he holiday season is synonymous with tradition. But that doesn’t mean you have to fill your home with the same holiday decorations in the same color scheme every year. “Until four years ago, I was Scrooge-y when it came to holiday decorating — a result of seeing the same old thing over and over again,” says Brian Patrick Flynn, a Los Angeles-based interior designer and executive producer of HGTV.com’s “Holiday House.” But after finding ways to “reinvent the look and feel of Christmas for my own home,” Flynn says he “rediscovered how much fun seasonal styling can be when you make it your own.” Here he and another design expert, Jon Call of Mr. Call Designs, offer suggestions on shaking up holiday decorating.

Terrific trees A Christmas tree doesn’t have to stay parked in one place. Flynn recommends putting a small tree on wheels (maybe in a vintage metal wagon or an old metal washtub with casters on the bottom) so you can change its location when you’re entertaining to create space or to bring extra holiday style to a different room. Another option is ditching red and green tree decorations for an understated color palette. “This year I created a tone-ontone tree using all shades of light

gray,” Flynn says. “To do this right, it’s all about having a balance of texture, finish, shape, scale and proportion.” Try a white tree if you’ll be using light colors and neutrals, or a green tree with decorations in earth tones. To shake up your tree’s decorations, Call suggests going with a theme. “Last year for a client, I indulged in masses of vintage mercuryglass ornaments of all sizes and shapes. Silver was literally dripping off the tree. It was spectacular,” he says. “This year we are changing it up a bit and creating a completely edible tree, including childhood favorites such as homemade popcorn balls, small sacks of chocolates tied with a ribbon and hung from the branches, and pungent gingerbread.”

oday is the official start of winter, the shortest day of the year. At this point, the sun reaches its southernmost point, and beginning tomorrow, although it will be imperceptible, the days will begin to grow longer. The term “solstice” comes from the Latin words for “sun” and to “stand still,” probably because for these few days the sun seems to stand still as it reverses course. One can almost imagine a creaking of the brakes as the sun slows, grinds to a halt, then starts up again in the opposite direction. The thought of a large ship reversing course in a deep body of water comes to mind. One of the things that has always intrigued me is the movement of the sun on the horizon. Today, Dec. 21, it will rise as far south on the horizon as it is going to, and as we move toward June 21, the sun will begin to rise — and set — further to the north each day. This has an effect on the shadows and the set of the light inside the house, on the trunks of trees in the yard and wherever you observe that light strikes. For some, the beginning of winter is associated with a type of depression, perhaps because of the longer periods of darkness or the bleakness of the gray skies in northern climates. While Florida may see some cold, the skies remain largely blue, and we won’t have to deal with the ice or snow that causes problems for travel only a few miles to our north. Plants are affected by light, and these shorter days mean a period of dormancy for most plants where the growth cycle, in concert with the movement of the sun, slows to a halt. Dormancy

Established landscape plants should require no irrigation during these winter days. The goal of any managed landscape is to apply water and nutrients at the recommended rate, when the plant is actively growing — taking up all of the applied material — so none is lost to the environment. Plants also are affected by temperature and, interestingly, there is some lag time between the shortest day of the year,

today, and the lowest average daily temperature of the year, which occurs in late January. This is because the Earth’s mass still retains heat from the summer and fall days. It will continue to cool, resulting in our coldest temperatures still lying ahead, even though the amount of light received each day is growing longer. Shortly after Christmas, vegetable seed catalogues begin to arrive, and the short days of winter are a good time to make plans for the spring vegetable garden. Place orders so that seeds arrive in time to be sown in early to mid-March. Gardeners may elect to start

some plants — tomatoes and peppers for example, indoors using heat mats. Heat mats typically raise seedling flats temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above the room temperature. Monitor the growth of plants carefully, and remove plants, if needed, to avoid too much rapid growth, resulting in “leggy” transplants. The University of Florida has a good publication on the EDIS website, edis.ifas. ufl.edu, HS#507, “Starting the Garden with Transplants,” that details procedures for starting plants indoors. Landscapers also may wish to take advantage of winter dormancy to sharpen blades,

repair tools and inventory equipment in preparation for the coming spring. The cool winter days offer a good opportunity to mulch plant beds. Remember to place mulch no thicker than 3 inches deep, and keep mulch away from trunks of plants. Rake out any fallen leaves prior to applying mulch, as these can be a source of plant diseases. Destine fallen leaves for the compost bin. Remove winter weeds and check under hedges and ornamental plants for sprouting trees and smilax. These are much easier to remove when they are small, delicate plantlets as opposed to waiting until

they develop a more extensive root system. Inventory the landscape and determine areas that may need replacement or expansion during the coming spring. In northern climates, the first day of winter suggests a time to cuddle closer to the fire to await the melting of the ice and snow. For Florida gardeners, winter need not mean inactivity. For one project, Flynn displayed colorful pop art images (including a reindeer by artist Jonathan Fenske) on the TV, and then put colorful items like candy in apothecary jars and brightly colored ornaments on the mantel “to make it all pop.” Call agrees there’s no need to hold back with color: “The holidays are a time for indulgence, and that always means color to me,” he says. “Commit to a color scheme and go for broke!”

You will need gloves, a bow saw for the trunk and lopping shears to remove the branches. It’s OK to leave the tree in a bucket of water for several days until you have time to install and decorate it — but monitor the water level. If you are storing in, say, an unheated porch or garage, make sure it won’t tip or blow over. The tree is thirstiest when first cut, and will absorb several quarts of water in its first day or two. Keep a close eye on

the water level and don’t let it drop below the cut, which will gum up if it dries. When taking it indoors, make a fresh cut. Place the tree away from fireplaces and heat registers and away from doors. Make sure that your tree stand is big enough for the tree, both for stability and amount of water storage. Additives to the water are not necessary, but the level should be checked daily and topped off as needed — use your finger to check the water level. Seal the Deal - Grab some caulk and weatherstripping and make your slow journey around the house. Seal up cracks between trim and siding, around windows and door frames and where pipes and wires enter your home. 5. Eyeball your Roof - Look for warning signs- Singles that are buckled, cracked, or missing: rust spots on flashing. Any loose, damaged or missing shingles should be replaced immediately. his holiday season, you don’t have to live in Downton Abbey to sup in a dining room that’s fit for nobility. When I decorated my dining room for my annual Holiday Open House, I followed seven simple steps to infuse the space with the feel of an English manor house. 1. CLASSIC YET SIMPLE PLACE SETTINGS: When I decorate my dining room for the holidays, I pick a theme and bring it to life, starting with the place settings. While I knew I wanted this year’s table to be a nod to English style, I also wanted it to be edited, approachable. So I started simply, using a wool Tartan throw blanket as my tablecloth, instead of a more formal white tablecloth. Since the plaid table topper was rich with color and pattern, I went with a simple, classic set of dishes. One of our techniques at Nell Hill’s is to mix formal and informal together, so these unassuming chargers were a great pick to pair with this brand new Spode china pattern, which features iconic images like pheasants, deer and plaids. 2. A LAVISH BUT LIVABLE CENTERPIECE: If you know me, you know my history of going big when it comes to creating centerpieces for my holiday table. This year, I restrained myself a bit. I wanted a centerpiece that flowed throughout the table space, was loaded with drama yet loose enough to allow for

cross-table conversation. I went “shopping” in my home for pieces to use in the centerpiece, and zeroed in on the gold alter sticks I always keep on my fireplace mantel. The soft shimmer of the sticks was echoed in the etched silver ball we placed on an iron urn, resting on a nest of a pine wreath. The silver deer, tucked into the scene, were the perfect finish. 3. A CHANDELIER THAT LIGHTENS THE SPIRITS: A decorated chandelier takes a beautifully appointed room to the next level. We kept this treatment tightly tucked to the center of the chandelier, compact and powerful. We started with a mix of faux pine picks. I like how the different tones of green set each other off. The frost-covered sticks give the arrangement a wilder feel, while the symmetrical strands of ribbon keep it civil. 4. CHAIRS THAT WON’T BE UPSTAGED: While I don’t change out my dining chairs with each season, I do swap out custom seat covers when the weather turns cold, replacing the linen seats with covers made of yummy plaid. This simple switcheroo makes my dining room feel new, and it allows the chairs to do their part to contribute to the overall splendor of the room. When I entertain, I love to decorate the backs of

This year, I picked stockings we custom designed to benefit Haitian orphans served by The Global Orphan Project ( https://goproject. org/ ). I inserted a bottle of wine in each stocking, a gift of holiday cheer for guests. These stockings are fabulous decorating tools and also make perfect gifts. And every penny of profit from their sale is used by The GO Project to help orphaned and abandoned kids in Haiti. 5. SERVICE TABLES THAT SHINE: When you decorate your dining room, dress the service tables as well. I just added a three-tiered server to my dining room, in the corner usually reserved for a Christmas tree. I liked the idea of filling it full of food we couldn’t fit on the table,

saving us trips to the kitchen. A silver set holds court on my table year round, so to give it a holiday feel, I just added greens. 6. GOBS OF GORGEOUS GARLAND: All great holiday displays start with gorgeous greens. For my open house this year, I went crazy with garland, using thick ropes of faux pine to crown the tops of my interior doors, trace the lines of my banister and accent the windows in my dining room. 7. BEAUTIFUL DETAILS FINISH THE DESIGN: Sometimes when you are designing a room, it’s the last little details that provide the exclamation point, driving the space up the drama scale. Instead of just lining up bottles of wine on the buffet, we decided to let them contribute to the beauty of this room by inserting them into a blue and white cachepot holding a simple arrangement of pine picks. Who can resist the allure of a wrapped gift? I know I can’t! That’s why I like to include small take-home gifts when I decorate my dining room for entertaining. One simply wrapped gift holds chocolatedipped candy cane stirrers, perfect for a steaming cup of coffee. Take home gifts don’t cost much, but they are a sheer delight for guests. crawl space. For years, my wife has complained about our floors having too much bounce. It’s like walking on a cushion just crossing the room. I found that the floor joists are bowed sideways. Watching a new home being built in our neighborhood, I saw the builder was using I-joists for the floors, and I asked him if this was normal. The I-joists in my house are much thinner and smaller than the ones I saw. Mine are about the size of a 2-by-8-inch board. What can be done to remedy the

Ijoists, sometimes referred to as a “no squeak” floor system, are designed for minimal shrinkage and deflection. The smallest I-joist I have seen is closer to a 2-by-10inch board than a 2-by-8inch. A common 2-by-8-inch floor joist is subject to bending forces once the rooms are filled with furniture and appliances, but they very rarely bow

sideways. The amount of deflection depends on the species of wood used and the span or the length of the floor joists between supports at each end of the joists. If the span is too long, the floors can bounce or could bow to the point of structural failure. If a home has 2-by-8-inch joists, the span cannot be greater than 12 feet 7 inches when using No. 1 grade pine or fir lumber. That would be a fairly small room or a very small home. An I-joist is made from finger-jointed lumber for the top and bottom rails

with OSB (oriented strand board) for the center flange, forming an I-shaped board. The lightest weight I-joist I could find can span up to 17 feet, but they are usually installed at 15-foot to 16-foot lengths. If the I-joists are cupping, they may have been installed improperly. It could be that the subflooring is not secured to the I-joists or there is an additional load on the joists near the cupping. I would recommend you contact a structural engineer or an I-joist dealer to inspect the floor system and make recommendations for repairs. It
