The problem you are describing is fungal disease of tangerines, tangelos and grapefruits called citrus scab. This disease is worse during springs that are rainy or particularly humid. People usually first notice the corky brown bumps or warty growths on the fruit, and then discover more wartlike projections on the leaves and young stems. Badly affected leaves can become distorted and stunted. This year’s crop will have the scab lesions on the rind, and won’t win any beauty contest, but the fruit still is edible, and you can enjoy the juice. The time to control this disease is early in the season of next year. You will need to apply three applications of a copper fungicide to control this disease. The first spray should be applied at about one-quarter expansion of the spring flush

ebecca and her three kids have had a very challenging year. The loss of Darcy, their husband and father, hit them all very hard. Rebecca wanted to start down the road to recovery by designing a fabulous new family room where they could all have fun and spend some quality time together. All three of the kids had a slightly different vision of the ideal family retreat. Ganden, the oldest, wanted a room full of TVs and a bar — serving only soft drinks, of course. Reid, the middle child, is a girly girl who wanted just one thing: a sofa-bed where she could have sleepovers with her friends. And then there’s the youngest, Cian, who likes to build models and tinker with projects, making a workspace high on his list of priorities. Their family room is a good size, with a walkout to the pool, so it had huge potential. Given the reasons behind this renovation, the project was extra special, so we set about creating a healing space

where this family could make some treasured new memories. I wanted to make sure the new room had something for everyone. To begin, we brightened things up by installing a new drywall ceiling with recessed lighting. We knocked out part of a wall to make room for a wet bar, complete with a small stainless-steel sink, a tiled backsplash, floating shelving and cabinetry for storing glasses, plates and packaged snacks. For those treats that need to be kept cold, we worked a built-in fridge column and freezer column combo into a wall of cabinetry that also holds the TV and other media equipment. The appliances are concealed behind custom cabinetry doors, which Rebecca likes, while providing the cool factor the kids really dig! This new family room also solves the storage dilemma that naturally comes with kids. We have tall, open shelving,

that has been in our family for a long time. This flag is currently at our daughter’s home, but we are considering selling it and were wondering if you could tell us how to go about it. Here is the history of the flag: This flag was given to my great-grandfather, Washington Mullin, born Sept. 28, 1837, in Philadelphia, and died Nov. 28, 1904, in New York City. Washington and his wife, Margaretta C. Fabri, lived on West 131st Street in New York City. Mullin worked for both the police and fire departments in New York City. This flag was given to him upon his retirement. This flag has 38 stars, so was most likely made in 1877 when Colorado became a state. The flag hung above the fire department where Mullin was a fireman. The flag

The material of the flag is linen and in excellent condition. Enclosed are pictures of the flag. The first picture shows Mullin’s name and address written on the flag. The second picture is of the miniature helmet given to Mullin, which has his initials on it, as well as “22hose.” The third picture is of Mullin, himself. It’s the perfect place to merge treasured old memories with special new ones. As an extra personal touch, we commissioned a local artist to create a painting of all the kids — and even Chico the dog — to create a piece of art that instantly became one of Rebecca’s most prized possessions. Parked in front of the TV is a large sectional that provides lots of seating, while also converting into Reid’s dream sofa-bed, perfect for those tween girl sleepovers. Surprisingly, modern sofa-beds have come a long way since those first supremely uncomfortable models! We also needed a surface for all the kids to do their school work, but specifically for Cian to work on his projects. We

chose a classic white table with a hinged leaf that can be pulled up when extra space is needed. The desk is flanked by lots of storage, including pull-out drawers containing bins that can be carried away and returned when playtime is done. Above the desk is a custom tinted framed out chalkboard surface for important notes or fun doodles. Finally, we replaced the door leading to the pool area, which was just an ordinary, run of the mill hinged French door. To make the most of the interior space and to allow for easy exits, we installed a new large sliding patio door, complete with a very cool integrated blind system. Rebecca and the kids couldn’t believe their eyes. In place of their cluttered old family room, they now had a modern, functional space customized to their needs. With

something for everyone, this is a room that is guaranteed to see more than its share of laughs and fun times with friends and family. As Rebecca envisioned it, their new family room is “like a ray of sunshine,” heralding the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Tip: When designing common areas like a family room or backyard patio, hold a family meeting to discuss the project before it even begins. Each member of the household will have a different vision for the renovation, and often these can be combined to create a truly functional space that will make everyone feel right at home! he DIY dad will get excited on Father’s Day with one or two of these tools for his toolbox or workshop: BLACK & DECKER’S NEW DRILL/ DRIVER WITH AUTOSENSE TECHNOLOGY: The 20-volt lithium ion battery Drill/ Driver has an automatic clutch that allows the user to accurately drive screws flush with the surface of a project, then the AutoSense stops the Drill/ Driver from penetrating into the work surface. You just set the drill to drive mode, and it will monitor the amount of torque needed to drive the screw. Then, by simply holding the trigger, the AutoSense will continue to drive the screw in small, about one-quarter turns, until the screw reaches the user’s desired depth. No longer do you have to slow the Drill/Driver or adjust a clutch for the many changing applications a Drill/Driver is expected to perform. hen I was dreaming of how to decorate my little lake house, I had a garden of options to choose from. Any of the styles, color schemes and pattern mixes we spotlight at the store would have been fabulous. After long, delicious deliberation, I decided to go with the love of my life: an evolved, traditional style brought to life with the help of black and white ticking and buffalo plaid. Here’s a glimpse of how I used these two modest patterns in modern ways to make my new home a haven. I knew a simple black and white ticking was the perfect pick, so I washed the entire living room in it. In the winter, I dressed up the furniture with tartan plaid pillows. For summer, I swapped them out for a hodge-podge of more modern pillows. I first fell in love with formal furnishings

Traditional style can be brought to life with the help of black and white ticking and buffalo plaid. upholstered in ticking back when I was in my 20s. I began to experiment with the power of ticking in my own home. I did the porch cushions in a subtle stripe because it acted almost like white furniture, embracing every color and pattern you put with it, yet still added a hint of pattern. Every time we cover a piece of furniture in ticking at my store, it flies off the showroom floor. So I began to feature other simpler fabrics on formal pieces. That’s when my

love light started to burn brighter for black and white buffalo plaid. Defined as a four-inch check, buffalo plaid is a big, statement fabric that magically plays well. Like ticking, furniture upholstered in buffalo check can be dressed up in lots of different ways, depending upon what kind of pillow and throws you pair it with, the other furnishings in the room and the wall color. Ticking and buffalo plaid also are ideal additions to bedding. I picked buffalo check for the draperies in a bedroom at my lake house because it is such a chameleon; it looks lovely paired with winter or summer accents. This restful window seat next to the bed blends the timeless beauty of the buffalo check drapes and a ticking cushion, made lighter with two summer pillows. Since I am the optimist I tend to look at the positive. One of the best things to come out of the signed budget this year is the reduction in tag, license and vehicle registration fees to somewhere around 2009 levels and we can all appreciate that not just those paying a commercial lease payment.
