this from all the rain? Also, a friend of mine told me this was an invasive plant. Is this true? Elephant ear, or Xanthosoma sagiitifoliium, is an old Florida favorite plant. This herbaceous tropical plant will certainly respond to increased moisture, and gardeners all over North Central Florida are reporting huge leaves this summer. The long rainy season helped to get the leaves to more than 5 feet in length on plants that are reaching 9 feet in height. The leaves of elephant ears are arrow shaped and light green in color. The petiole of the elephant ear attaches directly to the base of the “v” at the top of the leaf. These plants are spread by rhizomes and often become out of control and weedy. They have a large underground corm that provides nourishment to the plant, even in drought conditions. Because of the elephant ears tendency to spread out of control, especially in wetland

r. Nick works in the emergency room of a busy downtown hospital. After his shift, the doc retreats to his home for some much-needed R&R. But the peace and tranquility of Dr. Nick’s castle was shattered by a massive flood that brought 4 inches of water into his basement. After the restoration work was completed, it was our job to give this space a new lease on life. The prescription? Create a multipurpose basement fit for entertaining, relaxation and guest accommodation. Dr. Nick needed us to pack a lot of purpose into this space. He wanted a complete chill-out zone where he could entertain family and friends, enjoy his collection of fine wines, host a party and put up overnight guests in style. To transform this basement, I began by making plans to section off a self-contained bedroom suite with a room-dividing panel. I found some amazingly innovative pull-down, twin-sized wall beds that are perfect for the bedroom

area. When they’re not needed, the two beds just disappear into the wall, leaving more space to accommodate larger groups. On the other side of the remote-controlled room divider is a comfy sectional sofa facing a TV and media center. Beside that is what I like to think of as the wine bar — a warm and inviting corner equipped with a couple of white swiveling barrel chairs, a leather-topped bench for extra seating and a modern wall-mounted ethanol fireplace, featuring fire rocks instead of traditional logs. Dr. Nick is a wine connoisseur and is very proud of his extensive collection. By creating a customized feature wall, with sleek acrylic wine racks to display his wines, we really elevated wine to the level of art. Taken together, the furnishings in the “wine zone” are warm and inviting, and deliver the perfect relaxation factor for this busy ER doctor.

Dr. Nick’s waterlogged basement was dried out and needed resuscitating. Dr. Nick’s basement had a small kitchen area, which he wanted to incorporate into his new space. We didn’t have much room to work with, but with the help of spacesaving, innovative appliances and a well-planned design, we created a basement kitchen that really cooks! Instead of a traditional refrigerator, we selected two fridge drawers that pull out from underneath the counter. A stainlesssteel gas range, built-in dishwasher and other appliances will make guests feel right at home. The kitchen area has a lower ceiling due to ductwork that we incorporated into a bulkhead, so we

have between three and four generations per year, so you might even begin to see them in early summer. The pupa, or the cocoon stage, overwinters in the soil of leaf litter beneath the tree. Although they can completely consume leaves of the branches they are feeding on, very little to no permanent damage is done to the tree. Their host trees are deciduous and are going to lose their leaves later in the fall — the caterpillar just speeds the process along.

Whether it’s your livingroom coffee table, your diningroom buffet or the little tables nestled between the chairs in your den, occasional tables are a perfect place to add a tribute to this beautiful season. Bruce, one of our talented visual designers at Nell Hill’s, pulled together five creative tabletop displays to inspire you to add a flourish of fall to your own decor. 1. A POP OF PETITE PUMPKINS When decorating a side table in your living room or den, usually you don’t have a lot of surface area to work with, so consider going with a more edited, understated fall look. Bruce created a wonderful smaller-scale display that is low-profile so as not to inhibit conversation between people sitting in the side-by-side chairs. Our decorative elements start with an earthy urn holding a tumble of little pumpkins. No time to decorate? Stop here and you’ve got a splash of seasonal color that will spark up your space. Want more? Add another iconic fall element, like a wonderful wooden lantern. You could place a pumpkin or candle inside the lantern, or make the display even more colorful by letting a fall spray spill out. This great display is finished off with a bronzed fall figurine — a deer head — catching more of our warm fall tones. 2. BACK TO SCHOOL WITH STYLE Another, very different, look for a living-room side table, one with just the slightest touches of back-to-school nostalgia. A tower of old books makes a

We use lots of books in fall motifs at Nell Hill’s because they evoke images of chilly fall evenings spent by the fire, reading a great novel. For added texture, Bruce tucked in a single fall foliage pick. If you are satisfied with the existing displays on your occasional tables, adding a spray or two of fall flowers, leaves or vines is an easy and effective way to give the grouping a taste of autumn. 3. THE ROMANCE OF YESTERYEAR The browns, creams and golds of fall are so romantic, and in a lushly layered display, they blend together to create a sepia image that pulls you back in time. Bruce staged a grouping on a buffet, but you could adapt it to a desk or console table, too. He started with an intriguing backdrop, a desktop shelf holding creamy books and a pretty vase bursting with fall leaves. Artwork, silver trays or china platters propped in an easel also make ideal backdrops for tabletop displays. Another option? Stacks of baskets or old wooden boxes. We like trays, too. Trays

ground the individual elements of a display, pulling them together into one visual unit. 4. FALL FRUITS ADD FLAIR If you like a very clean, minimalist approach to seasonal decorating, consider this creation of Bruce’s. He took a gorgeous display on a side table and added one simple but arresting hint of fall. Red apples, which echo the swath of red in the artwork behind the table, become the instant focal point in the sublime creamywhite, gold and silver loveliness of the arrangement. Apothecary jars are your best friend if you want a dramatic tribute to the season but don’t want to spend more than about two minutes decorating. In the fall, fill a jar with faux red apples, pears, avocados or artichokes. As the holidays approach, switch out the contents for pine cones, gilded nuts or tree ornaments. 5. COFFEE-TABLE CREATIONS CELEBRATE SIMPLICITY Displays on coffee tables can be tricky to construct. You want to create a tableau that is scaled large enough so that it doesn’t get gobbled up on a large upholstered ottoman, say, yet not so large as to create a visual barrier that stifles conversation. Bruce grounded decorative pieces on a tray, which gave us something firm to build upon on top of the soft ottoman. And add an urn holding faux red pears. All good tabletop displays need to include a variety of heights and textures, and a tower of books holding up a crystal decanter and glasses give the vertical height we need without making the display too big and bulky. Today’s kitchen sinks are getting deeper! I have run into this issue myself when I installed a new kitchen sink of the same length and width as the old sink, only to find that the bowls were a little deeper than the previous sink’s. Deeper-sink bowls usually need lower drain lines installed under the sink for proper drainage. If you have

a garbage disposer, this can complicate matters a little more. WASHINGTON – Sept. 16, 2013 – Federal housing authorities want to make it easier for people who lost their homes due to bankruptcy or foreclosure as a result of the economic downturn five years ago to qualify for a new mortgage – sooner rather than later. You will find the washer at the base of the shaft. Replace the washer, which can be purchased at any home or hardware store. If the spigot is an anti-freeze type, the shaft will be several inches long because the washer is at the end of a long pipe that is recessed into the warmer areas of the home to prevent freezing. The same process can be used to repair leaky

bathroom faucets, but you may find a cartridge with O-rings in addition to the rubber washer. Replacement parts and cartridges can be found at home and hardware stores.
