That means it’s also the season of cringing when you realize your house is in no condition to be seen by the guests who will be arriving any minute now. On summer evenings, “my husband will invite people over after golf,” says interior designer Mallory Mathison. “He’ll call and say, ‘We’ll all be there in 30 minutes.’” That’s when she begins rushing around, quickly prepping their home for the soon-to-arrive guests. What’s the best way to use that half hour or so before the doorbell rings to get even the messiest home party-ready? Try breaking it down like this: 10 MINUTES OF CLEANING “Most people don’t mind clutter,” says Evette Rios, a lifestyles blogger and a correspondent on ABC’s “The Chew.” “But they mind grime.” So focus on wiping surfaces in your kitchen and bathrooms. Then grab an old sock or pair of pantyhose and use that to quickly dust surfaces in your living room and dining room. Save time by only cleaning the rooms guests will enter, suggests Donna Smallin, founder of unclutter.com. And don’t feel obligated to give anyone a full-scale tour of your home. Got dishes in the sink? There’s no time to wash them, so Smallin suggests keeping an empty bin available for stashing dirty dishes under your sink. The summer rains should help, but if the weather dries up, you will need to water the sod pieces every day for at least two weeks. She suggests placing a drop of lemon-scented oil or vanilla extract on light bulbs, then turning them on. The warmth will spread the scent throughout your home. Mathison suggests lighting a few candles for their scent and flickering party atmosphere. Other ways to add a fresh scent: Rios likes to tuck scented fabric softener sheets (the kind made for use in a clothes dryer) underneath couch cushions or inside throw pillows. If you have a kitchen garbage disposal, she suggests dropping slices of lemon or lime into it and running it for just a

moment. Mathison recommends gathering a few small potted plants together in a basket or filling a basket with cuttings from your garden. It makes an instant centerpiece for a dining table, whether it includes flowers or just fresh greenery. Then, scan your refrigerator and pantry for things to serve (if you haven’t already sent a family member to the store). It’s fine to be preparing and putting out food and drinks after your guests have arrived, but it’s best to do the initial “what am I going to serve?” scrambling without an audience. Mathison always keeps a few blocks of cheese and some thinly sliced prosciutto on hand, as well as a dessert that’s ready to serve. She also suggests keeping extra drinks (bottled water, soft drinks, and wine or beer) on hand, preferably chilling in a spare refrigerator in your basement or

garage. Lastly, Mathison says, take 30 seconds to brush your hair, breathe deeply, and lighten your mood after rushing around cleaning and preparing. I have a number of tiered servers that I use over and again when I entertain. You may find them topped with fresh fruits. Or they may be holding a variety of delicious cheeses. With their graceful lines and suspended platforms, they make everything look regal. And, they bring in strong vertical height, which is essential for a well-crafted food display. A pastry server is another outstanding tool for displays. It gives you the perfect stage for showing off beautiful glasses holding desserts. A hot trend among my friends right now is to prepare individual

serving desserts in drink glasses, like a martini glass holding a little lemon pie or a wine glass cradling a chocolate trifle. Consider having a cluster of lovely glasses filled with fresh fruit sorbet. Sorbet is a great choice this time of year because it’s infused with the season’s best flavors, yet isn’t too heavy. Another option is to serve wonderfully rich vanilla ice cream in drink glasses, then fill crystal candy dishes with a variety of fun toppings. Or, just pour in a few of your favorite candies as an alternative for a guest who may not like your main dessert selection. My mantra when entertaining is “presentation over preparation.” It’s an easy rule to follow

when you are serving just dessert to guests. Go to your favorite bakery and indulge in a torte, cake or assortment of cupcakes. Then display them like pieces of art using tools like a cloche covered riser. GOOD OLD-FASHIONED SUMMER DESSERT: Is your style more casual? Then this option may be perfect for you. When you create your dessert bar, you can use a fun tablecloth as the springboard for your color palette or theme. A red-and-white check tablecloth, for example, is reminiscent of picnics of old. Achieve a casual, outdoor-picnic look by mixing together serving pieces that incorporate a variety of homespun materials, like twisted wire, woven wicker and galvanized metal. When people display food for a buffet, they often place bowls and platters directly on the table, which makes for a very flat, one-dimensional look that lacks drama and intrigue. At Nell Hill’s, our food displays always incorporate a number of risers to bring in lots of movement and drama. Consider going with a rustic two-tiered riser. erhaps coach Adam Levine of “The Voice” got tired of being “the landlord.” At any rate, the Maroon 5 frontman has sold his Hollywood Hills home for $3.55 million in an off-market deal. According to the National Association of REALTORS® 2013 Profile of International Home Buying Activity, interest in U.S. properties continues to grow, signaling that America continues to be regarded by international buyers as a great place to own property. International sales have declined a bit in the past year, but are at their second highest level in recent years. Difficult economic conditions, particularly in Europe, have impacted foreign buyers abroad and here at home tightened credit standards and low housing inventories have made finding a house more difficult. However none of these factors appear to be permanent. Total international sales were $68.2 billion, with 51% of foreign buyers with permanent residences outside the U.S. and 49% who are recent immigrants or temporary visa holders. Five states made up 61 percent of reported purchases; Florida (23 percent), California (17 percent), Arizona (9 percent), Texas (9 percent) and New York (3 percent). About half of foreign buyers preferred to purchase in a suburban area, while a quarter preferred a more central city/urban area. A majority purchased a detached single-family home and 63 percent used all-cash. Based on the reported international transactions, the mean and median prices of purchases were higher when compared to purchase prices of domestic buyers. For the 12 months ending March 2013 the median international home price was $275,862 and for domestic buyers it was $179,867. The types of homes purchased by international buyers frequently tended to be different from the types of homes purchased by domestic U.S. buyers. “Some are looking for trophy properties while others are interested in modest vacation homes,” said NAR President Gary Thomas. International buyers are more likely to be substantially wealthier and looking for a property in a specialized niche. If you aren’t growing great summer crops like okra, sweet potatoes, and Seminole pumpkin, it is a good idea to put the garden to bed for a couple of months while you start your plans for the fall garden. When you are ready to plant in September, remove the mulch and the paper, work in some compost or aged manure into the soil, and you are ready to put in seeds or transplants. Some gardeners choose to solarize their garden soil in the summer. Solarizing uses the heat from the sun to kill weed seeds and deter fungal and pest problems. To solarize your garden soil, remove

all plants and weeds and moisten the soil. Cover the area with 3 mm or thicker of clear plastic. Weigh the plastic down with boards and bricks to ensure a tight cover. In the summer, temperatures under the plastic will rise to at least 120 degrees. It needs to get this hot to kill off the pests and weeds. Leave the plastic in place for at least six weeks. Then remove the plastic and compost or manure, and you are ready to plant for the fall garden.
