Prune prudently, and don’t commit ‘crape murder’! it too late to prune my Q:Iscrape myrtle tree? It is sort

of a small tree, and I am not sure if I need to prune it or not. In North Central Florida, we usually prune crape myrtle (if needed) in January or February, so you still have time to prune your tree. If the tree is small, you may not need to prune at all. Generally, we prune to maintain the size and shape as well as to increase flowering. Crape myrtle produce flowers on the new growth, so a latewinter pruning for them is fine. When you prune this month, evaluate the shape of the tree: Do you want a multi-trunk tree or a single-trunk tree? Since your tree is small, you can easily correct any problems with the shape or the growth habit of the tree. If you want a multi-trunked specimen, select the three or four strongest trunks and prune the smaller side suckers down to the ground. This will provide more vigor to the primary trunks. Do not over-prune the top of the tree or commit “crape murder.” Everybody has seen

‘SUITE’ RETREAT Bedroom now has a functional yet luxurious design ue and Shouvik are a busy young couple with full-time jobs, a 2-year-old son, and a newborn baby. Life is hectic, and these two need a place to escape the daily hustle and bustle. But, although their master bedroom is huge, they struggle with trying to lay out their furniture in this oddly-shaped room. Sue is a shopaholic and Shouvik is a hoarder, so the walk-in closet is bursting at the seams with clothing, shoes and accessories. To compensate, they’ve added various cabinets throughout the space to address the lack of storage. They’re desperate for a design that is functional yet luxurious, pulling together all of the room’s elements into one designer look. At the end of the day, Sue and Shouvik are looking for an adult retreat that is reminiscent of a boutique hotel suite. To begin, we upgraded their queen bed to a king-sized bed, perfect for family time on Sunday mornings. We reposi-

tioned the bed to another wall. The ebony fabric makes the wall recede, and a three-piece triptych photo of the Brooklyn Bridge at night is attached to hidden brackets, making it appear to “float” against the gauzy backdrop. The most eye-catching piece in this master bedroom makeover is a unique ethanol fireplace, encased in a white dresser that is opposite the foot of the bed. The clean-burning ethanol flames add romance and warmth to this bedroom retreat, with the added bonus of more attached storage. Part of the problem with Sue and Shouvik’s old bedroom was a lack of storage. To fix this, I decided to create an open-concept dressing room with an island to hold jewelry, socks, ties and laundry hampers. The custom marbletopped island is the hardest-working

I was a professional actor for 40 years, and this picture depicts Hamlet’s Castle at Elsinore, Denmark. So, it is priceless to me, naturally. I have been told it is a Flemish painting. It was purchased, according to pencil writing on the back, in 1901, in a European town which is unreadable to me. It looks to be, maybe, Danish or Swedish. The only allusion to identity of the artist are the initials “A.S.” in the lower, left corner in the front. It seems to have been painted on some kind of thin pressboard. So, I am really unsure if it is very old or not. It looks like it could use a cleaning and frame repair work. Since it was from a museum

Recent cold weather prompts an explanation of how heat pumps work McClatchy-Tribune

ue to the recent cold, polar vortex weather, I have received several questions concerning heat pumps. It seems the readers’ homes are cooler than normal, and the outside unit of the heat pump/air conditioner runs continuously. The basic question is why is the house is so cold, and is there anything they can do about it? A heat pump is similar to an air conditioner, but runs in reverse in the winter. In the summer, the outside condensing coil releases heat that was absorbed at the interior evaporative coil. In the

winter there is a reversing valve incorporated into the outside unit that reverses the flow of the refrigerant allowing latent heat to be brought in from the outside air. When the outside temperature falls below about 20 degrees, the heat pump is less efficient, and when it’s really cold outside there is almost no latent heat for the heat pump to use. This is when you’ll have to manually

turn the furnace on. Homes with a heat pump will have a backup system to heat the home with either electricity or fossil fuels. When the home’s thermostat is set to heat and the heat pump is running in extremely cold weather, you are wasting the energy it takes to run the heat pump. It will not heat the home in extremely cold weather. The thermostat should have a switch for “Heat.” The same switch can be adjusted to “Supplemental,” “Emergency” or “Auxiliary” heat. Manufacturers have different wording on the

thermostats, but the purpose is to eliminate the heat pump and to turn the furnace on. If the outside unit is not equipped with an outside thermostat that automatically turns the heat pump “off” and the furnace to “on,” then you will have to switch the furnace on manually every time there is extremely cold weather. With an electric furnace there are electrical heating strips or coils that can burn in two, and sequencers that can fail to allow each heating element to come on in sequence. If switching the thermostat to emergency heat does not work,

call a licensed HVAC (heating venting air conditioning) contractor to service the units. You should be able to see the flames of a working fossil-fueled furnace. When any furnace begins to heat after sitting all summer, there will be an odor as the accumulated dust burns off the heating elements. After a few minutes the odors should dissipate. Removing more than one-third of the plant at any given pruning is stressful for the tree. I know it is time to treat the trouble spots in my St. Augustine lawn for crabgrass. While I was out shopping for a weed killer, I noticed a product that was made of cinnamon bark that said it would kill crabgrass. Do you think it will work? February is the month to apply a pre-emergence weed killer for crabgrass. Crabgrass is an annual weed that doesn’t start sprouting until the summer. So, if you had a crabgrass

problem last year, treat with a pre-emergent herbicide in February to prevent the germination of the seeds. Quick reviews of the cinnamon-bark product lead me to believe it is used on green and growing crabgrass, and doesn’t have any preemergent effect on the seeds. The product information states that with a couple applications, it will get rid of the crabgrass. An extension agent colleague in South Florida tested the product last year and found that the cinnamon-bark herbicide only burned the top of the crabgrass, and the plant re-sprouted from the roots. I really like the idea of a natural approach for this recurring summer weed, so maybe the formula can be improved. In the meantime, treat your crabgrass trouble spots with an herbicide that contains pendamethalin (Halts crabgrass killer or Pendulum) to keep the crab at bay. The reason for my miss was that my father was placed in Hospice care last Monday and finished his physical life of 91 years on Friday January 31st. Of course we should all be blessed for what we have and I can certainly say my family has been blessed over the years. My parents have been married for 66 years and have always provided my brother, sister and I with a wonderful home life. They were small business owners and were always looking forward instead of backwards and were smart enough to learn from both their mistakes and successes. I was reminded a few weeks ago at a meeting that the first five words of the Preamble of the Realtor Code of Ethics is "Under all is the land" and though my father may have not have said those exact words he did say too many times to count "buy property because they are not making any more of it and it will always be more valuable than a piece of paper." My parents for as long as I can remember always bought homes, land and commercial properties. They would fix the homes up and sell them and usually even hold the mortgage in most cases when the families credit was not up to bank standards because they felt having a home was key to a families success . They believed in the power of investing in real estate, providing a good home to raise a family and planning for the future. I have memories enough to last ten lifetimes and most of them were made at home but under all of those memories is the land. Just for dad this week I am changing our 2014 Motto to "Life is great for those who make it great" and dad always did…

I’m looking to replace my bathroom faucet and will be going to the supply center soon to choose a new one. I know by reading your plumbing column that preparation is the key to having a successful day when choosing plumbing fixtures. Can you please give me some basic bathroom faucet information that may help me choose? — Donald, Ohio It’s nice to know that the message of doing some “homework” before doing some “home work” is getting around. Choosing bathroom faucets can get a little confusing because you’re usually dealing with many different categories. To keep things simple, here are three popular types of bathroom faucets and the sink faucet holes needed for each one:

If your master bath, guest bath or powder room is hovering at the Boring-ButFunctional end of the scale, it’s time transform it. Remaking the look and feel of your bathrooms is a lot easier and less expensive than you may think when use these six sure-fire tricks: 1. OPT FOR AN ARRESTING COLOR SCHEME: Take a hard look at the walls in your bath. Are they unremarkable? You can make them powerful with a few rolls of wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint. You might think that using a bright, bold wallpaper in a small powder room would be overwhelming, but strong paper patterns in small doses can score high on the wow scale. Paint is an inexpensive and easy way to transform a bath. A subdued combination of black, white and gray creates jaw-dropping drama. If you have older oak cabinets you want to freshen up, try this trick: Cover them in a highgloss whitewash and add new knobs. Then create some magic with contrasting colors on the door and ceiling. 2. I took a postage-stampsized bathroom and painted it twilight blue then covered one wall with a mix of plates and antlers, and the other wall with a grid of turn-of-thecentury portrait engravings. 3. ADD INTERESTING ARRANGEMENTS OF ACCESSORIES: From shampoo to mouthwash to bath salts, we all have lots of toiletries to work around when we decorate our bathrooms. Instead of hiding them away in a cabinet, why not create displays that make your toiletries beautiful? All you need is an assortment of lovely containers. For instance, put your bubble bath and lotions in pretty decanters and pour your bath salts into apothecary jars. Place them atop a silver tray. 4. FINISH OUT WITH FURNITURE: I love to use “real” furniture in bathrooms, even small ones, because it gives these often-for-

gotten rooms the same stature as the more public spaces in our home. If you are redoing your vanity, consider using a piece of furniture to hold the sink, instead of a generic hardware store cabinet. If you have enough room in your bath, consider adding an upholstered chair to use for dressing. 5. CREATE A MOOD WITH AMBIENT LIGHT: Whenever possible, I use ambient lighting to illuminate a room. I just prefer the soft glow they provide. A little lamp sitting on a vanity makes the room feel so warm and inviting. 6. MAKE PRACTICAL PIECES PRETTY: As much as I love creating baths that are a bastion of beauty and luxury, they also have to be practical. So outfit your new bath with tools that make daily life easier, yet are loaded with style. In my home, that meant saying goodbye to towel bars and hello to towel hooks. For some reason, my family members were unable to hang wet towels on bars, preferring to drop them on the floor. Sigh. I solved the dilemma by installing pretty hooks, so all they have to do is toss the towel. Problem solved. Another idea: Make it easy for guests to find hand towels by placing them in a simple wire basket on the back of a stool. The tub is the most sacred space in my bathroom.
