PEACE OF

String! ARTIST FROM NEWPORT

Angela Allen

1. Tell us about your work:

Peace of String celebrates the art of textiles. I use new, reclaimed and recycled fabric, fibers, yarns and notions to craft beautiful, usable items for your home, for you to wear, and to support your own creativity. I’m primarily a weaver and hand spinner but I’m not shy about working in any textile or fiber medium that catches my interest. I do a lot of mix-media art as well.

2. Is there a story behind the name of your business?

‘Peace of String’ comes from the slow, quiet process of creating with fiber. The physical actions while working on a piece can be repetitive and it’s incredibly meditative and peaceful.

3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer?

Like many artists I never came to the creative lifestyle; it’s just always been a part of my daily life. In the act of creating something that interests me, I produce more items than I can use so I list those in an Etsy shop for sale. I also believe that having quality items to use in everyday life adds to the charm and beauty of living. I believe people should use what they love now and not put it away for someday.

4. Where do you draw your inspiration?

Inspiration for me comes from color. I almost always start something based on the color and texture that’s currently intriguing me. I let the fiber suggest what it should be made into.

5. What’s your favorite item to create?

By far my strongest interest is in re-using or ‘upcycling’ fiber into useable items again. Tons of textiles are thrown away every day – tons! So I do my best to use recycled fibers and fabrics as much as possible while keeping my studio waste to a minimum. To that end, I’d say weaving rag rugs out of discarded plastic grocery bags or recycling bed sheets into rag rugs in my favorite item. 8

Did you ever consider how dogs can contribute to a healthy life? They can have a beneficial impact on both physical and mental well-being.

te

Dogs love to get out and exercise in the fresh air. Join your pup for a walk, run or game of ball and you benefit too. Looking into your dog’s eyes naturally causes us to release a hormone called oxytocin which creates positive feelings of bonding and love. These feelings are good for you! Dogs also help reduce negative emotions associated with anxiety and depression.

You don’t need a dog or a pet to be healthy of course. But it can help! We can learn a lot from our animal friends. Sometimes we get excessively hung up on the effects of diet and forget to relax, trust and enjoy life more. What we eat does matter. But all the pieces of our lives are interconnected. For example, have you ever noticed that when you’re in a regular routine of exercising that you find healthy eating comes more naturally? When we do something good for ourselves it has a ripple effect. If you’re struggling or stuck with the eating/food piece of your life, take a step away from that for a bit and really take a look at another area of your life that may be out of balance. Shift your focus from the food to another realm of self-care and see what happens. •

3 OUTFITS I BOUGHT FOR MY NEW JOB

T’S CASUAL… BUSINESS CASUAL.

When I was first offered my new job at the end of last year, I was obviously happy and excited and proud and all of those other positive emotions that go with landing a major opportunity and significant life change. But at the same time, the new company’s business casual dress code gave my heart a little pang of dread. My previous job essentially had no dress code, which meant that as long as you didn’t show up to work in a bikini or a neckline that dropped to your navel, you could wear whatever you wanted. I’m a jeans and sneakers girl, so that’s what I wore. I’ve never had the need to dress up for work before, except when I worked at Michael Kors (but those clothes were provided to us). Over the years I did think about upping my workwear game a bit, but always came to the same conclusion: work clothes are terrible. This opinion was mainly driven by the fact that I love pants, and had never been successful at finding a pair of work pants that didn’t somehow give me both the appeal of a Walmart mannequin and the comfort level of someone going to Walmart at 4pm Thanksgiving Eve.

Because of this conundrum, as soon as my offer letter arrived I ventured into the dress zone with an adorable plaid number from J. Crew (pictured above, now sold out, sorry!) that actually came in tall sizes, woohoo! This dress has some serious ’70s librarian vibes and can easily be layered with a turtleneck or button down for even more nerdy sartorial goodness. It was a little bit of an impulse buy, but I knew I had to have it as soon as I saw it. I haven’t gotten a chance to wear it yet, because that would require baring legs in what has been either -20 degrees or freezing rain, but I’ll get there once the weather starts to get a little warmer. Above I paired it with a thin knit turtleneck sweater (from the J. Crew Factory store), some classic black pumps from M. Gemi, and a few wrinkles. What can I say? You can’t win ’em all.

Next I ended up buying a crew neck cashmere sweater and a knit polo from the J. Crew men’s section. I’ve always been a big fan of shopping in the men’s section because 1) they run bigger/longer and are therefore more comfortable and fit me better 2) you’re more likely to find a simple/timeless style in the men’s section and 3) sometimes they are cheaper. Yup, the pink tax is real, people. Check out a J. Crew “V neck boyfriend sweater in everyday cashmere” for $128 versus the …. actual V-neck cashmere sweater you would steal from your would-be boyfriend for $98. You don’t always see it for every style, but there can be an opportunity to save some money. Then, having reaffirmed my position on the J. Crew mailing list several times, I got an email saying they were making a high rise version of their Cameron pant. This seemed promising; in a perfect world my work wardrobe would look like Audrey Hepburn’s dancing ensemble in Funny Face, but I had yet to find the right pants. I ordered a pair in the tall length in black and navy. When they arrived I fell in love

with them so much I ordered them in the regular length (cropped on me/for wearing with flats) in black, navy, and grey. My pants quota has been filled! Filled to the brim! Just look at them! They are so comfortable and have some stretch to them too, which is great. I can’t recommend them enough. The last look wasn’t one that I bought, so much as discovered. I had all of the pieces, but had never paired them together to create such a perfect casual Friday look. It’s actually a pretty cliche office outfit when you look at the template, but the whimsical sweater and pompoms on my shoes help make it a little funky and unique. And that’s it! What do you guys think? What do you like to wear to the office?

2018 Chevrolet suburban

auto

The 2018 Chevy Suburban is a large, capable SUV that can transport up to 8 people, can tow a trailer, transport a ton of cargo, or rough it through some pretty difficult trails. And the surprising thing is that it can do most of that all at the same time. Well, maybe not while towing a trailer‌. but certainly everything else.

APRIL 2018 O CEANSTATE 29

The Suburban is one of the few SUV’s that’s built on the chassis of a truck, and then has the body attached to a separate frame. It carries over the truck suspension, and really that’s why it can haul and tow what it can. Suburban offers good fuel economy for its size at 23 mpg highway. That’s nearly identical to its little brother, the Chevy Tahoe. But the suburban adds length that’s not found in the Tahoe, and that’s where the cargo and passenger capability come into the equation. With the extra room, you can fit up to eight (depending on seating configurations) and still have room behind the third row for plenty of gear. There’s a new RST version, which stands for Rally Sport Truck. It’s a new appearance option for 2018 and comes with black trim and 22-inch

alloy wheels available for LT and Premier models. The Suburban has a long history, starting way back in 1935, and the current version was introduced in 2015, and is the 11th generation. That change was a major restyle for both the exterior and interior, and has won accolades for its style, functionality and versatility. New for the 2015 redesign was a direct-injected 5.3-liter V8 EcoTec3 with aluminum block and heads producing 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a silky smooth six-speed automatic transmission that works in perfect harmony with the powerful V8. The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban and all the entire Chevrolet lineup is available at Cerrone Chevrolet-Buick-GMC in Attleboro Mass.•
