The evolution of termite treatments everal years ago, I was summoned to examine a horse barn that had a number of wings — perhaps thousands — along the center aisle. It wasn’t hard to conclude this was a large swarm of the eastern subterranean termite. In Florida, we deal with several types of termites, but those of primary concern are the subterranean termite and the drywood termite. While it is possible to have drywood termites in this central portion of the state, they are more likely to occur in coastal areas. Drywood termites live in wood in the interior of structures, and are controlled by tenting the structure with canvas and applying a fumigant to eliminate the colony. I have observed, over several years in Marion County, that only about five percent of termite questions involve drywoods, while about 95 percent of the termites we deal with are of the subterranean variety. For this interior part of Florida, the subterranean is the termite of greatest concern, and control methods have evolved considerably over the past 25 years. Subterranean termites live in underground colonies and forage for cellulose, a material found in wood products. Their foraging is random and once they locate a food source, they leave a scent trail so other members of the colony can find their way to the meal. Homeowners are faced with several decisions in determining which method of control will be best for their needs. Cost, expertise of the service provider (particularly the technician making the treatment application), and terms of the contract are all considerations that

ransparency may be in short supply in Washington, D.C., but in the furniture and fashion worlds it has been a clear winner for more than 75 years. Plastics such as Plexiglas, resin, Lucite and acrylic have seen through decades of trends and look as new today as ever. “Since its debut in the late 1930s, acrylic furniture has captivated the public imagination,” says Rachel Delphia, associate curator of decorative arts and design at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Cosmetics mogul Helena Rubinstein was one of the first to commission furniture made of the clear hard substance. The Carnegie Museum has one of the first transparent chairs made by Rohm & Haas for Rubinstein. “The chair was designed by Rubinstein company designer Ladislas Medgyesis and is fascinatingly modern and

traditional,” she adds. That marked the beginning of Hollywood Regency, a style that embraced the glamour of modern materials. But it wasn’t until the ’60s that Lucite and acrylic became strong components of contemporary home decor. The most recent incarnation of plastic with a sense of place came in 1992 when Italian furniture manufacturer Kartell introduced the Louis Ghost Chair by designer Philippe Starck. It was an instant hit, spawning many imitators, including Zuo Modern (at a lower price point). The idea of taking an antique silhouette and doing a molded plastic chair was the perfect marriage of classic and contemporary. Going for Baroque, Kartell came out with the Bourgie transparent lamp, another instant winner. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Ghost chair, Kartell made a limited edition with Starck’s signature. Over the next 10 years, the company also introduced color and images to its acrylic

Along with infusing color for contrast, today’s manufacturers also are encasing Mother Nature’s most accommodating material — wood — in resin or acrylic, a message in a bottle, if you will. Are we encapsulating the planet in plastic or preserving nature’s beauty for eons?

are so cold that I have to place blankets over them to keep the room warm. The windows are in a 1950s home and there are storm windows, but there is such a draft around the windows that I have to keep the rooms closed off. What I can do myself? A drafty window repair will require a little knowledge and labor. The older windows are set in an opening that is somewhat larger than the window itself. This is called the rough opening

and is generally 1 to 2 inches wider and taller than the actual window. This allows the installer to set the window in the rough opening and then align and square the window before securing it in place. The trim around the window hides all these voids next to the window’s frame. Generally, I find that these voids were not insulated after the windows were installed

and the draft is actually cold air entering the home around the window frames. Here’s what you can do: Remove the trim from all four sides of the window and, in some cases, the window sill. To save the trim, use a nail set, also known as a punch, to drive the trim’s nails all the way through the trim so that the trim can be removed. If you can’t locate the nails, use a pry bar to gently remove all the trim and, if necessary, the window sill. If you find insulation stuffed into the gap around the window frame, remove it,

because any time insulation is ” stuffed” in an opening, it no longer provides much of a thermal resistance to the weather. Next, fill the gaps on all sides of the frame with low-expanding spray foam. I use a canned product called Great Stuff, which is available at most home and hardware stores. Make sure to use low-expanding foam in the Great Stuff blue can. The expanding foam in the Great Stuff red container could damage the window as it expands. Once the foam has dried, use a knife to

remove any foam that extends beyond the face of the frame. Replace the window’s sill and trim and you will find you have a warmer room and should notice a decrease in your energy use next winter. One factor is the method of protection, which comes down to the choice between a barrier treatment or a baiting system. The first of these methods is often referred to as “trench and treat” or a barrier system. A shallow trench is dug a few inches away from the foundation, the chemical is applied to the soil, and the trench is covered. This places a chemical barrier between the structure and the termites, forcing the insect to pass through the barrier in order to feed. At one time, repellent materials, chemicals that were unpalatable to termites, were the only

option. The disagreeable nature of these repellents drove termites away from the structure and encouraged them to conduct their foraging activities elsewhere. Termites are unable to detect these poisons, and when they pass through the material, the poisons adhere to their body, eventually resulting in death. break down in sunlight and temperature, hence replacement is recommended on a five-year interval. Another option for termite control is the use of baits. In this instance, bait stations are located on set intervals, usually 10 feet, around the structure. This technology takes advantage of the foraging characteristic of the termite and offers a bait product that prevents the termite from molting. Over time, the termite outgrows the hardened body shell and trapped inside, dies. Because these act slowly, termites continue to feed on the bait for several days, and leave a scent trail for others to follow to the bait station, eventually resulting

in elimination of the colony. Initial bait stations offered wood and replaced it with bait when there was evidence of termite feeding. This required quarterly inspection of the stations, a very expensive proposition. In more recent times, baits have been developed that are good for one year, and baits are initially placed in the stations, rather than replacing wood stakes with bait once feeding is evidenced. Extension offices often receive questions about do-it-yourself termite control, but this is not recommended. Products available to homeowners simply are not able to kill the large quantity of termites that make up most colonies. The University of Florida has a

publication, “ENY-219/MG237: How to Buy Pest Control Services,” that provides pointers to residents on selecting a pest control firm. This may be obtained at edis.ifas.ufl.edu, or you may obtain a copy by calling your local Extension Office. Termite protection is a costly, but necessary, expense in protecting your home. ere’s how I wake up every morning: I pour myself a big cup of coffee, then settle into my favorite chair with my feet propped up on an ottoman. As the caffeine works its magic, I go over the day’s activities until I’m fully awake and ready to get at it. I think of that ottoman as my daily launching pad, proof that these relatively small pieces of furniture can play a big role in home decor — and life. Here are four of my favorite places to use ottomans: 1. AS A COFFEE TABLE: My all-time favorite way to use an ottoman is as a coffee table, operating as a very stylish hub of a living

These big beauties really become a focal point in a room and look great topped with a display grounded on a tray — or with nothing on them at all. Coffee-table ottomans are an ideal place to experiment with bolder fabrics, like large-scaled patterns and strong colors — statement textiles you might not want on a piece as large as a sofa or chair. If you get tired of the fabric,

no problem. It only takes a few yards to reupholster an ottoman. Or, try this: Have two slipcovers made for your ottoman that you switch out seasonally, one that is bright and light and summery; the other richer and heavier for winter. I often use benches and ottomans interchangeably because they really serve the same purpose. How about a bench as a coffee table? Benches also are great in front of fireplaces, in entryways, pulled up to vanities or tucked under tables. They add another layer and give you instant seating when you’re in a pinch. Like ottomans, they are easy to reupholster, so you can have some fun with them. 2. UNDER A PIANO: If you are

lucky enough to have a grand piano, try this: Tuck a round, skirted, tufted ottoman into the curve of the piano. It melds with the sensuous lines of the piano and balances the piano’s hard, gleaming surface. 3. UNDER A TABLE: The other day I worked with a customer to design a custom ottoman that will tuck up under a table in her foyer. It gave her a chance to add some color and pattern to the room, plus a little spot for guests to sit on to remove wet shoes. It’s a great place to toss a purse or the day’s mail, too. I really like to place a few cube ottomans under sofa tables to fill in the empty space between their long,

thin legs. When you entertain, pull out the cubes and use them as extra seating. 4. AT THE END OF THE BED: Placing an ottoman at the end of a bed is a lovely way to provide a nice, graduated finish to the foot of your bed design. If your bed is covered in pillows, you can pile the pillows on the ottoman at night. In the morning, use this little seat when you slip on your shoes.
