But, say interior designers, a bit of creativity can transform a small vacation home into the perfect haven — a place to combine family heirlooms, funky flea-market purchases and a few new pieces, with style and on a budget. “Second homes are all about the three f’s: family, friends and flea markets,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn, founder of Flynnside Out Productions. “There are really no rules, but the one thing to keep in mind is that second homes are the best place to showcase your personality by filling them with one-of-a-kind pieces packed with sentiment and history.” Some ideas for getting this laidback, layered style:

Mix and match A mix of decorating styles is great; just don’t overload the space, says HGTV host Sabrina Soto. “Mixing in multiple elements can create an overwhelming and cluttered interior,” Soto says, so “avoid over-accessorizing with knickknacks and space holders.” She also advises against “grouping a certain style in one corner and the other style in another.” Go ahead and combine two plaid chairs with a floral sofa, though. Kyle Schuneman, author of “The First Apartment Book: Cool Design for Small Spaces” (Potter Style, 2012), recommends mixing the scale of the patterns but keeping the scale of the furniture the same. “So if you have a small sofa, keep the side chairs in that same scale. Then with the fabric in the room, for instance, use a small

One of the good things about vegetable gardening in North Central Florida is that we can have two seasons of tomatoes, as well as beans, eggplants, squash and peppers. The UF/IFAS Extension Vegetable Gardening Guide for North Florida recommends planting tomatoes in February, March, April and again in August. This is a great bonus to people who grow their own produce. It’s like having a second spring. Pick a site that has at least six hours of sun per day, is close to a water source and has welldrained soil. If you are going to grow the tomatoes in containers, use a pot with a volume of 5 gallons or more, and make sure there are drainage holes. Since growing tomatoes as a fall crop is a bit of a race against time, start out with transplants.

the Hollywood Hills, for instance, Flynn bought a vintage Circle K sign at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. “I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, and spent a ton of time at the Circle K on weekends” getting ready for the beach, he says. “Every time I walk past the dining room, I kind of feel that carefree, beachy feeling all over again.” A vintage item picked up for $5 can sometimes become the star of a room. “My living room walls are completely covered with flea-market art picked up for next to nothing. Blending old with new can be fun: “In my bedroom, I updated the floors with white vinyl plank and custom window treatments made from high-end Schumacher

Louis Icart, 1888-1950, was a French artist who produced a large body of etchings and paintings. His subject matter was beautiful, scantily clad or nude, sinuous, young women. The etching you have is from the Four Season series and the title is “Spring.” I am fairly sure I can make out the artist’s signature, pencil signed, in the lower right-hand margin. Icart prints are eagerly sought after by collectors. If I am correct, potential dollar value is in the $500 range.

an artist or craftsman. “Also, bringing in local flora like driftwood or maybe a stump or natural elements that bring the outside in really makes it feel like a destination home,” he says, “and for free.” If the home has a nice view of mountains or water, Flynn suggests using a monochromatic palette inside to draw the eye outside. But if there is no view, it’s “ideal for going crazy with color,” he says. “Since I love the allAmerican aesthetic, I painted my walls and ceilings a deep shade of slate blue, then used tons of red and white as accents.” Don’t have a second home? “You don’t have to actually have a second home to create that warm, well-worn, welcoming feeling” in your main home, Flynn says. “It’s all about a great edit, and just making a space that makes you forget about work, forget about bills and forget about anything else except rest and relaxation.”

range you glad orange is back in style? Some of you are nodding your heads vigorously because this friendly, high-octane color gives you the energy kick you’re longing for in home decor. Others of you are shaking your heads just as vigorously, possibly having a flashback to your ’70s kitchen plastered in sunset, harvest gold and avocado. When Pantone declared Tangerine Tango as the color of the year last year, a lot of people were skeptical. But others — like yours truly — have had a blast working this life-giving color into traditional and contemporary home design, whether it’s a drop for drama or a space saturated in one of orange’s many provocative shades. Many of our customers are loving it, too. And as autumn approaches, orange is going to play an even more important part of seasonal decor. Wanna play with orange? Here are three ways you can add a little — or a lot — to home decor. 1. ADD A SPLASH OF PAINT: When I think of orange, I think of Rich, one of our interior designers at Nell Hill’s. No one does this daring color better than Rich. He had the courage to paint the cabinets in his ’70s-era home orange, and his risk paid off — the space is simply splendid.

Orange is a friendly, high-octane color that gives you the energy kick you’re longing for in home decor. So I asked Rich to join me in giving some pointers on how to, and not to, use this showy color. Just like Rich did, a fun way to pull orange into your decor is through paint. The good news is, orange comes in such a huge array of tones that you can find one that enhances your home’s style, whether it’s supertraditional or contemporary. Before you get out the drop cloth and painter’s tape, test your paint on the wall, Rich cautions. “As bright at the color seems on the paint chip, it will be amplified by 100 percent when you put it on all the walls,” he says. He advises buying a quart, covering a few poster boards to hang on your walls to see how the color translates in your space. 2. FIND SOME FABULOUS FABRICS: Feeling feisty? Me, too. That’s why I have fallen for orange mixed with bold graphics and reinvented furniture silhouettes. When you’re decorating with strong colors and patterns like these, be sure to balance them out with solids and quieter tones to keep the room from taking on a circus atmosphere, Rich cautions. Orange tones used in

upholstery fabrics are spanning the spectrum from rust to coral. Rich likes the preppy Palm Beach colors: tangerine, fuchsia and kelly green. If you want a hip, progressive look in your space, Rich recommends covering a sofa or dining chairs in orange linen, then painting your walls white or cream. If you like a more traditional color palette, go for a browner shade of orange, like rust, and pair it with camel, green and gray. “It gives you that dignified, country-house feel, but with a newer twist,” Rich says. 3. ADD ARRESTING ACCENTS: In my home, I have touches of orange everywhere, but it’s almost all through artwork and accents. If you want to experiment with orange, or you just want to enjoy this strong color for a season or two, Rich suggests you add little punches through inexpensive accents, like pottery or a tray. Should I remove it? I think you have discovered a cold-hardy bromeliad called Pinguin (Bromelia pinguin). It has been used in this area as a security fence because, as you have discovered, nobody would dare try to get past this spiny barrier. The leaves are lined with spines that are hooked and will grab on to your pant leg or skin. Before you decide to remove this plant from

your landscape, know that they have a most striking inflorescence. The bloom is red to orange, with white bracts emerging from the center of the plant like a pineapple. The Pinguin is not native, and will spread if left unchecked. It is from the tropics and prefers warmer climates, but there are several places in Gainesville where they have really taken off. If the plant is serving a purpose by acting as a barrier, you might want to leave it. But, if it is in a spot where it will grab you or a guest to your landscape, you should consider removing it. In the mild weather of the Midwest, the vents should be open in the winter and closed in the summer. When the outside air is warm and moist, the vents are left open so the moisture will migrate to the cooler crawl space and condense on the cold surface of the ductwork. When the outside air is cold and dry, the crawl

vents should be open to allow the warmer, moisture-laden air from the crawl space to migrate to the outside, helping to lower the humidity of the crawl space. If you want to leave the vents closed year-round and the area is dry, leave the vents closed. In colder climates, the vents should be open and closed, depending on the outside temperature, to protect water-supply pipes in the crawl space from freezing. In warmer climates, vents should be left closed or eliminated. Most of the newly constructed homes I

see do not have foundation vents. The crawl space is sealed, insulated and an opening on the ductwork conditions the crawl. When a crawl space is properly conditioned and drained, the area is dry.
