH FACT The only other robotic project as complex as Roboscreens® can be found on Mars.

Created by Andy ‘Robot’ Flessan, the Roboscreens® are connected to robotic arms and attached to a moveable gantry hidden in the ceiling. The Roboscreens® descend and are programmed to soar and twist solo, plus join together to form one large screen. The addition of live performers to interact with the Roboscreens® creates a fully 3D dynamic experience. Royal Caribbean is truly leading the way when it comes to entertainment.

ENTERTAINMENT

ROYAL THEATRE

MUSIC HALL

Anthem of the Seas has its very own theatre, hosting premium performances with West End production values. The technology is advanced, the productions slick and the applause loud. Turn up early for the best seats in the house, or alternatively reserve tickets before you sail through your Cruise Planner, or onboard through your stateroom TV or the Box Office. Each show will play several times throughout your stay, so there’ll be ample opportunity to see it. Find out what’s on before you cruise by checking the Cruise Planner, and when you’re away, you’ll see the entertainment line-up in the Cruise Compass, on your stateroom TV and on the wayfinder digital signage. All shows are included in the price of your holiday.

The Music Hall has been designed to give people a more intimate experience with live music. The acoustics are great and the music covers all sorts of genres, so you’ll want to check regularly to see what’s on. The Music Hall is also a venue for themed events, and at night the DJs get everyone moving on the dance floor. Head upstairs to the upper level, if you want to chill out with a couple of drinks or shoot some pool.

• TECH FACT The theatre is fully equipped with lifts, flying scenery, LED lighting, a 47ft-wide LED video wall and surround sound.

The Music Hall is the place to go if you want to see some great tribute bands playing music from every era. Close your eyes and you’ll think you’re at a concert with your favourite band.

ACCOMMODATION

FAMILY CONNECTED STATEROOMS Royal Caribbean has come up with the completely new idea of Family Connected Staterooms. This means that families and friends can now connect up through three different types of adjoining staterooms, to create a unique home base at sea. The bedrooms are all separate and everyone gets their own bathroom, so that puts an end to queues in the morning. What’s ingenious about this is that you can all be together as a family, but if you want some quiet time alone, all you have to do is close the door. This is a great option if you want to make the most of your time on holiday with your family.

WHETHER THIS IS YOUR FIRST CRUISE OR YOU'RE A SEASONED SAILOR, THERE ARE ALWAYS THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW WHEN GOING ON HOLIDAY. WE'VE PULLED TOGETHER ANSWERS TO SOME QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT FIND YOURSELF ASKING WHEN GETTING READY FOR YOUR CRUISE. 62

ROYALCARIBBEAN.CO.UK

With so much onboard, you might wonder how you’ll ever find anything. So you’ll be reassured to learn that Anthem of the Seas boasts a nifty ‘digital wayfinding’ system, which makes getting about an experience in itself. These state-of-the-art screens can be found all over the ship, and feature an interactive digital map so you can find your way around with ease. You can also use the wayfinders to book tables at restaurants, see what activities are in the mix, and get directions back to your stateroom — if you do ever find yourself actually lost onboard, that is!

CRUISE COMPASS This is a handy printed schedule of the day, showing all the activities and events happening onboard, including times and locations so you can easily find whatever you’re looking for. A new Cruise Compass is delivered directly to your stateroom on each day of your cruise.

TRAVEL TIPS

ONBOARD CURRENCY SEAPASS CARD

PRE-PAID GRATUITIES

LEGAL DRINKING AGE

To pay for anything onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship you need a SeaPass. This multi-purpose card acts as your onboard ID, stateroom/suite key and charge card for any onboard purchases. You can set it up online before you leave, or at the pier when you arrive for check-in.

Gratuities, or tips, are standard on Royal Caribbean ships, but can be pre-paid before you sail. If you decide not to pre-pay, an automatic charge of $12.00 per guest per day (or $14.25 if you are staying in a Grand Suite) will be added to your SeaPass account. Any beverage, mini-bar, spa or salon purchases made while onboard include an additional gratuity charge of 15%.

On Royal Caribbean International® cruises, the default minimum age for purchasing and consuming alcohol is 21 years old. However, for sailings departing from European ports, the minimum age is 18.

Your SeaPass can be registered to a credit card — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Optima Discover and Diner’s Card are all accepted — or set up as a cash account, although there are daily spending limits on cash accounts depending on your cruise duration. You can set up a master account and add guests from your own and even other staterooms, or alternatively, guests in the same stateroom can each register individual accounts linked to their own credit card. • REMEMBER All charges made onboard Royal Caribbean ships are in US Dollars, regardless of the departure port or destinations.

ALCOHOL

ROYALCARIBBEAN.CO.UK

Royal Caribbean pride themselves on the premium level of service offered onboard — it’s known as Gold Anchor Service®, and you’ll find it everywhere you go. So, in the extremely unlikely event you felt the service you received on any occasion didn’t warrant the tip, just visit Guest Services, who’ll be more than happy to help.

BRINGING ALCOHOL ONBOARD When you first board the ship, it’s fine to bring your own alcohol onboard, but this is limited to two 75cl bottles of wine or champagne per stateroom (not per guest). Note that you carry unauthorised alcohol at your own risk — if it gets confiscated, you won’t get it back. You can consume your own alcohol in your stateroom free of charge, but if you want to drink it elsewhere — say, in a restaurant or lounge — there’s a $25 corkage fee. If you buy alcohol while visiting a port, you won’t be able to consume these onboard, but they’ll be stored by the ship and delivered to your stateroom on your last day.

SMOKING POLICY Smoking is only allowed in specially designated areas, and never in your stateroom or on your balcony. There’s a substantial fine if you break this rule, so if you smoke, it’s worth familiarising yourself with the smoking areas once you board. Signs to these zones are posted around the ship, but if you have trouble finding them just consult your Cruise Compass or go to Guest Services, who will be able to point you in the right direction. You must be at least 18 years old to use, have or purchase tobacco onboard, and remember always dispose of your smoking products responsibly — never throw them overboard.

Royal Caribbean can accommodate most diets, including gluten-free, Kosher, low-fat and low-sodium, and those involving allergies. It should also be noted that swimwear is not considered acceptable dining attire in any of the onboard restaurants.

If you have very specific dietary requirements, you must let Royal Caribbean know at least 45 days before you sail, so provisions can be made. This includes any requests for lactosefree or soy milk, Ensure and Kosher meals — all available at no extra charge. For religious observances (eg. Passover), special meals must be requested 90 days ahead of sailing. You can bring food your own food onboard, but only dry or non-perishable items like biscuits, crackers and crisps, or baby food. Infant formula won’t be provided onboard.

You can also connect via Wi-Fi enabled devices like tablets and smartphones. To use the internet on your own device, you’ll need to purchase a Wi-Fi package, which you can do onboard.
